1. Life history traits play a central role in adaptation to specific environmental conditions. Egg development time, hatchling, and egg batch size in 10 populations of the soil‐dwelling collembolan species Folsomia quadrioculata (Tullberg, 1871) from diverse habitats across arctic and temperate regions, ranging in latitude from 43 to 81°N were studied. 2. For all traits, 15 °C was used as the reference temperature. Phenotypic plasticity was studied by changing temperature to 10 and 20 °C in hatchling size, and to 20 °C in egg development time. The effect of latitude, climatic zone, and summer temperature at their sites of sampling was tested to address the hypotheses that populations from cooler areas would have (i) a faster temperature‐dependent egg development, (ii) a larger hatchling size, (iii) smaller egg batches and (iv) higher phenotypic plasticity 3. The first and fourth hypothesis were not supported, whereas the second and third were partly supported when including the whole latitudinal gradient, but not within regions. Plasticity showed a complex pattern, including large differences between populations from similar macroclimates and considerable similarity between some populations from contrasting climates. Small effects of latitude and macroclimatic variables emphasised that local climate and microhabitat should be taken into account when evaluating thermal conditions as possible drivers of population‐specific differences in soil‐dwelling ectotherms. 4. There was a trade‐off between egg batch and hatchling sizes. A weak correlation between the population mean egg development time and the mean hatchling size suggested that the populations are, or have been, exposed to differential selection.  相似文献

The role of macromolecule synthesis during the early hours ofundifferentiated growth of carrot cell suspension in a mediumcontaining the synthetic auxin, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acidand during embryogenic growth in an auxin-free medium was investigated.For each set of cultures, total protein and RNA, rate of proteinsynthesis, changes in ATP pool, and rate of RNA synthesis weredetermined. Although no changes in protein and RNA contentsof cells were noted during the first 48 h of their growth infresh media, the rate of protein synthesis in the embryogeniccells markedly increased over that of the non-embryogenic cellsas early as 2 h. ATP pool size in both types of cells stabilizedwithin 1 h and it registered only a slight decrease over a 24h period. Rate of RNA synthesis increased in the embryogeniccells from 4 to 12 h following their transfer to fresh medium,after which it decreased. Transfer of carrot cells of zero embryogenicpotential to an auxin-free medium did not however elicit themacromolecule synthetic pattern characteristic of the highlyembryogenic cells.  相似文献

Abstract: The sauropod dinosaur, Barapasaurus tagorei, is known from the Early Jurassic Kota Formation (Sinemurian to Pliensbachian) of India. The taxon is represented by c. 300 bones that were found associated with large fossilized tree trunks and were collected from the interface of sandstone and mudstone units covering an area of c. 276 m2. The collection includes one partial skeleton; most of the remainder of the bones were disarticulated, disassociated and dispersed, but taphonomic analysis permits recognition of associated elements comprising several individuals. Skeletal anatomy of Barapasaurus includes several teeth, vertebrae from the caudal cervicals rearward to the terminal caudals, and most elements of the appendicular skeleton. Barapasaurus is characterized by spoon‐shaped teeth with bulbous bases and grooves on the anterolabial and posterolingual sides of the crown, coarse tubercles on the carina, acamerate cranial and dorsal vertebrae, lateral laminae of the middle and caudal dorsal neural spines composed of spinodiapophyseal and spinopostzygapophyseal laminae, neural canal of the mid‐dorsal vertebrae opens dorsally through a narrow slit into a large cavity and sacrum with four co‐ossified vertebrae. Phylogenetic analysis reveals that Barapasaurus is basal in comparison with Vulcanodon and is removed from Eusauropoda.  相似文献

Abstract: Chigutisauridae is the longest‐lived trematosaurian clade (from early Triassic to early Cretaceous). They were reported in Argentina, Australia, India and South Africa. This contribution reports a putative chigutisaurid specimen in the Carnian of southern Brazil (Santa Maria Formation, Paraná Basin). The material comprises two skull fragments, a mandibular fragment, a clavicular blade and a humerus. Ontogenetic features point to an early development stage of the specimen. The presence of a long, straight and pointed tabular horn, which runs parallel to the skull midline towards its tip, and a distinctive projection in the posterior border of the postparietal indicates a close relationship of the Brazilian chigutisaurid with the Indian Compsocerops cosgriffi. Three distinctive and combined characters suggest that the Brazilian chigutisaurid is a distinctive specimen: the presence of an alar process of the jugal in the ventral margin of the orbit; jugal does not extend well beyond the anterior margin of the orbit; and tabular does not contact the parietal. These characters could justify the erection of a new taxon; however, they might reflect its immature ontogenetic stage as well. Accordingly, we attribute this new specimen to Compsocerops sp. Argentinean and Indian occurrences are dated as Norian, so the presence of a Carnian chigutisaurid in southern Brazil indicates that western Gondwana chigutisaurids have first occupied the Paraná Basin and later migrated towards west (to Argentina) and east (India). However, the presence of ghost chigutisaurid taxa cannot be dismissed, because their long temporal range contrasts with their still short (in comparison with other temnospondyl groups) geographic distribution. Hence, they might have been more geographically widespread than their fossil record suggests.  相似文献

Six monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) were produced against a highly immunogenic fraction derived by the chromatographic separation of the soluble preparation of axenic Entamoeba histolytica (strain NIH:200) trophozoites. Isotype characterization of the six MAbs revealed that four belonged to the IgM class and one each to the IgG1 and the IgG2a subclasses. The immunoreactivity patterns and the specificity of the MAbs with homologous and heterologous antigens were analyzed by the enzyme-linked immunotransfer blot technique and by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The MAbs reacted intensely with isolates of E. histolytica (strain NIH:200 as well as a local isolate MX1) but showed no reactivity with Entamoeba coli, Iodamoeba butschlii, Endolimax nana, Entamoeba hartmanni, free-living amoeba (Acanthamoeba harticolus) and other enteric parasites. Using the IgG1 MAb as a detecting antibody, a polyclonal-monoclonal antibody-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was developed for the detection of E. histolytica antigens in stool samples of infected patients. The detection limit of the assay was 8 ng of amoebic antigen. This test was found to be specific and sensitive and yielded 100% positive results in cases with amoebiasis but did not react with controls included in the evaluation. The MAb-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay developed in this study will be an important test for the diagnosis of E. histolytica in the feces of infected humans; however, the limitation of the test is the inability to discriminate the pathogenic status of the amoeba detected in the stool.  相似文献

Of the 560 leaf samples belonging to 259 species of green plantsexamined more than 50 per cent of the Angiosperms and 25 percent of the Pteridophytes and Gymnosperms revealed the presenceof N2-fixing micro-organisms in their phyllosphere. Plants particularlyremarkable in this respect are orchids and several other epiphytes,Scindapsus officinalis, Ficus and cucurbits. Most of the isolatesappear to be biotypes of Klebsiella pneumoniae. The more activestrains fixed more than 5 mg N g–1 glucose utilized andreduced more than 100 nmol C2H2 mg–1 cell d. w h–1. The efficacy of the phyllosphere N2-fixing isolates for N-nutritionof host plants was studied by spraying suspensions of the culturesgrown on N-free media on rice and wheat seedlings. In IR-26rice or Sonalika and Janak wheat grown on soil in wooden flatsor earthenware pots, 22 per cent of the 161 cultures studiedcaused increased height and about three-quarters of the culturesenhanced dry weight by more than 50 per cent; chlorophyll andN-contents were enhanced more than 50 per cent by about halfand two-thirds of the cultures respectively. In N-free sandculture 26 of the 50 promising strains doubled N-content, and30 doubled dry weight of the tested plants. In some cases dryweight, number of grains per panicle, and 1000 grain weightwere increased by 300, 70–83 and 126–158 per centrespectively; N-content of straw and seed was increased three-or fourfold. In several cases the beneficial effects were foundto match closely the performance of plants receiving ammoniumsulphate.
