Riparian zones are among the most valuable ecosystems on the earth. They act as the ecological engineers that improve river health through delivering a range of ecosystem functions. Stream bank stabilization, pollutant and sediment buffering, temperature regulation, provision of energy to river food webs and communities, groundwater recharge and provision of ecological corridors and habitat for wildlife, are among major ecosystem functions of riparian zones that play a great role in river health. Besides these ecosystem functions, riparian zones also provide various ecosystem goods and services for human well-being. But in the current scenario, riparian zones are under severe threat due to agricultural activities, urbanization, river flow alteration, overexploitation, climate change, pollution, and biological invasion. In the present and probable future scenarios of declining river health and global environmental changes, there is a pressing need of an integrated approach for managing riparian zones. This review article aims to advocate an integrated approach for riparian zone management based on various components such as riparian condition assessment, policy framework, stakeholder’s participation, management practices, legislation, and awareness. Authors also discussed riparian zones in context of their concepts, features, functions, and threats.

Secretin, a 27-amino acid neuropeptide, is a member of the glucagon/secretin/vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) superfamily of amphipathic peptides that elicits transient vasodilation in vivo. The purpose of this study was to determine whether association of human secretin with sterically stabilized phospholipid micelles (SSM) amplifies the vasorelaxant effects of the peptide in the peripheral microcirculation in vivo. We found that secretin in saline evoked significant concentration-dependent vasodilation in the intact hamster cheek pouch microcirculation (P < 0.05). This response was potentiated and prolonged significantly when secretin was associated with SSM (P < 0.05). Vasodilation evoked by secretin in saline and secretin in SSM was abrogated by VIP(10-28), a VIP receptor antagonist, but not by PACAP(6-38), a PACAP receptor antagonist, or Hoe140, a selective bradykinin B(2) receptor antagonist. Collectively, these data indicate that self-association of human secretin with SSM significantly amplifies peptide vasoreactivity in the intact peripheral microcirculation through activation of VIP receptors. We suggest that the vasoactive effects of human secretin in vivo are, in part, phospholipid-dependent. 相似文献
7,8-dihydro-8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG) adducts are formed frequently by the attack of oxygen-free radicals on DNA. They are among the most mutagenic lesions in cells because of their dual coding potential, where, in addition to normal base-pairing of 8-oxoG(anti) with dCTP, 8-oxoG in the syn conformation can base pair with dATP, causing G to T transversions. We provide here for the first time a structural basis for the error-free replication of 8-oxoG lesions by yeast DNA polymerase η (Polη). We show that the open active site cleft of Polη can accommodate an 8-oxoG lesion in the anti conformation with only minimal changes to the polymerase and the bound DNA: at both the insertion and post-insertion steps of lesion bypass. Importantly, the active site geometry remains the same as in the undamaged complex and provides a basis for the ability of Polη to prevent the mutagenic replication of 8-oxoG lesions in cells. 相似文献
A 6-chloronicotinic acid mineralizing bacterium was isolated from enrichment cultures originating from imidacloprid-contaminated soil samples. This Bradyrhizobiaceae, designated strain SG-6C, hydrolytically dechlorinated 6-chloronicotinic acid to 6-hydroxynicotinic acid, which was then further metabolised via the nicotinic acid pathway. This metabolic pathway was confirmed by growth and resting cell assays using HPLC and LC-MS studies. A candidate for the gene encoding the initial dechlorination step, named cch2 (for 6-chloronicotinic acid chlorohydrolase), was identified using genome sequencing and its function was confirmed using resting cell assays on E. coli heterologously expressing this gene. The 464 amino acid enzyme was found to be a member of the metal dependent hydrolase superfamily with similarities to the TRZ/ATZ family of chlorohydrolases. We also provide evidence that cch2 was mobilized into this bacterium by an Integrative and Conjugative Element (ICE) that feeds 6-hydroxynicotinic acid into the existing nicotinic acid mineralization pathway. 相似文献
Enzymes are central to the biology of many pesticides, influencing their modes of action, environmental fates and mechanisms
of target species resistance. Since the introduction of synthetic xenobiotic pesticides, enzymes responsible for pesticide
turnover have evolved rapidly, in both the target organisms and incidentally exposed biota. Such enzymes are a source of significant
biotechnological potential and form the basis of several bioremediation strategies intended to reduce the environmental impacts
of pesticide residues. This review describes examples of enzymes possessing the major activities employed in the bioremediation
of pesticide residues, and some of the strategies by which they are employed. In addition, several examples of specific achievements
in enzyme engineering are considered, highlighting the growing trend in tailoring enzymatic activity to a specific biotechnologically
relevant function. 相似文献
