Pieris napi females have different heritable reproductive tactics. Polyandrous females have higher lifetime fecundity, whereas monandrous ones start to reproduce at a faster rate. Butterfly larvae are time‐constrained in seasonal environments. Thus, polyandry is expected to be associated with fast juvenile development, which may result in biased mortality due to physiological costs. We compared how females with varying degrees of polyandry allocate between duration of larval period and achievable size in directly developing and over‐wintering generations. Offspring survival and growth were monitored under a high density and low quality diet. Polyandrous females developed at a faster rate than monandrous ones, regardless of developmental pathway. The growth rate of female offspring correlated with their mothers’ degree of polyandry, which underpins polyandry and monandry as distinct strategies with life history differences reaching beyond mating frequency. The high growth rate of polyandrous females resulted in a short larval period among directly developing females, and in large size within an over‐wintering cohort. A change in either the duration of the larval period or pupal mass had no significant effect on the other, emphasising that growth rate is not necessarily a simple outcome of the tradeoff between development time and size at maturity. The correlation between the degree of polyandry and juvenile growth rate diminished when larvae were exposed to environmental stress, which offers an explanation why juvenile mortality was decoupled from mating tactic. We conclude that polyandry is a strategy that allows larvae to utilise optimal conditions in a more effective way than monandry. As a consequence, polyandrous females either achieve larger size or they mature faster. This gives them a double advantage over monandrous ones within an over‐wintering generation or diminishes the effects of asynchronous hatching of offspring within a directly developing generation. Human peritoneal macrophages from healthy females have been investigated for their capability to produce interleukin-1 (IL-1), their expression of HLA-DR and -DQ, and for their antigen-presenting capacity in concanavalin A, tetanus toxoid (TT), and autologous T-cell proliferative responses. Fifteen out of thirty macrophage populations produced IL-1 but the activity was 1/5 to 1/10 that of peripheral blood mononuclear cells stimulated under similar conditions. High levels of HLA-DR were expressed on all macrophages while lower and more variable levels of DQ were found. All macrophages induced mitogen-dependent T-cell proliferation while the ability to induce a proliferative response to TT was variable, 12/23 tests were positive. In five samples stimulatory capacity of macrophages in the absence of TT was as strong as in the presence of the stimulus, suggesting that in vivo processed immunogen could be responsible for the proliferative response. The surface density of HLA-D-region-determined antigens was not indicative of the macrophages' ability to induce antigen-specific proliferation. IL-1 production, however, correlated with this function. Antigen presentation was not confined exclusively to peritoneal populations consisting of recently immigrant monocyte-like cells, nor were all young macrophages able to present antigen. Chronic (10-day) diabetes was associated with increased metabolic flux through phenylalanine hydroxylase in isolated liver cells. This flux was stimulated by 0.1 microM-glucagon, but not by 10 microM-noradrenaline; 0.1 microM-insulin affected neither basal nor glucagon-stimulated flux. The increased rate of phenylalanine hydroxylation in diabetes was accompanied by parallel increases in enzyme activity (as measured with artificial cofactor) and immunoreactive-enzyme-protein content. In contrast with total protein synthesis, which decreased, phenylalanine hydroxylase synthesis persisted at the control rate in cells from diabetic animals. These findings are discussed in relation to the hormonal regulation of the hydroxylase and the known metabolic consequences of chronic diabetes. 相似文献

Many organisms express discrete alternative phenotypes (polyphenisms) in relation to predictable environmental variation. However, the evolution of alternative life‐history phenotypes remains poorly understood. Here, we analyze the evolution of alternative life histories in seasonal environments by using temperate insects as a model system. Temperate insects express alternative developmental pathways of diapause and direct development, the induction of a certain pathway affecting fitness through its life‐history correlates. We develop a methodologically novel and holistic simulation model and optimize development time, growth rate, body size, reproductive effort, and adult life span simultaneously in both developmental pathways. The model predicts that direct development should be associated with shorter development time (duration of growth) and adult life span, higher growth rate and reproductive effort, smaller body size as well as lower fecundity compared to the diapause pathway, because the two generations divide the available time unequally. These predictions are consistent with many empirical data. Our analysis shows that seasonality alone can explain the evolution of alternative life histories. 相似文献

Deterministic seasonality can explain the evolution of alternative life history phenotypes (i.e., life history polyphenism) expressed in different generations emerging within the same year. However, the influence of stochastic variation on the expression of such life history polyphenisms in seasonal environments is insufficiently understood. Here, we use insects as a model and explore (1) the effects of stochastic variation in seasonality and (2) the life cycle on the degree of life history differentiation among the alternative developmental pathways of direct development and diapause (overwintering), and (3) the evolution of phenology. With numerical simulation, we determine the values of development (growth) time, growth rate, body size, reproductive effort, adult life span, and fecundity in both the overwintering and directly developing generations that maximize geometric mean fitness. The results suggest that natural selection favors the expression of alternative life histories in the alternative developmental pathways even when there is stochastic variation in seasonality, but that trait differentiation is affected by the developmental stage that overwinters. Increasing environmental unpredictability induced a switch to a bet‐hedging type of life history strategy, which is consistent with general life history theory. Bet‐hedging appeared in our study system as reduced expression of the direct development phenotype, with associated changes in life history phenotypes, because the fitness value of direct development is highly variable in uncertain environments. Our main result is that seasonality itself is a key factor promoting the evolution of seasonally polyphenic life histories but that environmental stochasticity may modulate the expression of life history phenotypes. 相似文献

Diets play a key role in understanding trophic interactions. Knowing the actual structure of food webs contributes greatly to our understanding of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. The research of prey preferences of different predators requires knowledge not only of the prey consumed, but also of what is available. In this study, we applied DNA metabarcoding to analyze the diet of 4 bird species (willow tits Poecile montanus, Siberian tits Poecile cinctus, great tits Parus major and blue tits Cyanistes caeruleus) by using the feces of nestlings. The availability of their assumed prey (Lepidoptera) was determined from feces of larvae (frass) collected from the main foraging habitat, birch (Betula spp.) canopy. We identified 53 prey species from the nestling feces, of which 11 (21%) were also detected from the frass samples (eight lepidopterans). Approximately 80% of identified prey species in the nestling feces represented lepidopterans, which is in line with the earlier studies on the parids' diet. A subsequent laboratory experiment showed a threshold for fecal sample size and the barcoding success, suggesting that the smallest frass samples do not contain enough larval DNA to be detected by high‐throughput sequencing. To summarize, we apply metabarcoding for the first time in a combined approach to identify available prey (through frass) and consumed prey (via nestling feces), expanding the scope and precision for future dietary studies on insectivorous birds. 相似文献
