An investigation on the colonization of artificial substrate baskets by benthos was carried out in the Naro Moru River, a second-order high altitude river in Kenya, from November, 1986 to October, 1987. Simuliidae dominated the colonizing benthos. The mean (±95% CL) maximum colonization time was achieved after 9.63±1.57 days. The highest mean diversity (H) occurred after 6 days of exposure whilst the highest mean Hmaximum, evenness (J) and species richness (s) were achieved after 10, 8 and 10 days respectively. The benthos arrival rate (AR) declined exponentially with time. The changes in benthos departure rate (DR) with time was insignificant. Equilibrial state (AR:DR=1.0) was not achieved in the present study. 相似文献

The decomposition of plant litter is one of the most important ecosystem processes in the biosphere and is particularly sensitive to climate warming. Aquatic ecosystems are well suited to studying warming effects on decomposition because the otherwise confounding influence of moisture is constant. By using a latitudinal temperature gradient in an unprecedented global experiment in streams, we found that climate warming will likely hasten microbial litter decomposition and produce an equivalent decline in detritivore-mediated decomposition rates. As a result, overall decomposition rates should remain unchanged. Nevertheless, the process would be profoundly altered, because the shift in importance from detritivores to microbes in warm climates would likely increase CO(2) production and decrease the generation and sequestration of recalcitrant organic particles. In view of recent estimates showing that inland waters are a significant component of the global carbon cycle, this implies consequences for global biogeochemistry and a possible positive climate feedback. 相似文献

Composition and seasonality of benthic invertebrates, and drift in the Naro Moru River,Kenya 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
A survey was carried out to establish the nature and composition of the benthos along the Naro Moru, a tropical river in central
Kenya using artificial substrate baskets, from November 1986 to October 1987. A clear longitudinal zonation existed for Diptera
and Ephemeroptera which were the major benthic taxa. Maximum colonization took place after ten days of exposure.
Seasonal variations in abundance were also observed. All taxa collected from the bottom samples were also collected in the
drift samples, but the percentage composition of the benthos showed variations with that of the drift. Simulium sp. dominated the benthos whilst Baetis spp. dominated the drift. There was a positive correlation between drift rate and benthic fauna density. 相似文献

We present the findings of a participatory experiment on integrated aquaculture-agriculture systems (Fingerponds) at the Lake
Victoria wetlands, Kenya. Fingerponds are flood-based lacustrine or floodplain wetland fishponds. The aim of the study was
to explore, within a wetland/floodplain interface environment, the potential of semi-intensive fish production to enhance
the wetland fishery and protect the natural ecosystem from wide-scale, destructive encroachment. The ponds were stocked naturally
by flood water. After flood recession, livestock manure was added to the ponds and the effects of manuring on water and sediment
quality and fish yields were studied. Manuring had positive effects on the nitrogen, phosphorous and chlorophyll a concentrations
of the pond water. Regression analysis results indicated that site, manuring and environmental and climatic variables explained
58–70% of the variation in dissolved nitrogen and phosphorous, and 71% of the variation in chorophyll a. Manuring enhanced the total phosphorus concentration in the sediment but it only had marginal effects on total nitrogen.
Although the net fish yields were highly variable between sites and seasons, ranging from 402 to 1069 kg ha−1, the data showed that manuring was advantageous. The duration of the culture period, site variability and manuring explained
82% of the variation in fish yields. We conclude that Fingerponds fertilized with livestock manure from abutting riparian
subsistence agriculture can improve fish production, enhance food diversity and security and contribute to more efficient
use of papyrus wetlands for food production. This in turn may reduce large-scale conversion of wetlands to agriculture. 相似文献

Understanding what mechanisms shape the diversity and composition of biological assemblages across broad‐scale gradients is central to ecology. Litter‐consuming detritivorous invertebrates in streams show an unusual diversity gradient, with α‐diversity increasing towards high latitudes but no trend in γ‐diversity. We hypothesized this pattern to be related to shifts in nestedness and several ecological processes shaping their assemblages (dispersal, environmental filtering and competition). We tested this hypothesis, using a global dataset, by examining latitudinal trends in nestedness and several indicators of the above processes along the latitudinal gradient. Our results suggest that strong environmental filtering and low dispersal in the tropics lead to often species‐poor local detritivore assemblages, nested in richer regional assemblages. At higher latitudes, dispersal becomes stronger, disrupting the nested assemblage structure and resulting in local assemblages that are generally more species‐rich and non‐nested subsets of the regional species pools. Our results provide evidence that mechanisms underlying assemblage composition and diversity of stream litter‐consuming detritivores shift across latitudes, and provide an explanation for their unusual pattern of increasing α‐diversity with latitude. When we repeated these analyses for whole invertebrate assemblages of leaf litter and for abundant taxa showing reverse or no diversity gradients we found no latitudinal patterns, suggesting that function‐based rather than taxon‐based analyses of assemblages may help elucidate the mechanisms behind diversity gradients. 相似文献

Management and sustainability of fisheries has been guided by theories and models derived from modern ecological science. Traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) has been ignored in all spheres of decision-making for management and sustainability of fisheries in East Africa. TEK guided African communities in the way they associated and interacted with the natural environment around them. Spiritual rituals, religious practices, social taboos and sacred animal totems guided the peoples on how and when to utilize the available natural resources. In the advent of modern scientific knowledge, the African traditional knowledge quickly faded away and is generally seen as irrelevant. Today the potential of TEK in the management and sustainability of fisheries in East Africa has not been realized and its status and future is unknown. TEK should be complementary to modern scientific knowledge in the management and sustainability of fisheries. This paper therefore focuses on the potential application of TEK in the management and sustainability of fisheries in East Africa and the issues that impede its application. 相似文献

Disturbance of a Kenya Rift Valley stream by the daily activities of local people and their livestock 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Human and domestic animal activities and visits to an impacted site in the Njoro River, Kenya, were recorded from 1994 to 1995. The activities of people in the humid and wet zones of the stream included linen washing, water abstraction, excretion, bathing and swimming. Human and animal visits and activities along the Njoro River were on a daily basis and were patterned according to the time of the day, weather and seasons. Women formed the first group to visit the stream at dawn, followed by men and lastly, children. The diurnal pattern of visits was bimodal, with major peaks between 0600 and 1100 h and from 1600 h until dusk. The intensity of all major activities peaked at around midday and donkeys and cattle formed the largest proportion of the domestic animals that visited the stream. Much of the small-scale water abstraction occurred between 0700 and 1100 h, coinciding with the time when most people visited the stream. Water abstraction was most intense during the dry season. A mean discharge of 1.7 litres per second was measured whilst 0.3 litre of water per second was abstracted at the impacted site, implying that about 20% of the flow volume of the Njoro River was abstracted at a single site in one day.The effects of the human and animal activities on the structure of macrozoobenthos in the wet zone of the Njoro River were studied on the impacted site in relation to an upstream reference site and a downstream reference site. Oligochaetes and chironomids dominated the fauna in all three sites. The impacted site had low patchiness and mean crowding, with the taxa distribution tending toward a randomly dispersed spatial pattern. The mean turnover (±SD) of the macroinvertebrates was 47±18, 48±26 and 36±22 in the impacted, downstream and upstream sites, respectively. The trampling of the streambed by humans and livestock could, therefore, alter the benthos structure through redistribution and reduction of faunal patchiness. The cumulative effect of small-scale, but widespread and frequent disturbances might have large impacts on whole river systems. This study demonstrated that, in the tropics, quantification of the daily activities of people and domestic animals is important for future management of the Njoro River and consequently, Lake Nakuru. 相似文献
