Toe pad morphology and mechanisms of sticking in frogs   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Sticking ability in frogs was measured on a series of different substrates. Analysis of performance suggests that frogs use two sticking mechanisms: interlocking on rough surfaces and capillarity on smooth surfaces. There is a correlation between morphological specializations of the toe pad and sticking ability, but these morphological features are not unique to arboreal species. Terrestrial species that use leaves as resting sites during times of inactivity have many of the same morphological specializations and stick as well as the strictly arboreal species.  相似文献

The abundance and diversity of insects was the subject of the joint commemorative meeting between the Linnean Society and the Royal Entomological Society of London. This paper gives a brief outline of the foundation and early history of the Entomological Society and its forerunners, and its relations with the Linnean Society at the time. It also shows how the contributions of the founding fellows of the Society, whose interests originated in collecting and insect natural history, laid the foundations of many of the present day fields of entomological research.  相似文献

Envelope membranes were isolated from potato tuber amyloplastby a discontinuous sucrose density gradient and high speed centrifugation.These membranes catalyzed the transfer of [14C]glucose fromUDP-[14C]glucose to endogenous sterol acceptors and, in turn,catalyzed the esterification of steryl glucosides with fattyacids from an endogenous acyl donor. The synthesis of sterylglucosides was stimulated in the presence of Triton. X-100,while formation of acyl steryl glucosides was inhibited by thedetergent. However, in the presence of an added sterol acceptorand Triton X-100, the inhibition of acyl steryl glucoside synthesiswas overcome by the addition of phosphatidylethanolamine. Theenzyme involved in steryl glucoside formation was solubilizedby treatment of the envelope membranes with 0.3% Triton X-100.The solubilized enzyme had an almost absolute requirement forsterol acceptors. Effects of prochloraz, imazalil, diclobutrazol, triadimefon and propiconazole were studied. Compared with most systemic fungicides previously tested they were all relatively toxic to R. trifolii on agar. Effects of soil residues of the compounds on the growth and nitrogen fixing capacity of white clover were measured. The lowest concentration of the fungicides used was that which would be present if all the active ingredient from a single application remained unchanged and evenly distributed in the top 5 cm of soil. This concentration of diclobutrazol decreased the size and weight of 11-wk-old clover plants. The rate of nitrogen fixation was reduced by twice this concentration and root nodulation by four times this amount. None of the other fungicides had any significant effect. The possibility of field application of diclobutrazol to cereals causing damage to clover crops is discussed. It is questionable whether harmful soil residues will ever accumulate from normal usage of the fungicide but exceeding the recommended rate of application, or application to cereals undersown with clover, might cause undesirable effects on the clover.  相似文献

FISHER, J. B. & EWERS, F. W., 1992. Xylem pathways in liana stems with variant secondary growth. The three-dimensional construction of stem xylem in tropical lianas (woody vines) was studied using several approaches: 1. observations of the xylem surface in stems with bark removed after NaOH treatment or natural retting; 2. reconstructions from serial transverse sections; 3. movement of dye solutions up isolated xylem sectors in intact plants, and 4. flow of dye solutions down branches and xylem sectors in isolated stem segments. Long distance (up to several metres) xylem pathways in unbranched stems and connections between lateral branches and main stems are described for !5 species in eight families which represented seven differnt patterns of secondary growth. The xylem in even the most complex stems is integrated by three-dimensional interconnections of xylem regions which may appear isolated in transverse section. Interconnections are most common at leaf and branch nodes. Some old stems have peripheral xylem that remains isolated over long distances in unbranched stems, but even these had structural and physiological interconnections between xylem regions at branch nodes.  相似文献

Background aims

Preclinical and observational reports indicate that adipose tissue (AT) is a safe and promising tool to treat non-healing venous leg ulcers (VLUs).

Methods

From an initial cohort of 38 patients, 16 patients affected by non-healing VLUs were randomly allocated to the experimental arm (5 men and 3 women) and control arm (5 men and 3 women). In the experimental arm, wounds were treated by debridement, centrifuged adipose tissue (CAT), advanced dressings and compression. No experimental treatment (CAT) was administered to the control arm. We investigated the functional and the immunophenotypical features of the harvested CAT-derived stem cells. The primary outcome measures were healing time and safety of the cell treatment. Secondary outcomes were pain evaluated by numeric rating scale (NRS), complete wound healing at 24 weeks by Margolis Index and wound-healing process expressed in square centimeters per week. The various immunophenotypic and functional characteristics of CAT-derived stem cells were then correlated with the clinical outcomes.

Results

No major adverse events were recorded. The healing time was significantly faster by applying CAT, 17.5 ± 7.0 weeks versus 24.5 ± 4.9 weeks recorded in the control arm (P < 0.036). NRS dropped after the first week to 2.7 ± 2.0 in the experimental arm versus 6.6 ± 3.0 in the control group (P < 0.01). The rate of healing at the 24th week was not significantly different between arms. Interestingly, we found a strong reverse correlation between the percent of CD34+/CD45 non-hematopoietic cells, respectively, with the healing time (r?=?–0.894, P < 0.041) and NRS (r?=?–0.934, P < 0.020).

Conclusions

CAT is safe and may accelerate healing time in VLUs as well as reduce wound pain. The percentage of CD34+/CD45 cells in stromal vascular fraction (SVF) seems to be a predictive biomarker of successful CAT treatment in these patients.  相似文献
