Abstract Chenopodium album L. plants, grown under controlled environmental conditions on different levels of soil nitrate, produced seeds with proportionately different NO?3 contents. Regardless of the endogenous NO?3 content, few seeds germinated in water or upon treatment with KNO3. Ethylene promoted germination, and the extent of germination was positively correlated with the endogenous seed NO?3 content. Combined application of ethylene and KNO3 in the dark had a synergistic effect on NO?3 -deficient seed. The synergism between ethylene and KNO3 was attributable to the NO?3 moiety of the nitrate salt. Ethylene and light showed moderate synergism in seeds with low or high endogenous nitrate. Addition of nitrate, however, masked the interaction between ethylene and light. Gibberellic acid4+7 (GA4+7) or red light, each alone or combined with KNO3, had little effect on germination. When applied together in the dark, ethylene and GA4+7 synergistically enhanced the germination of NO?3-deficient seed. The combined effects of the two hormones on this seed were further enhanced by the addition of KNO3. There was no synergism between ethylene and GA4+7 in NO?3-rich seed. These interactions among GA4+7, ethylene and KNO3 were not affected by light. The results confirm and further elaborate our earlier finding that the sensitivity of C. album seeds to ethylene may depend on nitrate availability.  相似文献

Isolates of Ustilago maydis (D.C.) Cda are known to differ in the degree to which they can parasitise maize and, as no differential reaction occurs between pathogen and host, these differences must be differences in aggressiveness. Inoculation of juvenile maize plants induced morphological changes which provided a means of assessing and distinguishing U. maydis isolates in respect of their aggressiveness. Thus it was possible to carry out a survey of the genetic architecture of aggressiveness in natural populations of the pathogen. The distribution of aggressiveness within a single gall suggested that selection had taken place over a number of generations in favour of genes or gene systems tending to increase aggressiveness. Diallele analyses of isolates from two natural populations revealed that aggressiveness had a low heritability and was determined by genes exhibiting mainly non-allelic interaction. It has been proposed that horizontal resistance in host cultivars would have a more long lasting protective effect against disease. However, the genetic architecture of aggressiveness in U. maydis should enable the pathogen to respond rapidly to changes in host resistance and the skewed distribution found within a single gall tends to support this. Therefore, the use of higher levels of host resistance should rapidly select for higher aggressiveness in the pathogen.  相似文献

Functions of α‐ and β‐branch carotenoids in whole‐plant acclimation to photo‐oxidative stress were studied in Arabidopsis thaliana wild‐type (wt) and carotenoid mutants, lut ein deficient (lut2, lut5), n on‐p hotochemical q uenching1 (npq1) and s uppressor of z eaxanthin‐l ess1 (szl1) npq1 double mutant. Photo‐oxidative stress was applied by exposing plants to sunflecks. The sunflecks caused reduction of chlorophyll content in all plants, but more severely in those having high α‐ to β‐branch carotenoid composition (α/β‐ratio) (lut5, szl1npq1). While this did not alter carotenoid composition in wt or lut2, which accumulates only β‐branch carotenoids, increased xanthophyll levels were found in the mutants with high α/β‐ratios (lut5, szl1npq1) or without xanthophyll‐cycle operation (npq1, szl1npq1). The PsbS protein content increased in all sunfleck plants but lut2. These changes were accompanied by no change (npq1, szl1npq1) or enhanced capacity (wt, lut5) of NPQ. Leaf mass per area increased in lut2, but decreased in wt and lut5 that showed increased NPQ. The sunflecks decelerated primary root growth in wt and npq1 having normal α/β‐ratios, but suppressed lateral root formation in lut5 and szl1npq1 having high α/β‐ratios. The results highlight the importance of proper regulation of the α‐ and β‐branch carotenoid pathways for whole‐plant acclimation, not only leaf photoprotection, under photo‐oxidative stress.  相似文献

In this review a critical analysis is made of the quantitative DNA variations that take place during plant development. These include underreplication, loss and amplification of repeated sequences; particular attention is devoted to quantitative variations of non-coding DNA sequences. Examples reported in the literature are analysed in relation to the different biological phenomena they accompany such as vegetative development, phase changes, senescence, dedifferentiation or tumour formation. The author also considers the influence that external elements such as growth factors, chemical substances, culture medium composition, or, also, different stimuli of environmental character, can have on these quantitative variations of nuclear DNA sequences. Finally the different hypotheses on the role that repetitive DNA sequences (particularly those that are highly repeated) can have on the life of the cell are analysed and discussed. The experimental evidence, although fragmentary and sometimes contradictory, leads to the conclusion that the plant genome is not so ‘quantitatively static’ as was once hought, but is instead characterized by a dynamic plasticity; the role of repeated DNA sequences in the plant development seems to be much more active, than the role hypothesized by many authors in the past.  相似文献

The suborder Myrmeleontiformia is a derived lineage of lacewings (Insecta: Neuroptera) including the families Psychopsidae, Nemopteridae, Nymphidae, Ascalaphidae and Myrmeleontidae. In particular, Myrmeleontidae (antlions) are the most diverse neuropteran family, representing a conspicuous component of the insect fauna of xeric environments. We present the first detailed quantitative phylogenetic analysis of Myrmeleontiformia, based on 107 larval morphological and behavioural characters for 36 genera whose larvae are known (including at least one representative of all the subfamilies of the suborder). Four related families were used as outgroups to polarize character states. Phylogenetic analyses were conducted using both parsimony and Bayesian methods. The reconstructions resulting from our analyses corroborate the monophyly of Myrmeleontiformia. Within this clade, Psychopsidae are recovered as the sister family to all the remaining taxa. Nemopteridae (including both subfamilies Nemopterinae and Crocinae) are recovered as monophyletic and sister to the clade comprising Nymphidae + (Myrmeleontidae + Ascalaphidae). Nymphidae consist of two well‐supported clades corresponding to the subfamilies Nymphinae and Myiodactylinae. Our results suggest that Ascalaphidae may not be monophyletic, as they collapse into an unresolved polytomy under the Bayesian analysis. In addition, the recovered phylogenetic relationships diverge from the traditional classification scheme for ascalaphids. Myrmeleontidae are reconstructed as monophyletic, with the subfamilies Stilbopteryginae, Palparinae and Myrmeleontinae. We retrieved a strongly supported clade comprising taxa with a fossorial habit of the preimaginal instars, which represents a major antlion radiation, also including the monophyletic pit‐trap building species.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The sesquiterpenoid euplotin C is a secondary metabolite produced by the ciliated protist Euplotes crassus and provides a mechanism for damping populations of potential competitors. Indeed, E. crassus is virtually resistant to its own product while different non-producer species representing an unbiased sample of the marine, interstitial, ciliate diversity are sensitive. For instance, euplotin C exerts a marked disruption of different homeostatic mechanisms in Euplotes vannus . We demonstrate by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay that euplotin C quickly decreases viability and mitochondrial function of E. vannus with a very high efficacy and at micromolar potency. In addition, euplotin C induces apoptosis in E. vannus as 4,6-diamino-2-phenylindole and terminal transferase dUTP nick end labeling staining show the rapid condensation and fragmentation of nuclear material in cells treated with euplotin C. These effects occur without detectable permeabilisation or rupture of cell membranes and with no major changes in the overall morphology, although some traits, such as vacuolisation and disorganized microtubules, can be observed by transmission electron microscopy. In particular, E. vannus show profound changes of the mitochondrial ultrastructure. Finally, we also show that caspase activity in E. vannus is increased by euplotin C. These data elucidate the pro-apoptotic role of euplotin C and suggest a mechanism for its impact on natural selection.  相似文献

To examine the within- and among-population genetic structure of Plamopara viticola oosporic populations in Europe, 8991 lesions from 32 vineyard plots were collected and analysed. Four multi-allelic microsatellite markers were used to genotype the pathogen. All populations had high levels of gene and genotypic diversity. Most populations were in Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium and thus randomly mating. Among P. viticola populations, significant low to moderate genetic differentiation was observed, even between geographically close populations. This genetic differentiation was also evident in the neighbour-joining phylogenetic genetic distance tree, showing clear substructure and distinguishing mainly five clusters based on geographical origin. Significant isolation by distance was found in central European P. viticola populations, suggesting a step-wise migration model. No significant isolation by distance was found within Greek populations, most probably owing to natural geographical barriers such as the sea and mountains, as well as the frequent population bottlenecks occurring in these populations, preventing natural migration among populations. The high variability of P. viticola provides explanation for its successful infestation of the heterogeneous European vineyards in the last 125 years after its introduction.  相似文献

Abstract. In many plant physiological studies, quantitative determination of ethylene in aqueous solutions is necessary. We describe two methods for such measurements based on vacuum extraction, or on stripping ethylene from solution with the carrier gas of a gas chromatograph. The gas-stripping technique is limited by the small sample volumes that can be used, whereas the vacuum extraction technique can accommodate much larger volumes and is useful when the ethylene concentration in the solution is very low. The use of these techniques will facilitate the treatment of submerged plant tissues with known amounts of ethylene, and also the quantitative determination of ethylene from tissues grown in either static or continuous flow liquid cultures.  相似文献

Abstract:  A moderately diverse larger foraminiferal fauna from the north-east Italian 'Arenarie e calcari di S. Urbano' formation with important stratigraphic, palaeoecological and palaeobiogeographical implications is described with respect to its position in the Western Tethys area. The fauna is dominated by hyaline perforated and porcellaneous forms including Amphistegina , Archaias , Austrotrillina , Miogypsinoides , Neoplanorbulinella , Neorotalia , Nummulites , Operculina and Spiroclypeus. The presence of Miogypsinoides complanatus allows the age of the formation to be determined as late Chattian (Shallow Benthic Zone SBZ 23). The palaeoenvironmental setting is interpreted as a shallow ramp environment ranging from (1) well lit, highly translucent, shallowest part of the photic zone characterized by Archaias and Austrotrillina , the deeper part of the inner ramp with Nummulites , to (2) the shallow part of the middle ramp with Spiroclypeus and miogypsinids and Operculina , to (3) a deeper middle-ramp setting dominated by coralline rhodoliths along with lepidocylinids. The presence of Archaias hensoni Smout and Eames shows that members of much more diverse Middle Eastern associations of shallow-water larger porcellaneous foraminifera are also present in the north-western parts of the Western Tethys, and reveals a corresponding diversity gradient among larger foraminiferal faunas in the Western Tethys, which is related to a decrease in temperature.  相似文献
