Intrathalline and intracellular chlorophyll concentrations togetherwith thallus structure were studied in 12 species of the lichenfamily Umbilicariaceae in order to explore pigment limitationsfor light absorption and for maximum rates of net photosynthesis(Amax). Species from high light environments tended to haverelatively low chlorophyll concentrations and vice versa. Chlorophyllconcentration on a surface area basis of all species studiedwas sufficient to absorb 80–99% of the incident light,which led us to believe that chlorophyll concentration was nota limiting factor for Amax. Amaxof Umbilicariaceae was smallerthan Amaxof leaves of vascular plants, both on a dry weightand on a surface area basis. These differences slightly decreasedbut did not disappear when referred to the chlorophyll concentrationof the photosynthetic tissues, but reference units had a confoundingeffect in the comparisons. Differences in Amaxon a dry weightbasis between Umbilicariaceae and vascular plants disappearedwhen comparisons were made with the whole plant and not simplywith the leaf. We found a significant, inverse relationshipbetween amount of alga and chlorophyll concentration withinthe algal cells in the lichens studied. This was interpretedas a mechanism to avoid pigment self-shading within the algallayer, distributing more efficiently the photosynthetic pigmentsover a given surface area, and is the first indication of sucha mechanism in lichens. It is suggested that thallus structureand physiology have a larger influence on the observed low Amaxofthe lichens studied than chlorophyll content. Comparative larval morphology was used to elucidate phylogenetic relationships within the Pinnotheridae and the Dissodactylus species complex. Within the family, seven zoeal and six megalopal characters suggested two equally parsimonious phylogenetic hypotheses for pinnotherid larvae, both with Ostracotheres tridacnae representing the sister group for the Dissodactylus complex. Results indicated that the genus Pinnotheres is a polyphyletic taxon, and that the traditional subfamilial arrangement comprises paraphyletic taxa within the subfamilies Pinnotherinae and Pinnothereliinae. Certain evidence has suggested that Fabia and Juxtafubia should be excluded from the Pinnotherinae and placed into the Pinnothereliinae. Larval and adult morphology suggested that Pinnotheres politus should be included within Tumidotheres. The phylogenetic analysis within the Dissodactylus complex involved one zoeal and 16 megalopal characters. Results suggested a single phylogenetic hypothesis based on larval morphology. Combining adult morphology with larval evidence resulted in two equally parsimonious phylogenetic hypotheses, one of which agreed with a previously suggested hypothesis based only on adult characters.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. This paper reports on a new phenomenon in the ciliated protists: cytoplasmically determined early sexual maturity. Stock MN1 of the marine hypotrich Euplotes crassus matures immediately after conjugation. We analyzed the respective contribuboas of the nucleus and the cytoplasm to the inheritance of this stable condition. A genetic marker, and new methods in E. crassus for cytoplasmic labeling, production of amicronucleates, and induction of selfing were used. Crosses within and among the early mature (EM) variants and late mature (LM) "wild type" lines were done in ovarious combinations. Descendants of EM conjugants continued to be EM, and descendants of LM continued to be LM, regardless of the different experimental approaches used. The results of the crosses clearly show that the clonally stable, variant EM phenotype is transmitted at conjugation in a non-Mendelian manner through the cytoplasmic lineage. The expression of the trait is independent of the micronuclear genome, but the precise site and nature of the hereditary basis is unknown.  相似文献

Amoebae were isolated from a natural thermal water source in Michoacaan, Mexico, in September 1986. Two 500-ml samples were taken from pools with water at 45°C and 46°C and concentrated at 2,000 g for 15 min. The sediment was seeded on nonnutritive agar plates and incubated at 42°C. The isolates were axenized in bactocasitone-serum medium. The identification of the isolates was based on their morphology, total protein and isoenzyme patterns by agarose isoelectric focusing, serology, fine structure, agglutination with Concanavalin A, sensitivity to trimethoprim, capacity to kill mice, and their cytopathic effect in Vero cells. The results showed several morphophysiological, biochemical and serological differences between the isolates and the type strain Aq/9/1/ 45D of Naegleria lovaniensis. These remarkable differences provide sufficient evidence to consider one of the isolates a new subspecies, and the other one a morphological variant of N. l. lovaniensis, which can be differentiated from other Naegleriae by their morphology, biochemistry, serology and physiology. The authors propose the name tarasca for the subspecies and purepecha for the morphological variant.  相似文献

Mating is an energy demanding process, imposing risks to physical injuries, pathogen infection and predation. Nevertheless, repeated and multiple mating are widespread even in insect species where nuptial gifts are not involved. The effects of repeated mating, by the same male, are examined on the reproductive performance of female Southern green stink bug Nezara viridula (L.). Fecundity is reduced in females mated three or four times, although there is increased longevity. Females mated once or twice produce more egg clusters and concentrate egg‐laying activity in the early part of adult life, whereas those mating more often lay eggs throughout the life span, with fewer egg clusters. Although fecundity is negatively affected by the number of matings, egg fertility remains unaffected.  相似文献

The transition zone between the Mediterranean and Atlantic basins has been extensively addressed in phylogeographical studies of marine species. However, biases exist towards the analysis of highly dispersive species, and there is a higher sampling effort in European coasts compared to North Africa. This may be hindering a detailed understanding of the historical and contemporary processes that shaped patterns of population genetic structure in the region. In the present study, we investigated the phylogeographical and phylogenetic patterns of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequences from a species with direct development and low dispersal abilities, Stenosoma nadejda (Rezig, 1989). The study area included 13 localities along the Atlantic and Mediterranean North African coasts, as well as the Alboran Sea. A new Stenosoma species, from the coasts of Algeria and Alboran Island, was discovered. For S. nadejda, phylogeographical analyses revealed three distinct clades: one in the Iberian Atlantic plus the Alboran Sea, one in the western Mediterranean, and another in the Atlantic coast of Africa. Haplotypes from the Alboran Island were more related to those from the western Mediterranean coast (east of the Almeria–Oran Front). 1. The effect of habitat fragmentation on freshwater species has been addressed using brown trout Salmo trutta L. as a model species with a dendritic population structure. 2. Microsatellite loci were employed as molecular markers. Levels of gene flow and population subdivision were determined in more than 1200 brown trout individuals inhabiting four south European rivers with contrasting patterns of fragmentation, defined by the presence of barriers. 3. The genetic units in the four rivers were restricted by artificial barriers, and gene flow among samples within each river was associated with the level of fragmentation of the river. 4. Loss of genetic diversity and dislocation of the dendritic model have been detected in fragmented rivers. These results emphasise the importance of mitigating the impact of dams by constructing passages to restore gene flow along the river, for fish and other migratory species, as well as the need for caution in relation to stocking in isolated areas to avoid problems of inbreeding.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The sesquiterpenoid euplotin C is a secondary metabolite produced by the ciliated protist Euplotes crassus and provides a mechanism for damping populations of potential competitors. Indeed, E. crassus is virtually resistant to its own product while different non-producer species representing an unbiased sample of the marine, interstitial, ciliate diversity are sensitive. For instance, euplotin C exerts a marked disruption of different homeostatic mechanisms in Euplotes vannus . We demonstrate by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay that euplotin C quickly decreases viability and mitochondrial function of E. vannus with a very high efficacy and at micromolar potency. In addition, euplotin C induces apoptosis in E. vannus as 4,6-diamino-2-phenylindole and terminal transferase dUTP nick end labeling staining show the rapid condensation and fragmentation of nuclear material in cells treated with euplotin C. These effects occur without detectable permeabilisation or rupture of cell membranes and with no major changes in the overall morphology, although some traits, such as vacuolisation and disorganized microtubules, can be observed by transmission electron microscopy. In particular, E. vannus show profound changes of the mitochondrial ultrastructure. Finally, we also show that caspase activity in E. vannus is increased by euplotin C. These data elucidate the pro-apoptotic role of euplotin C and suggest a mechanism for its impact on natural selection.  相似文献
