Adult bobolinks were tested in a planetarium under patterns of nonrotating artificial stars to determine the influence of natural and modified magnetic fields on their migratory orientation. The modified magnetic field was of the same total intensity as the natural field, but the vertical vector was reversed, causing the resulting total vector to point up and north (compared to the natural northern hemisphere vector pointing down and north). When exposed to the artificial magnetic field, the birds reversed their preferred headings relative to the stellar and geographic references. This response is consistent with the use of an inclination compass. Although 60 % of the individuals reversed their headings the first night, some individuals took up to 5 nights (mean = 2.1 nights).  相似文献

Summary Radar and visual observations were made on water bird migration throuh the Southwest at six stations from February 1973 through November 1974. The influence of weather on nocturnal non-passerine migration in the Southwest is less significant than reported for passerine migration elsewhere. Both seasonality and weather factors influence water bird migration, but the relative contribution of each is strongly dependent on the specific migration season. Spring migration, which has more extreme weather conditions, shows a stronger correlation to meteorological factors. Autumn migration in the Southwest rarely experiences severe weather, and consequently shows a stronger correlation to seasonality than to weather.The intensity of spring non-passerine migration was highly correlated with height of freezing level, temperature at sunset and midnight, humidity at sunset, cloud height at sunset and midnight, following winds aloft, and inversely related to change in temperature and day of the year. The most important variables listed by the stepwise linear multiple regression analysis were freezing level, following winds aloft, day of the year, and surface wind speed. When the height of the lowest cloud layer was allowed to enter the regression analysis, freezing level and cloud height were the most significant variables, with the intensity of migration higher with higher freezing level and higher cloud base. The most important variables predicting the occurrence or absence of migration were freezing level, barometric pressure and dew point.Autumn water bird migration was most highly correlated with cloud height and day of the year, and inversely correlated with humidity. The most important variables from the stepwise regression analysis and discriminant function analysis were day of the year, 670 m following-wind speed, and temperature. When cloud height was allowed to enter the model, it was the only significant factor influencing migration. As in spring, higher rates of autumn migration occurred with higher freezing levels.More migration occurred on the Great Plains than in the Rocky Mountains; but within the mountains, geography had little influence on the intensity of migration. Indirect evidence indicates that waterfowl and shorebirds move over the mountains (up to 2000 m above the surrounding terrain and 3500 m above sea level), rather than around them.  相似文献

Background:

Vascular growth is a prerequisite for adipose tissue (AT) development and expansion. Some AT cytokines and hormones have effects on vascular development, like vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF‐A), angiopoietin (ANG‐1), ANG‐2 and angiopoietin‐like protein‐4 (ANGPTL‐4).

Methods:

In this study, the independent and combined effects of diet‐induced weight loss and exercise on AT gene expression and proteins levels of those angiogenic factors were investigated. Seventy‐nine obese males and females were randomized to: 1. Exercise‐only (EXO; 12‐weeks exercise without diet‐restriction), 2. Hypocaloric diet (DIO; 8‐weeks very low energy diet (VLED) + 4‐weeks weight maintenance diet) and 3. Hypocaloric diet and exercise (DEX; 8‐weeks VLED + 4‐weeks weight maintenance diet combined with exercise throughout the 12 weeks). Blood samples and fat biopsies were taken before and after the intervention.

Results:

Weight loss was 3.5 kg in the EXO group and 12.3 kg in the DIO and DEX groups. VEGF‐A protein was non‐significantly reduced in the weight loss groups. ANG‐1 protein levels were significantly reduced 22‐25% after all three interventions (P < 0.01). The ANG‐1/ANG‐2 ratio was also decreased in all three groups (P < 0.05) by 27‐38%. ANGPTL‐4 was increased in the EXO group (15%, P < 0.05) and 9% (P < 0.05) in the DIO group. VEGF‐A, ANG‐1, and ANGPTL‐4 were all expressed in human AT, but only ANGPTL‐4 was influenced by the interventions.

Conclusions:

Our data show that serum VEGF‐A, ANG‐1, ANG‐2, and ANGPTL‐4 levels are influenced by weight changes, indicating the involvement of these factors in the obese state. Moreover, it was found that weight loss generally was associated with a reduced angiogenic activity in the circulation.  相似文献

Passive acoustic monitoring can be used for many purposes including biodiversity and habitat assessments and studying the ecology of populations, communities and soundscapes. As such, acoustic recording devices are essential data collection tools for bioacousticians and soundscape ecologists. Currently available commercial options are typically expensive and limited to recording either ultrasonic or audible frequencies. Here, we present the AURITA (Audible and Ultrasonic Recording In TAndem) for the autonomous collection of both audible and ultrasonic acoustic data. This self-contained, modular unit combines the Solo, an open-source, Raspberry-Pi-based recorder and a commercially available bat recorder, the Peersonic RPA2, enabling it to capture sounds from 60 Hz to 192 kHz in WAV format. The configuration presented costs ~£350 (excluding memory cards and batteries) to produce and can be maintained and repaired in the field. Two nine-week field tests involving 12 AURITA units were conducted in 2016 and 2017 and confirmed their reliability, resulting in 34,093 h of audible data and 551 h of ultrasonic data; all units were retrieved successfully and intact. The AURITA proved to be reliable in the field and produced high-quality acoustic data, making it ideal for simultaneous monitoring in both audible and ultrasonic frequencies over continuous periods of time.  相似文献

This study was undertaken in order to examine whether any connection existed between the amounts of iron in forage and the sporadic occurrence of scrapie observed in certain parts of Iceland. As iron and manganese are considered antagonistic in plants, calculation of the Fe/Mn ratios was also included by using results from Mn determination earlier performed in the same samples. Forage samples (n = 170) from the summer harvests of 2001–2003, were collected from 47 farms for iron and manganese analysis. The farms were divided into four categories: 1. Scrapie-free farms in scrapie-free areas (n = 9); 2. Scrapie-free farms in scrapie-afflicted areas (n = 17); 3. Scrapie-prone farms (earlier scrapie-afflicted, restocked farms) (n = 12); 4. Scrapie-afflicted farms (n = 9). Farms in categories 1 and 2 are collectively referred to as scrapie-free farms. The mean iron concentration in forage samples from scrapie-afflicted farms was significantly higher than in forage samples from farms in the other scrapie categories (P = 0.001). The mean Fe/Mn ratio in forage from scrapie-afflicted farms was significantly higher than in forage from scrapie-free and scrapie-prone farms (P < 0.001). The results indicated relative dominance of iron over manganese in forage from scrapie-afflicted farms as compared to farms in the other categories. Thus thorough knowledge of iron, along with manganese, in soil and vegetation on sheep farms could be a pivot in studies on sporadic scrapie.  相似文献
