A new role for PGRP-S (Tag7) in immune defense: lymphocyte migration is induced by a chemoattractant complex of Tag7 with Mts1

PGRP-S (Tag7) is an innate immunity protein involved in the antimicrobial defense systems, both in insects and in mammals. We have previously shown that Tag7 specifically interacts with several proteins, including Hsp70 and the calcium binding protein S100A4 (Mts1), providing a number of novel cellular functions. Here we show that Tag7–Mts1 complex causes chemotactic migration of lymphocytes, with NK cells being a preferred target. Cells of either innate immunity (neutrophils and monocytes) or acquired immunity (CD4⁺ and CD8⁺ lymphocytes) can produce this complex, which confirms the close connection between components of the 2 branches of immune response.     

Seasonal dynamics of infecting ability of the flea Citellophilus tesquorum altaicus in the Tuva natural focus of the plague

The infecting ability of the fleas Citellophilus tesquorum altaicus loff, 1936, the main plague vectors in the Tuva natural focus, was experimentally studied in different periods of the epizootic season. Seasonal dynamics in the efficiency of infecting the long-tailed Siberian souslik with the plague causative agent through flea bites was noticed. Seasonal differences in infectivity of the "blocked" flea bites are revealed. An increase of infected experimental animals with a generalization of infection process in the period of epizooty activation in the natural focus was observed. A resistance of the long-tailed Siberian souslik to the plague agent infection through flea bites in the spring season was registered.     

Neurite-stimulating activity of secretions from the Hirudo medicinalis salivary gland in cultured sensory neurons

Components of leech (Hirudo medicinalis) salivary gland secretion (high molecular mass bdelin B, bdellastasin, eglin C, destabilize) were used to investigate their neurotrophic effect on organotypic culture of dorsal root ganglia of the 10-11-day old chicken embryos. Destabilize and high molecular mass bdelin B in concentrations of 0.01, 0.02, 0.05 and 0.1 ng/ml, bdellastasin in concentrations of 0.02 and 0.05 ng/ml, eglin C in concentrations of 0.1 ng/ml exhibit neurite-stimulating effect as compared to the control.     

<Emphasis Type="Italic">Pseudomonas aeruginosa</Emphasis> inhibits <Emphasis Type="Italic">in-vitro Candida</Emphasis> biofilm development

Background  

Elucidation of the communal behavior of microbes in mixed species biofilms may have a major impact on understanding infectious diseases and for the therapeutics. Although, the structure and the properties of monospecies biofilms and their role in disease have been extensively studied during the last decade, the interactions within mixed biofilms consisting of bacteria and fungi such as Candida spp. have not been illustrated in depth. Hence, the aim of this study was to evaluate the interspecies interactions of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and six different species of Candida comprising C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. krusei, C. tropicalis, C. parapsilosis, and C. dubliniensis in dual species biofilm development.     

Individual alpha activity of electroencephalogram and nonverbal creativity

The main objective of present correlational investigation was to clarify relationships between nonverbal creativity indices and individual electroencephalogram alpha activity indices: individual alpha peak frequency, alpha band width, magnitude of alpha desynchronization and alpha spindle indices such as duration, amplitude, variability and skewness. The EEG was recorded in 98 healthy male right-handed subjects. Scores of nonverbal creativity (i. e., fluency, originality, and flexibility) were assessed using the Torrance test of nonverbal performance. The study showed that fluency in creative performance was associated with individual alpha peak frequency and alpha spindles duration, whereas originality and plasticity--with individual alpha band width and spindle amplitude variability. The findings also show that both highest and lowest individual alpha peak frequency indices are associated with enhanced scores of originality. It is suggested that individual alpha activity indices could be presented as individual predictors of fluency, plasticity and originality of nonverbal creativity.     

Molecular determinants of caste differentiation in the highly eusocial honeybee <Emphasis Type="Italic">Apis mellifera</Emphasis>

Background  

In honeybees, differential feeding of female larvae promotes the occurrence of two different phenotypes, a queen and a worker, from identical genotypes, through incremental alterations, which affect general growth, and character state alterations that result in the presence or absence of specific structures. Although previous studies revealed a link between incremental alterations and differential expression of physiometabolic genes, the molecular changes accompanying character state alterations remain unknown.
