Plants of berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) cv. Taborwere raised under conditions inhibiting the acquisition of coldhardiness (non-hardened) or inducing cold hardiness (hardened).All non-hardened plants developed an elongated shoot and exhibitedconsiderable frost sensitivity, as measured by the extent ofthe reduction in yield of variable chlorophyll fluorescenceafter exposure to sub-zero temperature. Hardened plants developeda shorter shoot, with fewer leaves and a greater percentageof dry matter in the root system. These parameters were associatedwith a marked increase in frost resistance. Exogenous applicationof ABA to plants effected similar morphological modificationsin both hardening and non-hardening temperature regimes; plantsdeveloped a shorter primary shoot axis and leaves exhibiteda marked increase in frost hardiness. In berseem clover ABAcan thus substitute, at least partially, for the low temperaturetreatment required to induce cold hardiness. Spraying plantsraised under hardening conditions with gibberellic acid reversedthe effects of the hardening treatment, since they developedan elongated shoot and exhibited frost sensitivity comparableto non-treated plants grown under non-hardening conditions.It is concluded that these endogenous hormones are directlyinvolved in triggering changes in morphogenesis which accompanyphysiological and metabolic events associated with the inductionof plant cold hardiness. 1. (14)C from [1-(14)C]glucose injected intraperitoneally into mice is incorporated into glutamate, aspartate and glutamine in the brain to a much greater extent than (14)C from [2-(14)C]glucose. This difference for [1-(14)C]glucose and [2-(14)C]glucose increases with time. The amount of (14)C in C-1 of glutamate increases steadily with time with both precursors. It is suggested that a large part of the glutamate and aspartate pools in brain are in close contact with intermediates of a fast-turning tricarboxylic acid cycle. 2. (14)C from [1-(14)C]acetate and [2-(14)C]acetate is incorporated to a much larger extent into glutamine than into glutamate. An examination of the time-course of (14)C incorporated into glutamine and glutamate reveals that glutamine is not formed from the glutamate pool, labelled extensively by glucose, but from a small glutamate pool. This small glutamate pool is not derived from an intermediate of a fast-turning tricarboxylic acid cycle. 3. It is proposed that two different tricarboxylic acid cycles exist in brain.  相似文献

Two cultivars of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cvs. Alexandria and Hanno) and three cultivars of winter wheat (cvs. Riband, Mercia and Haven) were grown at two concentrations of CO2 [ambient (355 pmol mol?1) and elevated (708 μmol mol?1)] under two O3 regimes [clean air (< 5 nmol mol?1 O3) and polluted air (15 nmol mol?1 O3 at night rising to a midday maximum of 75 nmol mol?1)] in a phytotron at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Between the two-leaf stage and anthesis, measurements of leaf gas-exchange, non-structural carbohydrate content, visible O3 damage, growth, dry matter partitioning, yield components and root development were made in order to examine responses to elevated CO2 and/or O3. Growth at elevated CO2 resulted in a sustained increase in the rate of CO2 assimilation, but after roughly 6 weeks' exposure there was evidence of a slight decline in the photosynthetic rate (c.-15%) measured under growth conditions which was most pronounced in the winter cultivars. Enhanced rates of CO2 assimilation were accompanied by a decrease in stomatal conductance which improved the instantaneous water use efficiency of individual leaves. CO2 enrichment stimulated shoot and root growth to an equivalent extent, and increased tillering and yield components, however, non-structural carbohydrates still accumulated in source leaves. In contrast, long-term exposure to O3 resulted in a decreased CO2 assimilation rate (c. -13%), partial stomatal closure, and the accumulation of fructan and starch in leaves in the light. These effects were manifested in decreased rates of shoot and root growth, with root growth more severely affected than shoot growth. In the combined treatment growth of O3-treated plants was enhanced by elevated CO2, but there was little evidence that CO2 enrichment afforded additional protection against O3 damage. The reduction in growth induced by O3 at elevated CO2 was similar to that induced by O3 at ambient CO2 despite additive effects of the individual gases on stomatal conductance that would be expected to reduce the O3 flux by 20%, and also CO2-induced increases in the provision of substrates for detoxification and repair processes. These observations suggest that CO2 enrichment may render plants more susceptible to O3 damage at the cellular level. Possible mechanisms are discussed.  相似文献

  • 1 The feeding behaviour of nymphs of the perlid stonefly Dinocras cephalotes when presented with two different mayfly prey types on different substrates was examined in the laboratory.
  • 2 Most of the evidence suggested that Dinocras cephalotes did not choose between Baetis rhodani and Rhithrogena semicolomta as, under identical circumstances: (i) the survival of both prey types was the same; (ii) the predator's overall searching behaviour was similar in the presence of either mayfly, although B. rhodani was pursued more, especially on complex substrates; (iii) the number of attacks on both prey types was the same; and (iv) the intake of dry weight prey biomass over 24 h remained the same, irrespective of prey species.
  • 3 The predation efficiency (no. of prey captured/no, of encounters) of D. cephalotes decreased with increasing substrate complexity—but only with R. semicolorata as prey, and also when more than one stonefly was present—but only when B. rhodani was the prey. Predator efficiency was greater at low densities of R. semicolorata but highest at a medium density of B. rhodani.
  • 4 Increase in the body weight of D. cephalotes was greater when nymphs were fed a monospecific diet of R. semicolorata compared with one of B. rhodani. This was despite the findings that: (i) nymphs of B. rhodani contained 31.3% more protein (per mg dry body weight) than nymphs of R. semicolorata, whereas the latter contained 81.0% more chitin; and (ii) nymphs of R. semicolorata took 2.7 times as long to consume and almost twice as long to pass through the predator's gut. The longer gut passage time may have allowed a greater assimilation efficiency which may have led to the observed better growth.
  • 5 Dinocras cephalotes is thought to feed opportunistically, with a certain daily food biomass intake as its primary need rather than any specific prey preference. Foraging decisions, or opportunities, affect the fitness of individual nymphs and this may be reflected in the wide size range of contemporary nymphs found in field populations. Variation in foraging efficiency by predators and evasion success by prey, across substrate types, is thought to contribute to the well-known microdistribution patterns of species observed in lotic communities.

Abstract The Capricorn Group of islands in Australia's Great Barrier Reef Marine Park sustains one of the world's largest breeding populations of the Wedge-tailed Shearwater Puffinus pacificus. Heron Island, a 13.5 ha coral cay which supports tourist and research station leases as well as a national park, is the third largest nesting island in the group. Sample censuses of breeding burrows were conducted each year between 1985 and 1990 and a further survey was completed in 1993. These returned estimates of between 13 264±1387 and 16 337±1545 active burrows (Y±SE). Burrow densities within each of the habitats monitored showed no significant trends between years, although there were large differences in burrow density between habitats. There were roughly the same number of burrows in the developed (west) and national park (east) halves of the cay. A miniature video camera system (burrowscope), which allowed nesting chambers at the ends of burrows to be inspected, was used in 1989, 1990 and 1993. This demonstrated that around half the burrows were occupied by incubating birds. Variations were found in the distribution of incubating birds between habitats, although this did not remain constant between the years. In the 1993 season, breeding activity was traced from the burrow establishment to fledging stage. Fifty-one per cent of burrows were used for breeding (eggs laid), 77% of eggs hatched and 80% of chicks produced a fledgling. Overall breeding success for the island was estimated at 61%. In 1993 the area designated as Buildings was found to have significantly lower hatching success compared with natural habitats. Most mortality occurred at the egg stage; however, in the Fringe habitat, mortality was highest at the chick stage. Previous surveys have estimated the breeding population from burrow counts. It now appears that only about 30% of such burrows produce fledglings.  相似文献

The potential of the chlorophyll fluorescence technique in screening for frost sensitivity in a range of Trifolium species from different geographical origins was assessed by measuring the decrease in variable chlorophyll fluorescence (Fvar) of leaves after freezing at - 5°C for 60 min. The method was rapid and the results obtained agreed well with a visual assessment of freezing injury carried out after leaves were returned to optimal growth conditions for 72 h. Trifolium alexandrinum (Berseem clover) cv. Tabor originating from Israel was shown to be the most frost sensitive species studied and Trifolium subterraneum (subterranean clover) cv. Mt. Barker, from temperate regions of Australia, the most frost resistant. On extended periods of freezing, frost damage increased and this was associated with a further reduction in variable chlorophyll fluorescence and in quenching capacity of the thylakoid membranes. These results thus indicate that substantial thylakoid membrane dysfunction is induced at freezing temperatures. Furthermore, it was found that frost hardening of the frost sensitive species T. alexandrinum for 21 days at 5°C reduced the extent of damage sustained by the thylakoid membranes as shown by higher fluorescence quenching capacity, smaller reduction in variable fluorescence (Fvar) and higher initial fluorescence (Fo) when leaves of hardened plants were frozen at -5°C and -7°C.  相似文献

The growth rate of plants in a crop can be approximated by theproduct of three functions, each depending on one of the variables—plantweight, yield per unit area, and time. Assuming such an equation,several possible models of the relationship between total yieldper unit area (or mean plant weight), the plant density andthe length of the growth period are constructed by giving simpleforms to the three functions. The connection between variousyield-density models that have previously been suggested andthe present work is indicated. With growth rate assumed to beindependent of time, one or more of the derived equations fittedfive sets of published experimental data reasonably well. However,only the most general of the equations considered gave consistentlygood fits to the five data sets. The fits to a sixth data setwere much improved when growth rate depended directly on time,probably because of temperature changes during growth. Someslight but systematic differences between the models and experimentaldata are discussed.  相似文献
