The phosphorus (P) fractions and bioavailable P in the sediments from the Quanzhou Bay Estuarine Wetland Nature Reserve were investigated using chemical extraction methods for the first time to study the distribution and bioavailability of P in the reserve sediments. A hypothesis was presented suggesting that the bioavailable P in the sediments could be evaluated using the P fractions. The total phosphorus (TP), inorganic phosphorus (IP), organic phosphorus (OP), non-apatite phosphorus (NAIP), and apatite phosphorus (AP) contents in the sediments were in the ranges of 303.87–761.59 mg kg−1, 201.22–577.66 mg kg−1, 75.83–179.16 mg kg−1, 28.86–277.90 mg kg−1, and 127.36–289.94 mg kg−1, respectively. The water soluble phosphorus (WSP), readily desorbable phosphorus (RDP), algal available phosphorus (AAP), and NaHCO3 extractable phosphorus (Olsen-P) contents in the sediments were in the ranges of 0.58–357.17 mg kg−1, 80.77–586.75 mg kg−1, 1.09–24.12 mg kg−1, and 54.96–676.82 mg kg−1, respectively. The correlation analysis results showed that the NAIP was the major component of the bioavailable P and that the impact of the AP on the bioavailable phosphorus may be minimal. Due to the low TP content in the sediments of the Quanzhou Bay Estuarine Wetland Nature Reserve, the potential pollution risks of P in the sediments may not be very high. The results also show that the bioavailable P concentrations in the sediments of the Quanzhou Bay Estuarine Wetland Nature Reserve could not be evaluated by measuring the P fractions and that the hypothesis was untenable.  相似文献

This study was performed to compare the bioavailability of two organic zinc compounds, a zinc glycinate complex and a zinc amino acid chelate with that of zinc sulphate in growing pigs fed a basal diet composed mainly of wheat, barley and soybean meal. The experiment included 96 pigs with an average body weight of 8 kg, allotted to ten groups of nine to ten pigs each. The first group received the basal diet, containing 42 mg of native zinc per kg, without zinc supplementation over a period of five weeks. The other nine groups received the basal diet supplemented with 15, 30 or 50 mg of zinc/kg as zinc sulphate, zinc glycinate or the zinc amino acid chelate. Pigs fed the unsupplemented diet had a lower growth performance (body weight gain, feed conversion ratio) than the other nine groups. Supplementation of 15 mg zinc/kg diet (irrespective of zinc form) was sufficient to yield optimum growth performance. Plasma zinc concentration and activity of alkaline phosphatase were rising with increasing zinc supplementation levels up toa maximum reached at a supplementary level of 30 or 50 mg/kg diet for activity of alkaline phosphatase and plasma zinc concentration, respectively. The response of those parameters to zinc supplementation did, however, not differ between thethree zinc compounds considered. The apparent digestibility of zinc from the diet was also not different for the three zinc compounds. In conclusion, these findings show that the bioavailability of the two organic zinc compounds did not differ from that of zinc sulphate in growing pigs fed a diet with wheat, barley and soybean meal as major components.  相似文献

Cosmeceutical field, which merges cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, is nowadays a highly investigated research area, because a scientific demonstration of the claimed bioactivity of new cosmeceutical ingredients is increasingly requested. In fact, an aspect differentiating traditional cosmetics from cosmeceuticals is the identification and characterization of the active ingredients and demonstrating its efficacy in the claimed activity. An interesting group of bioactive cosmeceutical ingredients are peptides, which due to their particular properties, meets most of the requirements presented by the cosmeceutical industry when composing new formulas. In this context, beside bioactivity, two additional aspects have been recently considered, when dealing with peptides as cosmeceutical ingredients: bioavailability and stability. We describe herein novel methods applied in order to enhance peptides skin-penetration and stability, reviewing both scientific articles and patents, issued in the cosmeceutical arena.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The southern part of the Tamar valley area in SW England is highly mineralised and mines in the region were the world's principal producers of tin, copper and arsenic during the mid nineteenth century. The Devon Great Consols Mine, covering 67.6 ha (167 acres) is situated in this area. Residues from the mining activity resulted in unvegetated spoil tips and local soils highly contaminated with As (range 120–52600 μg/g As). Sequential chemical extraction procedures were conducted on eight surface samples (0–15 cm) taken from a 2.0 km long transect from within the mine site to agricultural grassland. The proportion of water extractable As in agricultural top soils was lower (0.05–0.3%) than the values obtained for mine wastes (0.02–1.2%). Arsenic was found to be concentrated in the Fe-organic and residual fractions, which accounted for up 93 % of the total As in mine spoil and nearby soils.  相似文献

Developing desorption isotherms for inorganic phosphorus (P) is a time-consuming and non-standardized procedure. Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) have been successfully used in studies of P desorption kinetics and total membrane-desorbable P, but rarely have they been used for developing P desorption isotherms. Our study had two objectives: (1) to evaluate the suitability of using multiple strips of AEMs (termed the Multiple AEM Method) to develop P desorption isotherms; and (2) to compare the Multiple AEM Method with a sequential-extraction approach using AEMs (termed the Sequential AEM Method) to determine if the manner in which AEMs were used would influence the slope of the desorption isotherm, i.e. the partition coefficient. Both methods yielded well-defined, but numerically different desorption isotherms for all levels of sorbed P. However, estimated K d values among methods were equivalent in the low and medium levels of P sorbed. The Multiple AEM method was quicker than the Sequential AEM method, but both gave similar K d values in an agriculturally significant range of soil solution concentrations. These methods should be tested on a range of soil type to determine their suitability in developing P desorption isotherms and to move toward method standardization for desorption isotherms.  相似文献

Nonexhaustive extraction (propanol, butanol, hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin [HPCD]), persulfate oxidation and biodegradability assays were employed to determine the bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in creosote-contaminated soil. After 16 weeks incubation, greater than 89% of three-ring compounds (acenaphthene, anthracene, fluorene, and phenanthrene) and 21% to 79% of four-ring compounds (benz[a]anthracene, chrysene, fluoranthene, and pyrene) were degraded by the indigenous microorganisms under biopile conditions. No significant decrease in five- (benzo[a]pyrene, benzo[b+k]fluoranthene) and six-ring compounds (benz[g,h,i]perylene, indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene) was observed. Desorption of PAHs using propanol or butanol could not predict PAH biodegradability: low-molecular-weight PAH biodegradability was underestimated whereas high-molecular-weight PAH biodegradability was overestimated. Persulfate oxidation and HPCD extraction of creosote-contaminated soil was able to predict three- and four-ring PAH biodegradability; however, the biodegradability of five-ring PAHs was overestimated. These results demonstrate that persulfate oxidation and HPCD extraction are good predictors of PAH biodegradability for compounds with octanol-water partitioning coefficients of < 6.  相似文献

Changes in Hg fractionation in soil induced by willow   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This study investigated the effect of willow (Salix viminalis ×  S. schwerinii) on soil characteristics, including changes in Hg fractionation in the soil solid phase, and Hg accumulation and distribution in pot-grown plants cultivated for 32 and 76 days in aged Hg-contaminated soil (30 mg Hg kg−1DW). Changes in soil pH and organic carbon content as well as in Hg fractionation were monitored in both rhizospheric soil and in soil without plants. Mercury fractionation was performed by a 5-step sequential soil extraction procedure. Organic carbon content increased while pH decreased in the rhizospheric soil. Both chemically defined exchangeable Hg (0.1) and Hg bound to humic and fulvic acids (1.1) decreased in the rhizospheric soil, whereas plant accumulation of Hg increased with cultivation time. The sum of the decrease of these two soil Hg fractions after 76 days of cultivation was approximately equal to the amount of Hg accumulated in plants. Furthermore, the major Hg fractions (Hg bound to residual organic matter (53), sulphides (43), and the residual fraction (2.5)) remained stable. Neither whole plant accumulation of Hg from the soil, approximately 0.2 of total Hg in soil after 76 days cultivation, nor the fraction of total plant Hg in the shoots, which accounted for about 3 of the total plant Hg pool regardless of the cultivation time, were high. The overall results suggest that plants might be suitable for phytostabilization of aged Hg-contaminated soil, where root systems trap bioavailable Hg and help to control both leaching of Hg and re-entrainment of Hg-containing particulates from a contaminated site.  相似文献

Australian science has made rapid advances in the last decade in understanding eutrophication processes in inland waters and estuaries. The freshwater research on which these advances are based was triggered by well-publicised blooms of cyanobacteria during the 1980s and early 1990s, particularly a 1000 km long bloom on the Darling River. In estuaries the study which greatly enhanced our understanding but simultaneously served to stimulate further research into estuarine eutrophication, the Port Phillip Bay Study, was initially designed to address perceived problems of toxicants in the Bay but provided profound insights into drivers for, and ecosystem responses to, eutrophication. Subsequent estuarine research has largely been stimulated by management questions arising from Australia’s increasing coastal development for residential purposes. The research has shown that some of the beliefs extant at the time of the blooms were incorrect. For example, it is now clear that stratification and light penetration, not nutrient availability, are the triggers for blooms in the impounded rivers of southeastern Australia, although nutrient exhaustion limits the biomass of blooms. Again, nitrogen seems to play as important a role as phosphorus does in controlling the biomass of these freshwater blooms. The research has also shown that aspects of eutrophication, such as nutrient transport, are dominated by different processes in different parts of Australia. Many of the biophysical processes involved in eutrophication have now been quantified sufficiently for models to be developed of such processes as sediment-nutrient release, stratification, turbidity and algal growth in both freshwater and estuarine systems. In some cases the models are reliable enough for the knowledge gained in particular waterbodies to be applied elsewhere. Thus, there is now a firm scientific foundation for managers to rely upon when managing algal blooms. Whilst these findings have already been presented to managers and communities throughout Australia, there is still a considerable way to go before they are absorbed into their modus operandi.  相似文献
