Tadpoles are often considered to be predators of mosquito larvae and are therefore beneficial for the control of certain disease vectors. Nevertheless, only a few species have actually been recorded to prey on mosquito larvae. The mosquito larvae predation rates of tadpoles of three common Thai anuran species (Bufo melanostictus, Kaloula pulchra and Hylarana raniceps) were experimentally tested. Tadpoles in varying developmental stages were used to assess a size/age effect on the predation rate. In addition, different instars of Culex quinquefasciatus were used in order to assess a prey size effect on the predation rates. All three species failed to show any evidence of mosquito larvae predation. Neither small nor large tadpoles fed on mosquito larvae. Prey size also did not affect predation. Although tadpoles do not feed on mosquito larvae, there may be other direct or indirect inter‐specific interactions that adversely impact the development of larvae in shared habitats with tadpoles.  相似文献

Tadpoles face severe packing constraints on viscera within the pleuro-peritoneal cavity because of their extremely short torsos—a feature they share with adult anurans—and the concomitant need for relatively slender torsos for efficient locomotion. We examined the effects of differences in body form and habits on the size, shape and development of viscera in three kinds of sympatric, stream-associated pelobatid tadpoles. Leptobrachium montanumlarvae are generalized, wide, deep-bodied tadpoles. Larval Leptolalax gracilis are very slender and live in the crevices between rocks on the bottom of riffles. Larval Megophrys nasuta are intermediate between the other two in body form, and live with L. montanum in a variety of microhabitats but feed at the surface film. In all three species, liver, gall bladder, arid kidneys begin development early and grow isometrically throughout larval life. The gut and pancreas have a growth spurt shortly after hatching, then grow at a constant rate until near metamorphosis when both shrink drastically. The spleen grows at a slower rate than the body throughout the larval period. Lungs do not appear in L. gracilis until the tadpole approaches metamorphosis, which accords with its benthic habits, whereas they grow throughout the larval period in L. montanum and M. nasuta. In M. nasuta, however, the lungs are unusually wide anteriorly; this shifts buoyancy forward and facilitates the head-up feeding posture characteristic of that species. Gonads appear early in L. montanum and L. gracilis, but not until near metamorphosis in M. nasuta. We suggest that accelerated gonadal development in tadpoles characterizes species that metamorphose close to their size at first reproduction. Leptobrachium montanum, with the bulkiest body and most generalized habits, has relatively and absolutely the largest gut, liver (x of combined gut and liver volume = 24%, of total volume), and kidneys. Leptolalax gracilis, the most slender tadpole, has relatively the smallest combined gut and liver volume (x = 10% of total volume). Other premetamorphic differences among the species were observed in gut coiling, liver, pancreas and kidney shape and left/right asymmetry of urogenital organs. The major interspecific differences we observed in the size, shape, and developmental patterns of viscera in tadpoles are clearly related to interspecific differences in torso shape, microhabitat distribution and mode of feeding.  相似文献

Microhabitat selection is particularly important to increase the survival rate and reproductive success of animals inhabiting heterogeneous environments. I investigated microhabitat selection of Buergeria japonica tadpoles inhabiting the stream in a coastal area to reveal how animals select their appropriate habitat under heterogeneous and unstable environments on the subtropical Okinawa Island of Japan. Tadpoles are sensitive to subtle environmental changes, and the mouths of streams in coastal areas that have intense environmental fluctuations such as desiccation and sudden changes in current velocity would be risky habitat for tadpoles. Tadpoles of B. japonica can inhabit both lotic and lentic systems. Field observations showed that, among six physical factors (water depth, water temperature, salinity, pH, current velocity, and substrate), current velocity and water temperature were key factors in microhabitat selection by tadpoles. It is likely that tadpoles stay at low current velocity sites to reduce the probability of being washed out to the sea by a sudden squall and that selection of warmer sites would accelerate development of tadpoles so as to escape the heterogeneous aquatic habitat sooner.  相似文献

Xenopus tropicalis offers the potential for genetic analysis in an amphibian. In order to take advantage of this potential, we have been inbreeding strains of frogs for future mutagenesis. While inbreeding a population of Nigerian frogs, we identified three mutations in the genetic background of this strain. These mutations are all recessive embryonic lethals. We show that multigenerational mutant analysis is feasible and demonstrate that mutations can be identified, propagated, and readily characterized using hybrid, dihybrid, and even trihybrid crosses. In addition, we are optimizing conditions to raise frogs rapidly and present our protocols for X. tropicalis husbandry. We find that males mature faster than females (currently 4 versus 6 months to sexual maturity). Here we document our progress in developing X. tropicalis as a genetic model organism and demonstrate the utility of the frog to study the genetics of early vertebrate development.  相似文献

Experimental ponds were used as a model system of habitat patches to study the effect of habitat size on the relative growth performance of tadpoles of Bufo americanus and Pseudacris triseriata, and on colonization by predatory insects. Three pond depths and surface areas were habitat size treatments in a replicated, factorial experiment. Tadpoles of both species were astablished together at a single density and ponds were left open to natural colonization by aquatic insects. Pond area had a significant effect on the multivariate response of P. triseriata larval period, survival, and metamorphic mass. P. triseriata survived better relative to B. americanus in larger ponds. However, increasing pond area led to greater incidence of predacious beetle larvae (Dytiscus, Coleoptera: Dytiscidae). Dytiscus larvae had a significant negative effect on the survival of P. triseriata and led to reduced P. triseriata survival relative to B. americanus in colonized ponds. The results suggest that habitat size can influence community structure by altering the distribution of predation among habitat patches.  相似文献

Acute toxicity and bioconcentration capacities of lindane and deltamethrin were studied in Rana temporaria tadpoles and in mosquitofish. These studies show that the toxicity of deltamethrin is about 100 to 1 000 times greater than that of lindane and bioconcentration factors are very different for these two insecticides. The bioconcentration factor of lindane, a stable chemical, low volatility, hydrophobic and a poorly metabolized molecule is considerable in either static or flow through contamination systems. For deltamethrin, an quickly metabolized molecule, this factor is weak or null. Moreover a comparison of various methods of contamination (static or flow through systems) showed that the experimental conditions of exposure to the insecticide strongly influence the concentration in the tested species.

Summary Freshwater snails and anuran tadpoles have been suggested to have their highest population densities in ponds of intermediate size where abiotic disturbance (e.g. desiccation) is low and large predators absent. Both snails and tadpoles feed on periphytic algae and, thus, there should be a large potential for competitive interactions to occur between these two distantly related taxa. In a field experiment we examined the relative strength of competition between two closely related snail species, Lymnaea stagnalis and L. peregra, and between L. stagnalis and tadpoles of the common frog, Rana temporaria. Snail growth and egg production and tadpole size at and time to metamorphosis were determined. Effects on the common food source, periphyton, were monitored with the aid of artificial substrates. Periphyton dry weight was dramatically reduced in the presence of snails and/or tadpoles. There were no competitive effects on growth or egg production of the two snail species when they were coexisting. Mortality of L. peregra was high (95%) after reproduction, but independent of treatment. Growth of L. stagnalis was reduced only at the highest tadpole densities, whereas egg production was reduced both by intraspecific competition and by competition with tadpoles. Differences in egg production were retained after tadpole metamorphosis. Tadpole larval period increased, weight of metamorphosing frogs decreased and growth rate was reduced as a function of increasing tadpole density. However, contrary to expectation, snails had a positive effect on tadpole larval period, weight and growth rate. Further, in experimental containers without snails there was a dense growth of the filamentous green alga Cladophora sp. We suggest that the facilitative effects of snails on tadpoles are due to an indirect mutualistic mechanism, involving competition between food sources of different quality (microalgae and Cladophora sp.) and tadpoles being competitively dominant over snails for the preferred food source (microalgae). In the presence of tadpoles snails will be forced to feed on low-quality Cladophora, increasing nutrient turnover rates, which results in enhanced productivity of microalgae, increasing tadpole food resources. Thus, tadpoles have a negative effect on snails through resource depression, while snails facilitate tadpole growth through an indirect enhancement of food availability.  相似文献

The introduction of non-native predators is thought to have important negative effects on native prey populations. The susceptibility of native prey to non-native or introduced predators may depend on their ability to respond appropriately to the presence of these non-native predators. We conducted a laboratory based behavioral experiment to examine the response of American toad (Bufo americanus) and bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) tadpoles to the presence of cues from the introduced mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), a potential tadpole predator. Neither the American toad tadpoles nor the bullfrog tadpoles responded behaviorally to the presence of mosquitofish cues. If tadpoles are unable to respond to the presence of mosquitofish cues appropriately, then their ability to avoid predation by mosquitofish may be compromised and this may contribute to the impacts of mosquitofish on some tadpole populations.  相似文献

An experiment has been made exposing eggs and tadpoles of the common frog (Rana temporaria) to electromagnetic radiation from several mobile (cell) phone antennae located at a distance of 140 meters. The experiment lasted two months, from the egg phase until an advanced phase of tadpole prior to metamorphosis. Measurements of electric field intensity (radiofrequencies and microwaves) in V/m obtained with three different devices were 1.8 to 3.5?V/m. In the exposed group (n?=?70), low coordination of movements, an asynchronous growth, resulting in both big and small tadpoles, and a high mortality (90%) was observed. Regarding the control group (n?=?70) under the same conditions but inside a Faraday cage, the coordination of movements was normal, the development was synchronous, and a mortality of 4.2% was obtained. These results indicate that radiation emitted by phone masts in a real situation may affect the development and may cause an increase in mortality of exposed tadpoles. This research may have huge implications for the natural world, which is now exposed to high microwave radiation levels from a multitude of phone masts.  相似文献

We investigated habitat variables influencing the species richness and composition of anuran tadpole assemblages in ponds from riparian areas of the Middle Paraná River. Tadpoles were collected at seven ponds that differed in hydroperiod and 10 habitat variables (water temperature, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, depth, size, time of isolation, macrophyte richness, and level of natural or anthropic disturbances) during a 5 year period. The presence/absence of potential tadpole predators was also recorded. Although we did not examine tadpole diets, we categorized anurans into ecomorphological guilds. We found that dissolved oxygen, maximum depth, pond size, macrophyte richness, and disturbances were significantly related to tadpole species richness. We also found that the richness of potential tadpole predator increased with longer pond hydroperiod. Thus, the number of tadpole species was higher in temporary and semi-permanent ponds without potential tadpole predators. The results of our study provide the first quantitative data on the tadpole assemblages in ponds associated with riparian areas of the Middle Paraná River Floodplain based on multi-year intensive sampling, a finding of both ecological interest and practical significance for future conservation management of anurans of Paraná River ecosystems.  相似文献
