OBJECTIVE: To relate the sizes of general practice catchment areas in one London borough to list size, deprivation payments, medical staffing, and locally and nationally recognised measures of quality. DESIGN: Study of general practice catchment area maps. SETTING: London borough of Lambeth. SUBJECTS: 60 out of the 71 general practices in Lambeth. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Practice catchment area size with corrections for numbers of doctors and patients. RESULTS: Catchment area size varied greatly between practices, showing an almost 150-fold difference between the largest and smallest practices. This size differential was even more marked when the size of the catchment area was corrected for the number of general practitioners in the practice, where a 300-fold difference was found. Substantial differences existed between practices in each of the four locally assigned quality bands. The weakest practices had catchment areas three times as large as those of the strongest practices. When corrected for medical staffing, the difference was eight times as great. A calculated measure of patient dispersion showed that the practice population of the strongest practices was four times as densely clustered as that of the weakest practices, whose patients were more widely geographically dispersed. CONCLUSIONS: Large variations exist in the size of catchment areas of inner city practices even when corrected for numbers of doctors and patients. The bacterial pathogen Listeria monocytogenes displays the remarkable ability to reorganize the actin cytoskeleton within host cells as a means for promoting cell-to-cell transfer of the pathogen, in a manner that evades humoral immunity. In a series of events commencing with the biosynthesis of the bacterial surface protein ActA, host cell actin and many actin-associated protein self-assemble to from rocket-tail structures that continually grow at sites proximal to the bacterium and depolymerize distally. Widespread interest in the underlying molecular mechanism of Listeria locomotion stems from the likelihood that the dynamic remodeling of the host cell actin cytoskeleton at the cell's leading edge involves mechanistically analogous interactions. Recent advances in our understanding of these fundamental cytoskeletal rearrangements have been achieved through a clearer recognition of the central role of oligo-proline sequence repeats present in ActA, and these findings provide a basis for inferring the role of analogous host cell proteins in the force-producing and position-securing steps in pseudopod and lamellipod formation at the peripheral membrane. 相似文献

During embryogenesis and maturation of an embryo the tissuescovering it produce phenolic compounds the localization of whichchanges during maturation of the embryo. Paleoethnobotanical studies in the Zapotitdn Valley of north-central El Salvador revealed that a species of grass,Trachypogon plumosus, was in common use as a thatch material at the Ceren site, a small mesoamerican farming community inundated by volcanic ash circaa.d. 590. Although the grass must have been common in Precolumbian times, repeated attempts to collect fresh specimens from the modern valley were unsuccessful. A survey of the major herbaria with collections from El Salvador likewise demonstrated a lack of modern specimens from the Zapotitdn Valley. The elimination of theT. plumosus from this area and its characteristic savanna habitat probably occurred as a result of the introduction of competing Old World grasses and excessive herbivory. The no-on-transient-A (nonA) gene of Drosophila melanogaster influences vision, courtship song, and viability. The nonA-encoded polypeptide is inferred to bind single-stranded nucleic acids. Although sequence-analysis of NONA implies that it belongs to a special interspecific family of this protein type, it does contain two classical RNA recognition motifs (RRM). Their behavioral significance was assayed by generating transgenic strains that were singly or multiply mutated within the relatively N-terminal motif (RRM1) or within RRM2. Neither class of mutation affected NONA binding to polytene chromosomes. The former mutations led to extremely low viability, accompanied by diminished adult longevities that were much worse than for a nonA-null mutant, implying that faulty interpolypeptide interactions might accompany the effects of the amino-acid substitutions within RRM1. All in vitro-mutated types caused optomotor blindness and an absence of transient spikes in the electroretinogram. Courtship analysis discriminated between the effects of the mutations: the RRM2-mutated type generated song pulses and trains that tended to be mildly mutant. These phenotypic abnormalities reinforce the notion that nonA''s ubiquitous expression has its most important consequences in the optic lobes, the thoracic ganglia, or both, depending in part on the nonA allele. 相似文献

Botanical evidence indicates thatM. gale is likely to thrive on well—aerated acid peatland and could become a valuable crop on land of low agricultural value. Cyclops kolensis Lill. forms dense populations in different water-bodies of the Upper Volga basin. In spring, when the other planktonic crustaceans have not yet appeared, C. kolensis is an important food object for fishes. Its active reproduction occurs from April to the beginning of June. A rapid accumulation of stage IV copepodids in the plankton occurs in June and at 12–14° they sink into the pelogene in a diapause stage. During the summer stagnation period the diapausing copepodids are distributed evenly over the bottom; their abundance here is 0.7–0.8 million ind. m-2 (Rybinsk reservoir). During storms and autumn active water mixing the copepodids together with detritus are disturbed and brought to the deepest, silt rich, part of the water-bodies. After the ice formation and at the beginning of bottom heating the diapausing copepodids are transported by near bottom currents and are concentrated in depressions; their biomass here reaches 60 g m-3. After the thermo-oxy-cline formation they revive and begin to live actively. Copepodids feed, accumulate adipose matter and in February–March they begin to moult. 相似文献
