The desert dampwood termite Paraneotermes simplicicornis harbors several species of obligately symbiotic protists that support its nutrition by fermenting lignocellulose. Among them are three morphotypes with the dexiotropic spiraling flagellar bands characteristic of Spirotrichonymphea (Parabasalia). The largest morphotype, characterized by an elongated cell apex with axial columella and internally positioned spiraling flagellar bands, was previously described as Spirotrichonympha polygyra. A smaller morphotype, with similarly internalized flagellar bands but a more rounded posterior without a protruding axostyle, was previously reported but not named. The smallest morphotype has surface flagellar bands and can attach to other protist cells by its apex. In this study, we combine light microscopy of live specimens and 18S rRNA gene sequencing of individually isolated cells to better understand the diversity of symbionts in P. simplicicornis. We found that S. polygyra branches distantly from true Spirotrichonympha, which are associated with Reticulitermes termites. Thus, we propose the new genus Cuppa to accommodate C. polygyra n. comb. (type species) and the similar but smaller morphotype Cuppa taenia n. sp. The undescribed smallest morphotype can be excluded from all previously described Spirotrichonymphea genera by molecular and behavioral evidence, so we propose Fraterculus simplicicornis n. gen., n. sp., to accommodate this organism.  相似文献

以《中国动物志·昆虫纲·第十七卷·等翅目》一书资料为基础,结合白蚁分类的最新成果,开发了基于web的等翅目昆虫分类系统。本系统由白蚁分类资料显示子系统、白蚁分类资料检索子系统、后台数据库在线管理子系统和白蚁种类鉴定子系统等4个功能模块组成。用户通过Internet网络,可实现白蚁分类资料的查询与未知种类的鉴定。本系统的开发,为我国白蚁种类的识别和相关信息的共享提供了快捷、高效的网络工具。这是计算机信息处理技术与白蚁形态分类学的有机结合,是利用计算机技术提高生物形态学研究、教学效率的一种新途径。  相似文献

Life at the oxic-anoxic interface: microbial activities and adaptations   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Molecular oxygen is one of the most important reactants in biogeochemical cycles. Due to its low solubility in water, the consumption of oxygen leads to the development of oxic-anoxic interfaces, which separate aerobic from anaerobic processes in virtually all environments, ranging in scale from oceanic sediments to the fecal pellets of a small soil invertebrate. Three case studies were selected to illustrate the basic situation and the specific characteristics of oxic-anoxic interfaces: sediments, the rhizosphere of aquatic plants, and the intestinal tract of insects. Each system is governed by the same general principles, but striking differences arise from, e.g., the nature of the major microbial activities and the mechanisms controlling metabolite fluxes. Also scale and dimensional differences as well as the consequences of temporal fluctuations are of fundamental importance. Recent developments in microbial ecology, which often combine traditional and modern approaches, have significantly furthered our understanding of the specific microniches and the metabolic and behavioral adaptations of microorganisms to life at the oxic-anoxic interface. New concepts help to define the targets of future studies: the spatial organization of microbial populations, their microenvironments and in situ activities, and the functional interactions within structured microbial communities.  相似文献

The transport of lipids constitutes a vital function in insects and requires the plasma lipoprotein lipophorin. In all insects examined to date, cuticular hydrocarbons are also transported through the hemolymph by lipophorin, and in social insects they play important roles not only in water proofing the cuticle but also in nestmate recognition. High-density lipophorin (HDLp), isolated from Reticulitermes flavipes plasma by KBr gradient ultracentrifugation, contains 66.2% protein and 33.8% lipids; hydrocarbons constitute its major neutral lipid (20.4% of total lipids). Anti-lipophorin serum was generated in rabbit and its specific association with lipophorin, and not with any other plasma proteins, was verified with Western blotting. Immunoprecipitation also confirmed that this antibody specifically recognizes lipophorin, because all hemolymph hydrocarbons of the termites R. flavipes and R. lucifugus and the cockroach Supella longipalpa, which associate only with lipophorin, were recovered in the immunoprecipitated protein. Cross-reactivity of the antiserum with lipophorin from related species was investigated by double immunodiffusion with 10 termite species in the genera Reticulitermes, Coptotermes, Zootermopsis, and Kalotermes, and with five cockroach species. Involvement of lipophorin in hydrocarbon transport was shown by injecting HDLp antiserum into Zootermopsis nevadensis and then monitoring the de novo biosynthesis of hydrocarbons and their transport to the cuticular surface; the antiserum significantly disrupted hydrocarbon transport. ELISA revealed a gradual increase in the lipophorin titer in successively larger R. flavipes workers, and differences among castes in lipophorin titers were highest between nymphs and first instar larvae.  相似文献

Summary. This work reports on the flagellate systematics and phylogeny, cytoskeleton, prokaryote–eukaryote cell junction organisation, and epibiotic bacteria identification. It confirms the pioneer 1964 study on Mixotricha paradoxa and supplies new information. Mixotricha paradoxa has a cresta structure specific to devescovinid parabasalid flagellates, a slightly modified recurrent flagellum, and an axostylar tube containing two lamina-shaped parabasal fibres. However, many parabasal profiles are distributed throughout the cell body. There is a conspicuous cortical microfibrillar network whose strands are related to cell junction structures subjacent to epibiotic bacteria. The supposed actin composition of this network could not be demonstrated with anti-actin antibodies or phalloidin labelling. Four types of epibiotic bacteria were described. Bacillus-shaped bacteria with a Gram-negative organisation are nested in alternate rows on most of the surface of the protozoon. They induce a striated calyxlike junction structure beneath the adhesion zone linked to the cortical microfibrillar network. Slender spirochetes are attached by one differentiated end to the plasma membrane of the protozoon, forming knobs on the cell surface. Two very similar long rod-shaped bacteria are also attached on the knobs of the plasma membrane. A large spirochete attributed to the genus Canaleparolina is also attached to the protozoon. The solution structure of termicin from hemocytes of the termite Pseudacanthotermes spiniger was determined by proton two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and molecular modeling techniques. Termicin is a cysteine-rich antifungal peptide also exhibiting a weak antibacterial activity. The global fold of termicin consists of an alpha-helical segment (Phe4-Gln14) and a two-stranded (Phe19-Asp25 and Gln28-Phe33) antiparallel beta-sheet forming a "cysteine stabilized alphabeta motif" (CSalphabeta) also found in antibacterial and antifungal defensins from insects and from plants. Interestingly, termicin shares more structural similarities with the antibacterial insect defensins and with MGD-1, a mussel defensin, than with the insect antifungal defensins such as drosomycin and heliomicin. These structural comparisons suggest that global fold alone does not explain the difference between antifungals and antibacterials. The antifungal properties of termicin may be related to its marked hydrophobicity and its amphipatic structure as compared to the antibacterial defensins. Composition of the essential oil of Lepidium meyenii (Walp)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The essential oil profile of maca (Lepidium meyenii) obtained from Lima, Peru, was examined. Steam distillates of the aerial parts of L. meyenii were continuously extracted with pentane and the pentane extracts analyzed by GC/MS. Retention indices and mass spectral data were used to identify 53 oil components. Phenyl acetonitrile (85.9%), benzaldehyde (3.1%), and 3-methoxyphenylacetonitrile (2.1%) were the major components of the steam distilled oil. The oil of L. meyenii was tested for phytotoxic, cyanobactericidal, and antitermite activity. The oil was selectively toxic towards the cyanobacterium Oscillatoria perornata compared to the green alga Selenastrum capricornutum, with complete growth inhibition at 100 microg/ml. Mortality of the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus, was numerically, but not significantly, higher when held on filter paper treated with maca oil. At 1% (w/w), maca oil also appeared to act as a feeding deterrent to termites. Several minor components of the essential oil of maca including 3-methoxyphenylacetonitrile and benzylthiocyanate were significantly active against the Formosan termite. This is the first report on the essential oil composition of L. meyenii.  相似文献

Colonies of the termite Nasutitermes corniger often contain multiple reproductive queens and kings. We used double-strand conformation polymorphism (DSCP) analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) to determine the probable origins of co-occurring reproductives. Colonies differed in queen and king number, in the number of nests containing reproductives, and in the genetic relationships among reproductives. Most of the 44 colonies contained a single pair of maternally unrelated reproductives. In the two single-nest colonies with a pair of queens, the two queens differed in mtDNA haplotype, suggesting nest-founding by unrelated queens. In the seven single-nest colonies with larger numbers of reproductives (11–49), all reproductives shared the same haplotype, a pattern consistent with replacement of a single pair by several offspring. As predicted by theory, the number of coexisting queens was greater for replacement reproductives than for co-foundresses. Several complex colonies contained multiple queens of two or more haplotypes distributed among several interconnected nests. This indicates that several matrilines can persist within a colony through one or more generations of budding and replacement, a hypothesis confirmed by orphaning experiments. The various modes of termite colony formation rival the diversity seen in ant species and demonstrate the remarkable convergence of behaviours between the two groups.  相似文献

This study examines factors affecting chimpanzees' preying on termites, especially their choice of prey species. Regular surveys of a large sample of termite-mounds in the Mahale Mountains, Tanzania, confirmed that chimpanzees of B Group obtainedMacrotermes, which were relatively uncommon, by the use of fishing-tools, but ignored the much more abundantOdontotermes. This preference appeared to reflectMacrotermes' more extended swarming period, greater accessibility, larger size, and less noxious taste than the soldiers ofOdontotermes. Similar factors probably underly the chimpanzees' choice ofMacrotermes at Gombe, butPseudacanthotermes spiniger are also common there, and their absence from the diet is less easily explained. In contrast, the chimpanzees of K Group at Mahale prey mainly onP. spiniger;Macrotermes are apparently absent, andP. spiniger appear to be more abundant, accessible, and palatable than the alternativeOdontotermes.  相似文献

Abstract: In several aspects termites are a fascinating group of insects having attracted the interest of many researchers. They exhibit a complex social behavior and caste differentiation occurring elsewhere only among the hymenoptera. In an enlarged part of the hindgut, the paunch, termites have established a unique symbiotic association with prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms. A similar flora is also found in wood-eating roaches of the genus Cryptocercus . The study of symbiosis between termites and their intestinal microbes is of general interest, because due to this symbiotic interaction termites can feed on complex biopolymers such as wood. Flagellates and bacteria occur in the gut of lower termites, while higher termites possess only bacteria. In particular spirochetes are abundant in the termite gut. Apart from spirochetes and other more common bacteria, actinomycetes, yeasts and fungi have also been isolated from different species of termites. This review summarizes the distinct role of the intestinal flora in degradation of wood components such as cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin.  相似文献
