Aim Despite the importance of the niche concept in ecological and evolutionary theory, there are still many discussions about its definition and operational evaluation, especially when dealing with niche divergence and conservatism in an explicit phylogenetic context. Here we evaluate patterns of niche evolution in 67 New World Carnivora species, measured using Hellinger distances based on MAXENT models of species distribution. We show how inferences on niche conservatism or divergence depend on the way phylogenetic patterns are analysed using matrix comparison techniques. Innovation Initially we used the simplest approach of Mantel tests to compare Hellinger distances ( N ) derived from MAXENT and phylogenetic distances ( P ) among species. Then we extended the Mantel test to generate a multivariate correlogram, in which phylogenetic patterns are analysed at multiple levels in the phylogeny and can reveal nonlinearity in the relationship between divergence and time. Finally, we proposed a new approach to generate ‘local’ (or ‘specific’) leverages of components for Mantel correlation, evaluating the non‐stationarity in the relationship between N and P for each species. This new approach was used to show if some lineages are more prone to niche shift or conservatism than others. Main conclusions Standard Mantel tests indicated a poor correspondence between N and P matrices, discarding the idea of niche conservatism for Carnivora, but the correlogram supports that closely related species tend to be more similar than expected by chance. Moreover, the variance among Hellinger distances between pairs of closely phylogenetically related species is much larger than for the entire clade. Phylogenetic non‐stationarity analysis shows that in some Carnivora families the niche tends to divergence (Mustelidae and Canidae), whereas in others it tends to conservatism (Procyonidae and Mustelidae) at short phylogenetic distances. Our analyses clearly show that misleading results may appear if niche divergence is analysed only by simple matrix correlations not taking into account complex patterns of phylogenetic nonlinearity and non‐stationarity.  相似文献

This study is prompted by the discovery of an incus of Hyaenodon, the first known auditory ossicle of this genus and thus of any hyaenodont mammal so far. A large set of incudes of recent Carnivora, including felids, hyaenids, viverrids, herpestids, nandiniid and canids of different ecosystems, was set up for morphological comparison. This study examines especially the incudo-mallear facet. Typically, the incudo-mallear facet is composed of: (1) three articular surfaces in felids, (2) a U-shaped surface in hyaenids and (3) four surfaces in canids. Both taxonomy (on family level) and habitat (open, closed or mixed habitat preference) might have an impact on the morphology of the incus facets, the former having a major impact in our sample. The Hyaenodon incus is small, delicate and possesses an incudo-mallear facet of a general saddle-shape with two articulation facets, a large superior articulation area and a circular, inferior articulation area. Herein, its general morphology and facet shape is most similar to the felid incus morphology.  相似文献

We analysed mandible shape of the orders Dasyuromorpha, Didelphimorphia, and Carnivora using two‐dimensional geometric morphometrics, in order to explore the relationship between shape, size, and phylogeny. We studied 541 specimens, covering most of the genera of the terrestrial Carnivora (115 species) and a wide sample of marsupials (36 species). The observed shape variation had an ecological component. As an example, omnivorous carnivores have thick mandibles and large talonids in the carnassials, while hypercarnivores possess short mandibles and reduced talonids. There is also a discrimination between different taxonomic groups (i.e. marsupials and Carnivora), indicating some kind of constraint. Size explains a large percentage of total variance (large species had shorter and stronger mandibles, with anteriorly displaced carnassials), was significant when phylogeny was taken into account with a comparative method, but not when size and shape were optimized on the phylogeny. Carnivora presents a larger disparity and variation in body size, which could be related to the difference in teeth replacement. The optimization of mandible shape on the phylogenetic tree indicates that functional aspects, such as diet, are a key factor in the evolution of the carnivore mandible, but also that there is a phylogenetic pattern that cannot be explained by differences in diet alone. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 164 , 836–855.  相似文献

Locomotor mode is an important component of an animal's ecology, relating to both habitat and substrate choice (e.g., arboreal versus terrestrial) and in the case of carnivores, to mode of predation (e.g., ambush versus pursuit). Here, we examine how the morphology of the calcaneum, the ‘heel bone’ in the tarsus, correlates with locomotion in extant carnivores. Other studies have confirmed the correlation of calcaneal morphology with locomotion behaviour and habitat. The robust nature of the calcaneum means that it is frequently preserved in the fossil record. Here, we employ linear measurements and 2D‐geometric morphometrics on a sample of calcanea from eighty‐seven extant carnivorans and demonstrate a signal of correlation between calcaneal morphology and locomotor mode that overrides phylogeny. We used this correlation to determine the locomotor mode, and hence aspects of the palaeobiology of, 47 extinct carnivorous mammal taxa, including both Carnivora and Creodonta. We found ursids (bears), clustered together, separate from the other carnivorans. Our results support greater locomotor diversity for nimravids (the extinct ‘false sabertooths’, usually considered to be more arboreal), than previously expected. However, there are limitations to interpretation of extinct taxa because their robust morphology is not fully captured in the range of modern carnivoran morphology.  相似文献

The Javan ferret-badger Melogale orientalis (Carnivora: Mustelidae: Helictidinae) is a small carnivore endemic to Indonesia. In the family Mustelidae, 10 Eimeria, 12 Cystoisopora, one Isospora, and one Hammondia species are known, but no eimeriid coccidia has been yet described in the subfamily Helictinidae (ferret badgers). Coproscopic examination of Javan ferret-badgers imported into the Czech Republic revealed the presence of coccidian oocysts. Sporulated oocysts differ from other Eimeria known in the family Mustelidae by their small size (12.4–16.1 × 10.4–13.4 μm) and ovoidal shape. Morphological data and phylogenetic analyses of 18S rRNA and COI genes indicated a new species of Eimeria found in faecal samples of Javan ferret badgers. The hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus is centrally involved in generation of several circadian rhythms. Neurons of the mammalian suprachiasmatic nucleus express a number of neuropeptides including vasopressin. The suprachiasmatic nucleus of the mink (Mustela vison) is easily distinguished from neighbouring hypothalamic areas and the underlying optic chiasm as a small nucleus containing densely packed parvocellular neurons. A dorsal and ventral subdivision were clearly recognized within the midportion and caudal part of the nuclcus. Using immunohistochemistry, we have identified vasopressin-, neurophysin-, and vasoactive intestinal peptide-immunoreactive neuronal elements in the hypothalamus of the mink. Vasoactive intestinal peptide-immunoreactive neurons can be observed in the ventral aspect of the suprachiasmatic nucleus, but to our surprise, no vasopressin immunoreactive perikarya are found within the suprachiasmatic nucleus, this absence being independent of the experienced annual cycle. The hypothalamic paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei contain large numbers of vasopressin-, neurophysin-and vasoactive intestinal peptide-immunoreactive magnocellular neurons with extensive projections towards the infundibulum and neurohypophysis. A comparative analysis of the distribution of vasopressin-immunoreactive elements in a number of conventional laboratory animals has demonstrated that, in contrast to the rat, golden hamster and Mongolian gerbil, neither vasopressin-containing perikarya in the suprachiasmatic nucleus nor fine calibered immunoreactive fibres entering the adjacent subparaventricular zone are present in the mink. The mink is a photodependent seasonal breeder, and thus vasopressin-immunoreactive neurons in the suprachiasmatic nuclei may not be essential for the photoperiodic regulation of reproduction and seasonal events experienced by this species.  相似文献

Kinkajou social groups generally consist of one adult female, two males, one subadult and one juvenile. Based on analysis of variation in 11 microsatellite loci, we assess the degree of kinship within and between four social groups totaling 25 kinkajous. We use exclusion and likelihood analyses to assign parents for seven of the eight offspring sampled, five with >/= 95% certainty, and two with >/= 80% certainty. Five of six identified sires of group offspring came from the same social group as the mother and pup. Adult males and females within a group were unrelated and subadults and juveniles were offspring of the group adults, suggesting a family structure. All five identified paternities within a social group were by the dominant male of the group. However, this copulation asymmetry does not necessarily reflect cooperation due to kinship ties between the two adult males within a group as one of two adult male pairs sampled was unrelated. Neighbouring male kinkajous were more closely related to each other than neighbouring female kinkajous, suggesting that females disperse more often or farther than males.  相似文献

The knowledge of the craniodental variability of South American canids is mainly anecdotal, and the variability and dental correlation of living canids have only been studied in several species of holarctic foxes ( Vulpes vulpes , Vulpes lagopus and Urocyon cinereoargeteus ) and Canis lupus . These studies have shown that the last molars, canines and incisors are the most variable and the central molars and premolars are the least variable, and that correlations are highest among the posterior premolars. This pattern has been accounted for by developmental factors, functional utility and tooth complexity. In this paper the pattern of dental correlation and variability of craniodental measurements in the South American fox Dusicyon gymnocercus is studied, with the aim of checking the extension of the pattern observed in other species and contrasting previous hypotheses. The most variable in D. gymnocercus measurements are some cranial widths, width of the incisors, lower canine and lower last molar, whereas others such as width of the braincase, length of the upper carnassials, and first and second lower and upper molars have lower variability. The premolar region is the most correlated, in terms of values and number of significant correlation coefficients. The results show that measurement error is negatively correlated with size of the variables, which could explain the bias found in this index as earlier authors have suggested, but the pattern captured by this index cannot be completely considered to be an artefact. The observed results confirm that the patterns of variability and correlation found in holarctic foxes are widespread in the family Canidae, and suggest the presence of an evolutionary constraint.  相似文献
