Abstract:  The vertebrate community of the late Miocene locality of Batallones-1, Madrid Province, Spain, is mainly composed of mammals of the order Carnivora, which represents 98 per cent of the total number of macro-mammal fossils. Here, we describe craniodental remains of approximately 12 individuals of a new, highly specialized member of the Amphicyonidae, previously assigned to Amphicyon sp. cf. A. castellanus . A phylogenetic analysis of Amphicyoninae shows that this new form, named Magericyon anceps gen. et sp. nov., is markedly distinct from all other known Amphicyoninae, specifically in its hypercarnivorous features (strongly compressed upper canines, absence of dP1/dp1 and P2/p2, single-rooted p3, absence of a metaconid on the lower molars, and reduction of M2 relative to M1).  相似文献

  1. Bobcats Lynx rufus and coyotes Canis latrans are two widespread mesopredators with a complex history of sympatry. The competitive interactions between these species are of interest to biologists due to the furbearer status of bobcats, the recent range expansion of coyotes, and the recolonisation of several parts of North America by bobcats following their extirpation. Although studies exploring the dynamics and competition between bobcats and coyotes span decades, there is a lack of understanding regarding what factors influence exploitative or interference competition, and what methodologies are conducive to identifying these types of competition.
  2. We gathered a comprehensive list of research papers (n = 41) exploring bobcat–coyote competitive interactions in North America. From them, we collected the following: study site characteristics, number and types of research methods, number and types of metrics explored, history of sympatry of the two species at the study location, presence of apex predators, and documentation of interference and/or exploitative competition.
  3. Using generalised linear models, we determined that interference competition between bobcats and coyotes was observed primarily in open habitat. However, habitat heterogeneity, the number of research methods and metrics used, presence of an apex predator, and history of sympatry could not be used to predict the occurrence of interference competition. Studies that included diet overlap were less likely to observe interference competition than studies that used other metrics to infer competition.
  4. Competitive interactions between coyotes and bobcats are largely a function of prey availability. Our findings suggest that habitat type may be a surrogate for prey availability, which many researchers mention, but do not explicitly measure. Future studies investigating bobcat–coyote interactions should include the quantification of prey densities to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the system at large, and should avoid using solely diet or habitat overlap as metrics to assess competition.

A model is presented of the jaw mechanism that relies on the geometrical similarities among mammalian carnivores with carnassial teeth. These similarities, together with estimates of the location of the resultant force of the jaw muscles, allow the model to predict that the mechanical advantage of the jaw lever system is the same in all carnivores with carnassials and, therefore, that the magnitude of the bite force is mainly determined by the absolute amount of jaw musculature.  相似文献

The secretion of chitinases has been examined in six species of Mammals belonging to the order Carnivora. Chitinases were found only in the extracts of the gastric mucosa of two species not adapted to a strictly meat diet [Canidae: dog and fox] while those with exclusive carnivorous habits, [Mustelidae: stoat, ferret, marten; and Felidae: cat, seem not to secrete the enzyme. These observations confirm the existence of a correlation between the ability of a given species to synthetize chitinases in digestive svstem and the feeding habits of the species.  相似文献

Extant procyonids only inhabit the Americas and are represented by six genera (Procyon, Nasua, Nasuella, Bassaricyon, Potos, and Bassariscus); all of them, except Bassariscus, are present in South America. The first records correspond to the early Miocene in North America (NA) and the late Miocene in South America (SA). Cyonasua was the first carnivoran to enter SA from NA, before the Great American Biotic Interchange, and went extinct in the early middle Pleistocene. This extinct procyonid is recorded in several localities of Argentina, and also in Venezuela. Paleobiological studies of procyonids are interesting from evolutionary and biogeographical viewpoints. In this study, the pectoral girdle and forelimb of 10 specimens of Cyonasua are described and compared with extant South American procyonids using a qualitative approach. Additionally, four functional morphology indexes were calculated for them and compared with an ecologically diverse sample of living carnivorans. Results indicate that Cyonasua most resembles Nasua nasua and Procyon cancrivorus, even though the extinct procyonid possessed peculiar features. Cyonasua had robust and relatively short forelimb bones, with strong stabilized joints, and movements associated with the sagittal plane, which suggest a tendency toward terrestrial habits, related to their ability to resist relatively high bending and shearing stresses. However, some features indicate a freedom in their range of movements, with moderate supination ability, compatible with climbing. When combined with previous analyses of dietary habits and estimated body mass, the morphology of Cyonasua would be well suited for digging and prey manipulation, allowing them to prey on small and relatively large-sized vertebrates, as well as to avoid some of the predators that were dominant in the Cenozoic of South America.  相似文献

Scent-stations are frequently used in North and South America to monitor carnivore populations, and their efficacy has been widely tested on various species. On the other hand, scent-stations have rarely been used to monitor European species and their efficacy has never been tested. Therefore, an acritical use on Eurasiatic species may lead to biased results, but also a neglection of this technique may limit methodological improvements. We evaluated scent-stations detection efficacy on three eurasiatic species: badger (Meles meles), fox (Vulpes vulpes) and beech marten (Martes foina) using data from a carnivore patch-use survey conducted in a fragmented landscape in the Province of Siena, central Italy. Scent-station survey data was compared with distribution data obtained from the utilisation of different techniques (track and camera trap surveys and interviews with local people) and an estimate of proportion of sites occupied inferred through the application of occupancy models. We show how by using scent-stations, fox distribution was largely underestimated, badger distribution was biased (this species was missed in small fragments) while beech marten (Martes foina) distribution was relatively unbiased. We conclude that application of this technique should follow a pilot study and cost/benefits should be carefully considered.  相似文献

Abstract

Ferrets at Pukepuke Lagoon were live-trapped during the periods November 1970 to August 1973 and January 1976 to July 1977. Although the sex ratio of the 75 trapped ferrets was equal, there was a strong bias towards male captures in the earlier period (58.4%) and towards female captures in the later period (68.7%). Habitat modification and changes in the trapping programme for the later period probably resulted in the increased abundance and capture rate of females. Between consecutive captures 58.2% of male movements exceeded 250 m, as against on1y 39.7% of female movements; the mean distance between consecutive captures was 435 m for males and 285 m for females. Mean monthly movements varied from 700 m in January to 315 m in June for males, and from 360 m in March to 150 m in September for females. Juveniles of both sexes moved similar, intermediate distances. Dispersing juveniles were trapped from January until April; males tended to appear in traps earlier in the year than females. Only 4 of 14 juvenile males setNed as residents, hut 15 of 28 juvenile females did so. Male and female home ranges overlapped extensively, but within each sex individual ranges were usually separate. Resident males maintained a well defined spacing pattern, adjusting their boundaries if a juvenile settled or a neighbouring range became vacant. In 1976 six females had overlapping ranges in an area of albundant food. Female ranges (12.4 ha) were on average smaller than male ranges (31.3 ha); home ranges of both sexes were smaller during the breeding season (August-February) than at other times.  相似文献

Aim To better understand the historical biogeography of the true seals, Phocidae, by combining nuclear DNA (nDNA) and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in a divergence time analysis using multiple fossil calibrations. Location Arctic, Antarctic, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, Lake Baikal, Caspian Sea. Methods Fifteen nuclear genes totalling 8935 bp plus near‐complete mitochondrial genome sequences were used in a Bayesian divergence time analysis, incorporating eight soft‐bound fossil calibrations across the phylogeny. All species of true seals were included, plus the walrus, three otariids and seven carnivore outgroups. The majority of the nuclear sequences and four phocid mitochondrial genomes (plus three non‐phocid mitochondrial genomes) were newly generated for this study using DNA extracted from tissue samples; other sequences were obtained from GenBank. Results Using multiple nuclear genes and multiple fossil calibrations resulted in most divergence time estimations within Phocidae being much more recent than predicted by other molecular studies incorporating only mtDNA and using a single calibration point. A new phylogenetic hypothesis was recovered for the Antarctic seals. Main conclusions Incorporating multiple nuclear genes and fossil calibrations had a profound effect on the estimated divergence times. Most estimated divergences within Phocinae (Arctic seals) correspond to Arctic oceanic events and all occur within the last 12 Myr, a time when the Arctic and Atlantic oceans were freely exchanging and perennial Arctic sea ice existed, indicating that the Arctic seals may have had a longer association with ice than previously thought. The Monachinae (‘southern’ seals) split from the Phocinae c. 15 Ma on the eastern US coast. Several early trans‐Atlantic dispersals possibly occurred, leaving no living descendants, as divergence estimates suggest that the Monachus (monk seal) species divergences occurred in the western Atlantic c. 6 Ma, with the Mediterranean monk seal ancestor dispersing afterwards. The tribes Lobodontini (Antarctic seals) and Miroungini (elephant seals) are also estimated to have diverged in the eastern Atlantic c. 7 Ma and a single Lobodontini dispersal to Antarctica occurred shortly afterwards. Many of the newly estimated dates are used to infer how extinct lineages/taxa are allied with their living relatives.  相似文献

Abstract: A new genus and species of basal non‐Viverravidae Carnivoramorpha, Dawsonicyon isami, is named and described. This new taxon is based upon DMNH 19585, an almost complete skeleton, which was collected from the Black’s Fork Member (informal ‘Bridger B’ subunit) of the Bridger Formation in southwestern Wyoming, USA. The specimen is incorporated into an existing craniodental data matrix, and the associated phylogenetic analyses support the identification of this species as a new basal carnivoramorphan. This new taxon is dentally compared to all known genera of non‐viverravid basal carnivoramorphans, as well as with all known species of the problematic genus Miacis. Postcrania are compared in detail with other described specimens of non‐viverravid basal carnivoramorphans and more generally with known postcrania of viverravids. Preliminary functional interpretations of a scansorial locomotor mode are offered for this new taxon. Its implications for the diversity of middle Eocene basal carnivoramorphans is briefly discussed, including expansion of the already high diversity in the Black’s Fork Member of the Bridger Formation (at least 11 species in 8 genera).  相似文献

The common notion that the septa in the carnivoran auditory bulla are formed by the growth of bone edges inwards the bullar cavity is a mistaken assumption based on the data of the late 19th century. Intrabullar partitions are in fact a result of the differential resorption of the bulla internal surface during the growth of the external surface. A septum develops at the boundary between local, relatively independent, ‘inflations’ of the bulla wall. This explanation, given by Van Kampen in 1905 for the case of the Canidae and some Mustelidae, can be applied to the whole order, including the aeluroid families with their ‘bilaminar’ septum bullae. Such an approach seems to solve the problem of homology of the intrabullar septa throughout the Carnivora, a question which has long been confused because of insufficient knowledge of septum morphogenesis. The partitions can really be considered as indicators of independent attempts to increase the size of a middle‐ear cavity among the infraorders. This conclusion follows immediately from the difference between major carnivoran taxa in the arrangement of separate inflations on the bulla wall, which can be considered as additional sinuses enlarging the hypotympanic space. It is precisely this difference that conditions the relative contribution of several bones (mainly of the ectotympanic and caudal entotympanic) to the intrabullar septa. Thus, the initial topographies of the above sinuses – whichever subsequent bone modelling of septa occurs – represent unique patterns useful in the higher‐level systematics of the Carnivora.  相似文献
