Most tests used to study fear in birds involve transferring them to a novel environment, which constitutes a bias in studies aiming at identifying the neural correlates of a specific fear-inducing situation. In order to investigate fear in birds with minimum interference by humans, behavioural and endocrine responses to the presentation of a novel object in the home cage were investigated in two lines of Japanese quail divergently selected for long or short duration of tonic immobility, a behavioural index of fear. Presentation of the novel object induced typical fear responses (avoidance of the object, increased pacing and increased plasma corticosterone levels) that were similar in the two lines of quail. Presentation of a novel object in the home cage thus appears to be a suitable stimulus to induce fear reactions in quail, with minimum interference from other motivational systems. The fact that quail of both lines reacted similarly in this test, while they are known to differ greatly in their behavioural responses to other fear-inducing tests, illustrates the multidimensional nature of fear. 相似文献

Agroecology and conservation must overlap to protect biodiversity and farmer livelihoods. Coffee agroecosystems with complex
shade canopies protect biodiversity. Yet, few have examined biodiversity in coffee agroecosystems in Asia relative to the
Americas and many question whether coffee agroecosystems can play a similar role for conservation. We examined vegetation,
ant and bird diversity, coffee yields and revenues, and harvest of alternative products in coffee farms and forests in SW
Sumatra, Indonesia near Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (BBS). BBS is among the last habitats for large mammals in Sumatra
and >15,000 families illegally cultivate coffee inside of BBS. As a basis for informing management recommendations, we compared
the conservation potential and economic outputs from farms inside and outside of BBS. Forests had higher canopy cover, canopy
depth, tree height, epiphyte loads, and more emergent trees than coffee farms. Coffee farms inside BBS had more epiphytes
and trees and fewer coffee plants than farms outside BBS. Tree, ant, and bird richness was significantly greater in forests
than in coffee farms, and richness did not differ in coffee farms inside and outside of BBS. Species similarity of forest
and coffee trees, ants, and birds was generally low (<50%). Surprisingly, farms inside the park were significantly older,
but farm size, coffee yields, and revenues from coffee did not depend on farm location. Farmers outside BBS received higher
prices for their coffee and also more often produced other crops in their coffee fields such that incentives could be created
to draw illegal farmers out of the park. We also discuss these results with reference to similar work in Chiapas, Mexico to
compare the relative contribution of coffee fields to conservation in the two continents, and discuss implications for working
with farmers in Sumatra towards conservation plans incorporating sustainable coffee production. 相似文献

This article explores factors that shape population structure in novel environments that have received scant theoretical attention: cities. Urban bird populations exhibit higher densities and lower diversity. Some work suggests this may result from lower predation pressure and more predictable and abundant resources. These factors may lead to populations with few winners and many losers regarding access to food, body condition, and reproductive success. We explore these hypotheses with an individual-energy-based competition model with two phenotypes of differing foraging ability. We show that low frequency resource fluctuations favor strong competitors and vice versa. We show that low predation skews equilibrium populations in favor of weak competitors and vice versa. Increasing the time between resource pulses can thus shift population structure from weak to strong competitor dominance. Given recent evidence for more constant resource input and lower predation in urban areas, the model helps understand observed urban bird population structure. 相似文献

Accurate identification of sex in birds is important for the management and conservation of avian wildlife in several ways, namely in the development of population, behavioral and ecological studies, as well as in the improvement of ex situ captive breeding programs. In general, nestlings, juveniles and adult birds of a wide number of sexually monomorphic species cannot be sexed based on phenotypic traits. The development of molecular methodologies for avian sexing overcame these difficulties, allowing a reliable gender differentiation for these species. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based methods have been widely applied in molecular sexing of birds, using a large diversity of sex-linked markers. During the last 15 yrs, there was a continuous improvement in the PCR-based protocols for bird sexing, increasing the accuracy, speed and high-throughput applicability of these techniques. The recent advances in real-time PCR platforms and whole genome analysis methods provided new resources for the detection and analysis of novel specific markers and protocols. This review presents a comparative guide of classical and recent advances in PCR-based methods for avian molecular sexing, highlighting its strengths and limitations. The red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa) is abundant in a number of regions in Spain and one of the most commonly hunted small game species in the country. Partridge hunting generates substantial income in rural areas where agriculture is less profitable. A traditional hunting method, reclamo hunting, is currently under revision by the European Commission's (EC) Birds Directive because hunting may fall within the reproduction period of the species. So far, only limited data on the reproductive phenology of the species exist to inform a policy change. In this study, we present reproduction data for red-legged partridges from 9 hunting estates in Andalusia during 1 year, and over 3 consecutive seasons from a control estate. We used direct nest and partridge chick covey observations to estimate 165 egg-laying dates. We found significant differences between sites related to altitude during reproduction periods. Using our pooled data, we showed that reproduction occurred between the last 10 days in January and the middle of February; beyond 31 January we observed an exponential increase in birds reproduction. Aims Biogeographical evidence suggests a strong link between climate and patterns of species diversity, and climate change is known to cause range shifts. However, there is little understanding of how shifts affect community composition and we lack empirical evidence of recent impacts of climate change on the diversity of vertebrates. Using a long‐term comprehensive dataset on bird abundance, we explore recent patterns of change in different components of species diversity and avian communities, and postulate a process to explain the observed changes in diversity and specialization. Location Britain. Methods We used Breeding Bird Survey data for Britain from 1994 to 2006 to calculate site‐specific diversity and community specialization indices. We modelled these indices using generalized additive models to examine the relationship between local climate and spatial and temporal trends in community metrics and the relationship between changes in diversity and specialization. Results Local temperature was positively associated with alpha diversity, which increased over the study period, supporting empirical and theoretical predictions of the effect of climate warming. Diversity increased in all habitats, but the rate of increase was greatest in upland areas. However, temperature was negatively associated with community specialization indices, which declined over the same period. Our modelling revealed a nonlinear relationship between community specialization and species diversity. Main conclusions Our models of diversity and specialization provide stark empirical evidence for a link between warming climate and community homogenization. Over a 13‐year period of warming temperatures, diversity indices increased while average community specialization decreased. We suggest that the observed diversity increases were most likely driven by range expansion of generalist species and that future warming is likely to increase homogenization of community structure. When assessed in combination, diversity and specialization measures provide a powerful index for monitoring the impacts of climate change. 相似文献

The South American Cerrado is the largest tropical savanna of the world, and one of the most threatened biomes on the Earth. Levels of bird endemism in this biome are controversial, but the most up-to-date study points to 30 endemic species. In this paper, I analysed the recent range shift by one of those species, the curl-crested jay Cyanocorax cristatellus , comparing it with three other alleged Cerrado endemics (lesser nothura Nothura minor , chestnut-capped foliage-gleaner Hylocryptus rectirostris , and grey-backed tachuri Polystictus superciliaris ) and a 'near-endemic' (white-banded tanager Neothraupis fasciata ). The curl-crested jay expanded its range considerably into south-eastern Brazil during the last century, colonizing extensive areas formerly covered by the Atlantic forest, which has been almost completely cleared by human activity. I found no evidence of recent range shift for the four other species studied, but demonstrated that the grey-backed tachuri is not a Cerrado endemic. I found that the vegetation map used by previous authors to classify birds as endemics is imprecise and out-of-date, not depicting well the biome limits, resulting in an arbitrary, sometimes erroneous, classification. I suggested the adoption of a more modern and detailed Cerrado map. The necessity of a comprehensive review in the list of Cerrado's endemic birds in light of modern vegetation maps is highlighted. 相似文献

The Atlantic Forest (AF) is one of the five most threatened and megadiverse world hotspots. It is arguably the most devastated
and highly threatened ecosystem on the planet. The vast scope of habitat loss and extreme fragmentation in the AF hotspots
has left intact very few extensive and continuous forested fragments. We compared bird assemblages between small (<100 ha)
and large (>6,000 ha) forest remnants, in one of the largest AF remnants in Argentina. We performed 84 point-counts of birds
in four large fragments (LF) and 67 points in 25 small fragments (SF). We recorded 4,527 bird individuals belonging to 173
species; 2,632 belonging to 153 species in LF and 1,897 in 124 species in SF. Small fragments suffered a significant loss
of bird richness, mainly forest dependent species, but the birds abundance did not decrease, due to an increase in abundance
of forest independent and semi-dependent bird species (edge and non forest species) that benefit from forest fragmentation.
The bird guilds of frugivores, undestory, terrestrial and midstory insectivores, nectarivores and raptors, and the endemic
species of AF were area sensitive, decreasing significantly in richness and abundance in the SF. Terrestrial granivores were
the only guild positively affected by forest fragmentation, containing mainly edge species, which forage in open areas or
borders including crops. Our first observations on fragmentation effects on bird assemblages in the southernmost Argentinean
Atlantic Forests did not validate the hypothesis on pre-adaptation to human disturbances in the bird communities of AF. On
the contrary, we observed that forest dependent, endemic and several sensitive bird guilds were strongly affected by fragmentation,
putting in evidence the vulnerability to the fragmentation process and the necessity to conserve large remnants to avoid reduction

Optic flow is a main source of information about self movement and the three-dimensional composition of the environment during locomotion. It is processed by the accessory optic system in all vertebrates. The optokinetic response is elicited by rotational optic flow, e.g. in a rotating drum lined with vertical stripes. We investigated here the effect of rotational optic flow on the optokinetic response in wild type and white zebra finches. The highest stimulus velocity eliciting an optokinetic response (upper velocity threshold) was dependent on stimulus direction and illumination level, but was not different between the colour morphs. The upper velocity threshold was higher with temporal to nasal movements in monocularly exposed birds and symmetrical with binocular exposure. Its increase with illumination level followed Fechner's law and reached a plateau at about 560 Lux. In bright daylight, white birds did not show optokinetic responses. We conclude that the altered wiring of the visual system of white birds has no influence on accessory optic system function. The unwillingness of white birds to respond with optokinetic response in bright daylight may be due to a substantial lack of inhibition within the visual system as demonstrated earlier, which may enhance the sensibility to glare. 相似文献

Mortality of vertebrates was monitored on a local road running across Poland’s Biebrza River Valley during 2 years (August
2005–July 2006). On the basis of distance from the river and surrounding habitats, the road (of total length 2,510 m) was
divided into three stretches. The road was monitored on foot by two people every month, over a few consecutive days. A total
of 1,892 road kills representing at least 47 species were found. Of these, 90.7% were amphibians, 4.2% mammals, 3.1% birds
and 2.0% reptiles. Most (70%) of the amphibians were anurans, with the common toad, common frog and moor frog among them together
accounting for 82% of the total. Mortality among amphibians differed between months, most anurans dying in May and August,
while a majority of Urodela are lost in October. The peaks in mortality were connected with the migration of adult amphibians in spring and juveniles
in summer and autumn. The number of amphibians killed was greatest on the (wettest) stretch adjacent to the river and decreased
with distance from it. Mortality among birds was highest in July—probably in association with the dispersal of young individuals.
Among recorded mammalian road kills, there was a prevalence of small rodents (mainly voles) and insectivores (mainly shrews).
Medium-sized mammals were found only accidentally. Mortality in general was conditioned by the number of anurans killed. 相似文献
