Dormancy-breaking treatment of the photosensitive Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seed by white light incubation or a 15-min exposure to red light decreased the abscisic acid content prior to radicle protrusion. Incubation in the dark or exposure to red light followed by a 5-min far-red light irradiation did not cause as great a decrease in abscisic acid content nor was the dormancy relieved. The ability of the far-red light to keep the ABA level high and to prevent germination gradually disappeared as the length of the dark period between the red and far-red treatments was increased to 24 h. The effects of Asahi SL (sodium ortho and para-nitro phenolate, sodium 5 nitro guaiacolate) sprays on China aster plant height,
seed yield and some metabolic events were investigated. The plants were sprayed with Asahi SL, in concentration of 0, 0.1,
0.2 or 0.4 %, three times before or during flowering, and six times before and during this stage. It was found that Asahi
SL applied three times during flowering brought about an increase in the seed yield, germination and metabolic activity and
did not modify vegetative growth of plants. The chemical used earlier, before flowering, had detrimental effect on seed yield
and quality, although it stimulated vegetative growth. The positive effect of Asahi SL was more prominent in weather conditions

In temperate rainforests on Chiloé Island in southern Chile (42°S), most canopy trees bear fleshy, avian‐dispersed propagules, whereas emergent tree species have dry, wind‐borne propagules. In the present study, the following hypothesis was tested: regardless of species, fleshy propagules are deposited in greater numbers in canopy gaps and in forest margins and hence have a more heterogeneous seed shadow than wind‐dispersed propagules. To test this hypothesis, the seed rains of these two types of propagules were compared in the following forest habitats: (i) tree‐fall gaps (edges and centre); (ii) forest margins with adjacent pastures; and (iii) under closed canopy (forest interior). Seed collectors (30‐cm diameter) were placed in two (15 and 100 ha) remnant forest patches (n = 60–100 seed collectors per patch) distributed in the four habitats. Seeds were retrieved monthly from each collector during two reproductive seasons (1996, 1997). In both years, the seed rain was numerically dominated by two species with dry propagules (Laureliopsis philippiana and Nothofagus nitida) and three species with fleshy fruits (Drimys winteri, Amomyrtus luma, and Amomyrtus meli). The seed shadows of the two species with dry, wind‐dispersed seeds differed markedly. Seeds of L. philippiana were deposited predominantly in canopy openings, whereas N. nitida seeds fell almost entirely in the forest interior. The fleshy‐fruited species, Drimys and Amomyrtus spp., had similar seed deposition patterns in the various habitats studied, but the between‐year differences in seed rain were greater in Drimys winteri than in Amomyrtus spp. Although no more than 10% of fleshy‐fruited propagules reached the margins of the patch, approximately 7% of these were carried there by birds. Every year, canopy gaps (pooling data from edges and centres) concentrated approximately 60% of the total seed rain of both propagule types in both forest patches. Forest margins received less than 20% of the total seed rain, which was largely dominated by fleshy‐fruited species. Hunting affects a considerably greater area of the tropical forest biome than deforestation and logging combined. Often even large remote protected areas are depleted of a substantial proportion of their vertebrate fauna. However, understanding of the long‐term ecological consequences of defaunation in tropical forests remains poor. Using tree census data from a large‐scale plot monitored over a 15‐year period since the approximate onset of intense hunting, we provide a comprehensive assessment of the immediate consequences of defaunation for a tropical tree community. Our data strongly suggest that over‐hunting has engendered pervasive changes in tree population spatial structure and dynamics, leading to a consistent decline in local tree diversity over time. However, we do not find any support for suggestions that over‐hunting reduces above‐ground biomass or biomass accumulation rate in this forest. To maintain critical ecosystem processes in tropical forests increased efforts are required to protect and restore wildlife populations. 相似文献

Jasmonates and related compounds were found to elicit the seed germination of the important root parasites, clover broomrape (Orobanche minor Smith) and witchweed [Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth]. Rice necrosis mosaic virus (RNMV), upon inoculation, induced higher growth and yield in Ludwigia perennis and Corchorus olitorius. Crops of commercial importance, including arhar, rice bean, cotton and tomato, were tested for growth promotion and higher productivity upon RNMV inoculation. Plant growth characteristics and biochemical components were measured from control, inoculated and energised plants. To understand the molecular basis behind such phenomenon, tomato plants were selected for subtractive hybridisation and reverse northern analysis due to its known gene sequences. Significant changes in biological properties and biochemical components in all the inoculated test plants over control were observed along with better seed quality. Over-expression of genes falling in different functional categories like photosynthesis, plant growth and development, and membrane transport explained the virus-induced growth promotion phenomenon as well as the temporary passage of this property through seeds of inoculated plants. 相似文献
