Background

Exclusive breastfeeding up to the completion of the sixth month of age is the national infant feeding recommendation for Sri Lanka. The objective of the present study was to collect data on exclusive breastfeeding up to six months and to describe the association between exclusive breastfeeding and selected socio-demographic factors.

Methods

A clinic based cross-sectional study was conducted in the Medical Officer of Health area, Beruwala, Sri Lanka in June 2006. Mothers with infants aged 4 to 12 months, attending the 19 child welfare clinics in the area were included in the study. Infants with specific feeding problems (cleft lip and palate and primary lactose intolerance) were excluded. Cluster sampling technique was used and consecutive infants fulfilling the inclusion criteria were enrolled. A total of 219 mothers participated in the study. The statistical tests used were survival analysis (Kaplan-Meier survival curves and Cox proportional Hazard model).

Results

All 219 mothers had initiated breastfeeding. The median duration of exclusive breastfeeding was four months (95% CI 3.75, 4.25). The rates of exclusive breastfeeding at 4 and 6 months were 61.6% (135/219) and 15.5% (24/155) respectively. Bivariate analysis showed that the Muslim ethnicity (p = 0.004), lower levels of parental education (p < 0.001) and being an unemployed mother (p = 0.021) were important associations of early cessation of exclusive breastfeeding. At the time of the study, 62% (135/219) of infants were receiving feeds via a bottle and 23% (51/219) were receiving infant formula. Muslim ethnicity was significantly associated with bottle and formula feeding (p < 0.001). Bottle feeding was also significantly higher among mothers with a low level of education and among employed mothers.

Conclusion

The rate of breastfeeding initiation and exclusive breastfeeding up to the fourth month is very high in Medical Officer of Health area, Beruwala, Sri Lanka. However exclusive breastfeeding up to six months is still low and the prevalence of inappropriate feeding practices is high.  相似文献

Prevalence of oral mucosal lesions in institutionalized elderly people in Mashhad, Northeast Iran Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of oral mucosal lesions in institutionalized elderly people in Mashhad, northeast of Iran. Background: This study was conducted to assess the prevalence of oral lesions in the institutionalized elderly. Methods: In this survey, we studied all of the nursing homes in Mashhad; a total of five encompassing 237 residents. The subjects were examined and lesions recorded in a designed checklist. T‐test, chi‐square and Fisher’s exact tests were used for the analysis. Results: The mean age of the patients was 79.59 ± 8.88. Ninety‐eight per cent of cases had at least one oral mucosal lesion. The most common lesions were fissured tongue (66.5%), atrophic glossitis (48.8%), sublingual varicosity (42%) and xerostomia (38%). There was no significant difference in the prevalence of denture‐related lesions (DRLs) between men and women (p > 0.05). Xerostomia was more prevalent in 70–79‐year‐old than in 60–69‐year‐old subjects. No case of oral malignant lesion was detected. Discussion: These findings revealed a higher prevalence of oral mucosal lesions in Mashhad city compared with other studies conducted in other major cities in Iran and abroad. The results emphasise the necessity of national programmes towards oral health promotion.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Complete submergence is an important stress factor for many terrestrial plants, and a limited number of species have evolved mechanisms to deal with these conditions. Rumex palustris is one such species and manages to outgrow the water, and thus restore contact with the atmosphere, through upward leaf growth (hyponasty) followed by strongly enhanced petiole elongation. These responses are initiated by the gaseous plant hormone ethylene, which accumulates inside plants due to physical entrapment. This study aimed to investigate the kinetics of ethylene-induced leaf hyponasty and petiole elongation.

Methods

Leaf hyponasty and petiole elongation was studied using a computerized digital camera set-up followed by image analyses. Linear variable displacement transducers were used for fine resolution monitoring and measurement of petiole growth rates.

Key Results

We show that submergence-induced hyponastic growth and petiole elongation in R. palustris can be mimicked by exposing plants to ethylene. The petiole elongation response to ethylene is shown to depend on the initial angle of the petiole. When petiole angles were artificially kept at 0°, rather than the natural angle of 35°, ethylene could not induce enhanced petiole elongation. This is very similar to submergence studies and confirms the idea that there are endogenous, angle-dependent signals that influence the petiole elongation response to ethylene.

Conclusions

Our data suggest that submergence and ethylene-induced hyponastic growth and enhanced petiole elongation responses in R. palustris are largely similar. However, there are some differences that may relate to the complexity of the submergence treatment as compared with an ethylene treatment.  相似文献

We have identified one osmotic stress- and abscisic acid-responsive member of the endochitinase (EC 3.2.1.14) gene family from leaves of drought-stressed Lycopersicon chilense plants, a natural inhabitant of extremely arid regions in South America. The 966-bp full-length cDNA (designated pcht28) encodes an acidic chitinase precursor with an amino-terminal signal peptide. The mature protein is predicted to have 229 amino acid residues with a relative molecular mass of 24 943 and pI value of 6.2. Sequence analysis revealed that pcht28 has a high degree of homology with class II chitinases (EC 3.2.1.14) from tomato and tobacco. Expression of the pcht28 protein in Escherichia coli verified that it is indeed a chitinase. Northern blot analysis indicated that this gene has evolved a different pattern of expression from that of other family members reported thus far. It is highly induced by both osmotic stress and the plant hormone abscisic acid. Southern blot analysis of genomic DNA suggested that the pcht28-related genes may form a small multigene family in this species. The efficiency of induction of the gene by drought stress, in leaves and stems, is significantly higher in L. chilense than in the cultivated tomato. It is speculated that, besides its general defensive function, the pcht28-encoded chitinase may play a particular role in plant development or in protecting plants from pathogen attack during water stress.  相似文献

Silk fibroin (SF), extracted from Bombyx mori, has unique physicochemical properties to achieve an efficient wound dressing. In this study, reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/ZnO NPs/silk fibroin nanocomposite was made, and an innovative nanofiber of SF/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/RGO/ZnO NPs was ready with the electrospinning technique and successfully characterized. The results of MIC and OD analyses were used to investigate the synthesized materials' antibacterial effects and displayed that the synthesized materials could inhibit growth against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria. However, both in vitro cytotoxicity (MTT) and scratch wound studies have shown that RGO/ZnO NPs and SF/PVA/RGO/ZnO NPs are not only non-toxic to NIH 3T3 fibroblasts, but also can cause cell viability, cell proliferation, and cell migration. Furthermore, improving the synthesized nanofiber's structural properties in the presence of RGO and ZnO NPs has been confirmed by performing tensile strength, contact angle, and biodegradation analyses. Also, in a cell attachment analysis, fibroblast cells had migrated and expanded well in the nanofibrous structures. Moreover, in vivo assay, SF/PVA/RGO/ZnO NPs nanofiber treated rats and has been shown significant healing activity and tissue regeneration compared with other treated groups. Therefore, this study suggests that SF/PVA/RGO/ZnO NPs nanofiber is a hopeful wound dressing for preventing bacteria growth and improving superficial wound repair.  相似文献

Downregulation of microRNA-590-3p (miR-590-3p) is a frequently occurring, nonphysiological event which is observed in several human cancers, especially breast cancer. However, the significance of miR-590-3p still remain unclear in the progression of this disease. This study explored the role of miR-590-3p in apoptosis of breast cancer cells. Gene expression of miR-590-3p, Sirtuin-1 (SIRT1), Bcl-2 associated X protein (BAX), and p21 was evaluated with real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and SIRT1 protein expression was assessed by Western blot analysis in breast cancer cell lines. Bioinformatics analysis and luciferase reporter assay were used to evaluate targeting of SIRT1 messenger RNA (mRNA) by miR-590-3p. Cells were transfected with miR-590-3p mimic and inhibitor and their effects on the expression and activity of SIRT1 were evaluated. The effects of miR-590-3p upregulation on the acetylation of p53 as well as cell viability and apoptosis were assessed by Western blot analysis, WST-1 assay, and flow cytometry, respectively. miR-590-3p expression was considerably downregulated in breast cancer cells which was accompanied by upregulation of SIRT1 expression. SIRT1 was recognized as a direct target for miR-590-3p in breast cancer cells and its protein expression and activity was dramatically inhibited by the miR-590-3p. In addition, there was an increase in p53 and its acetylated form that ultimately led to upregulation of BAX and p21 expression, suppression of cell survival, and considerable induction of apoptosis in breast cancer cells. These findings suggest that miR-590-3p exerts tumor-suppressing effects through targeting SIRT1 in breast cancer cells, which makes it a potential therapeutic target for developing more efficient treatments for breast cancer.  相似文献

Human Wharton’s jelly mesenchymal stem cells (hWJSCs) are multipotent stem cells that could be aggregated into 3D spherules. ITGA4 and ITGA5 genes encode α4 and α5 subunits of integrins, respectively. In this study, we analyzed expression levels of ITGA4 and ITGA5 gene mRNAs in undifferentiated and 3D spherules forming hWJSCs in order to determine their expression pattern for possible future treatment of cancer cells in a co-culture fashion. For the purpose of obtaining hWJSCs, umbilical cords were collected from patients with caesarian section at full term delivery. The cells were then characterized according to cell surface markers using flow cytometry. Furthermore pluripotency of the obtained cells was verified. Subsequently the cells were aggregated in 3D spherules using hanging drop cultures. Expression levels of ITGA4 and ITGA5 gene mRNAs were determined by RT-PCR and Real time PCR, both in the initial undifferentiated cells and those aggregated in the spherules. The obtained hWJSCs demonstrated pluripotency, differentiating to adipogenic and osteogenic cells. They also expressed mesenchymal stem cell surface markers. Following the aggregation of these cells and formation of 3D spherules, mRNA expression levels of both genes were significantly reduced (P?<?0.05) compared with the initial undifferentiated state. The results of this study demonstrated that aggregation of hWJSCs into spherules alters their expression of ITGA4 and ITGA5. We investigated the influence of vitamin D receptor (VDR) polymorphisms and vitamin D level on the blood pressure and the risk of preeclampsia. In a case-control study, 200 pregnant women, including 100 individuals with preeclampsia along with 100 healthy pregnant women, were studied for VDR FokI, TaqI, and BmsI polymorphisms and serum 25 (OH)-D level using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method and commercial kit, respectively. The mean level of 25 (OH)-D in preeclamptic patients was significantly lower (16.6 ± 4.2 ng/mL, P < 0.001) compared with controls (19.6 ± 3.8 ng/mL). Among all women, a significantly higher systolic blood pressure and before-pregnancy body mass index and also lower gestational age were observed in the presence of 25 (OH)-D level < 20 ng/mL compared with the 20 to 30 ng/mL. A significantly higher frequency of VDR FokI C allele in preeclamptic patients (83%) than controls (74%) was associated with a 1.72-fold increased risk of preeclampsia. In all the studied individuals, the systolic and diastolic blood pressures were significantly higher in the presence of the FokI CC genotype compared with the TC and TT+TC genotypes. Neither VDR Taq1 nor VDR BmsI was associated with the risk of preeclampsia. The haplotype FokI C, TaqI C and BmsI A (CCA) compared with haplotype CTG increased the risk of preeclampsia by 1.4-fold (P = 0.33). Our study suggests an association between VDR FokI polymorphism and an insufficient serum level of 25 (OH)-D with the risk of preeclampsia and also the influence of insufficient 25 (OH)-D level and VDR FokI polymorphism on maternal factors, including blood pressure.  相似文献
