We investigated the influence of channel migration and expansion on riparian plant species diversity along the lower Colorado River near the United States–Mexico border. Using repeat aerial photography in a GIS we identified and classed areas of low, moderate, and high disturbance frequency caused by channel expansion and migration. Replicate vegetation plots (12m×12m) were sampled in each of the three disturbance classes. One-way ANOVA was used to test for differences in species richness, species diversity (using the Shannon–Weiner Index) and overall percent ground cover of plants between the three disturbance classes. Regardless of disturbance class, plots were dominated by trees or shrubs, especially the non-native Tamarix ramosissima, as well as Pluchea sericea, Baccharis salicifolia and Salix goodingii. Clearly woody species constitute the great bulk of overall species richness, percent ground cover, and species diversity (H) in each disturbance group. No overall statistically significant differences were revealed among the disturbance groups for values of species richness, percent ground cover, or the Shannon–Wiener Index, though paired contrasts of means revealed that total percent ground cover on low disturbance plots was significantly higher than on moderately disturbed plots. Spatial and temporal variability in riparian diversity in the study area appears to hinge on factors other than disturbance frequency such as salt or drought stress. Alternately, our results could be interpreted as suggesting that in the presence of intensive flow regulation, disturbance plays a secondary role to ecological stresses, similar to that demonstrated by others. Intentional flood pulses are advocated as a restorative management strategy for improving plant productivity, management of exotic species (particularly T. ramosissima), and restoration of overall biodiversity.  相似文献

Abstract. This study examines the capacity of establishment of a rare aquatic macrophyte, Luronium natans, within plant communities and habitat types in which it does not occur spontaneously. The species, generally limited to disturbed or nutrient‐poor habitats, was transplanted into a series of sites situated along natural gradients of disturbance (flush‐floods and intermittent sediment exposure) and sediment nutrient‐richness. The transplanted colonies were given a competition‐free establishment period. Colony dynamics of Luronium as well as size structure of the recolonizing macrophyte communities were monitored over three growing seasons. At the end of this period, transplanted colonies still persisted in five out of 12 transplantation sites. Apparently successful integration into the community occurred at both ends of the nutrient gradient, in periodically disturbed habitats. At intermediate to high nutrient richness Luronium maintained one of the highest cover values within the recolonizing community. The study supports previous presumptions that long‐term persistence of Luronium depends on processes limiting community biomass through occurrence of disturbance. But it also reveals the existence of suitable, yet not occupied habitats in which the species can persist as successfully as species from the local species pool. This finding modulates the presumption that Luronium's rarity is mainly caused by a weak competitive ability in the established phase. It thus rises questions about the species’ performance at other stages of its life cycle and on its dispersability.  相似文献

Egeria najas Planch. is the dominant native submersed macrophyte of the Upper Paraná River in Brazil, while Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle has recently invaded this area. From January 2006 to December 2007, comprising two annual flood cycles, we conducted monthly surveys at two river stations and two lakes connected to the river within this stretch of the Paraná River, aiming to understand how the hydrological regime influences the distribution and abundance of these native and invasive Hydrocharitaceae species. Hydrilla did not develop in the lakes, possibly due to the elevated proportion of organic matter in the sediment (∼10% DW). However, the exotic species dominated the river sites apparently suppressing E. najas. In the lakes E. najas reached a maximum biomass of 628 ± 82 g DW m−2 but did not surpass 333 ± 83 g DW m−2 in the river, where H. verticillata peaked at 1415 ± 255 g DW m−2. Macrophyte biomass development was greatest during low-water periods, with transparent water and high temperatures. Floods probably affected submersed macrophytes (especially in 2007, when an extreme flood caused by an El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event occurred) via sediment movement and plant scouring (uprooting) effects, coupled with reduced water transparency. Macrophyte recovery started soon after the (less intense) 2006 flood but was delayed in 2007. In the river recovery started five months after the major flood, but in the lakes no significant plant regeneration was found even nine months after the disturbance. E. najas and H. verticillata started regeneration practically at the same time but H. verticillata had much higher rates of biomass increase.  相似文献

Much debate about assemblage organization in stream fish may stem from analysing the effects of both local and large-scale processes on assemblage attributes over whole geographic regions. This study addresses this issue, by examining the contribution of local habitat attributes and landscape context to fish assemblage variation across small Mediterranean drainages in southern Portugal. Fish abundance and species composition was estimated in 28 sites, across 10 drainages, in both a dry year (1999) and a wet year (2001), and related to two sets of variables reflecting habitat and landscape characteristics. Fish showed responses to both sets of variables with variance partitioning indicating that landscape context had important effects on species richness whereas habitat attributes were the primary determinants of local fish abundance. In general, high species richness was associated with larger drainage area and higher rainfall variability, whereas variation in species abundances mostly reflected the influence of width, depth, conductivity, current velocity, substrate size and emergent vegetation. The relative contributions of both landscape context and habitat attributes to species richness and abundance were generally lower in 1999 than in 2001, with much less diversified species–habitat relationships being found in the former dry year. These results point to the dynamic nature of assemblage organization, emphasizing the importance of innovative, multi-scale approaches in advancing our knowledge of fish assemblage structure in Mediterranean streams.  相似文献

An extension of the floodpulse concept (FPC) for lakes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
This paper delivers a conceptual framework for the ecological functioning and biodiversity patterns of lakes that is based on the floodpulse concept (FPC). The specific characteristics of rivers and lakes considering water-level fluctuations are compared, with respect to catchment linkages, temporal patterns, and hydraulic forces of flooding and drawdown. The influences of floodpulses on element cycles, biodiversity, and adaptations of lake biota are analyzed, and the importance of multi-annual flooding cycles is highlighted. The degree by which these water-level fluctuations influence lake ecosystems strongly depends on lake morphology, where shallow lakes or those with large shallow margins are the most sensitive. Although floodpulses play a major role for ecosystem services such as lake management and climate change mitigation schemes, this issue is only scarcely dealt with. Tenets of the extended FPC for lakes are formulated in order to overcome this problem.  相似文献
