The patterns of synchrony in the population fluctuations of six species of gall‐makers on oak (Hymenoptera, Cynipidae and Diptera, Cecidomyiidae) were analyzed over a small‐scale transect (8 km) and a large‐scale transect (500 km). Gall‐maker species differed in their degree of synchrony. At the small scale some species showed synchrony among local sites, whereas at the large scale, with one exception, population fluctuations of all species were largely independent. The patterns of synchrony differed between the two spatial scales. At the small scale a considerable degree of synchrony was found among sites for two species, Cynips divisa and Neuroterus quercusbaccarum, whereas at the large scale no synchrony was seen for these species. For one species, Macrodiplosis volvens, the fluctuations were asynchronous at both the small and large scales. At the large scale, synchrony among sites was found for one species: the fluctuations of Neuroterus anthracinus were largely synchronous at both scales (i.e. over several hundred kilometers). Distance‐dependent synchronies (i.e. decreasing synchrony with increasing distance) were found for only one species, Neuroterus anthracinus. In summary, the levels of synchrony in the population fluctuations of these insects differed among species and were scale‐dependent. Scaling up from the small scale to the large scale does not seem appropriate.

The phylogeny of the gall-midge subtribe Baldratiina (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) was reconstructed from molecular (partial sequence of the mitochondrial 12S rDNA), morphological and ecological data sets, using 16 representative species of most of the genera. The morphological and ecological data were combined in a single character matrix and analyzed separately from the molecular data, resulting in an eco-morphological cladogram and a molecular cladogram. Attributes of galls and host associations were superimposed on the molecular cladogram in order to detect possible trends in the evolution of these traits. The cladograms resulting from the two independent analyses were statistically incongruent, although both provide evidence for the monophyly of the genera Baldratia and Careopalpis and the paraphyly of the genera Stefaniola and Izeniola. The results suggest a minor impact of the morphological characters traditionally used in the classification of the Baldratiina, whereas ecological data had a major impact on the phylogenetic inference. Mapping of gall and host attributes on the molecular cladogram suggests that multi-chambered stem galls constitute the ancestral state in the subtribe, with several subsequent shifts to leaf galls. It is concluded that in contrast to other studied groups of gall insects, related baldratiine species induce different types of galls, attesting to speciation driven by gall-type shifts at least as often as host shifts.

1. The relationship between plant traits and the frequency of attack by a stem galling midge, Neolasioptera sp. (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), on Eremanthus erythropappus (Asteraceae) was studied. The morphological changes of the host after a galler attack and the potential effects of these changes on attacks by the next generation of gallers were analysed. The study was conducted in the Serra do Japi, São Paulo, south-eastern Brazil. 2. Galled branches were significantly longer, thicker, and had more leaves than ungalled branches. Accordingly, gall establishment was higher in the longer and more foliose branches. Hence, it is suggested that ovipositing females are maximizing their performance by selecting larger branches. 3. Galled branches were larger than ungalled branches of the same age. Two hypotheses, not necessarily exclusive, can explain this pattern: (1) the plant vigour hypothesis that the females are choosing the more vigorous, fast-growing branches, which still remain more vigorous after galling; or (2) the resource regulation hypothesis that galling increases branch growth rates, thus increasing resource quality for forthcoming conspecifics. 4. Co-occurrence frequencies of current and past generation galls showed that the likelihood of a branch being galled increased when it, or the branch from which it stemmed, had been galled before. The data indicated that this preference was conditioned by the number of previous attacks. Heavier attack intensities, such as one gall in the same branch and another in the branch from which it stemmed, decreased the probability of further galling. 5. The suggested links between herbivore attack and plant traits indicate that studies on host selection by phytophagous insects must take into account that herbivory itself may change the plant traits that are postulated to be selected by the insects.

More than 1300 mealybugs and their natural enemies were collected from six crops (apples, pears, nashi, citrus, persimmon and grapes) at 91 sites. Pseudococcus longispinus and P. calceolariae were the commonest species in all crops, except in pipfruit in Hawkes Bay, inhabited almost exclusively by P. affinis. These three species accounted for more than 99% of all mealybugs collected. Mealybugs were attacked by 14 species of natural enemy, only two of which had been deliberately introduced to New Zealand. Six species of Encyrtidae were reared. Anagyrus fusciventris was recorded from New Zealand for the first time. Parectromoides varipes was newly identified as a primary parasitoid of mealybugs, and males of this species and Gyranusoidea advena, previously unknown, were found. Both species, together with Tetracnemoidea sydneyensis, T. peregrina and T. brevicornis, and Coccophagus gurneyi (Aphelinidae) and two species of Ophelosia (Pteromalidae) were widespread throughout the surveyed regions. Common predators included Cryptolaemus montrouzieri (Col: Coccinellidae), Cryptoscenea australiensis (Neuroptera: Coniopterygidae) and Diadiplosis koebelei (Dipt: Cecidomyiidae). Hyperparasitoids were extremely rare. Five species of ants were recorded tending mealybugs, but none is known to be disruptive to mealybug natural enemies. The implications of these data for biological control of mealybug pests in horticultural crops is discussed, and it is concluded that Pseudaphycus maculipennis (Hym: Encyrtidae) should be introduced against P. affinis. No other importations are recommended. The activity of existing species should be encouraged in future integrated pest management (IPM) programmes, by, for example, distributing A. fusciventris around the country, and commercializing the mass rearing and release of C. montrouzieri.

Abstract. 1. Populations of creosote bush ( Larrea tridentata (DC) Coville), were studied in Arizona to determine whether associated gallformers (Cecidomyiidae: Asphondylia spp.) were more abundant on water-stressed or nonstressed plants. Gall densities were measured along a steep elevational gradient that extended from mesic, higher elevations to lower elevations in the desert; and in the Grand Canyon where severely water-stressed and relatively unstressed plants occurred adjacently. At the Grand Canyon site, the responses of creosote bush to water stress were also studied.
2. The number and densities of Asphondylia species increased both at lower elevations and locally on water-stressed plants in the Grand Canyon, indicating that climatic and local conditions influence gallformer abundance in the same way.
3. Five of the eight Asphondylia species studied at the Grand Canyon site were more abundant on stressed plants, two species were more abundant on nonstressed plants and one species showed no preference for either plant type.
4. Densities of most species on stressed plants were positively correlated with the number of meristematic terminals per branch, which were more numerous on stressed plants, due to a bushier architecture. Flower gallformers were more abundant on nonstressed plants, which produced more flowers. Gall densities did not correlate with chemistry measurements, although these parameters also varied with level of stress.
5. These results suggest that gallforming species respond variably to plant stress, even within a closely-related lineage, and that there are effects of stress on plants, including architectural changes, that may be more important to herbivores than biochemical effects emphasized by White (1984) and others.

The oviposition behaviour of the brassica pod midge, Dasineura brassicae Winn. (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), on a preferred host, Brassica napus L. (summer oilseed rape) was compared to that on a nonpreferred, less suitable host for larval growth, Brassica juncea (L.) Coss & Czern (brown mustard). The experiments were done under field conditions with wild females. The number of landing females was significantly higher on B. napus than on B. juncea, indicating host differences in olfactory and/or visual stimuli. After landing, the behaviour differed in that females stayed longer and laid more egg batches on B. napus than on B. juncea plants. The probability that oviposition would occur after landing and the potentially adjustable egg batch size were similar on the high- and the low-quality host.A larger egg load on B. napus than on B. juncea can thus be attributed mainly to a higher landing rate and more repeated ovipositions occurring on B. napus.

Abstract.  1. Recent research has addressed the function of herbivore-induced plant volatiles in attracting natural enemies of feeding herbivores. While many types of insect herbivory appear to elicit volatile responses, those triggered by gall insects have received little attention. Previous work indicates that at least one gall insect species induces changes in host-plant volatiles, but no other studies appear to have addressed whether gall insects trigger plant indirect defences.
2. The volatile responses of wheat to feeding by larvae of the Hessian fly Mayetiola destructor (Say) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) were studied to further explore indirect responses of plants to feeding by gall insects. This specialist gall midge species did not elicit a detectable volatile response from wheat plants, whereas a generalist caterpillar triggered volatile release. Moreover, Hessian fly feeding altered volatile responses to subsequent caterpillar herbivory.
3. These results suggest that Hessian fly larvae exert a degree of control over the defensive responses of their host plants and offer insight into plant-gall insect interactions. Also, the failure of Hessian fly larvae to elicit an indirect defensive response from their host plants may help explain why natural enemies, which often rely on induced volatile cues, fail to inflict significant mortality on M. destructor populations in the field.
