The role of vision in the host plant-finding behaviour of the Hessian fly   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract. After mating, female Hessian flies, Mayetiola destructor (Say), sit for several hours before taking flight and exhibiting host-finding behaviours. Observation of these behaviours indicated that females used both chemical and visual cues to find oviposition sites, and that visual cues from plants consisted of both spectral (colour) and spatial information. Females oriented to and were stimulated to land on targets reflecting wavelengths in the region of 530-560nm (either alone or in combination with UV) but were inhibited by wavelengths from 400 to 500 nm. This spectral discrimination was probably mediated by photoreceptors located in the medio-frontal zone of the compound eyes. The spatial patterning of targets also influenced orientation during flight; targets with vertical rather than horizontal contour lengths and a higher density of vertical contour lengths were approached and landed on more frequently.  相似文献

The swede midge, Contarinia nasturtii (Kieffer) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), is a pest of cruciferous crops (Brassicaceae) in Europe and North America with high potential for economic impact. Effective timing of insecticide applications for swede midge control is difficult, in part due to a short adult lifespan. Predictive models are often used in integrated pest management programmes to facilitate the timing of control strategies. A European model, Contapré, for predicting adult swede midge emergence was shown to be inaccurate under Ontario field conditions. A new predictive model, MidgEmerge, was developed using DYMEX™ modelling software. MidgEmerge accurately predicts swede midge emergence in both Ontario and Québec. Observed emergence patterns cannot be explained without the presence of multiple emergence phenotypes. MidgEmerge indicates that there are two emergence phenotypes of the swede midge, each completing four generations per year in southern Ontario. A fifth generation of each may become possible with climate change. Evidence of a possible third emergence phenotype is presented. MidgEmerge has the potential to be an important predictive tool to inform and direct integrated pest management practices targeted against swede midge in North America.  相似文献

  • Intralaminar galls of Meunieriella result from ground tissue proliferation in leaves of Avicennia schaueriana, a typical halophytic mangrove. We tested if the preferred sites of gall induction were the midribs and secondary veins (SV) at the basal leaf portion, where the galls were expected to be largest; and if the vascular system in galls and adjacent regions was altered to favour water supply in galls, thus increasing their growth.
  • Gall induction sites and gall sizes were quantified according to leaf portions and regions. Anatomical and histometric analyses in vascular and ground tissues of galls and adjacent regions were compared to equivalent regions of non-galled leaves.
  • The galls were largest at basal sites on leaves, the midrib and SV. More galls occurred on the apical portion of the leaf, and on the leaf blade and secondary vein regions. Changes in shape and vascular system area, number and diameter of vessel elements were detected in both galls and adjacent regions. Fewer and smaller-sized vessel elements were observed in regions proximal to the galls and inside them.
  • Gall size is not related with preferred induction sites, which could be explained by factors such as thermal balance. Alterations in the vascular system indicate reduced hydraulic conductivity in the xylem in the proximal region and inside galls, leading to water leakage to gall parenchyma cells. This compensatory mechanism explains the expansion and proliferation of water storage and spongy parenchyma cells in the galls, explaining the higher growth in more vascularized regions.

Gall midges are insects specialized in maneuvering plant growth, metabolic and defense pathways for their benefit. The Asian rice gall midge and rice share such an intimate relationship that there is a constant battle for survival by either partner. Diverse responses by the rice host against the midge include necrotic hypersensitive resistance reaction, non-hypersensitive resistance reaction and gall-forming compatible interaction. Genetic studies have revealed that major R (resistance) genes confer resistance to gall midge in rice. Eleven gall midge R genes have been characterized so far in different rice varieties in India. In addition, no single R gene confers resistance against all the seven biotypes of the Asian rice gall midge, and none of the biotypes is virulent against all the resistance genes. Further, the interaction of the plant resistance gene with the insect avirulence gene is on a gene-for-gene basis. Our recent investigations involving suppressive subtraction hybridization cDNA libraries, microarray analyses, gene expression assays and metabolic profiling have revealed several molecular mechanisms, metabolite markers and pathways that are induced, down-regulated or altered in the rice host during incompatible or compatible interactions with the pest. This is also true for some of the pathways studied in the gall midge. Next generation sequencing technology, gene expression studies and conventional screening of gall midge cDNA libraries highlighted molecular approaches adopted by the insect to feed, survive and reproduce. This constant struggle by the midge to overcome the host defenses and the host to resist the pest has provided us with an opportunity to observe this battle for survival at the molecular level.  相似文献

1. Oviposition preferences of herbivorous insects are predicted to match offspring performance on different host taxa or on conspecific host genotypes. In gall‐inducing insects, host‐plant properties such as growth rate and gall size, which are determined by plant genotype and growing conditions, may have a significant impact on offspring performance and, hence, should influence oviposition site selection. 2. The present study investigated host preference of the European rosette willow gall midge Rabdophaga rosaria (Loew) in relation to offspring success on seven clones of Salix myrsinifolia Salisb. and two naturally hybridised S. myrsinifolia × phylicifolia L. clones growing in a replicated design in an experimental field under two fertilisation regimes. For each clone, the average growth rate, number of shoot tips, and leaf and gall size were determined, and their effects on midge preference and larval survival were examined. 3. Main shoot height, number of shoot tips, and gall size were significantly affected by clone. The midges clearly preferred certain clones over the others, but preferences were not related to willow growth traits or to gall size. Survival probability was higher in large than in small galls, but females did not prefer large‐leaved clones that produced the biggest rosette galls. Midge oviposition was also uncorrelated with prior rates of leaf‐rust infection and with feeding preferences of voles and folivorous insects. 4. The weak preference–performance relationship of R. rosaria within S. myrsinifolia is probably explained by evolutionary constraints that prevent generalist insects from achieving an ability to discriminate among conspecific hosts of variable quality.  相似文献

Plants are mosaics of resource quality to insect herbivores. Some leaves are superior to others, resulting in variable insect performance. Certain Salix viminalis L. (Salicaceae) genotypes show an unusually strong resistance to the gall midge Dasineura marginemtorquens Bremi (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae). A few leaves are frequently galled on such resistant willows, whereas on the great majority of leaves all larvae die before any galls are formed. We performed a series of greenhouse and field experiments in order to understand in more detail the observed intraplant heterogeneity. First, we tested whether random events (biotic or abiotic) can induce a susceptibility that is expressed later (next season), i.e., delayed induced susceptibility. Second, we performed a combined field and greenhouse experiment to test the possibility that susceptibility was induced by abiotic factors at the time of gall induction (within days), i.e., rapid induced susceptibility. We found support for rapid induced susceptibility, but not for delayed induced susceptibility. Although resistance remained strong, significantly more leaves with surviving larvae and galls were found on potted plants moved to the field compared with identical plants that remained in the greenhouse. Potted field plants were exposed to field conditions during a very short period in connection with gall initiation. Thus, we can exclude soil moisture, nutrient availability, and the history of the plant as factors explaining the induction of susceptibility. We tentatively suggest that radiation interferes with the expression of resistance. Our findings suggest that plasticity in plant resistance may be linked to ambient light conditions, and that heterogeneity in leaf suitability can be of ecological significance in plants that are considered resistant.  相似文献
