The effects of eight commonly used fungicides: propamocarb, fenarimol, triadimefon, procimidone, azoxystrobin, carbendazim, cooper oxychloride and Trichoderma harzianum on germination, mycelial growth and virulence of Isaria fumosorosea (Wize) Brown & Smith (Ascomycota: Hypocreales) was studied. The greatest effect on germination was observed by azoxystrobin, followed by carbendazim, triadimefon and procimidone. Propamocarb, fenarimol, cooper oxychloride and T. harzianum did not affect conidial germination with germinations of 95, 93, 79 and 84%, respectively. Virulence was evaluated against early fourth instar nymphs of Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae). The mix containing fungal conidial suspensions plus cooper oxychloride or fenarimol presented a significant reduction in the mortality in comparison with spore suspension itself. This study suggests that the most appropriate fungicides for use in Integrated Pest Management Programs against T. vaporariorum in combination with I. fumosorosea are propamocarb and T. harzianum.

Sublethal effects were evaluated in subsequent generations of whiteflies Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) arising from parental generations exposed in the four nymphal stages to the fungus Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin. Examples of such effects include impaired fertility, production of malformations or external variations, and reduced survival of later generations. Malformations of the head, legs, wings or abdomen were not observed in adults derived from treated nymphs, nor were negative effects observed in the fecundity and fertility of the descendants of the whiteflies treated with the fungus. However, moulting problems were observed in insects descended from B. bassiana-treated whiteflies. This is the first time that such effects have been reported, with almost 30% of imagos resulting from treated nymphs unable to detach completely from the exuvia. A gradual reduction in mortality rates between subsequent generations was observed. The importance of these results is discussed in the light of findings from other studies into the effects of entomopathogenic fungi on pest insects.

1. Experiments with adult females of the whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, demonstrated that when mixtures of host plants were present, performance was reduced relative to that on the best of the host plants when presented alone. 2. Behavioural observations indicated that in the presence of a variety of plants, individuals moved more, switched between plants more frequently, and stayed feeding in one place for shorter periods of time, compared with the situation when single plant species were available. 3. The data are interpreted as a constraint on attentiveness in the presence of complex, mixed-sensory stimuli.

The identification of whitefly species in adult stage is problematic. Morphological differentiation of pupae is one of the better methods for determining identity of species, but it may vary depending on the host plant on which they develop which can lead to misidentifications and erroneous naming of new species. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) fragment amplified from the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene is often used for mitochondrial haplotype identification that can be associated with specific species. Our objective was to compare morphometric traits against DNA barcode sequences to develop and implement a diagnostic molecular kit based on a RFLP‐PCR method using the COI gene for the rapid identification of whiteflies. This study will allow for the rapid diagnosis of the diverse community of whiteflies attacking plants of economic interest in Colombia. It also provides access to the COI sequence that can be used to develop predator conservation techniques by establishing which predators have a trophic linkage with the focal whitefly pest species.

Wolbachia is the most prevalent symbiont described in arthropods to date. Wolbachia can manipulate host reproduction, provide nutrition to insect hosts and protect insect hosts from pathogenic viruses. So far, 13 supergroups of Wolbachia have been identified. The whitefly Bemisia tabaci is a complex containing more than 28 morphologically indistinguishable cryptic species. Some cryptic species of this complex are invasive. In this study, we report a comprehensive survey of Wolbachia in B. tabaci and its relative B. afer from 1658 insects representing 54 populations across 13 provinces of China and one state of Australia. Based on the results of PCR or sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene, the overall rates of Wolbachia infection were 79.6% and 0.96% in the indigenous and invasive Bemisia whiteflies, respectively. We detected a new Wolbachia supergroup by sequencing five molecular marker genes including 16S rRNA, groEL, gltA, hcpA, and fbpA genes. Data showed that many protein‐coding genes have limitations in detecting and classifying newly identified Wolbachia supergroups and thus raise a challenge to the known Wolbachia MLST standard analysis system. Besides, the other Wolbachia strains detected from whiteflies were clustered into supergroup B. Phylogenetic trees of whitefly mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I and Wolbachia multiple sequencing typing genes were not congruent. In addition, Wolbachia was also detected outside the special bacteriocytes in two cryptic species by fluorescence in situ hybridization, indicating the horizontal transmission of Wolbachia. Our results indicate that members of Wolbachia are far from well explored.

Abstract. The free-flight behaviour of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae), the sweet potato whitefly, was investigated in a vertical flight chamber. A mercury-vapour lamp presented from above induced a phototactic flight response. Although flight propensity was comparable from 06.00 to 19.00 hours, flight duration was maximum between 06.00 and 10.00 hours. Males flew longer than females and their mean flight duration remained constant throughout the day. Females flew longer from 06.00 to 13.00 hours than from 13.00 to 19.00 hours. Both sexes were capable of sustaining flight for more than 2h, although less than 5% of those tested did so.
Flight activity also was influenced by age and by host quality. The propensity to take off, proportion exhibiting phototactic orientation and flight duration varied with the age of the whitefly. Host quality influenced the timing of flight behaviour. Whiteflies reared on senescing plants exhibited greater take-off rates and initiated longer phototactic flights up to 4 days following adult eclosion when compared to individuals reared on vegetative plants. Thereafter, individuals reared on vegetative plants exhibited greater response levels. Whiteflies reared on vegetative plants weighed more and survived longer than did individuals reared on senescing plants.
Whiteflies that responded to the overhead light initially exhibited a strong photokinetic and phototactic response. Over the course of the flight, these responses declined and flight instability increased, as indicated by an overall decrease in the mean rate of climb, accompanied by an increase in the variability of this parameter and an increase in horizontal displacement. Although males and females displayed similar flight characteristics, females exhibited a greater rate of climb than did males, and for both sexes, individuals that flew longer than 25 min had a greater rate of climb than did individuals that flew for less than 25 min.

Males from thelytokous females of Italian uniparentalpopulations of Encarsia meritoria and Encarsiaprotransvena were obtained by feeding wasps with tetracycline orrearing parasitoids at high temperatures respectively. Two thermictreatments were tested on E. protransvena: 31°C constanttemperature versus an alternation of 12 hours at 33°C and 23°Con a daily basis. Females of E. meritoria fed with tetracyclineproduced 80.87% of male progeny. Tetracycline did not induce maleoffspring in E. protransvena. For this species hightemperatures were required even though only a few males were obtained(0.31–5.43%). These results confirm the infection ofparthenogenesis-inducing micro-organisms in E. meritoria, whilethis is doubtful in E. protransvena. Males derived fromthelytokous populations of the two species were described. Males of theuniparental population of E. meritoria were similar to those ofbiparental ones, suggesting that the two populations are conspecific.Males of E. protransvena are slightly different from thosedescribed previously, supporting the hypothesis that E.protransvena is a complex of cryptic species. Our results suggestthe possibility of using ``induced males' by either antibiotics or hightemperatures as a taxonomic tool in the genus Encarsia toseparate similar (if not undistinguishable) uniparentalspecies.

Abstract. The reproductive physiology of sweet potato whiteflies, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae), was examined after their dispersal from cotton fields. Of particular interest was the synthesis of vitellogenins and the production of mature eggs. Whiteflies that dispersed out of fields, and were flying at ≈ 0.1 m above the soil surface, exhibited a reproductive physiology that was not significantly different from whiteflies that remained in cotton fields. However, B. tabaci caught at 2.1 m above the ground matured eggs at a significantly lower rate. It appears these latter whiteflies exhibit a physiology that indicates a reallocation of nutrient and energy resources in support of movement.

The ability of two species of aphelinid parasitoids to find and attack Bemisia argentifolii was determined. Experiments were conducted with whitefly patches on single leaf poinsettia plants randomly distributed in canopies of four commercially grown poinsettia crops at an early and late stage of plant growth. Eretmocerus eremicus found experimental patches in canopies of small and large plants more quickly and frequently, and killed more nymphs following patch discovery than Encarsia formosa (Beltsville strain). E. eremicus exhibited a Type I functional response in small and large canopies while E. formosa (Beltsville strain) showed a Type II functional response in small canopies and a weak linear response in large canopies. In greenhouses treated with E. eremicus, canopy size increased 4.6× and nymphs per plant increased 14.2× between small and large canopy experiments. Consequently, area of search for this parasitoid increased 83%, number of wasps counted on patches decreased 74%, and proportion of nymphs killed in artificial patches decreased 47% between small and large canopies. In greenhouses treated with E. formosa Beltsville strain, canopy size increased 7.3× and nymphs per plant increased 25.4× between small and large canopy experiments. Consequently for E. formosa Beltsville strain, area of search increased 11%, number of wasps counted on patches decreased 86%, and proportion of nymphs killed in artificial patches decreased 47% between small and large canopies.

The effects of cassava varietal mixtures on the population dynamics of the whiteflies Aleurotrachelus socialis Bondar and Trialeurodes variabilis (Quaintance) were investigated under outbreak conditions in Colombia. A regional variety of cassava (MCOL 2257) was grown in pure stand and mixed with a variety, CMC 40, believed to have partial resistance to T. variabilis. The dominant species in the systems, A. socialis, showed no varietal preference and population levels on the regional cultivar were similar between treatments. Of the two cultivars, CMC 40 was less preferred by T. variabilis and its presence in mixed variety plots lowered populations on the regional cassava. Yield losses, primarily due to A. socialis, were equal for regional cassava mixed with CMC 40 and in pure stand. Nevertheless, the use of CMC 40 in varietal mixtures provides a potential strategy for lowering herbivore load and increasing yields in zones with heavy T. variabilis attack.
