Laboratory bioassays were conducted to determine host plant effect on pathogenicity of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuill. (Ascomycota: Hypocreales) to the sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae). Fourth instar B. tabaci reared on cucumber, tomato, melon, green pepper, potato, eggplant, marrow, cabbage, bean or cotton, were treated with 1 × 107 conidia/ml B. bassiana EABb 93/14-Tp isolate. Mortality caused by B. bassiana significantly increased with time and it was significantly affected by the host plant on which the nymphs were reared. Mean mortality of nymphs 8 days after inoculation ranged between 52.3±7.3 for nymphs reared on cotton and 91.8±5.8 for nymphs reared on cucumber. Average survival times of nymphs treated with the fungal suspensions were also significantly influenced by the host plant, with a mean of 4.7±0.1 days for nymphs reared on cucumber, 6.6±0.2 days for cotton and 6.9±0.1 days for green pepper. The production of newly formed conidia was also affected by host plant and varied from 111000±8600 conidia/cadaver for nymphs reared on cotton to 597000±28000 conidia/cadaver for those reared on melon.

Amitus bennetti Viggiani & Evans (Hymenoptera: Platygasteridae) is a recently described parasitoid of the silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae). Behaviour and life history of the parasitoid are described. The first nymphal instar of B. argentifolii is preferred by the parasitoid, but the 1st through 4th instar may be parasitised. Females first investigate hosts with their antennae, then walk over the host, and eventually step with their front legs on the leaf and insert their ovipositor inside the host facing away from the host, while the hind legs are still on the host. The time from encounter to oviposition (=latency to oviposition) is shortest on the 1st instar. Oviposition duration (mean=39 s) comprises 50% of the handling time. Development time from egg to adult decreases from 72 days at 15 °C to 42 days at 20 °C to 28 days at 25 °C. We estimate that 400 degree days is required for development, with a development threshold of 10 °C. Adult longevity in the absence of hosts was 29, 26 and 19 days and with hosts present 8, 8 and 5 days at 15, 20 and 25 °C, respectively. Amitus bennetti is proovigenic and oviposits most eggs shortly after adult emergence. During the first day of their adult lives females laid 1, 31 and 49 eggs at 15, 20 and 25 °C, respectively. Compared with other parasitoid species, the development time of A. bennetti is very long, and the implications of this for management of B. argentifolii are discussed.

Experiments were conducted in Arizona, USA to examine the diel patterns of flight activity of two coexisting species of whiteflies, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) and Trialeurodes abutilonea (Haldeman) (Aleyrodidae). Aerial populations were monitored during parts of two growing seasons using sticky traps. It was found that on most days when more than 100 whiteflies were captured, the flight activity rhythms of the two species were remarkably similar. During 13 of 14 weeks if aerial populations of one species were used to predict populations of the other, coefficients of determination were highly significant. This is in part a function of the two species having parallel patterns of pupal eclosion and teneral periods of approximately the same duration. The two species both experience 90% eclosion within 1 h of the onset of photophase and both have a teneral period slightly in excess of 4 h at 27°C. As a result populations of the two whiteflies emerge together, become flight ready, and fly at the same time. Arizona populations of these two introduced species appear to have developed certain very similar behavioral and physiological processes under conditions of a rigorous desert climate.

Broad mite, Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Acari: Tarsonemidae), is a serious plant pest in tropical and subtropical regions. Phoretic associations between broad mite and two genera of whiteflies (Insecta: Homoptera: Aleyrodidae), namely Bemisia and Trialeurodes, have been reported from different parts of the world. Our purpose was to determine the specificity of the association between the mite and its phoretic hosts. Two host plants, potatoes and cucumbers, were used to study these relationships in the laboratory. Insects frozen for 24h were used as potential phoretic hosts in all experiments. Attachment levels were monitored by counting the number of mites attached to each insect. All tests were conducted for 4–6h, as attachment to Bemisia tabaci on potato shoots leveled off after 4h, increasing only marginally after 8h. Attachment levels to thrips (the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis) and to allate aphids (Myzus persicae) was negligible relative to the attachment to B. tabaci. Broad mite also attached to the whiteflies Dialeurodes citri, Aleyrodes singularis and Trialeurodes lauri, the latter being the least attractive species (including B. tabaci). Washing B. tabaci with pentane greatly reduced attachment. Using cucumbers as hosts did not substantially change the general trend, but attachment levels were lower. The phoretic relationship between broad mite and its insect hosts appears to be specific to whiteflies, with some whiteflies having a higher potential as phoretic hosts.

Abstract:   Five species of entomopathogenic fungi were tested against whiteflies and aphids. Cladosporium spp. showed a high incidence on the two insect species tested (81% of the total isolated species). However, C. uridenicola was the predominant species isolated from both insect species during the two successive seasons of 1998 and 1999. Natural infection by Cladosporium ranged from 18.19 to 44.38% and 16.4 to 45.27% in 1998 and 1999, respectively, according to insect species and the host plant. Statistical analysis revealed a high correlation ( R  = 0.8759 ± 0.093) between the total investigated and total infected of each insect species during the two successive years of the study. The natural infection of Cladosporium to whitefly life stages was higher on whitefly nymphs (87.8%) than adults (8.08%) and eggs (4.15%) in 1998 and 1999. The results showed that the seasonal distribution of Cladosporium occurred all year around, but rates were higher during the period from June until November which coincided with the high populations of whiteflies and aphids. The weather had a significant effect on infection of insects and had no effect on other fungi species . The laboratory tests showed a higher pathogenicity of the candidate on Aphis gossypii , Aphis craccivora and Bemisia agrentifollii than other reported fungi.

Nine cassava genotypes were grown at six representative sites in Nigeria for 3 years to study their response to cassava mosaic disease (CMD), investigate the influence of genotype × environment (G × E) interactions on their reactions to the disease, and identify genotypes with stability to the disease, using the Additive Main Effects and Multiplicative Interaction statistical model. Environments, genotypes and G × E interactions were highly significant (P < 0.01) for the disease. The G × E interactions accounted for 19.5% of the treatment sums of squares for CMD and influenced the relative ranking of genotypes across environments. The magnitude of the G × E interaction effect for CMD was larger than that of genotypes. Examination of the G × E interaction structure revealed specific areas where screening of cassava genotypes for resistance to CMD could be performed best. The study identified genotypes such as TMS 30001 and 63397 with resistance to CMD and CMD‐stable clone U/41044, which could be distributed to growers, and sites such as Ibadan and Ubiaja with high CMD severity for screening genotypes for reaction to CMD.

Cultures of Bemisia tabaci from Ivory Coast (IC), Pakistan (PK) and USA (US B-type) were compared for the frequency with which they transmitted three tomato geminivirus isolates: Indian tomato leaf curl virus from Bangalore (ITmLCV), and tomato yellow leaf curl viruses from Nigeria (TYLCV-Nig) and Senegal (TYLCV-Sen). Frequency of transmission from tomato to tomato depended both on the whitefly culture and the virus isolate. US B-type and IC whiteflies transmitted TYLCV-Sen more frequently than ITmLCV whereas PK whiteflies transmitted ITmLCV more frequently than TYLCV-Sen. US B-type whiteflies transmitted both viruses four to nine times more frequently than IC whiteflies. TYLCV-Nig was transmitted rarely by US B-type and not at all by IC whiteflies. Previous work indicates that the geminivirus coat protein controls vector transmissibility. The differential adaptation of TYLCV-Sen to transmission by US B-type whiteflies and of ITmLCV to PK whiteflies was associated with a large difference in epitope profile of the coat proteins of the two viruses. Also, the readily transmissible TYLCV-Sen differed appreciably in epitope profile from the poorly transmissible TYLCV-Nig, which reached a consistently greater concentration in source tissues but lacked epitope 18. However, the lack of epitope 18 in ITmLCV did not prevent its transmission by US B-type whiteflies. Differences in frequency and specificity of geminivirus transmission by whitefly cultures from different countries therefore were associated with differences among epitope profiles of the coat proteins of the viruses, but the structural features of the proteins that control transmission remain to be determined.

At least 25 wild type and high peroxidase tobacco Nicotiana tabacum L. plants were examined semiweekly over several weeks for pest insect distribution and damage in a 2 year field study. Incidence and/or severity of naturally occurring caterpillar damage (dingy cutworm (Feltia ducens Walker), black cutworm (Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel), tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta L.), and false tobacco budworm (= corn earworm Helicoverpa zea (Boddie)) was significantly reduced at several sample dates for high peroxidase vs. wild type plants. These results parallel those of prior laboratory studies with caterpillars. The number of adult whiteflies (Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) per plant was significantly reduced on high peroxidase compared to wild type plants on most sample dates in both years. The number of plants with leaves containing >100 aphids (primarily Myzus persicae Sulzer) per leaf on high peroxidase plants was significantly lower that on wild type plants after an equivalent invasion period in both years. A significantly higher proportion of aphids were found dead on leaf five of high peroxidase compared to wild type plants at most sample dates in both years. These results indicate that high peroxidase plants have resistance to a wide range of insects, implicating this enzyme as a broad range resistance mechanism. Horizontal transmission of the insect symbiont Rickettsia is plant-mediated
Bacteria in the genus Rickettsia, best known as vertebrate pathogens vectored by blood-feeding arthropods, can also be found in phytophagous insects. The presence of closely related bacterial symbionts in evolutionarily distant arthropod hosts presupposes a means of horizontal transmission, but no mechanism for this transmission has been described. Using a combination of experiments with live insects, molecular analyses and microscopy, we found that Rickettsia were transferred from an insect host (the whitefly Bemisia tabaci) to a plant, moved inside the phloem, and could be acquired by other whiteflies. In one experiment, Rickettsia was transferred from the whitefly host to leaves of cotton, basil and black nightshade, where the bacteria were restricted to the phloem cells of the plant. In another experiment, Rickettsia-free adult whiteflies, physically segregated but sharing a cotton leaf with Rickettsia-plus individuals, acquired the Rickettsia at a high rate. Plants can serve as a reservoir for horizontal transmission of Rickettsia, a mechanism which may explain the occurrence of phylogenetically similar symbionts among unrelated phytophagous insect species. This plant-mediated transmission route may also exist in other insect-symbiont systems and, since symbionts may play a critical role in the ecology and evolution of their hosts, serve as an immediate and powerful tool for accelerated evolution.
