How novel traits originate in evolution is still one of the most perplexing questions in Evolutionary Biology. Building on a previous account of evolutionary innovation, I here propose that evolutionary novelties are those individualized characters that are not homologous to any characters in the ancestor. To clarify this definition, I here provide a detailed analysis of the concepts of “character individuality” and “homology” first, before addressing their role for our understanding of evolutionary innovation. I will argue (1) that functional as well as structural considerations are important for character individualization; and (2) that compositional (structural) and positional homology need to be clearly distinguished to properly describe the evolutionary transformations of hierarchically structured characters. My account will therefore integrate functional and structural perspectives and put forward a new multi-level view of character identity and transformation.  相似文献

Of the 5000 fish species on coral reefs, corals dominate the diet of just 41 species. Most (61%) belong to a single family, the butterflyfishes (Chaetodontidae). We examine the evolutionary origins of chaetodontid corallivory using a new molecular phylogeny incorporating all 11 genera. A 1759‐bp sequence of nuclear (S7I1 and ETS2) and mitochondrial (cytochrome b) data yielded a fully resolved tree with strong support for all major nodes. A chronogram, constructed using Bayesian inference with multiple parametric priors, and recent ecological data reveal that corallivory has arisen at least five times over a period of 12 Ma, from 15.7 to 3 Ma. A move onto coral reefs in the Miocene foreshadowed rapid cladogenesis within Chaetodon and the origins of corallivory, coinciding with a global reorganization of coral reefs and the expansion of fast‐growing corals. This historical association underpins the sensitivity of specific butterflyfish clades to global coral decline.  相似文献

Foraging success is likely to affect hunger level and motivationto locate and exploit novel food sources in animals. We exploredthe relationship between scramble competition for limited foodand foraging innovation in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata),predicting that poor competitors would be more likely to innovatewhen presented with novel foraging tasks. Among males, we foundthat latency to complete novel foraging tasks was correlated bothwith weight gain and number of food items consumed, suggestingthat poor competitors are more likely to innovate. However,among females there was no relationship between innovative tendencyand either weight gain or foraging success. We suggest thatthis sex difference may reflect parental investment asymmetriesin males and females, and we predict similar sex differencesin other species.  相似文献

Observations of fishing behavior in nonhuman primates are rare and isolated, and there is no prior published observation on the behavior in long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis). We observed fishing behavior in 3 groups of long-tailed macaques from 2 separate study sites in North Sumatra and East Kalimantan, Indonesia. We propose that the behavior is rare and fulfills the requirements for classification as innovation. Further, all of the fishing individuals were watched by other members of their group, with their actions inciting attempts at fishing by them. We consider the possibility that the behavior has the potential to become cultural within the populations.  相似文献

The protection of vulnerable developing structures evolved repeatedly in terrestrial organisms and includes, among others, viviparity in animals and the seed in land plants. In mushroom-forming fungi (Agaricomycetes), sexual spores are born on fruiting bodies, the growth of which is a complex developmental process that is exposed to environmental factors (e.g., desiccation, fungivorous animals). Mushroom-forming fungi evolved a series of innovations in fruiting body protection, however, how these emerged is obscure, leaving the evolutionary principles of fruiting body development poorly known. Here, we show that developmental innovations that lead to the spore-producing surface (hymenophore) being enclosed in a protected environment display asymmetry in their evolution and are associated with increased diversification rates. ‘Enclosed’ development evolved convergently and became a dominant developmental type in several clades of mushrooms. This probably mirrors spore production benefits for species with protected fruiting body initials, by better coping with environmental factors. Our observations highlight new morphological traits associated with mushroom diversification that parallel the evolution of protection strategies in other organisms, such as viviparity or the seed in animals or plants, respectively, but in the context of spore development, highlighting the general importance of protecting vulnerable progeny across the tree of life.  相似文献

针对长期以来培养医学生的科研创新能力主要依靠零散的课外科研活动、受众面窄、没有系统性课程教学及其相关制度保障、致使对医学生科研创新能力培养明显乏力低效这一共性瓶颈教学问题,自2002年起,汕头大学医学院生物化学与分子生物学教学团队,在“科教相辅相佐”、“以学生为中心”、“以问题为导向”等先进教育理念指导下,倚重汕头大学医学院“医者之心”系列课程与书院育人文化之特色,发挥汕头大学的生物学、基础医学和临床医学一级学科均拥有本/硕/博/博后完整人才培养体系之优势,联合其他相关专业教学团队,在建立充分体现医学生科研创新能力培养内涵,覆盖医学本科5年全过程的核心课程体系的基础之上,历经20载的不懈努力,补充修善,成功构建了“3+X”模式,着力培养医学生的科研创新能力。所谓“3”意指对医学生的“全人培养”、“全程培养”和“全方位培养”。所谓“X”意指针对“3+X”模式运行效能的若干个验证性维度,主要包括组织医学生参加各种形式的全国大学生创新实验研究大赛、国际大学生学术研讨会,由医学本科生作为第一作者撰写发表学术论文等。培养医学生科研创新能力的成效十分显著,为有效解决上述共性瓶颈教学问题提供了一个有重要借鉴价值的范例。  相似文献

The evolution of parasitic behavior may catalyze the exploitation of new ecological niches yet also binds the fate of a parasite to that of its host. It is thus not clear whether evolutionary transitions from free‐living organism to parasite lead to increased or decreased rates of diversification. We explore the evolution of brood parasitism in long‐tongued bees and find decreased rates of diversification in eight of 10 brood parasitic clades. We propose a pathway for the evolution of brood parasitic strategy and find that a strategy in which a closed host nest cell is parasitized and the host offspring is killed by the adult parasite represents an obligate first step in the appearance of a brood parasitic lineage; this ultimately evolves into a strategy in which an open host cell is parasitized and the host offspring is killed by a specialized larval instar. The transition to parasitizing open nest cells expanded the range of potential hosts for brood parasitic bees and played a fundamental role in the patterns of diversification seen in brood parasitic clades. We address the prevalence of brood parasitic lineages in certain families of bees and examine the evolution of brood parasitism in other groups of organisms.  相似文献

Given near unanimity in the environmental and industrial communities about the need for a new generation of environmental technology, the policy process unfortunately lags behind in moving toward this objective. This article examines causes and remedies for this gap in the context of American environmental policy. U.S. environmental laws continue to be pervaded by structural biases against new technology, and the complexity of their administration exacerbates the problem. Within the last few years, several important reform initiatives have arisen from inside the regulatory community; however, these can only go so far, given the current statutory framework Congress, too long quiescent, needs to become involved. A legislative reform package is proposed consisting of four main elements: a legislative mandate that makes promotion of technological innovation an explicit environmental objective; elimination of structural features in current law that impede innovation; creation of a new framework for standard-setting and enforcement that puts every firm on a trajectory toward environmental and technological improvement; and enlisting regulation as a "demand-pull" for environmentally superior technology.  相似文献
