Summary Ultrastructural studies on sperm-egg interaction at the time of fertilization inLaternula limicola were performed. The temporary-acrosome did not change morphologically while the sperm passed through the egg investments. At the onset of sperm entrance into the egg, however, the temporary-acrosome and mitochondria were eliminated from the sperm. Afterwards the sperm was engulfed by the egg surface without membrane fusion of the gametes. After entry the sperm nucleus was surrounded by four membranes: the plasma membranes of the egg and of the sperm, and the membranes of the sperm nuclear envelope. As the sperm nucleus differentiated into the male pronucleus, the plasma membranes of both the sperm and egg were initially vesiculated, then dispersed into the egg cytoplasm. Finally, the sperm nuclear envelope changed into the male pronuclear membrane accompanying sperm chromatin dispersion.  相似文献

The Kimmeridgian Series situated at the North ofLisbon is included in the Portuguese Lusitanian basin. Its sandy clays pelagic facies with planctonic foraminifera contains a new species of bivalvia: Aulacomyella abadiensis related to A. neogeaeImlay from the Middle Kimmeridgian of Mexico and from the Kimmeridgian of Crimea. The bacterial symbionts of many marine invertebrates contain ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) carboxylase but apparently no carboxysomes, polyhedral bodies containing RuBP carboxylase. In the few cases where polyhedral bodies have been observed they have not been characterised enzymatically. Polyhedral bodies, 50–90 nm in diameter, were observed in thin cell sections of Thiobacillus thyasiris the putative symbiont of Thyasira flexuosa and RuBP carboxylase activity was detected in both soluble and particulate fractions after centrifugation of cell-free extracts. RuBP carboxylase purified 90-fold from the soluble fraction was of high molecular weight and consisted of large and small subunits, with molecular weights of 53,110 and 11,100 respectively. Particulate RuBP carboxylase activity was associated with polyhedral bodies 50–100 nm in diameter, as revealed by density gradient centrifugation and electron microscopy. Therefore, the polyhedral bodies were inferred to be carboxysomes. Native electrophoresis of isolated carboxysomes demonstrated a major band which comigrated with the purified RuBP carboxylase and three minor bands of lower molecular weight. Sodium dodecyl-sulphate (SDS) gel electrophoresis of SDS-dissociated carboxysomes demonstrated nine major polypeptides two of which were the large and small subunits of RuBP carboxylase. The RuBP carboxylase subunits represented 21% of the total carboxysomal protein. The most abundant polypeptide had a molecular weight of 40,500. In the framework of the national monitoring program for marine biotoxins in bivalve molluscs for 2002 and 2003, a total of 862 samples were examined to investigate the presence of domoic acid (DA). Samples mainly consisted of mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) and venus clams (Venus verucosa) from various Greek harvesting areas. In 2002, 83% of all samples examined contained less that 1 μg DA/g, while in 2003 this percentage was 95%. In both years, DA was only detected in springtime without any sample exceeding the regulatory level. In 2002, the highest value was 14.0 μg/g in mussels, while in 2003 these were 4.2 μg/g in mussels and 5.6 μg/g in venus clams. This is the first report regarding the presence of ASP toxins in Greek shellfish.  相似文献

Swimming has evolved in only a few orders of Bivalves. In this study, the behavior, morphometry, and mechanics of swimming in the file shell Limaria fragilis were characterized and compared to the better understood scallops. Absolute swimming speed (cm sec-1) increased with increasing shell height, although relative swimming speed (body lengths sec-1) did not covary with shell height. The increase in absolute swimming speed was due to an increase in the distance covered during each valve clap as clap distance (cm clap-1) also increased with shell height while clapping frequency (claps sec-1) did not covary with animal size. Limaria fragilis displayed a variety of morphological changes related to size. Shell length was negatively allometric with shell height indicating the shell became proportionately slimmer in larger animals. Dry shell mass was negatively allometric with shell height, while both dry adductor muscle mass and dry mantle + tentacle mass were positively allometric. Autotomy of mantle tentacles significantly decreased clap distance by 13% without affecting clapping frequency or swimming speed.  相似文献

Erosion and transport of juvenile benthic invertebrates, including bivalves, have the potential to alter patterns of distribution and abundance during the early post-settlement period. However, the factors influencing rates of postlarval dispersal are not well understood. Both hydrodynamics and behaviour (e.g. burrowing) are likely to play a role in determining patterns of transport of juvenile bivalves. To determine the relationship between sediment transport and bivalve dispersal, experiments were conducted in a racetrack flume to examine the effect of grain size, flow, and clam size on rates of erosion of two species of juvenile clams (Mya arenaria and Mercenaria mercenaria). Results of the experiments were compared to predictions of erosion thresholds based on the physical characteristics of the sediment and clams. Erosion of Mercenaria was greater than Mya, the opposite of predictions based on Mercenaria's greater density, indicating the importance of burrowing behaviour. In most cases, erosion also was greater in the finer sand, in contrast to the predicted similarity of erosion thresholds of the two sediments. However, clam erosion did increase with increasing shear velocity and decrease with clam size, as expected. The results of this study indicate that both hydrodynamics and behaviour play roles in the transport of these two species of juvenile bivalves and that their vulnerability to passive erosion cannot be predicted solely from knowledge of sediment transport.  相似文献

Complete or partial depletion of resource in a freshwater habitat is a common phenomenon. As a consequence, aquatic fauna including bivalve molluscs may be exposed to dietary stress on a seasonal basis. Haemocyte based innate immune profile of the freshwater mollusc Lamellidens marginalis (Bivalvia: Eulamellibranchiata) was evaluated under starvation induced stress for a maximum period of 32 days in a controlled laboratory condition. During starvation, the bivalve haemocytes maintained a homeostasis in phagocytic efficacy and nitric oxide generation ability with respect to the control. The mollusc maintained a significantly high protein content in its haemolymph and tissues under the nutritional stress with respect to the control. The dietary stress had no significant impact on the activity of digestive tissue derived α-amylase till sixteenth day but by 32 days the enzyme activity went down significantly. The histopathological profile revealed that the bivalve was adapted to maintain a steady immune profile by incurring degeneration of its own tissue structure. The total haemocyte count surged significantly till 16 days but differed insignificantly with respect to the control at 32 days implying probable haematopoietic exhaustion. The study reflects the instinctive urge of the bivalve to maintain immune physiology at heavy metabolic cost under nutrient limited condition.  相似文献

In contrast with the paradigmatic mammalian metallothioneins (MTs), mollusc MT systems consist at least of a high-cadmium induced form, possibly involved in detoxification, and another isoform either constitutive or regulated by essential metals and probably associated with housekeeping metabolism. With the aim of providing a deeper characterization of the coordination features of a molluscan MT peptide of the latter kind, we have analyzed here the metal-binding abilities of the recombinant MeMT-10-IV isoform of Mytilus edulis (MeMT). Also, comparison with other MTs of this type has been undertaken. A synthetic complementary DNA was constructed, cloned and expressed into two Escherichia coli systems. Upon zinc coordination, MeMT folds in vivo into highly chiral and stable Zn(7) complexes, with an exceptional reluctance to fully substitute cadmium(II) and/or copper(I) for zinc(II). In vivo cadmium binding leads to homometallic Cd(7) complexes that structurally differ from any of the in vitro prepared Cd(7) complexes. Homometallic Cu-MeMT can only be obtained in vitro from Zn(7)-MeMT after a great molar excess of copper(I) has been added. In vivo, two different heterometallic Zn,Cu-MeMT complexes are recovered, which nicely correspond to two distinct stages of the in vitro zinc/copper replacement. These MeMT metal-binding features are consistent with a physiological role related to basal/housekeeping metal, mainly zinc, metabolism, and confirm the correspondence between the MeMT gene response pattern and the functional properties of the encoded protein.  相似文献

The global growth of farmed shellfish production has resulted in considerable research investigating how biofouling compromises farm productivity. Shellfish fitness can be compared between fouled stock and stock which has undergone treatment. As treatment options are often harsh, they may deleteriously affect stock. The projected impact of biofouling may therefore be confounded by the impact of treatments. Given the substantial cost of fouling removal, some have questioned the necessity of biofouling mitigation strategies. Meta-analysis revealed that biofouling typically reduces shellfish fitness. However, the fitness of treated stock was often lower or equal to fouled control stock, indicating that many common antifouling (AF) strategies are ineffective at enhancing farm productivity. Overall, caution and diligence are required to successfully implement biofouling mitigation strategies. The need remains for increased passive prevention approaches and novel AF strategies suitable for shellfish culture, such as strategic siting of bivalve farms in areas of low biofouling larval supply.  相似文献
