Summary Epistatic interactions between unlinked transgene loci in tobacco plants were studied following sexual crosses between different transgenic lines. Three potential modifier transgene loci, which were structurally similar but integrated at different chromosomal locations, were tested for their ability to influence the expression of a partially homologous target transgene locus. After introduction of an individual modifier locus, the target locus could be either unaffected, completely inactivated and methylated or differentially sensitive, showing more complete inactivation and methylation when homozygous than when hemizygous. The implications of these results for inbreeding depression in plants are discussed. 相似文献

The mating-system was investigated in a natural population of the tetraploid taxon Acacia nilotica ssp. leiocarpa using open-pollinated seeds from 15 families. Six-day-old germinated seeds were used for starch-gel electrophoresis. Three enzyme systems (ADH, EST-1, and 6PGD) were scored. Isozyme banding patterns and segregation of isozyme variants within families suggest that the species is an autotetraploid displaying tetrasomic inheritance. Estimates of single-locus (ts=0.358) and multilocus (tm=0.384) population outcrossing rates were homogeneous, and indicate substantial selfing in the population. Heterogeneity of outcrossing estimates among loci and families were marked, suggesting departure from the assumptions of the mixed-mating model. Implications of the result for the utilization of germplasm in tree-improvement programmes are noted. 相似文献

Isonymy analysis is reported for a sample of 188,895 marriages extracted from the Utah Genealogical Database. Inbreeding rates estimated by isonymy are low, ranging from 0.005 for the earliest marriage cohort (1800-1809) to 0.0008 in the most recent cohort (1950-1959). The inbreeding values decrease considerably through time, but they are consistently higher than inbreeding values estimated from pedigrees. Several explanations are offered for this, including polyphyletism of surnames and the presence of Scandinavian patronyms in this population. Random isonymy between subdivisions is also compared with random kinship estimated from migration matrices. In terms of within-subdivision kinship, the two approaches yield similar results. However, the results are quite dissimilar for between-subdivision kinship. This reflects the recent and nonrandom settlement of Utah by different ethnic groups with different surname distributions. In later time periods, the correlations between the two types of kinship estimates increase, showing that migration patterns (which are strongly determined by geographic distance) exert an increasing influence on the distribution of surnames. Logistic regression is performed on a subset of marriages (n = 88,202), using isonymous vs. nonisonymous marriage as the dependent variable. The independent variables are year of marriage, geographic distance between husband's and wife's birthplaces, endogamous vs. exogamous marriage, and population sizes of husband's and wife's birthplaces. Year of marriage and geographic distance are shown to be significant independent predictors of isonymous marriage. 相似文献

For social insect species, intraspecific variation in colony social structure provides an opportunity to relate the evolution of social behavior to ecological factors. The species Myrmica punctiventris is a cavity-dwelling forest ant that exhibits very different colony structures in two populations in the northeastern United States. Combined data from seasonal censuses, allozyme electrophoresis, and worker hostility tests showed that a population of M. punctiventris in Vermont was strictly monogynous and seasonally polydomous. The same procedures showed that a population of M. punctiventris in New York was facultatively polygynous and predominantly monodomous. Genetic relatedness among colony-mates was not different from Hamilton's expected values in the Vermont population and was consistent with little exchange of ants between colonies and single-mating of queens. In contrast, relatedness was lower in New York, and examination of nest-mate genotypes revealed exchange of ants between colonies, high rates of colony loss and replacement of queens, or multiple-mating of queens. The genetic structure of the Vermont population was consistent with no inbreeding, but in New York, the population genetic structure reflected microgeographic subdivision and inbreeding. Previous study of the ant communities at these sites implicates nest-site limitation in New York as a primary constraint on social structure. 相似文献

Genetic-parameter estimates and parental breeding-value predictions were compared from open-pollinated and control-pollinated progeny populations of Eucalyptus globulus and two populations of E. nitens. For E. globulus there were two types of open-pollinated populations (native stand open-pollinated and seed orchard open-pollinated) and two types of control-pollinated populations (intra-provenance and interprovenance full-sib families). For E. nitens there were two populations, a seed orchard open-pollinated population and intra-provenance full-sib families. Progeny tests were established across multiple sites and 2-year height and diameter were measured and volume calculated. Genetic parameters from native stand open-pollinated E. globulus were unlike the parameters from the other three E. globulus populations; heritability estimates were severely inflated, presumably due to high levels, and possibly differential levels, of inbreeding depression relative to the other populations. Estimates of dominance variance in the E. globulus full-sib populations were high, but were zero in the E. nitens population. Correlations among parental breeding values, predicted using data from the different populations, were generally low and non-significant, with two exceptions: predictions from the two E. globulus full-sib populations were significantly correlated (r=0.54, P = 0.001), as were predictions from the E. nitens seed orchard OP and full-sib population (r = 0.61, P = 0.08). There was some indication that superior parents of E. globulus native stand open-pollinated families also tended to have above-average breeding values based on the performance of intra-provenance full-sib offspring. The consequences of these results for exploitation of base-population collections from native stands are discussed. 相似文献

Hybrid breeding is an effective approach in many agricultural crops. In allogamous tree species severe inbreeding depression and long reproductive cycles generally prohibit its use. However, three generations of selfing in silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) were obtained by forcing trees to flowering under greenhouse conditions. Hybrids were produced by crossing first-, second and third-generation selfed lines. The effects of different levels of parental inbreeding on the growth performance of hybrid families were observed in a 9-year-old field progeny test. Also, provenance crosses were carried out between selfed lines from different parts of Finland and several other European countries. Observations of growth performance of the provenance hybrids were made in the same trial. The results indicated that the mean stem volumes were significantly different between classes of parental in breeding coefficients (FP) (P<0.0001), and were positively correlated with FP (r=0.9106, P<0.05). Within-family variation of the hybrid families decreased with an increase of FP. The performance of the provenance crosses between parents at a relatively close distance did not depart significantly from the standard controls. However, when the cross distance was extended far to the south, hybrids grew faster, indicating either higher heterozygosity or an extended growth period. 相似文献

Studies of inbreeding depression in plant populations have focused primarily on comparisons of selfing versus outcrossing in self-compatible species. Here we examine the effect of five naturally occurring levels of inbreeding (f ranging from 0 to 0.25 by pedigree) on components of lifetime fitness in a field population of the self-incompatible annual, Raphanus sativus. Pre- and postgermination survival and reproductive success were examined for offspring resulting from compatible cross-pollinations. Multiple linear regression of inbreeding level on rates of fruit and seed abortion as well as seed weight and total seed weight per fruit were not significant. Inbreeding level was not found to affect seed germination, offspring survival in the field, date of first flowering, or plant biomass (dry weight minus fruit). The effect of inbreeding on seedling viability in the greenhouse and viability to flowering was significant but small and inconsistently correlated with inbreeding level. Maternal fecundity, however, a measure of seed yield, was reduced almost 60% in offspring from full-sib crosses (f = 0.25) relative to offspring resulting from experimental outcross pollinations (f = 0). Water availability, a form of physiological stress, affected plant biomass but did not affect maternal fecundity, nor did it interact with inbreeding level to influence these characters. The delayed expression of strong inbreeding depression suggests that highly deleterious recessive alleles were not a primary cause of fitness loss with inbreeding. Highly deleterious recessives may have been purged by bottlenecks in population size associated with the introduction of Raphanus and its recent range expansions. In general, reductions in total relative fitness of greater than 50% associated with full-sib crosses should be sufficient to prohibit the evolution of self-compatibility via transmission advantage in Raphanus. 相似文献
