In this study we examined ecosystem respiration (RECO) data from 104 sites belonging to FLUXNET, the global network of eddy covariance flux measurements. The goal was to identify the main factors involved in the variability of RECO: temporally and between sites as affected by climate, vegetation structure and plant functional type (PFT) (evergreen needleleaf, grasslands, etc.). We demonstrated that a model using only climate drivers as predictors of RECO failed to describe part of the temporal variability in the data and that the dependency on gross primary production (GPP) needed to be included as an additional driver of RECO. The maximum seasonal leaf area index (LAIMAX) had an additional effect that explained the spatial variability of reference respiration (the respiration at reference temperature Tref=15 °C, without stimulation introduced by photosynthetic activity and without water limitations), with a statistically significant linear relationship (r2=0.52, P<0.001, n=104) even within each PFT. Besides LAIMAX, we found that reference respiration may be explained partially by total soil carbon content (SoilC). For undisturbed temperate and boreal forests a negative control of total nitrogen deposition (Ndepo) on reference respiration was also identified. We developed a new semiempirical model incorporating abiotic factors (climate), recent productivity (daily GPP), general site productivity and canopy structure (LAIMAX) which performed well in predicting the spatio‐temporal variability of RECO, explaining >70% of the variance for most vegetation types. Exceptions include tropical and Mediterranean broadleaf forests and deciduous broadleaf forests. Part of the variability in respiration that could not be described by our model may be attributed to a series of factors, including phenology in deciduous broadleaf forests and management practices in grasslands and croplands.  相似文献

Abstract: We used radiotelemetry to locate daytime forms of endangered Lower Keys marsh rabbits (LKMRs; Sylvilagus palustris hefneri) throughout their range so we could determine habitat characteristics of diurnal cover. We typically found forms (n = 1,298) of 36 rabbits in brackish wetlands in patches of saltmarsh or buttonwoods. In freshwater wetlands, forms (n = 54) were located most often in patches of freshwater hardwoods embedded in or adjacent to freshwater marshes. Forms (n = 942) in brackish wetlands were characterized by thick groundcover (>75%), whereas those (n = 42) in freshwater wetlands had both thick groundcover and canopy vegetation. The mean minimum convex polygon around forms of 15 rabbits was 1.4 ha (SD = 1.7), with smaller ranges characterized by thick bunchgrasses or clump-forming sedges. To increase the amount of annual space usable by LKMRs, managers should provide more saltmarsh habitat interspersed with buttonwoods and enhance ground cover in existing habitat.  相似文献

During the preparation of a World Rubiaceae Checklist , numerous unplaced taxa were encountered, including illegitimate and invalid names, and species for which generic placement is uncertain. According to sperm competition models, a male spawning in a disfavoured role should have spermatozoa with higher velocity but shorter longevity compared with a male spawning in a favoured role. Moreover, immunosuppressive androgens are needed to produce both secondary sexual characters and sperm cells. The 'sperm protection' hypothesis suggests that the immunosuppressive action of androgens has evolved to protect haploid spermatozoa, which are antigenic, from autoimmune attacks. Therefore, a male with high sexual ornamentation may be more susceptible to diseases but may possess better quality ejaculate than his less ornamented rival. We studied sexual ornamentation (breeding tubercles), ejaculation quality (sperm concentration, longevity and spermatozoal velocity) and intensity of parasitism in the cyprinid, Rutilus rutilus . Sperm longevity and spermatozoal velocity were positively correlated. Males having elaborated sexual ornamentation had longer-lived sperm and more Myxobolus mülleri parasites in the liver compared with males with low ornamentation. However, no difference was found between males with different degrees of ornamentation with respect to sperm concentration, spermatozoal velocity or other parasites. Since the highly ornamented males had higher sperm longevity, the present results are partly consistent with the predictions of the sperm competition models and the 'sperm protection' hypothesis.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 81 , 111–117.  相似文献

1. The abundance, production and control of pelagic heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) in the Lower River Rhine (Germany) were investigated. Field samples (live‐counting technique) were taken at least every 2 weeks at Cologne (km 685) over a period of 20 months. In addition, Lagrangian sampling was carried out 160 km downstream of Cologne (Kalkar–Grieth, km 845) over a period of 12 months. Potential HNF growth rates and loss rates caused by planktonic predators were estimated in the laboratory (size fractionation experiments) and compared with the changes in HNF‐density in a water parcel flowing downstream. 2. Mean abundance (±SD) ranged from 7 ± 6 to 4890 ± 560 individuals mL–1 and was positively correlated with discharge. Heterotrophic nanoflagellates abundance increased up to 30‐fold during flood events, whereas there were only minor changes in the taxonomic composition. 3. HNF growth rate ranged from 0.16 ± 0.12 to 1.98 ± 0.10 day–1. Between 0 and 95% (mean: 32%) of the gross production was lost to planktonic predators; a larger portion between 0 and 195% (mean: 64%) of the HNF gross production was lost by other means. 4. There may be an important role for benthic predators in the control of pelagic HNF. First, production of HNF was high and grazing losses to planktonic predators low at times when HNF abundance was low. Secondly, high in situ loss rates (not explicable by planktonic predators), which were positively related to temperature, indicate the importance of biotic interactions. Thirdly, the dependence of HNF abundance on discharge indicated a decrease grazing intensity with rising water levels (increase in water volume/colonised river bed ratio). 5. The impact of discharge on planktonic HNF mediated by the grazing impact of benthic predators was modelled, showing a good fit with the field data.  相似文献

Mass loss of chick‐rearing birds can be the direct consequence of physiological stress (reproductive stress hypothesis) or an adaptive mass adjustment in response to the increased demands on flight efficiency during the flight‐intensive chick‐rearing period (adaptive mass loss hypothesis). To test which of these hypotheses best explains mass loss in South Polar Skuas Stercorarius maccormicki rearing chicks, a food supplementation experiment was carried out in the austral summer 2000/01 at King George Island, Antarctica. Half of the breeding pairs were fed about 20% of the chick's daily energy demand every second day and chick growth and adult nest attendance were recorded. Parents were caught at the start and the end of chick‐rearing to calculate adult mass loss. Male parents of food‐supplemented pairs attended their nest territories more than control males but females kept their attendance constant. Chick growth was only minimally affected and the treatment probably had no fitness consequences. Male Skuas in control pairs had a higher deviation from the body size–mass regression at the end of chick‐rearing compared with the start, supporting the stress hypothesis, whereas female deviation remained unchanged. Males of food‐supplemented pairs were heavier than unsupplemented males at the end of the breeding cycle but not significantly so. Food‐supplemented females were lighter at the end, supporting the adaptive mass loss hypothesis. Adult mass loss is thus best explained by the reproductive stress hypothesis in males but by the adaptive mass loss hypothesis in females. However, the two hypotheses are not mutually exclusive and the results do not exclude the possibility that mass loss in females is stress‐induced but the amount of mass lost is an adaptive adjustment to the reliability of the food supply. The finding that members of a breeding pair may follow different strategies of mass adjustment has implications for the use of mass loss as an index of parental effort. Without knowing which strategy each sex has adopted it is of little use to compare mass loss between parents.  相似文献

1. The variability in the stable isotope signatures of carbon and nitrogen (δ13C and δ15N) in different phytoplankton taxa was studied in one mesotrophic and three eutrophic lakes in south‐west Finland. The lakes were sampled on nine to 16 occasions over 2–4 years and most of the time were dominated by cyanobacteria and diatoms. A total of 151 taxon‐specific subsamples covering 18 different phytoplankton taxa could be isolated by filtration through a series of sieves and by flotation/sedimentation, followed by microscopical identification and screening for purity. 2. Substantial and systematic differences between phytoplankton taxa, seasons and lakes were observed for both δ13C and δ15N. The values of δ13C ranged from ?34.4‰ to ?5.9‰ and were lowest in chrysophytes (?34.4‰ to ?31.3‰) and diatoms (?30.6‰ to ?26.6‰). Cyanobacteria were most variable (?32.4‰ to ?5.9‰), including particularly high values in the nostocalean cyanobacterium Gloeotrichia echinulata (?14.4‰ to ?5.9‰). For δ13C, the taxon‐specific amplitude of temporal changes within a lake was usually <1–8‰ (<1–4‰ for microalgae alone and <1–8‰ for cyanobacteria alone), whereas the amplitude among taxa within a water sample was up to 31‰. 3. The values of δ15N ranged from ?2.1‰ to 12.8‰ and were high in chrysophytes, dinophytes and diatoms, but low in the nitrogen‐fixing cyanobacteria Anabaena spp., Aphanizomenon spp. and G. echinulata (?2.1‰ to 1.6‰). Chroococcalean cyanobacteria ranged from ?1.4‰ to 8.9‰. For δ15N, the taxon‐specific amplitude of temporal changes within a lake was 2–6‰, (2–6‰ for microalgae alone and 2–4‰ for cyanobacteria alone) and the amplitude among taxa within a water sample was up to 11‰. 4. The isotopic signatures of phytoplankton changed systematically with their physical and chemical environment, most notably with the concentrations of nutrients, but correlations were non‐systematic and site‐specific. 5. The substantial variability in the isotopic signatures of phytoplankton among taxa, seasons and lakes complicates the interpretation of isotopic signatures in lacustrine food webs. However, taxon‐specific values and seasonal patterns showed some consistency among years and may eventually be predictable.  相似文献

Climate change in concert with habitat loss and degradation are major threats to global biodiversity. As part of climate change, the occurrence of extreme climatic events is expected to increase. Agricultural intensification has led to the increased homogeneity of agricultural habitats and declines in farmland species diversity. We investigated the abundance of common frog Rana temporaria populations in boreal farmlands in relation to multiple scales of landscape structure during years 2002–2003, and the effect of habitat structure on R. temporaria population persistence during a severe drought. On average, 113 and 24 egg clutches were observed per site in years 2002 and 2003, respectively. This dramatic decline was synchronized over the entire study area (ca. 320 km2), with some local variations. Population persistence was higher in sites where ground water levels decreased less but it was also positively correlated with the heterogeneity of the adjacent landscape. Under normal weather conditions, local habitat characteristics had a dominating role on R. temporaria population abundance, as it was positively correlated with the amount of ditches and ponds within the study sites. After the drought, however, population abundance was related to landscape and regional level factors. The results indicate that landscape homogenization can have negative effects on population persistence during climate change. They also show that the scale at which landscape characteristics affect populations can be strongly dependent of processes functioning at large scales, such as weather. In summary, heterogeneous landscapes may lower the risk of regional amphibian population declines under extreme weather perturbations and serve as sources of recovery in postdisturbance recovery phases. Thus, maintaining such areas should be promoted in long-term biodiversity conservation.  相似文献
