Rydb. AlthoughA. alborosea was initially considered arctic in distribution, it became apparent that a southern montane element also exists. Our results suggest that morphological differences between arctic and southern montane specimens represent clinal variation. The additional morphological data for specimens that occur more than 1,500 km south of the species' range as it was initially described result in a better understanding of this once presumed arctic taxon. Morphological variation in the dioecious speciesA. corymbosa, A. marginata, A. microphylla, A. parvifolia, andA. umbrinella was greater between the genders than was geographic variation within each gender. These results demonstrate that both pistillate and staminate specimens must be examined in dioecious species ofAntennaria if morphological variation in the respective species is to be fully understood. Character size or number of broadly distributed species (A. microphylla andA. parvifolia) generally decreased with increasing longitude, whereas characters of species with more restricted distributions (A. alborosea, A. corymbosa, andA. marginata) generally increased in size or number with increasing latitude or longitude.Antennaria umbrinella was an exception in this respect. 相似文献

Genetic variation within and the relationship betweenStellaria longipes

Muhl. were studied. Ten enzyme systems were assessed in eight natural populations ofS. longipes (25 loci) and three ofS. longifolia (20 loci) using starch and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Patterns of population differentiation corresponded to geographic distance. There was no evidence that polyploidS. longipes had greater electrophoretic variability than diploidS. longipes. The isozyme data confirmed extensive population differentiation in these species and, within that context, a relatively close relationship betweenS. longipes andS. longifolia. ethnographic and geographic proximities.
The results of this study confirm the general presumptions, (a) that dermal traits, in general, and palmar characters, in
particular, do help in understanding the biologic/ethnic affinities among different groups both at macro and micro levels
and (b) the different types of traits, which are likely to be influenced by different genetic and/or environmental factors

Summary Electron microscopic studies revealed that major cytological changes in the cortical cells of poplar (Populus euramericana cv. gelrica) began to occur in early September in conjunction with the metabolic transition from the growing to the wintering stage. During this transition, the cells became temporarily rich in endoplasmic reticulum, polysomes and vesicles. As the conspicuous formation of organelles progressed, the large vacuoles became smaller and filled with osmiophilic materials. Undefined organelles (protein-lipid bodies) also increased in number. From late October until March, organelles involved in protein synthesis were sparsely distributed in the cells, indicating that the number of these organelles is probably linked to the seasonal cycle of protein synthesis. In early February, after release from dormancy, fusion of vacuoles proceeded in the cells. The inclusion of organelles and a gradual decrease in the amount of osmiophilic materials in the vacuoles occurred at this stage. Summary
Nauclea diderrichii (De Wild, and Th. Dur.) Merill (Rubiaceae), an indigenous hardwood of West Africa, is increasingly being grown commercially. This study investigates the potential for vegetative propagation and clonal selection, and raises some fundamental questions about the physiology of apical dominance and of plagiotropism. Rooting ability was high, with up to 100% rooting in 2–4 weeks, when different Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) concentrations and leaf areas were tested. Auxin applications greatly increased the numbers of roots per cutting. The decapitation of unbranched plants revealed clonal variation in apical dominance and also in the establishment of outright dominance by the two shoots formed from the outgrowth of the axillary buds of the opposite leaves at the top node. Regression analysis of the Dominance Ratio (length of dominant: length of the sub-dominant shoot at the time of achieving dominance) against overall lateral bud activity (r = 0.82), showed that when the two top shoots co-dominate they provide a more powerful source of Correlative Inhibition than when one of the top shoots dominates the other. The imposition of plagiotropism in the axillary bud occurred over a period of a few days as the terminal and axillary buds emerged from the stipule. Growth of accessory buds on intact plants and debranched cuttings was orthotropic. These results are discussed with regard to the role of the leaf in root formation and the understanding of dominance relationships, branching and crown development in trees. 相似文献

Summary We examined seed-mass variation in 39 species (46 populations) of plants in eastern-central Illinois, USA. The coefficient of variation of seed mass commonly exceeded 20%. Significant variation in mean seed mass occurred among conspecific plants in most species sampled (by hierarchical ANOVA), averaging 38% of total variance. For most species, within-plant variation was the larger component of total variance, averaging 62% of total variance. Variation in seed mass among fruits within crops was significant in most species tested.We conclude that variation in seed mass among and within plants is widespread and common. There was little evidence of trade-offs between number of seeds and mean or variance of seed mass, and little correlational evidence of local competition for maternal resources. No consistent ecological (dispersal mode and growth form) correlates of variance of seed mass were evident. 相似文献

Summary The three-dimensional structure of endothelial cells in the hepatic sinusoids of the rat was studied by application of light- and electron microscopy on Golgi-impregnated specimens. A number of endothelial cells could thus be individually delineated throughout the hepatic lobules. The cytoplasm, showing heavy silver deposits, consists of two distinct areas, a thick and thin portion. The thick portion, issuing from the region of the perikaryon, branches and tapers toward the cell periphery. The thin portion, occupying the remainder of the cytoplasm, consists largely of highly fenestrated sieve plates. Some intralobular variation can be noted; the thick portion of the endothelial cells is well developed in the periportal zone, while the cells in the centrilobular zone are relatively rich in thin portions. In addition, the area of distribution of an individual endothelial cell is larger in the centrilobular sinusoids than in the periportal zone. Some endothelial cells also possess unique cytoplasmic processes projecting into the intercellular space between hepatocytes and connecting the sinusoidal walls of neighboring sinusoids. Azotobacter vinelandii was grown diazotrophically in sucrose-limited chemostat cultures at either 12, 48, 108, 144 or 192 M dissolved oxygen. Steady state protein levels and growth yield coefficients (Y) on sucrose increased with increasing dilution rate (D). Specific rate of sucrose consumption (q) increased in direct proportion to D. Maintenance coefficients (m) extrapolated from plots of q versus D, as well as from plots of 1/Y versus 1/D exhibited a nonlinear relationship to the dissolved oxygen concentration. Constant maximal theoretical growth yield coefficients (Y
G) of 77.7 g cells per mol of sucrose consumed were extrapolated irrespective of differences in ambient oxygen concentration. For comparison, glucose-, as well as acetate-limited cultures were grown at 108 M oxygen. Fairly identical m- and Y
G-values, when based on mol of substrate-carbon with glucose and sucrose grown cells, indicated that both substrates were used with the same efficiency. However, acetate-limited cultures showed significantly lower m- and, at comparable, D, higher Y-values than cultures limited by either sucrose or glucose. Substrate concentrations (K

Bloodsmears from 119 yellow baboons (Papio hamadryas cynocephalus) in six groups in Mikumi National Park, Tanzania, and from 189 olive (P.h. anubis) hamadryas (P.h. hamadryas) and hybrid baboons in three groups in Awash National park, Ethiopia showed differing levels of infection with Hepatocystis simiae. 0% to 42% in the Tanzanian groups were carriers of the parasite but none of the Ethiopian baboons was positive. Abstract An artificial osmotic cell has been constructed using reverse osmosis membranes. The cell consisted of a thin film of an osmotic solution (thickness: 100 to 200 μm) containing a non-permeating solute and was bounded between the membrane and the front plate of a pressure transducer which continuously recorded cell turgor. The membrane was supported by metal grids to withstand positive and negative pressures (P). At maximum, negative pressures of up to –0.7 MPa (absolute) could be created within the film on short-term and pressures of up to –0.3 MPa could be maintained without cavitation for several hours. As with living plant cells, the application of osmotic solutions of a non-permeating solute resulted in monophasic relaxations of turgor pressure from which the hydraulic conductivity of the membrane (Lp) and the elastic modulus of the cell (?) could be estimated. The application of solutions with permeating solutes resulted in biphasic pressure relaxation curves (as for living cells) from which the permeability (Ps) and reflection (σs) coefficients could be evaluated for the given membrane. Lp, Ps, and σs were independent of P and did not change upon transition from the positive to the negative range of pressure. It is concluded that the artificial cell could be used to simulate certain transport properties of living cells and to study phenomena of negative pressure as they occur in the xylem and, perhaps, also in living cells of higher plants. 相似文献
