We examined alternative hypotheses for the benefits of footdrummingin the presence of snakes by the banner-tailed kangaroo rat,Dipodomys spectabitis, by testing whether the target of thesignal includes conspecifics, the predator or both. Footdrummingrecorded in the field revealed that rats altered their footdrummingsignatures when drumming at snakes. In playback tests, however,neighbors failed to show any measurable change in behavior tobroadcasts of the snake drumming pattern, but mothers footdrummedsignificantly more than nonmothen in the presence of a tetheredsnake. Gopher snakes, Pituophis melanolsucus affinis, respondedto footdrumming vibrations created by a mechanical thumper.Nonhungry snakes avoided footdrumming, while hungry snakes approachedthe seismic footdrumming. Snakes decreased stalking rates asfootdrumming increased, but they spent more time stalking drummingthan nondnimming rats. We conclude that D. spectabilis footdrumsin individual defense and in parental care, rather than to warnadult conspecfics. Footdrumming deters pursuit by informingthe snake that the rat is alert and the chances of predationare low. We find little evidence that footdrumming startles,confuses, or harasses the snake. Recent debates concerning conflicting hypotheses of higher-level phylogeny such as the sister-group relationships of tetrapods, turtles, birds and snakes, serve as examples in the analysis of the nature of morphological evidence as it is currently used in phylogeny reconstruction. We note a recent shift of emphasis towards ever-larger data matrices, which may come at the cost of detailed character analysis and argumentation. Because the assessment of morphological characters necessarily entails a conceptual element of abstraction, there is also a threat that preconceived notions of phylogeny influence character analysis. Because the test of congruence does not address character analysis in itself, we argue that character hypotheses, i.e. primary conjectures of homology, need to be testable, and potentially refutable, in their own right. We demonstrate the use of classical criteria of homology (topological relations and/or connectivity, in conjunction with the subsidiary criteria of special similarity and intermediate forms) in the test, and refutation, of morphological characters. Sexual dimorphism is usually interpreted in terms of reproductive adaptations, but the degree of sex divergence also may be affected by sex-based niche partitioning. In gape-limited animals like snakes, the degree of sexual dimorphism in body size (SSD) or relative head size can determine the size spectrum of ingestible prey for each sex. Our studies of one mainland and four insular Western Australian populations of carpet pythons ( Morelia spilota ) reveal remarkable geographical variation in SSD, associated with differences in prey resources available to the snakes. In all five populations, females grew larger than males and had larger heads relative to body length. However, the populations differed in mean body sizes and relative head sizes, as well as in the degree of sexual dimorphism in these traits. Adult males and females also diverged strongly in dietary composition: males consumed small prey (lizards, mice and small birds), while females took larger mammals such as possums and wallabies. Geographic differences in the availability of large mammalian prey were linked to differences in mean adult body sizes of females (the larger sex) and thus contributed to sex-based resource partitioning. For example, in one population adult male snakes ate mice and adult females ate wallabies; in another, birds and lizards were important prey types for both sexes. We used a 694 bp length of the mitochondrial ND4 gene from 40 genera to infer phylogenetic relationships among colubroid snakes. The goals of this study were to identify conserved subsets of ND4 sequence data that could be used to address (1) which nominal higher-level colubroid taxa are monophyletic, and (2) the relationships among the monophyletic lineages identified. Use of transversions only proved the most reliable and efficient means of retrieving colubroid relationships. Transversion parsimony and neighbour-joining analyses identify similar monophyletic higher-level taxa, but relationships among these lineages differ considerably between the two analyses. These differences were affected by the inclusion/exclusion of (1) transitions, (2) autapomorphies, and (3) the boid outgroups. Saturation effects among the transitions, uninformativeness of autapomorphies for clustering taxa, and long-branch and base-compositional problems among the boids lead us to regard the tree resulting from transversion parsimony analysis rooted with Acrochordus as the best current estimate of colubroid phylogenetic relationships. However, several aspects of this proposed phylogeny need further testing (e.g. the apparent diphyly of Natricinae is especially controversial). Relationships retrieved using all colubroid taxa are not obtained when sparsely or unevenly sampled experimental subsets of taxa are used instead, suggesting that long-branch problems can severely compromise elucidation of colubroid relationships if limited taxonomic sampling strategies are followed. We discuss the importance of this finding for previous molecular attempts to assess colubroid relationships. Our analyses confirm the historical validity of several nominal colubroid families and subfamilies, establish polyphyly of a few, but generally fail to resolve relationships among the monophyletic taxa we identify. More conservative character information will be required to confidently resolve the last issue. 相似文献

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major contributor to the development of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), whereas the underlying mechanism of cardiorenal HFpEF is still elusive. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of cardiac fibrosis in a rat model of cardiorenal HFpEF and explore whether treatment with Telmisartan, an inhibitor of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), can ameliorate cardiac fibrosis and preserve diastolic function in cardiorenal HFpEF. Male rats were subjected to 5/6 subtotal nephrectomy (SNX) or sham operation (Sham), and rats were allowed four weeks to recover and form a stable condition of CKD. Telmisartan or vehicle was then administered p.o. (8 mg/kg/d) for 12 weeks. Blood pressure, brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), echocardiography, and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging were acquired to evaluate cardiac structural and functional alterations. Histopathological staining, real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and western blot were performed to evaluate cardiac remodeling. SNX rats showed an HFpEF phenotype with increased BNP, decreased early to late diastolic transmitral flow velocity (E/A) ratio, increased left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy and preserved ejection fraction (EF). Pathology revealed increased cardiac fibrosis in cardiorenal HFpEF rats compared with the Sham group, while chronic treatment with Telmisartan significantly decreased cardiac fibrosis, accompanied by reduced markers of fibrosis (collagen I and collagen III) and profibrotic cytokines (α-smooth muscle actin, transforming growth factor-β1, and connective tissue growth factor). In addition, myocardial inflammation was decreased after Telmisartan treatment, which was in a linear correlation with cardiac fibrosis. Telmisartan also reversed LV hypertrophy and E/A ratio, indicating that Telmisartan can improve LV remodeling and diastolic function in cardiorenal HFpEF. In conclusion, cardiac fibrosis is central to the pathology of cardiorenal HFpEF, and RAAS modulation with Telmisartan is capable of alleviating cardiac fibrosis and preserving diastolic dysfunction in this rat model. 相似文献

Little is known of the reproductive biology of the yellow-bellied sea snake (Pelamis platurus), a species widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific and eastern Pacific Oceans. We observed mating, birth, and free-ranging neonates of P. platurus while collecting this snake once a month over 19 months in the Gulf of Chiriquí, Panama. A pair of copulating snakes was netted on the water surface during February. Neonates, which were identified by size, were observed from September to December. Captive females gave birth during September. Neonates born in captivity emerged head- or tailfirst, shed the remnants of the fetal membranes by coiling their body in a circular loop, and then surfaced to breathe. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Objectives: In congestive heart failure (CHF), men are younger, more likely to have reduced ejection fraction (HF-rEF), and to be diabetic compared to women. Despite this, sex differences in oxidative stress have yet to be explored in CHF.Methods: Data from 67 males and 63 females hospitalized for CHF were collected. Static oxidation–reduction potential (sORP), a relative indicator of oxidative stress, and capacity ORP (icORP), a relative indicator of antioxidant capacity, were measured from plasma samples. We examined whether sex modified the relationship between ORP and hospital discharge disposition (poor outcome: death, hospice), along with other demographics, medications, and diagnostic parameters.Results: Males with poor outcomes had higher sORP and icORP values than females (P?0.05). For those with a good outcome, there were no differences between the sexes (P?>?0.05). Males were younger and more likely to have HF-rEF and diabetes. Controlling for these variables did not account for the sex differences in ORP measures. Regardless of sex, higher creatinine was related to higher sORP and icORP, while lower magnesium and potassium were related to higher sORP and icORP, respectively.Discussion: Increases in sORP during CHF are partially affected by sex and acute outcomes, but are also related to variables without sexual biases. 相似文献
