The effects of temperature, light intensity and nutrient depletion on akinete formation in seven strains of planktonic Anabaena spp.: A. mucosa TAC426; A. crassa TAC436; A. spiroides TAC443 and TAC444; A. flosaquae TAC446; and A. ucrainica TAC448 and TAC449 were examined. A Marked Pfft of temperature on akinete formation was observed at 40 μmol photons·m?2·sec?1 and nutrient-sufficient conditions. At 20° C, akinetes did not develop in A. mucosa TAC426, A. crassa TAC436, A. spiroides TAC443, A. flos-aquae TAC446, or A. ucrainica TAC449 but were formed at frequencies of a little over 11% (ratio of filaments with akinetes to total filaments) in A. spiroides TAC444 and A. ucrainica TAC448. None of the strains fmd akinetes or heterocysts at 30° C and 35° C. At lower temperature (10° C and 15° C), akinetes developed in all the strains at maximum frequencies of 13.4–77.4% during the late exponential phase or late exponential to stationary phases of growth. With only one exception, low light or nutrient deletion did not lead to the induction of akinete diferentiation at 20° C. Only akinete formation in A. flosaquae TAC446 was induced by nitrogen deletion with a frequency of 12.1%, similar to that induced by low temperature, but the initiation of akinete formation in the strain was delayed compared to treatment with low temperature. These results show that temperature was the most important environmental factor triggering akinete formation in these species. In A. crassa TAC436 and A. spiroides TAC443 and TAC444, akinetes developed during the late exponential growth phase even though heterocysts were formed at a 100% frequency (ratio of filaments with heterocysts to total filaments) throughout the entire growth phase. In A. mucosa TAC426, A. flos-aquae TAC446, and A. ucrainica TAC448 and TAC449, there was a positive correlation between heterocyst and akinete formation, suggesting that the presence of a heterocyst may play a role in akinete formation. 相似文献

Fertilization (phosphorus and nitrogen) of Kootenay Lake, British Columbia, was begun in 1992 in an attempt to increase food resources for declining stocks of kokanee salmon. In 1992 and 1993, significant changes in diatom abundance, species composition, diversity, and morphology of individual species were observed in the fertilized North Arm in comparison to the unfertilized South Arm. Effects of fertilization were most obvious during the spring. During summer stratification, fertilization did not result in significant changes in total abundance, but changes in species composition were observed. In 1993, with continued fertilization of the North Arm, diatom abundance in both spring and summer was significantly higher than at the same sites in 1992. No significant differences were observed in the unfertilized South Arm. Diatom abundance was significantly correlated with dissolved inorganic nitrogen (positive) and dissolved reactive silica (negative). Diatom assemblages in the fertilized North Arm in both the spring and summer of 1993 were dominated by Asterionella formosa and Fragilaria crotonensis, taxa considered mesotrophic. Abundance of the oligotrophic taxa Rhizosolenia eriensis and Cyclotella michiganiana was higher in the South Arm than in the North Arm. Differences in diatom assemblages between the two arms in both years were further summarized by multivariate statistical analyses. Morphological variations in two small Cyclotella species (C. comensis and C. cf. pseudostelligera) were observed between the fertilized and “control” stations. Species of the diatom genus Pseudo-nitzschia are common in the marine phytoplankton world-wide. Some species of this genus
have been proved to be source of domoic acid (DA), a powerful toxin causing Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP) in humans and
probably mass mortality in sea birds and mammals. Net plankton samples obtained during several cruises and seasons from the
Pacific coasts of Mexico: western coasts of Baja California, Gulf of California, coasts of the tropical Pacific of Mexico
(including the Gulf of Tehuantepec), were analyzed to study the species of the diatom genus Pseudo-nitzschia. Four species
( P. australis, a presumed toxic species, P. fraudulenta, P. lineola, P. pungens) and one former species of the genus, Nitzschia
americana were recorded and studied by light and electron microscopy. The most common species was P. pungens, widely distributed
along the Pacific coasts of Mexico. All other species appeared occasionally and in low relative abundances. The probable misidentification
of P. australis as P. seriata is discussed, as well as the presence of another potentially toxic species, P. delicatissima,
in the Gulf of California. No case of toxicity (ASP) has been fully documented and therefore related to toxic Pseudo-nitzschia
species in the Gulf of California.

We conducted a morphometric study and wall texture analysis on extant and fossil specimens of the planktonic foraminifera Globigerina falconensis plexus. Our global data reveal morphological inconsistencies between fossil and extant populations. Our results are significant as G. falconensis is widely used in palaeoceanographic studies in conjunction with its sister taxon G. bulloides. Morphologically these two species are similar, with the main difference being the distinctive apertural lip present in G. falconensis. We selected cores covering the entire stratigraphic range of G. falconensis, from the early Miocene to current day, spanning sites from high latitudes in the North Atlantic Ocean and the southern Indian Ocean to sites in equatorial regions. The morphology found in the modern ocean is not consistent with the Miocene holotype of Globigerina falconensis Blow described from lower Miocene sediments in Venezuela. A more lobate morphology evolved in the late Miocene, thus, a new name is required for this morphotype, coexisting in the modern oceans with G. falconensis s.s. We thus describe the new morphospecies, G. neofalconensis for the more lobate forms which evolved in the late Miocene and inhabit the modern oceans. Additionally, we report a pseudocancellate wall texture present in the G. falconensis plexus. We use the molecular sequences from the PR2 database to explore the generic attribution of the G. falconensis lineage, confirming its close relationship with G. bulloides and its retention in the genus Globigerina. 相似文献

Eodiaptomus japonicus was collected in the north basin of Lake Biwa, Japan, on six dates from 11 to 25 June 1987. Temporal changes in its vertical
distribution and reproduction indices were small, but those in its abundance were large. Mortality was high in the naupliar
stage I and from copepodid stage III to adult stage. The latter fact and low proportion of females in adulthood suggest heavy

Presence of starved, stationary phase-like zones in biofilms seems to be an important factor for biofilm formation. In this study, roles of rpoS gene in the formation of Escherichia coli biofilms were investigated. E. coli MG1655 wild type (WT) and rpoS mutant (DeltarpoS) strains were used to compare biofilm formation capacity and global gene expression. Even though the DeltarpoS strain could attach and form microcolonies on glass surfaces, it could not establish mature biofilms. DNA microarray analysis revealed that WT biofilms (WBF) showed similar pattern of gene expression with WT planktonic stationary phase, whereas DeltarpoS biofilms (MBF) showed similar pattern of gene expression with WT planktonic exponential phase. Genes involved in energy metabolism (atpIBEFHAG, atpC, cydAB) and flagella synthesis (flgB, flgC, flhD, fliA, fliC, fliY) showed increased expression in the MBF, but not in the WBF. Moreover, genes involved in stress responses (blc, cspG, dinD poxB, wcaF, wcaI, and yfcF) showed increased expression in the WBF compared to the MBF. These results suggested that the rpoS gene contributed in maturation of E. coli biofilms through regulation of global gene expression including energy metabolism, motility, and stress responses. 相似文献

The distribution of copepod species and their nauplii was studied in a narrow, blind channel on an overwash mangrove island offshore of Belize. Copepodids were sampled with a pump at five stations across the channel during a diel cycle. Diel changes of copepodid stages II – VI were marked by horizontal dispersal of Dioithona oculata, the dominant species, from swarms in the prop roots along the shore during the day to the edge of the prop root habitat at night. Migration of copepodids back to the prop roots appeared to be controlled endogenously because change from a night to a daytime age structure began before first light. Mean copepodid stage at subsurface depths in the channel and prop root edge decreased from 4.2 (with 6.0 = all adults) to 2.9 at predawn to 1.1 during day. The oceanic Oithona nana and O. simplex, and the coastal zone O. fonsecae were evenly distributed with depth and distance from shore during day and night, with avoidance of prop root shoreline during day. These species were much less abundant than Dioithona oculata in the prop roots, but of comparable or greater abundance in the channel. Coastal zone Acartia spinata exhibited evidence of swarming. Nauplii, sampled with a 25m plankton net, were dominated by harpacticoid (50%) and cyclopoid (34%) nauplii, which generally were more abundant at 1m than at the surface and more abundant at night than the day. Lagrangian current measurements indicated velocities at ebb tide twice those of flood tide (1.9 vs. 0.8 cm s–1) and a minimal residence time of 5 days, which could result in advection of D. oculata nauplii out of the Lair Channel before their recruitment into swarms as copepodid stage II. Previously reported maximum swimming speeds of swarming D. oculata copepodid stages (2.0 cm s–1) and greater densities in prop roots and near the benthos may help copepodids avoid advection. The swarming behavior and diel horizontal migration (or dispersal) reported for D.
oculata appears analogous to that of limnetic zooplankton, which may swarm among macrophytes along shorelines during the day to avoid visual predators and disperse or migrate away from the shoreline at night. 相似文献

The fatty acid composition of seston (small-size fraction, < 50 m) and of Daphnia galeata, Bythotrephes longimanusand adult individuals of Leptodora kindtii was analysed in the summer of 1997. When comparing the eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) content of seston with Daphnia, Daphnia with Bythotrephes; Daphniawith Leptodora, we found similarities in the dynamics of EPA accumulation, in most cases. The content of EPA in seston was found to be significantly correlated with numerical abundance of small diatoms (r =0.662).Maximally the % EPA increased from seston (traces – 4% of total fatty acids) to Daphnia (traces – 12.2%). Both the lower and upper relative EPA contents were higher in Bythotrephes (10.8–16%), whereas the maximum value was lower in Leptodora (0.4–6.3%) compared to Daphnia. Correlation coefficients between the EPA content of the organisms at different trophic levels were not significant. The existence of species-specific differences in accumulation and /or transformation of polyunsaturated fatty acids in freshwater crustaceans is proposed. 相似文献
