Abstract Hydrogen fluoride treatment of [14C-glycerol]lipoteichoic acid synthesized by growing Streptococcus faecium ATCC9790 in the presence of 1,3[14C]glycerol produced five radioactive, water-soluble products which were identified by chromatographic and analytical techniques to be tetraglucosyl glycerol, triglucosyl glycerol, diglucosyl glycerol, monoglucosyl glycerol and unsubstituted glycerol. The percent composition of each varied modestly from culture to culture and ranged between 7 and 8% for the tetra-, 20.5 and 31.2% for the tri-, 11.3 to 23.5% for the di-, 20.9 to 26.8% for the mono-, and 23.1 to 34.8% for the unsubstituted glycerol. The same glucosylated glycerol compounds could be obtained in an in vitro reaction in which a 30 000 × g particulate enzyme catalyzed the incorporation of [3H]glucose from UDP [3H]glucose into lipoteichoic acid.  相似文献

A salt storage facility has been located adjacent to Fonda Lake since 1953. In February 1981 a core was taken from the profundal sediments of the lake and analyzed to determine the effects of salt perturbation on the diatom community over a 32-year period. Diatom assemblages from different levels were compared using multivariate techniques including cluster analysis and principal component analysis. Shifts in diatom composition related to salinification were revealed most clearly by subdominant taxa. Five distinct groups of diatom taxa were found to correspond with 5 depth intervals. The diatom component of the lake up to 1960 included two groups of taxa which were alkaliphilous and chloride indifferent. A reduction in species diversity beginning in 1960 may indicate a salt effect. By 1968, when diversity reached a minimum, a variety of halophilic taxa (including Diatoma tenue, Navicula gregaria and Synedra fasciculata) attained their highest relative abundances. At the top of the core, diversity increased slightly and some halophilic taxa decreased in relative abundance, which suggests a possible decrease in salt loading to the lake.  相似文献

The control of malate metabolism and stimulation of 1-sinapolyglucose: L-malate sinapoyltransferase (SMT) activity in radish (Raphanus sativus L. var. sativus) cotyledons has been studied. The light-induced and nitrate-dependent activity of SMT catalyzes the formation of O-sinapoly-L-malate via 1-O-sinapoyl--D-glucose. When dark-grown radish seedlings, cultivated in quartz sand with nutrient solution containing NO 3 - as the sole N source, were treated with light, SMT activity increased concomitantly with free malate in the cotyledons. This light effect was suppressed in seedlings grown in a culture medium which contained in addition to NO 3 - also NH 4 + . However, treatment with methionine sulfoximine neutralized this ammonium effect, resulting again in both rapid accumulation of malate and rapid increase in SMT activity. When seedlings grown on NO 3 - nitrogen were subsequently supplied with NH 4 + nitrogen, the accumulated level of L-malate rapidly dropped and the SMT increase ceased. The enzyme activity decreased later on, reaching the low activity level of plants which were grown permanently on NO 3 - /NH 4 + -nitrogen. An external supply (vacuum infiltration) of malate to excised cotyledons and intact seedings, grown on NO 3 - /NH 4 + -nitrogen medium, specifically promoted a dose-dependent increase in the activity of SMT. We have compared the ability of shadegrown clones of Solamum dulcamara L. from shade and sun habitats to acclimate to bright light, as a function of nitrogen nutrition before and after transfer to bright light. Leaves of S. dulcamara grown in the shade with 0.6 mM NO 3 - have similar photosynthetic properties as leaves of plants grown with 12.0 mM NO 3 - . When transferred to bright light for 1–2 d the leaves of these plants show substantial photoinhibition which is characterized by about 50% decrease in apparent quantum yield and a reduction in the rate of photosynthesis in air at light saturation. Photoinhibition of leaf photosynthesis is associated with reduction in the variable component of low-temperature fluorescence emission, and with loss of in-vitro electron transport, especially of photosystem II-dependent processes.We find no evidence for ecotypic differentiation in the potential for photosynthetic acclimation among shade and sun clones of S. dulcamara, or of differentiation with respect to nitrogen requirements for acclimation. Recovery from photoinhibition and subsequent acclimation of photosynthesis to bright light only occurs in leaves of plants provided with 12.0 mM NO 3 - . In these, apparent quantum yield is fully restored after 14 d, and photosynthetic acclimation is shown by an increase in light-saturated photosynthesis in air, of light-and CO2-saturated photosynthesis, and of the initial slope of the CO2-response curve. The latter changes are highly correlated with changes in ribulose-bisphosphate-carboxylase activity in vitro. The plant-communities from habitats of the metallophyte species Minuartia verna and Thlaspi alpestre (T. caerulescens) at sites disturbed and undisturbed by mining are described. Four communities were delineated by cluster and principal component analysis. Group 1 comprised species-poor communities on disturbed non-calcareous soils; group 2, relatively species-rich communities on disturbed calcareous soils; group 3, species-rich communities in the main on undisturbed calcareous soils. Group 4 consisted of species-rich communities with an alpine element, in damp habitats on base-rich soils derived from igneous rocks. Total and exchangeable elements As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were determined for the soils of these sites. Levels of soil Ca, Cd, Pb and Zn accounted for most of the variation along the first axis of the PCA and soil nutrient levels were probably the main predictor along the second.Abbreviations PCA Principal Component Analysis  相似文献

La possibilité de nourrir la punaiseMacrolophus caliginosus Wagner à l'aide de milieux artificiels a été testée. En l'absence de végétal, les témoins nourris avec des ?ufs d'Ephestia kuehniella Zeller ont une survie médiocre et fournisent 33% d'adultes. Avec le meilleur milieu artificiel la survie est comparable à celle des témoins et 21 % d'adultes sont obtenus. Avec ce même milieu, mais en présence de feuille de géranium, la production d'adultes atteint 62%. Les compositions en acides aminés des punaises élevées avec le milieu montrent des écarts inférieurs à 20% par rapport aux témoins. Le développement complet deM. caliginosus nourri à l'aide de milieu artificiel a été obtenu. Le végétal joue un rôle important dans la biologie de ce prédateur.  相似文献

In approaching the taxonomy of Neolithic Man and its phylogenetic relationship to Later Paleolithic Man and Modern Man in China, the statistical methods used here are Penrose's shape distance and PCA (Principal Component Analysis). The scattergram based on principal component scores, combines the dendrogram based on Penrose's shape distance, and takes the male taxonomy into main consideration, but takes the female taxonomy — as a reference only because the differentiations in physical characteristics among male populations generally are rather larger than those among the female populations. Thus according to this scattergram, Neolithic Man in China can be divided into two large groups: the Northern China group, and the Southern China group. The theory is that in Hengzhen there exist some blood mixtures between the Southern China Group and the Northern China Group (especially the third subgroup) of Neolithic Man. Later Paleolithic Man of China — Liujiang and Upper-Cave Man — can also clearly distinguished from the rest of Neolithic Man in China in the scattergram, and can be considered as two different local types of Later Paleolithic Man. So-called “Negro-Australoid” racial traits can themselves be doubtlessly traced back to Later Paleolithic Man of China — Liujiang and Upper-cave Man. These traits are the intrinsic characteristics of Neolithic Man in China and only then is there slight difference in the extent of the manifestation of these traits in the population.  相似文献

Summary Plants of the cerrado tree species Qualea grandiflora and the annual herb Bidens gardneri were grown from seed in controlled environment rooms at 30/20° C and 12 hour photoperiod. Seedlings were grown in pots or small tubes containing sand and provided with various amounts of mineral solutions based on the formulation of Hoagland and Arnon but with the phosphate content modified in some cases. In a long-term experiment lasting 213 days, plants supplied with full strength Hoagland's solution all died but plants of Qualea given 1/10 strength solution survived, although they grew very slowly. Low relative growth rates (0.008–0.036 d–1) were also a feature of other experiments with Qualea and calculated rates of net assimilation rate gave values of 3–7 mg CO2 dm–2 h–1. Expansion of the photosynthetic surface proceeded slowly and the cotyledons were the main site of photosynthesis for more than 40 days. The low rates of growth occurred despite significant uptake of phosphorus by young plants and in shortterm experiments growth was independent of the amount of phosphate supplied and accumulated. In contrast, the values of R found for plants of Bidens reached 0.24 d–1. Growth of young plants was dependent on the external supply of phosphorus, being reduced when this was low and also when it was very high. Growth of the photosynthetic surface was also much more rapid than for Qualea and also varied with supply of phosphorus. The results are discussed in the context of the occurrence of these species in the Cerrado.  相似文献
