The Tale-Zang Formation in Zagros Mountains (south-west Iran) is a Lower to Middle Eocene carbonate sequence. Carbonate sequences of the Tale-Zang Formation consist mainly of large benthic foraminifera (e.g. Nummulites and Alveolina), along with other skeletal and non-skeletal components. Water depth during deposition of the formation was determined based on the variation and types of benthic foraminifera, and other components in different facies. Microfacies analysis led to the recognition of ten microfacies that are related to four facies belts such as tidal flat, lagoon, shoal and open marine. An absence of turbidite deposits, reefal facies, gradual facies changes and widespread tidal flat deposits indicate that the Tale-Zang Formation was deposited in a carbonate ramp environment. Due to the great diversity and abundance of larger benthic foraminifera, this carbonate ramp is referred to as a “foraminifera-dominated carbonate ramp system”. Based on the field observations, microfacies analysis and sequence stratigraphic studies, three third-order sequences in the Langar type section and one third-order sequence in the Kialo section were identified. These depositional sequences have been separated by both type-1 and type-2 sequence boundaries. The transgressive systems tracts of sequences show a gradual upward increase in perforate foraminifera, whereas the highstand systems tracts of sequences contain predominantly imperforate foraminifera.  相似文献

The diversity and distribution of modern benthic foraminifera has been extensively studied in order to aid the paleoecological interpretation of their fossil record. Traditionally, foraminiferal species are identified based on morphological characters of their organic, agglutinated or calcareous tests. Recently, however, new molecular techniques based on analysis of DNA sequences have been introduced to study the genetic variation in foraminifera. Although the number of species for which DNA sequence data exist is still very limited, it appears that morphology-based studies largely underestimated foraminiferal diversity. Here, we present two examples of the use of DNA sequences to examine the diversity of benthic foraminifera. The first case deals with molecular and morphological variations in the well-known and common calcareous genus Ammonia. The second case presents molecular diversity in the poorly documented group of monothalamous (single-chambered) foraminifera. Both examples perfectly illustrate high cryptic diversity revealed in almost all molecular studies. Molecular results also confirm that the majority of foraminiferal species have a restricted geographic distribution and that globally distributed species are rare. This is in opposition to the theory that biogeography has no impact on the diversity of small-sized eukaryotes. At least in the case of foraminifera, size does not seem to have a main impact on dispersal capacities. However, the factors responsible for the dispersal of foraminiferal species and the extension of their geographic ranges remain largely unknown. Abundance, isotopic composition and morphological imprints of the planktonic foraminifera Globorotalia scitula (Brady) were closely examined for possible use as a novel reconstruction tool of chemical environments in sub-intermediate depth seawater in the past. Based on the MOCNES plankton tow observation of dwelling depths of G. scitula and the isotopic compositions together with hydrochemistry data, the empirical relations between isotopic disequilibria in carbon (Δδ13C=δ13CG. scitulaδ13CDIC) and oxygen (Δδ18O=δ18OG. scitulaδ18Ow) isotopes in the carbonate tests and the seawater δ18O and δ13C of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), respectively, are introduced. The morphological information such as pore density and porosity is also examined for significant relations to carbonate chemistry. Shell porosity is strongly correlated saturation state of calcite. The dissolution of living G. scitula tests may promote the observed isotopic differences as well as the increases in porosity. Δδ18O of G. scitula is found effectively to be linear function of both water temperature and calcite saturation state (Ω), and thereby temperature equation for G. scitula is provided, while Δδ13C of G. scitula is a linear function of only calcite saturation state. The equation was validated by using Globorotalia scitula collected by a sediment trap in intermediate water depths. Satisfactory agreements were found between observed and calculated Δδ18O from the empirical equations based on temperature and hydrochemistry data at sediment trap deployment site, indicating that the equation may be useful in paleo-environmental reconstruction of sub-intermediate water. The sediment trap observation further suggests that the abundance of G. scitula does not necessarily correspond to surface water productivity and to POC flux, but instead, it correlates well with the supply of fine organic matter, which appears to be a result of water convection. Thus, G. scitula may be an unambiguous and excellent paleo-environmental recorder for carbonate chemistry and for fine organic matter transport to the depths, if isotopic and morphological observations are combined.  相似文献

A new planktic foraminiferal zonation has been established for the lower Danian, based on some of most expanded and continuous pelagic sections known to date (from Spain, Tunisia and Mexico). This biozonation is considered valid for low and middle latitudes. The maximum stratigraphical distribution of the index-species approximately coincides in all the studied sections. The index-species are abundant and easily recognizable. We propose the following biozones and subzones: Guembelitria cretacea Zone and the Hedbergella holmdelensis and Parvularugoglobigerina longiapertura subzones; the Parvularugoglobigerina eugubina Zone, which is subdivided into the Parvularugoglobigerina sabina and Eoglobigerina simplicissima subzones and the Parasubbotina pseudobulloides Zone with the Eoglobigerina trivialis and Subbotina triloculinoides subzones. A biomagnetostratigraphic correlation and calibration of the stratigraphical ranges of these species suggest that the biohorizons used to define the new biozonation are very isochronous, at least in the geographical areas analysed.  相似文献

In the “Eastern Pontides” (NE Turkey), the intense volcanic activity accompanying carbonate-siliceous sedimentation during the Late Cretaceous period ensured the occurrence of thick volcano-sedimentary sequences. Seventy-one radiolarian species belonging to 26 genera were identified from five stratigraphic sections of the Upper Cretaceous sequences between Trabzon and Giresun areas in NE Turkey. These species were obtained from the lower Turonian–lower Coniacian strata of the Çe?meler Formation, the Coniacian–lower Santonian strata of the Elmal? Dere Formation and the upper Santonian strata of the Ça?layan Formation. Coniacian–Campanian fauna, consisting of planktonic foraminifera Hedbergella, Marginotruncana, Globotruncana, Whiteinella and biserial heterohelicids as well as radiolarians, was recovered from the red pelagic limestones of the Elmal? Dere Formation known as marker horizon.  相似文献

New observations from Yeu Island and the Bay of Bourgneuf on the Atlantic coast of France show that Ammonia beccarii s.s. and Ammonia tepida have different morphofunctional adaptations to their habitats and environments. Adult A. beccarii s.s. may be epiphytic, living on the calcareous alga Corallina officinalis or on the red alga Gigartina acicularis along rocky shores, while A. tepida is endopelic, living in sediments of brackish environments. Rapid 3-D emission of pseudopodia from interlocular spaces on both umbilical and spiral sides of adult A. beccarii s.s. can support its test within the seaweed framework. This behaviour is characteristic of phytal species. Thus, it appears that the major difference between A. beccarii s.s. and A. tepida is the presence of large interlocular spaces on spiral side of the former, corresponding to a potential morphofunctional adaptation to the epiphytic mode of life. We believe that these observations could help to solve the long-lasting A. beccarii problems of specific distinction.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. It is evident from the results obtained by UV spectroscopy and chemical analyses that the pigments of the foraminiferan Allogromia laticollaris are carotene waxes of the xanthophyll type. Since none of the pigments was found in the food organisms, one can exclude the possibility that these pigments are derived from food. The origin of the pigments is discussed.  相似文献

This study evaluates the severity of the poorly known and mostly underestimated foraminiferal extinction during the Frasnian–Famennian biotic crisis and its evolutionary aftermath. During this global event, worldwide, truly plurilocular planispiral (Nanicellidae) and uniseriate, palmate (Semitextulariidae) foraminifera associated with metazoan reefs died out entirely. Highly advanced test morphology such as that of nanicellids did not reappear in the earth's history until the Late Triassic. Moreover, morphotype comparable to that of the Devonian bilaterally flattened and palmate semitextularids appeared again until the Middle Jurassic (Frondicularia, Lagenida). In terms of the degree of test septation and chamber arrangement as well as general test shape, these foraminifera were ‘very far ahead of their time’. In consequence, foraminifera suffered a significant collapse during the F‐F biodiversity crisis, leading to an amazingly long evolutionary time lag in the case of plurilocular foraminifera lasting at least 150 million years.  相似文献

Foraminiferal assemblages have been collected from ten intertidal study areas situated on the east, south and west coasts of the UK. The assemblages display a vertical zonation which indicates that the distribution of foraminifera in these intertidal environments is usually the direct function of altitude with the duration and frequency of intertidal exposure the most important factors. Multivariate analyses separate foraminiferal assemblages into two faunal zones: a high- and middle marsh zone consisting of differing abundances of Jadammina macrescens, Trochammina inflata and Miliammina fusca; and a low-marsh and tidal flat zone dominated by calcareous foraminiferal species, notably Elphidium williamsoni, Haynesina germanica and Quinqueloculina spp. These faunal zones are similar to those in other mid-latitude, cool temperate intertidal environments although there are spatial and temporal variations between areas. The altitudinal ranges of the faunal zones are employed to identify the vertical relationship of the local environment in which the assemblage accumulated to a reference tide level.  相似文献
