Morphological and culture studies were carried out on the genus Scytosiphon (Scytosiphonales, Phaeophyceae) growing in Japan. Morphologies of plurilocular zo-idangia and sporophytic thalli were found to be useful as taxonomic characters. Two types of plurilocular zo-idangial sori were recognized: (i) loosely coherent plurilocular zoidangia without a cuticular layer (loose type); (ii) tightly coherent plurilocular zoidangia with a cuticular layer (coherent type). The sporophytic thallus morphology was different among species in general appearance (tufted or discoid), degree of cohesion of erect filaments, and presence or absence of paraphyses. Two new species are described, Scytosiphon gracilis sp. nov. and Scytosiphon tenellus sp. nov, Scytosiphon gracilis is distinguished from other species by a thin medullary layer, coherent plurilocular zoidangia, no ascocysts associated with plurilocular zoidangia, and Compsonema-like sporophytic thalli. Scytosiphon tenellus is characterized by a thin medullary layer, coherent plurilocular zoidangia, ascocysts among plurilocular zoidangial sori, and Stragularia-like sporophytic thalli. Scytosiphon lo-mentaria (Lyngbye) Link is characterized by a constricted gametophytic thallus, loose plurilocular zoidangia, the presence of ascocysts, and sporophytic thaili identified with Microspongium gelatlnosum Reinke.  相似文献

Planktic foraminifera are unicellular marine organisms able to produce calcareous tests, which can be fossilized and, therefore, can give important information about the geologic record. In this overview a summary of the present knowledge of fossil planktic foraminifera together with the gradual steps from the earliest and pioneering to the more recent studies on this microfossil group, is given. In particular, the criteria at the base of the classification of these organisms from the earlier studies until the present, are described and summarized. An overview of the biostratigraphic schemes based on species first and last occurrences and assemblages from different latitudes and different regions is also given. The evolution and the response of planktic foraminifera to changing environmental condition are summarized from the more primitiveGlobigerina-like Jurassic forms, to the specialized and diversified Cretaceous species, until their dramatic crisis across the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary, their successive recovery in the Paleocene and their evolution toward modern organisms. Finally, an overview is given of the use of planktic foraminifera to reconstruct paleoenvironments from the more simple methods to those implying more sophisticated and recent techniques.   相似文献

There are several hypotheses on the origin and evolution of the earliest Danian planktonic foraminifera. Most experts suggest that they descended from a few opportunist planktonic foraminifera species, mainly of the genera Guembelitria and Hedbergella, which are usually considered to be survivors of the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary mass extinction. Nevertheless, early Danian specimens of Guembelitria and Hedbergella remained morphologically well separated from the associated parvularugoglobigerinids (i.e. Parvularugoglobigerina and Palaeoglobigerina), the first trochospiral planktonic foraminifera appearing after the K/Pg boundary event. The most likely alternative is a benthic origin for the parvularugoglobigerinids, which would be consistent with molecular phylogenetic studies that have suggested several episodes of benthic-planktonic transitions in the evolutionary history of planktonic foraminifera. A review of material from the El Kef section and other Tunisian sections supports the previous hypothesis that the buliminid genus Caucasina is the ancestor of the first parvularugoglobigerinids (i.e. Parvularugoglobigerina longiapertura and Palaeoglobigerina alticonusa), on the basis of similarities in test and apertural morphologies and wall texture. The intermediate morphotypes between caucasinids and parvularugoglobigerinids, which appeared approximately 3–5 kyr after the K/Pg boundary, are assigned to Pseudocaucasina antecessor gen. nov. sp. nov.  相似文献

The carbonate sediments of the Agadir Basin (Morocco) deposited during the Upper Bathonian-Lower Kimmeridgian p.p. interval are rich in agglutinated complex benthic foraminifera. The detailed inventory of several field-sections allows to identify and to describe these benthonic foraminifera, some of them being recorded for the first time in Morocco. They belong to the main genera Archaeosepta, Andersenolina, Praekurnubia, Pseudocyclammina, Everticyclammina, Alveosepta, Kurnubia, Parurgonina, Neokilianina, Labyrinthina and Rectocyclammina. The stratigraphic and paleobiogeographic distribution of these foraminifera seem to be related to the geodynamic events occurring on the Moroccan Atlantic margin during this time-interval. The stratigraphic distribution of the principal species is generally controlled by the occurrence of ammonites, brachiopods and of some foraminifera which are considered as good stratigraphic markers.  相似文献

An elachistacean epiphyte, Neoleptonema yongpilii E.-Y. Lee & I.K. Lee, gen. et sp. nov., is reported from Korean coasts. The plants are distinguished by having unbranched assimilatory filaments with intercalary plurilocular sporangia as well as lateral plurilocular sporangia from the cortex. The new genus differs from the genera Leptonematella P. Silva and Halothrix Reinke by having pod-shaped plurilocular sporangia on the medulla, and from Elachista Duby and Proselachista Y.P. Lee & Garbary by having intercalary plurilocular sporangia and a poorly developed medulla. The phylogenetic relationships of Neoleptonema yongpilii were inferred from the spacer sequences between the genes coding for the large and small subunits of the RuBisCO gene. The new genus is a member of a poorly resolved clade consisting of several genera within the Elachistaceae, within which it is more closely related to Halothrix and Elachista nipponica than to Leptonematella.  相似文献

Summary The unilocular reproductive stages of the brown algaEctocarpus have been examined with the electron microscope. One observation in particular, which is believed to have been made for the first time in Phaeophycean studies, is that the zoospore derived from unilocular sporangia possesses a microanatomy considerably different from that of spores formed by plurilocular sporangia. It is suggested that this difference may have an evolutionary significance and may lead to a better understanding of the life cycle ofEctocarpus.  相似文献

Phenology, morphology, life history and responses to different temperature and photoperiod conditions were studied in Japanese Stypocaulon durum (Ruprecht) Okamura. Erect thalli of the species were collected year-round, but the mature thalli forming either uniloc-ular sporangia or two different types of plurilocular structures (evidently gametangia) on separate thalli were found only in winter. ln culture, an isomorphic life history is suggested for the species, alternating between a sporophyte forming unilocular sporangia and gam-etophytes forming plurilocular macro- (female) and micro- (male) gametangia. Contents of unilocular sporangia were not released, but germinated in situ, developing into erect thalli forming plurilocular gametangia. Macrogametangia released aplanogametes (oospores), but male gametangia appeared to be non-functional, although flagellated cells were once formed in the loc-uli. This is the first report of plurilocular gametangia in the species. Although the species grew well and matured under considerably lower temperature conditions than European Stypocaulon scoparium (L.) Sauvageau, its temperature requirements showed similarity to northwestern Atlantic Stypocaulon species. This supports the notion that northwestern Atlantic Stypocaulon is conspecific with S. durum.  相似文献

1. Some organisms under variable predator pressure show induced antipredator defences, whose development incurs costs and may be associated with changes to later performance. This may be of especial relevance to animals with complex life histories involving metamorphosis. 2. This study examines the effect of predation environment, experienced both during embryonic and larval stages, on palmate newt (Triturus helveticus) metamorphosis. Newt eggs were raised until hatching with or without exposure to chemical cues from brown trout (Salmo trutta), and larval development was monitored in the presence or absence of the cues. 3. Exposure to predator cues during the embryonic stage resulted in higher growth rates at the larval stage, reduced time to metamorphosis and size at metamorphosis. Metamorphs also had narrower heads and shorter forelimbs than those from predator‐free treatments. In contrast, exposure to predator cues during the larval stage did not affect metamorph characteristics. 4. These results indicate that developing embryos are sensitive to predator chemical cues and that the responses can extend to later stages. Reversion of induced defences when predation risk ceased was not detected. We discuss the possible adaptive significance of these responses.  相似文献

A new specimen from the Middle Eocene Evacuation Creek Member of the Green River Formation in northeastern Utah shows a twig with several leaves of Populus wilmattae Cockrell and a fruiting raceme attached. This specimen establishes for the first time the type of fruits borne by P. wilmattae and provides additional characters with which to assess its taxonomic and evolutionary status. An associated seed shows attached placental hairs like those of extant species of Populus. The Green River fossil differs from extant Populus species in having basically palmate leaf venation and in bearing its fruiting axis on a young twig. In other aspects, the fossil species is remarkably similar to the extant species Populus mexicana.  相似文献

Benthic foraminifera are single‐celled eukaryotes that make a protective organic, agglutinated or calcareous test. Some agglutinated, single‐chambered taxa, including Psammophaga Arnold, 1982, retain mineral particles in their cytoplasm, but the selective mechanism of accumulation is not clear. Here, we report the ability of a foraminiferal species to select and accumulate zircons and other heavy minerals in their cytoplasm. In particular, the use of Scanning Electron Microscope coupled with an Energy Dispersive X‐ray microanalysis system (SEM–EDS) enabled a representative overview of the mineral diversity and showed that the analysed Psammophaga zirconia sp. nov. individuals contained dominantly crystals of zircon (51%), titanium oxides (27%), and ilmenite (11%) along with minor magnetite and other minerals. The studied specimens occur in the shallow central Adriatic Sea where the sediment has a content of zircon below 1% and of other heavy minerals below 4%. For that reason we hypothesize that: (i) P. zirconia may be able to chemically select minerals, specifically zircon and rutile; (ii) the chemical mechanism allowing the selection is based on electrostatic interaction, and it could work also for agglutinated foraminifera (whether for ingestion, like Xenophyophores, or incorporation in the test as in many other described taxa). In particular, this aptitude for high preferential uptake and differential ingestion or retention of zircon is reported here for the first time, together with the selection of other heavy minerals already described in members of the genus Psammophaga. They are generally counted among early foraminifera, constructing a morphologically simple test with a single chamber. Our molecular phylogenetic study confirms that P. zirconia is a new species, genetically distinctive from other Psammophaga, and occurs in the Adriatic as well as in the Black Sea.  相似文献

We studied planktic and small benthic foraminifera from the Fuente Caldera section, southern Spain, across the Eocene–Oligocene transition. Benthic foraminifera indicate lower bathyal depths for the late Eocene and earliest Oligocene. Detailed high-resolution sampling and biostratigraphical data allowed us to date precisely layers with evidence for meteorite impact (Ni-rich spinel), which occur in the lower part of the planktic foraminiferal Globigerapsis index Biozone and in the middle part of the small benthic foraminiferal Cibicidoides truncanus (BB4) Biozone (middle Priabonian, late Eocene). Major turnovers of foraminifera occur at the Eocene/Oligocene boundary, only. The impact did not occur at a time of planktic or benthic foraminiferal extinction events, and the late Eocene meteorite impacts did thus not cause extinction of foraminifera. The most plausible cause of the Eocene/Oligocene boundary extinctions is the significant cooling, which generated glaciation in Antarctica and eliminated most of the warm and surface-dwelling foraminifera.  相似文献

Shallow marine calcifiers play an important role as marine ecosystem engineers and in the global carbon cycle. Understanding their response to warming is essential to evaluate the fate of marine ecosystems under global change scenarios. A rare opportunity to test the effect of warming acting on natural ecosystems is by investigation of heat‐polluted areas. Here, we study growth and calcification in benthic foraminifera that inhabit a thermally polluted coastal area in Israel, where they are exposed to elevated temperatures reaching up to ~42°C in summer. Live specimens of two known heat‐tolerant species Lachlanella sp. 1 and Pararotalia calcariformata were collected over a period of 1 year from two stations, representing thermally polluted and undisturbed (control) shallow hard bottom habitats. Single‐chamber element ratios of these specimens were obtained using laser ablation, and the Mg/Ca of the most recently grown final chambers were used to calculate their calcification temperatures. Our results provide the first direct field evidence that these foraminifera species not only persist at extreme warm temperatures but continue to calcify and grow. Species‐specific Mg/Ca thermometry indicates that P. calcariformata precipitate their shells at temperatures as high as 40°C and Lachlanella sp. 1 at least up to 36°C, but both species show a threshold for calcification at cold temperatures: calcification in P. calcariformata only occurred above 22°C and in Lachlanella sp. 1 above 15°C. Our observations from the heat‐polluted area indicate that under future warming scenarios, calcification in heat‐tolerant foraminifera species will not be inhibited during summer, but instead the temperature window for their calcification will be expanded throughout much of the year. The observed inhibition of calcification at low temperatures indicates that the role of heat‐tolerant foraminifera in carbonate production will most likely increase in future decades.  相似文献

Daily measurement of gas exchanges during a complete growth cycle: photosynthesis, transpiration and night respiration in a soil culture of maize. During a complete growth cycle, photosynthesis (P), night-respiration (R) and transpiration (T) have been measured daily for maize (Zea mays L. cv. INRA F7 × F2) in a self-regulating growth chamber. P and T varied according to three different kinetics. During the growing period there was a fast and concomitant variation of both P and T, which could be filled to a power function of time. During the fructification period we observed a linear decrease of P and T. Finally, during the senescence period P decreased to zero, whereas T kept a value higher than the evaporation of the naked soil. In the first two periods, the P/T ratio decreased as leaves aged. From this we could deduce that a slow increase of stomatal resistance (RS) and mesophyll resistance (RM) took place. R increased until the panicle appeared; it remained constant during fructification and then it decreased with senescence. Each nitrogen supply induced a transient increase of R. Finally, a water stress led to a greater decrease of P than of R, but the after effect of water stress disappeared a day later. These results were compared with those obtained in hydroponic conditions.  相似文献

Life-history studies in culture were carried out on Colpomenia sinuosa (Mertens ex Roth) Derbès et Solier and Hydroclathrus clathratus (C. Agardh) Howe (Scytosiphonales, Phaeophyceae) from Japan. These species showed a heteromorphic life-history pattern with an alternation between erect thalli bearing plurilocular zoidangia and prostrate thalli bearing ectocarpoid plurilocular and unilocular zoidangia. Plurizoids released from erect and prostrate thalli developed into prostrate thalli. Unizoids, however, developed into erect thalli. Prostrate thalli produced plurilocular zoidangia in long-day conditions and unilocular zoidangia in short-day conditions at 10-20°C. Prostrate thalli of C. sinuosa formed ascocysts. Germlings of both species did not grow at 5°C.  相似文献

Morphological observations of a minute, filamentous, branched brown alga epiphytic on Sargassum thun‐bergii (Mertens ex Roth) Kuntze were made on material collected at Tsuyazaki (33°48′N, 130°27′E), Fukuoka Prefecture, southern Japan. This alga was assignable to Asteronema rhodochortonoides (Børgesen) Möller et Parodi in having stellately arranged chloroplasts with several pyrenoids grouped in the center, predominantly apical growth, narrow filaments, and elliptical or broadly elliptical plurilocular zoidangia that are apically or laterally formed on upright filaments. A comparison of partial nuclear small subunit rDNA sequences between the Japanese material and A. rhodochortonoides from the Canary Islands showed only two or three nucleotide differences. This supports our assignment of the Japanese material to this species as a first report for the Pacific Ocean. In laboratory cultures, zoids released from plurilocular zoidangia developed into plants with morphology similar to the field‐collected plants. This cycle repeated without production of unilocular zoidangia in our cultures.  相似文献

The microthrix pattern of larvae of Pseudogilquinia thomasi (Palm, 2000) is described for the first time using scanning electron microscopy. The surface ultrastructure of this species consists of three main forms of microtriches: papilliform filitriches, acicular filitriches and quadridigitate to octadigitate palmate spinitriches. The bothria are covered with palmate spinitriches interspersed on some parts with papilliform filitriches. Palmate spinitriches with papilliform, acicular and capilliform filitriches adorn the pars vaginalis and at the anterior part of the pars bulbosa, there is a transition zone in which the palmate spinitriches are replaced by papilliform to acicular filitriches towards the end of the scolex. ANOVA tests with Duncan's post hoc analyses revealed that there are significant differences in the length of spinitriches and their prongs, whether on the surfaces of the bothria or on the surfaces of the scolex peduncle. Callitetrarhynchus gracilis Pintner, 1931 is the second lacistorhynchid species for which surfaces of the segments were examined and the occurrence of large structures called scutes are reported for the first time from this species. There were also significant differences in the base length as well as height of the scutes in different parts of the strobila. In addition to describing the surface ultrastructures of the two lacistorhynchid species, all the available information on the microtriches within the family Lacistorhynchidae is reviewed herein and generic diagnoses related to microtriches are amended. Elevated sea surface temperatures caused by global climate change and increased nutrient concentrations resulting from land runoff both are stressors for calcifying coral reef organisms. Here, we test the hypothesis that increased temperature leads to bleaching in dinoflagellate-bearing foraminifera similar to corals and that increased nutrients through runoff can exaggerate stress on the holobiont. In an experiment manipulating temperatures alone, we have shown that mortality of Marginopora vertebralis increased with temperatures. Most individuals died after 7 days at 34°C, ~5°C above current summer maxima. Survival at 37 days was >98% at 28°C. After 7 days of exposure to 31 or 32°C, photosynthesis of the endosymbionts was compromised, as indicated by several photophysiological parameters (effective quantum yield and apparent photosynthetic rate). In a flow-though experiment manipulating both temperature (three levels, 26, 29 and 31°C) and nitrate concentrations (3 levels, ~0.5, 1.0 and 1.4 μmol l−1 NO3 ), elevated temperature had a significant negative effect on most parameters measured. At 31°C, most photopigments (measured by UPLC) in the foraminifera were significantly reduced. The only pigment that increased was the photoprotective diatoxanthin. Several other parameters measured (maximum and effective quantum yield, O2 production in light, organic carbon contents) also significantly decreased with temperature. Optode-based respirometry demonstrated that the presence of symbionts at elevated temperatures represents a net carbon loss for the host. Growth rates of M. vertebralis and mortality at the end of the experiment were significantly affected by both temperature increase and nitrate addition. We conclude that these foraminifera bleach in a similar fashion to corals and that global sea surface temperature change and nitrate increases are stressors for these protists. Furthermore, this provides support for the hypothesis that management of local stressors elevates resilience of coral reefs to global stressors.  相似文献
