Saiphos equalis , a semi-fossorial scincid lizard from south-eastern Australia, is one of only three reptile species world-wide that are known to display geographic variation in reproductive mode. Uniquely, Saiphos equalis includes populations with three reproductive modes: oviparous with long (15-day) incubation periods; oviparous with short (5-day) incubation periods; and viviparous (0-day incubation periods). No Saiphos populations show 'normal' scincid oviparity (> 30-day incubation period). We used mitochondrial nucleotide sequences ( ND2 and cytochrome b ) to reconstruct relationships among populations from throughout the species' distribution in New South Wales, Australia. Under the phylogenetic species concept, phylogenetic analyses are consistent with the oviparous and viviparous populations of S. equalis being conspecific. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that the long incubation period oviparous lineage is the sister group to all other populations; and that the viviparous populations belong to a cluster of weakly supported clades basal to the short-incubation-period oviparous clade. These clades correspond to variation in reproductive mode and geographic location.  相似文献

Extant apes are similar to one another, and different from monkeys, in features granting them greater range of forearm rotation and greater size of the muscles that produce this motion. Although these traits may have been independently acquired by the various apes, the possibility arises that such features reflect adaptation to the stem behavior of the hominoid lineage. Anticipating that knowledge of forearm rotatory muscle recruitment during brachiation, vertical climbing, arm-hanging during feeding, and voluntary reaching might point to this stem behavior, we undertook telemetered electromyographic experiments on the supinator, pronator quadratus, ulnar head of pronator teres, and a variety of other upper limb muscles in two gibbons and four chimpanzees. The primary rotator muscles of the hominoid forearm were recruited at high levels in a variety of behaviors. As had been suspected by previous researchers, the supinator is usually active during the support phase of armswinging, but we observed numerous instances of this behavior during which the muscle was inactive. No other muscle took over its role. Kinetic analyses are required to determine how apes can execute body rotation of armswinging without active muscular effort. The one behavior that is common to most extant apes, is rare in monkeys, and which places a consistently great demand on the primary forearm rotatory muscles, is hang-feeding. The muscles of the supporting limb are essential to properly position the body; those of the free limb are essential for grasping food. Since the greater range of forearm rotation characterizing apes is also best explained by adaptation to this behavior, we join previous authors who assert that it lies at the very origin of the Hominoidea.  相似文献

Among the stomach contents of 609 individuals of Solea solea and 1104 of S. senegalensis the main food items of S. solea were Corophium spp. and Hediste diversicolor, and of S. senegalensis were Corophium spp., H. diversicolor and Scrobicularia plana. For both species, the importance of larger prey items in the diet, namely H. diversicolor and Crangon crangon, increased with fish size. Feeding activity of S. solea and S. senegalensis increased in spring and summer. Short-term variations were particularly related to the tidal cycle and the two species fed in intertidal areas. Dietary dierences between the two nursery areas reflected prey availability mainly. Although intra- and interspecific length classes overlapped in diet, potential interspecific competition was probably minimized by a dierential habitat use pattern.  相似文献

This paper presents results of field and laboratory studies on mixotrophy in the estuarine dinoflagellate Gyrodinium galatheanum (Braarud) Taylor. We tested the hypotheses that this primarily photosynthetic organism becomes phagotrophic when faced with suboptimal light and/or nutrient environments. In Chesapeake Bay, incidence of feeding of this species on cryptophytes is positively correlated with prey density and concentrations of nitrate and nitrite, but negatively correlated with depth, salinity, and phosphate concentration. Feeding in natural assemblages and cultures increased hyperbolically with light intensity. The stoichiometric proportions of dissolved inorganic P and N (DIP:DIN) at the stations where G. galatheanum was present were far below the optimal growth P:N (1:10). Incidence of feeding was negatively related to the ratio of DIP to DIN, suggesting that P limitation may have induced feeding. Addition of nitrate, or addition of both nitrate and phosphate, inhibited feeding in a natural population, indicating that N limitation may also induce feeding. Ingestion of the cryptophyte, Storeatula major, by cultured G. galatheanum was higher in media low in nitrate or phosphate or both, but moderate rates of feeding occurred in nutrient‐replete cultures. When cells were grown in media with varying concentrations of nitrate and phosphate, N deficiency resulted in greater cellular N and Chl a losses than did P deficiency, but P deficiency stimulated feeding more than N deficiency. Both N and P deficiency, or P:N ratios that deviated greatly from 1:10, result in an increase of cellular carbon content and an increase in propensity to feed. Our results suggest that feeding in G. galatheanum is partly a strategy for supplementing major nutrients (N and P) that are needed for photosynthetic carbon assimilation. Feeding in G. galatheanum may also be a strategy for supplementing C metabolism or acquiring trace organic growth factors, since feeding occurs, although at a reduced rate, in nutrient‐replete cultures.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments with Pacific halibut Hippoglossus stenolepis revealed that hunger level had a significant effect on the first detection of bait, the number of baits located and attacked, the time required to locate and attack baits and handling times. In all cases, feeding motivation and efficiency increased with hunger. Light level influenced general locomotory activity and location and attacks on baits, but not detection or handling times. The effect of light was interactive with fish hunger level. Hungry fish could locate and consume baits in all light levels, ranging from daylight conditions to near darkness (10−8 µmoles photons m−2 s−1), but location, attack and handling times were all significantly elevated in low light conditions, and attack rates were significantly reduced. In the dark, only 50% of the baits were located and only 17% were attacked. Performance metrics were relatively similar among three higher light treatments (10−5, 10−3 and 10−1 µmoles photons m−2 s−1) where bait location and attack were more efficient. Active space and effective area associated with baited fishing gear will vary because hunger and light levels affect variation in bait detection, locomotion and feeding behaviour. Consequently, fishing activity and stock assessments that depend upon bait may be compromised by spatial and temporal variation in prey abundance, time of day, season, depth and other environmental variables that influence feeding motivation and efficiency.  相似文献

In a survey of epigean and cave streams in the São Domingos karst area, 38 species were present in the stream reaches, including 10 characiforms, 19 siluriforms, seven gymnotiforms and two perciforms. One species of Astyanax and the new armoured catfish species Parotocinclus were the most common epigean fishes in São Domingos. The most conspicuous non-troglomorphic cave fishes were Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus , Astyanax sp., Brycon sp. and two species of Imparfinis , with I. hollandi being the most common fish in most caves. São Domingos karst area has the most diverse and abundant Brazilian cavefish fauna, not only in terms of troglobitic species but also in general fish richness, with 22 non-troglomorphic species recorded in caves in addition to five troglobitic ones. Most fishes examined for stomach contents had at least partially full stomachs. The studied fishes were carnivorous, feeding primarily on aquatic insects. Fishes with developed gonads recorded in caves were I. hollandi , Rhamdia quelen , Pseudocetopsis plumbeus , Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus and Cichlasoma araguaiensis , indicating a potential for reproduction in the subterranean habitat.  相似文献

Morphology of the head and mouthparts in Psocoptera was investigated, and revised interpretations for clypeus and maxilla were proposed. The convex plate in the frontal region of the head capsule is the postclypeus, rather than the frons; the galea is clearly differentiated from the stipes and the origin of the stipito-lacinial muscle is partly shifted from the stipes to the base of the galea; the cardo is completely fused with the stipes without any suture or sulcus. Brief discussions on the evolution of piercing and sucking mouthparts and on the phylogeny of Paraneoptera were provided, based on these revised interpretations.  相似文献

Changes in available food and utilized foods for a densely populated guild of animals can uncover periods of niche displacement among particular consumer species or their separate size classes. Dense populations of small fishes and their foods were çensussed for 13 months and studied experimentally in shoalgrass and turtlegrass meadows of Redfish Bay, Texas. Feeding habits were determined with respect to prey availability, and illustrated the extent to which seasonal partitioning of food corresponded to food depletion among these abundant consumers in seagrass meadow food webs. The darter goby, code goby, pinfish, and Gulf pipefish were the most common species throughout the year. Although the darter goby did not show distinct ontogenetic changes in food habits, the code goby, Gulf pipefish, and pinfish demonstrated major ontogenetic progressions of foods selected.Food availability in the seagrass meadows changed seasonally. When major prey such as amphipods were abundant, during spring, many fish species showed high overlap in food use. Regardless of food availability, the code goby and Gulf pipefish fed mainly on amphipods or copepods. The more common darter goby and pinfish seasonally changed their diets with changes in food availability; the darter goby and pinfish were more carnivorous during spring, but they largely consumed epiphytic algae during summer. Cage experiments were used to monitor foods confined with elevated densities of pinfish and darter gobies, relative to control cages at natural overall densities. Prey items in the former cages decreased sharply, with corresponding dietary shifts by these common fishes. During resource depletion, these changes in resource use by these naturally concentrated consumers appeared as temporary partitioning of available resources. This shift occurred during both natural (seasonal) and experimental depletions of food, and appears to result from increased interspecific and intraspecific competition during periods of depleted preferred foods.  相似文献

Degeneration of indirect flight muscles takes place during the first gonotrophic cycle in females. Feeding and mating stimulate egg production and muscle histolysis. Three commercial and six experimental plant growth bioregulators were surveyed for their effect on aphid reproduction when applied to sorghum. Only CCC and PIX had a significant effect on the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum. Application of the commercial bioregulators CCC and PIXR caused about a 50% decrease in aphid reproduction rate when applied to greenbug susceptible sorghum but had little effect when applied to a greenbug resistant sorghum line. Electronic monitoring of aphid probing behavior on CCC treated, greenbug-susceptible sorghum showed a response pattern which was indistinguishable from that normally observed on greenbug resistant lines and was different from that associated with aphid probing behavior on untreated susceptible lines. The isolated pectin content of the CCC treated susceptible sorghum was twice that of the controls and had twice the methoxy content. These results support the argument that pectin is a barrier to aphid-stylet penetration for phloem feeding aphids which probe intercellularly and that manipulation of pectin content and/or structure can be a major factor in host-plant resistance to sap-sucking insects.  相似文献
