Analysis of variations of handling-time inTrichogramma maidis

Variation in handling-time is studied in the association betweenTrichogramma maidis Pintureau & Vœgelé [Hym.: Trichogrammatidae] and one of its factitious hosts: the eggs of the Mediterranean flour mothEphestia kuehniella Zeller [Lep.: Pyralidae]. It is shown that the duration of egg laying behaviour decreases exponentially from the first host egg encountered onwards. This decreasing kinetic, which corresponds to a learning ability, shows a high variability between females, but a mother-daughter regression analysis fails to demonstrate any genetic transmissibility of this learning ability over 2 successive generations. Once the learning is over, there remains a residual variability which is, in part, under genetic control. The possible consequences of these results on the stability of host-parasite associations are discussed.      

Comparison of ordinations and classifications of vegetation data

The methodology of comparing the results of multivariate community studies (resemblance matrices, ordinations, hierarchical and nonhierarchical classifications) is reviewed from two viewpoints: basic strategy and measure employed. The basic strategy is determined by 7 choices concerning the type of results, consensus methods or resemblance measures, hypothesis testing or exploratory analysis, lack or presence of reference basis, data set congruence or algorithmic effects, number of factors responsible for differences among results, and the number of properties considered in the comparison. Included is a brief summary of methods applicable to vegetation studies. Successful artificial insemination in the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) at ueno zoo

Successful breeding of the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) following artificial insemination was achieved at the Ueno Zoo in 2 consecutive years (1985 and 1986). The first cub, born in June 1985, unfortunately died 43 hours after birth from being crushed by the mother panda; the second cub, born in June 1986, has been growing in good health. Electroejaculation and artificial insemination procedures were performed after immobilization with diazepam (0.1 mg/kg) and ketamine HCL (4.0–5.0 mg/kg). Semen of the male panda was collected by electroejaculation using a rectal probe with a diameter of 2.0 cm and with eight rings as electrodes. Stimulation of the male was given with 3 V (30–40 mA) over a 5-sec period with 5-sec intervals. The female panda exhibited estrus between late February and early March in 1985 and also between mid-january and early February 1986. Increased excretion of urinary total estrogen showed coincidentally at maximum behavioral estrus, and a gradual rise of pregnanediol level was followed by artificial insemination. The gestational length for the first pregnancy was 110 days and that of the second 121 days.     

Hemoglobin in Chironomus ramosus (Insecta, Diptera): an electrophoretic study of polymorphism, developmental sequence and interspecific relationship

The larvae of the dipteran insect, Chironomus ramosus, found in Shillong, India, contain eleven (11) hemoglobin (Hb) components of which three are monomers (CI, CIV and CVI) and seven are dimers (CIII, CV, CVII, CVIII, CIX, CX and CXI), while one (CII) exists in both monomeric and dimeric states.Four monomeric components were isolated, purified and partially characterized. The N-terminal amino acids were determined and showed glycine for CI and leucine for the other components (CII, CIV and CVI).Three hemoglobin components were found to be present in all stages of larval development, except the first instar larvae. Some Hb components were synthesized in a particular instar, as revealed by electrophoretic appearance.Electrophoretic mobilities of seven components and N-terminal amino acid residues of two components of Hb were similar in both Chironomus ramosus and Chironomus thummi thummi.     

Consequences of food-attraction conditioning in Helix: a behavioral and electrophysiological study

Food-attraction conditioning is a learning phenomenon by which adult Helix pomatia acquire the ability to locate food through exposure to that particular food. Food-conditioned snails can be distinguished from naive snails during their approach to food. Naive snails keep their tentacles upright — whereas food-conditioned animals bend the tentacles down-ward, in a horizontal orientation, pointed in the direction of the food.Tentacle musculature is innervated by two peritentacular nerves (PTn), each projecting to approximately one hemi-section of the tentacle wall. Stimulating the peritentacular nerves caused the tentacles to bend downward in a manner reflecting the full complement of tentacle movements performed by conditioned snails.The neural correlate of tentacle movements was investigated in isolated ganglion preparations with the posterior tentacles attached. PT nerve activity was recorded while the olfactory epithelia were stimulated with natural food odors. Preparations obtained from conditioned animals responded with a substantial increase in unit activity (mean increase 280%) to stimulation with odor of the conditioned food but not to other odors. Preparations from naive animals did not respond to food odor stimulation. The electrophysiological results demonstrated that plasticity due to conditioning the snails in vivo survived dissection and could be monitored in vitro.Abbreviations ext PTn external peritentacular nerve - int PTn internal peritentacular nerve     

Genomic organization of mouse Dishevelled genes

We report the isolation and characterization of two new genomic loci corresponding to the mouse Dishevelled (Dvl) genes Dvl2 and Dvl3. The Dvl genes are homologs of the Drosophila dsh segment polarity gene, and are involved in the Wnt/wingless signal transduction pathway. Dvl2 and Dvl3 genomic clones were isolated from a mouse 129 strain λFIXII genomic library and have identical exon/intron organization to Dvll. All three Dishevelled genes span 15 exons and 14 introns and have a number of conserved splice junction sites.     

三种鱼类生长激素cDNA基因的结构比较研究

从厦门海区选取３种生长速度不同的鱼类,真鲈、高体Ｓｈｉ、褐菖Ｙｏｕ,由它们的脑下垂体中分别提取出总ＲＮＡ,用逆转录ＰＣＲ方法（ＲＴ－ＰＣＲ）扩增出生长激素ｃＤＮＡ,克隆到ｐＢｌｕｅｓｃｒｉｐｔ载体上的ＥｃｏＲＩ位点,并分别测定了这３种鱼的成熟生长激素ｃＲＮＡ序列。将由这３种序列推导出的氨基酸序列同已知的８种不同科鱼类的生长激素氨基酸序列进行比较,分析它们序列的同源性,结果表明它们间的同源性与这些鱼     

Modified single node culture method—a new micropropagation method for chickpea

Summary Chickpea was micropropagated by axillary shoot proliferation (ASP) and modified single node culture (MSNC) methods. Maximum propagule proliferation occurred on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium enriched with 1–10 μM N⁶-benzyladenine and 0.01 μM α-naphthaleneacetic acid. The propagules were rooted on MS medium containing 1 μM 3-indolebutyric acid and B₅ vitamins. Regenerated plants were fertile and phenotypically similar to control plants grown from seed. The MSNC method was four times more efficient than the ASP method in terms of the number of plants produced per explant.     

Sequence homology and structure predictions of the creatine kinase isoenzymes

Comparisons of the protein sequences and gene structures of the known creatine kinase isoenzymes and other guanidino kinases revealed high homology and were used to determine the evolutionary relationships of the various guamidino kinases. A CK framework is defined, consisting of the most conserved sequence blocks, and diagnostic boxes are identified which are characteristic for anyone creatine kinase isoenzyme (e.g. for vertebrate B-CK) and which may serve to distinguish this isoenzyme from all others (e.g. from M-CKs and Mi-CKs). Modelling the effect of treatment and behavioral change in HIV transmission dynamics

In this paper we analyze a model for the HIV-infection transmission in a male homosexual population. In the model we consider two types of infected individuals. Those that are infected but do not know their serological status and/or are not under any sort of clinical /therapeutical treatment, and those who are. The two groups of infectives differ in their incubation time, contact rate with susceptible individuals, and probability of disease transmission. The aim of this article is to study the roles played by detection and changes in sexual behavior in the incidence and prevalence of HIV. The analytical results show that there exists a unique endemic equilibrium which is globally asymptotically stable under a range of parameter values whenever a detection /treatment rate and an indirect measure of the level of infection risk are sufficiently large. However, any level of detection/ treatment rate coupled with a decrease of the transmission probability lowers the incidence rate and prevalence level in the population. In general, only significant reductions in the transmission probability (achieved through, for example, the adoption of safe sexual practices) can contain effectively the spread of the disease.
