Afropithecus turkanensis, a 17-17.5 million year old large-bodied hominoid from Kenya, has previously been reported to be the oldest known thick-enamelled Miocene ape. Most investigations of enamel thickness in Miocene apes have been limited to opportunistic or destructive studies of small samples. Recently, more comprehensive studies of enamel thickness and microstructure in Proconsul, Lufengpithecus, and Dryopithecus, as well as extant apes and fossil humans, have provided information on rates and patterns of dental development, including crown formation time, and have begun to provide a comparative context for interpretation of the evolution of these characters throughout the past 20 million years of hominoid evolution. In this study, enamel thickness and aspects of the enamel microstructure in two A. turkanensis second molars were quantified and provide insight into rates of enamel apposition, numbers of cells actively secreting enamel, and the time required to form regions of the crown. The average value for relative enamel thickness in the two molars is 21.4, which is a lower value than a previous analysis of this species, but which is still relatively thick compared to extant apes. This value is similar to those of several Miocene hominoids, a fossil hominid, and modern humans. Certain aspects of the enamel microstructure are similar to Proconsul nyanzae, Dryopithecus laietanus, Lufengpithecus lufengensis, Graecopithecus freybergi and Pongo pygmaeus, while other features differ from extant and fossil hominoids. Crown formation times for the two teeth are 2.4-2.6 years and 2.9-3.1 years respectively. These times are similar to a number of extant and fossil hominoids, some of which appear to show additional developmental similarities, including thick enamel. Although thick enamel may be formed through several developmental pathways, most Miocene hominoids and fossil hominids with relatively thick enamel are characterized by a relatively long period of cuspal enamel formation and a rapid rate of enamel secretion throughout the whole cusp, but a shorter total crown formation time than thinner-enamelled extant apes. 相似文献

The theoretical framework based only on the excluded volume forces is not enough to explain the bovine serum albumin partitioning behaviour in aqueous biphasic systems. The goal of this work is to look at the phase separation via the polymer effect on the water structure. Our findings suggest that polyethyleneglycol 600-protein interaction is conducted by van der Waals forces between the hydrophobic surfaces from PEG and protein molecules, which implies the rupture of hydrogen bonds from the structured water in their neighbours. Therefore, the protein will concentrate in the most water-structured phase (polyethyleneglycol) in order to reach the minimal free energy condition. When polyethyleneglycol molecular weight increases, its exclusion from protein surface prevails, thus pushing the bovine serum albumin to the bottom phase. 相似文献

For wild red snapper Lutjanus campechanus , mean otolith increment deposition rate after marking with oxytetracycline dihydrate (OTC) was daily (0.97 increments day−1 ) when growth rates were fast (0.63 mm fork length, L F day−1 ), but were not daily (0.82 increments day−1 ) when somatic growth was slow (0.2 mm L F day−1 ). For reared larvae ( n =8), increment deposition rates were daily (0.99–1.03 increments day−1 ), and growth rates ranged from 0.6 to 0.9 mm L F day−1 . Growth rate affected increment deposition rate as a threshold function, i.e. when growth rate was <0.3 mm L F day−1 , deposition was less than daily, but above this level increment deposition did not exceed a daily rate. As growth rates increased increment widths increased. Examination of a sub-sample ( n =8) of the otoliths from the slowest growing wild fish by scanning electron microscopy did not increase increment counts. Because L. campechanus are late spring-early summer spawners, young fish can expect maximum growth due to warm summer temperatures. We present a marginal value model explaining intraspecific andinterspecific variation of mating systems in nonterritorialungulates. The model takes into account the simultaneous effectsof spatial and temporal distribution of females, female groupsize, male-male competition, female choice, and the operationalsex ratio (i.e., the proportion of estrous females). The modelpredicts that higher numbers of females per group increasesthe average exploitation time of such groups by males. An increasein female group density, operational sex ratio, and age-specificfighting success of males are predicted to reduce the averageexploitation time of female groups, leading to roving of males(i.e., moving between female groups). In contrast, an increasein die female rejection rate of males and in the time spentby males on nonmating activities (i. e., foraging, lying down,ruminating, migrating) are predicted to increase the averageexploitation time of female groups and to favor staying behaviorof males (i.e., defending a female group over a longer periodof time). Consequently, die model predicts that young maleswill tend to be "stayers," whereas middle-aged and old malesare expected to be "rovers." Model predictions were tested widifield data collected on muskoxen Ovibos moschatus in a naturalpopulation in west Greenland. Observed correlations betweenbull exploitation times of cow groups and the six above-mentionedsocial and environmental parameters were all in die predicteddirection and statistically significant in five of die six cases.Overall, 69% of die observed variation in exploitation timeof cow groups by males was explained by die model predictions.Stepwise regression suggested that, of die six parameters, variationin sex ratio (R2 = .56) and time spent on nonmating activities(R2 = .35) had the largest effects on male exploitation time.Also, die observed age-specific variation in bull exploitationtime of cow groups was as predicted. 相似文献

Noncancer risk assessments are generally forced to rely on animal bioassay data to estimate a Tolerable Daily Intake or Reference Dose, as a proxy for the threshold of human response. In cases where animal bioassays are missing from a complete data base, the critical NOAEL (no-observed-adverse-effect level) needs to be adjusted to account for the impact of the missing bioassay(s). This paper presents two approaches for making such adjustments. One is based on regression analysis and seeks to provide a point estimate of the adjustment needed. The other relies on non-parametric analysis and is intended to provide a distributional estimate of the needed adjustment. The adjustment needed is dependent on the definition of a complete data base, the number of bioassays missing, the specific bioassays which are missing, and the method used for interspecies scaling. The results from either approach can be used in conjunction with current practices for computing the TDI or RfD, or as an element of distributional approaches for estimating the human population threshold. 相似文献

The exact timing ofAnguilla japonica spawning was determined from analyses of daily otolith increments in leptocephali collected near a spawning area west of
the Mariana Islands on July 1–18, 1991. The birth dates of the 54 leptocephali examined (10.2 to 30.5 mm in total length)
ranged from May 22 to June 24, 1991, the individuals clearly comprising two age groups, May-born fish (mode May 28) and June-born
fish (mode June 21). The data showed thatA. japonica spawns intermittently during the spawning season, with fixed synchronized timing. Each group of leptocephali collected along
three different north-south transects (131°, 134° and 137°E between 10° and 22°N) comprised both May-born and June-born fish.
The latter were dominant along the easternmost and middle transects, whereas the May-born fish were more abundant along the
westernmost transect. The modal ages of the June-born and May-born fish collected along 137°E on July 1–3 were 13 d and 35
d, respectively, while those of the two age groups collected along 134°E on July 17 and 18 were 28 d and 50 d, respectively.
These data show that the interval between the sampling dates for the two transects (ca. 15 d) corresponded closely to the
differences in modal ages of specimens from the two transects (15 d) for both the May- and June-born fish, and further, that
the difference in modal age between the two age groups (22 d) was the same at both transects. A similar correspondence in
total length was also observed between the two age groups at the above two transects. The findings clearly demonstrated parallel
westward transport by the North Equatorial Current for both the May- and June-born eel leptocephali, which originated from

Objective : The purpose of this study was to examine beliefs regarding reasons for weight gain, likely responses to weight loss relapse, notions of reasonable weight loss, and correlations between beliefs and attitudes in a large nonclinical sample of men and women with obesity. Research Methods and Procedures : Participants were 3,394 white women (n= 1,674) and men (n = 1,720) with obesity who had responded to a survey about body image and eating behaviors conducted by Consumer Reports magazine. Results : Women and men indicated that the most important reasons for their weight gain were lack of exercise and enjoying eating; the least important reason was a need to avoid social or sexual situations. Both groups reported that their most likely response to relapse is to start watching food intake, whereas their least likely response is to ask a friend, spouse, or family member for help. Women rated depression, stress, low self-esteem, and need to avoid situations as more important reasons for their weight gain than did men, and women were more likely to feel terrible and regain as a response to relapse. There was no relationship between an individual's beliefs about weight gain, responses to relapse, or notions of reasonable weight loss. The International Program on Chemical Safety (IPCS), a collaborative program of the United Nations Environment Program, the
International Labour Organization (ILO), and the World Health Organization (WHO), includes the Environmental Health Criteria
(EHC) Program inaugurated in 1973 by WHO. These EHC are integrated evaluations of the human health and environmental risks
from exposure to specific chemicals carried out by a group of international scientists. Boron (B) was evaluated at an IPCS
Task Group (TG) convened in November 1996.
All TGs are convened under WHO rules and procedures. These procedures relate the overall process used to prepare an EHC including
transparency of the process, conflict of interest, the roles of Members and Observers, and the conduct of the TG. The scope
and purpose of an EHC, for an element such as B, and its possible role in national and international chemical safety programs
will be discussed.
In the early 1990s, countries asked that IPCS request TGs to prepare, where data permit, health-based guidance values (GVs)
(both total daily intake and to recommend health-based guidelines for various environmental media). This final evaluation
in an EHC reflects the collective consensus view of the TG Members. To foster the use of consistent methodology by TGs, IPCS
prepared in 1994 an EHC on the methodology for the preparation of GVs for human exposure limits (EHC 170). In developing their
final evaluation, TGs have been asked to consider using this methodology. This was done by the TG on B, and a total daily
intake for humans of 0.4 mg/kg body wt was derived from animal studies of reproductive and developmental effects in rodents
and pharmacokinetic data from both animals and humans. The application of the methodology described in EHC 170 regarding choice
of critical effect and uncertainty factors will be discussed. 相似文献
