Photosynthetic characteristics of detached barley leaves during greening in the presence of SAN 9785
The effects of the pyridazinone compound SAN 9785 on the photosynthetic competence of leaves, on the photochemical activity of isolated thylakoids and on the formation and spectral properties of chlorophyll-protein complexes were studied during a 72-h greening period of detached etiolated leaves of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Horpácsi kétsoros). It was established that i) the photosynthetic capacity of the leaves decreased considerably (by 80 and 90%, as determined by14CO2 fixation and fast fluorescence induction measurements, respectively); ii) the photochemical activity of isolated thylakoids from water to potassium ferricyanide and from dichlorophenol indophenol/ascorbate to methylviologen exhibited only slight reductions when expressed on a chlorophyll basis compared with the control; iii) the slow fluorescence induction curves of the treated leaves demonstrated the presence of a peculiar fluorescence component interrupting the quenching of fluorescence at around 1 min illumination; iv) a shortage of the chlorophyll-protein complex of photosystem I (CPI) occurred with a higher content of the monomer of the light harvesting complex in the thylakoids of treated leaves; and v) the fluorescence spectrum of the CPI band present in treated leaves indicates the destruction of the structural integrity of this complex during isolation from the membrane.Abbreviations Chl

Carotenoid and abscisic acid (ABA) levels were determined in endosperm, embryos and seedlings of wild-type and viviparous (vp) mutants ofZea mays L. Carotenoid concentrations were determined by absorption spectrometry following purification by high-performance liquid chromatography and ABA concentrations by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Lutein and zeaxanthin were the terminal carotenoids in wild-type tissue. The carotenoid profiles ofvp-1 andvp-8 tissue were similar to that of the wild type; invp-2, vp-5, vp-7 andvp-9 carotenogenesis was blocked at early stages so that xanthophylls were absent. Except forvp-1, where the ABA content was similar to the wild type, the ABA content ofvp embryos was substantially reduced, to 6–16% of the corresponding wild type. Thus, the absence of xanthophylls was associated with reduced ABA content, which was in turn correlated with vivipary. Kernels ofvp-8 had a reduced ABA content although xanthophylls were present. Seedlings of carotenoid-deficient mutants rescued from viviparous kernels contained less ABA than did wild-type seedlings grown in the same way. Furthermore, the ABA concentration of such seedlings did not increase in response to water deficit. Conversely,vp-1 seedlings contained normal levels of carotenoids and ABA. Carotenoid-deficient seedlings did not contain appreciable amounts of chlorophyll so that chloroplast development was not normal. Thus ABA-deficiency could be associated with abnormal plastid development rather than the absence of carotenoids per se.Abbreviations ABA

Summary The effect of transverse fragmentation on the segment pattern of the short germ embryo of the locust Schistocerca gregaria has been investigated at two stages subsequent to the formation of the germ anlage. Following fragmentation both anterior and posterior partial embryos were observed, although rarely in a single egg. Anterior partial patterns usually terminated with a segment visible at the time of fragmentation or with the next segment due to appear. Posterior partial patterns began with a wide range of segments depending on the level of fragmentation.Anterior and posterior partial patterns developing in a single egg were usually not complementary and the segments missing sometimes included some segments visible when the embryo was fragmented. Non-complementary patterns resulted following fragmentation in all regions, while complementary patterns only occurred after fragmentation in the visibly-segmented region.The results suggest that following fragmentation isolated posterior portions of the embryo continue to form segments, while isolated anterior regions usually do not. This effect could result from variable damage to an existing pattern of unequally-sized segment primordia, or from the disruption of a process of sequential segmentation in the elongating posterior region of the embryo. The fatty acid composition of constituent phospholipids and the cholesterol content of rat liver plasma membranes were determined subsequent to maternal alcohol ingestion during pregnancy and lactation. The alcoholic group was given a liquid Metrecal diet containing 37% ethanol-derived calories. The control group was pair-fed an isocaloric sucrose/Metrecal diet. Litters were killed for lipid analyses at days 5, 15 and 25 after birth. These studies revealed that the total phospholipid phosphorus was similar and increased significantly with age in both groups. Cholesterol also increased significantly with age in both groups but was greater in the alcoholic pups, resulting in a higher cholesterol/phospholipid molar ratio. While the phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) content increased with age in both groups, that of sphingomyelin decreased. Phosphatidylserine + phosphatidylinositol (PS + PI) was significantly higher in the control group at all ages studied. A consistent increase of C22:6 in phosphatidylcholine (PC), sphingomyelin, PS + PI and in the total phospholipid fraction from alcoholic pups was observed. Although other fatty acid changes were found in PC, PS + PI and sphingomyelin, PE was not affected. These results suggest that specific adaptive changes were induced in the liver plasma membrane lipids of the progeny from alcoholic rats. 相似文献

Summary In south-east Australia, where radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) is grown on sandy soils low in nutrients and short of water, early establishment, and rapid growth to canopy closure lead to increased productivity. At this stage demands for nutrients and water are high, and trees respond vigorously to silvicultural inputs.For several months after transplanting in winter roots are confined within a narrow planting wedge, low temperature restricts new root growth and slows recovery from water stress in plants. From spring, depending upon the configuration and vigour of the roots transplanted, lateral roots extend radially throughout the soil.Although there were small decreases in concentration of roots radially from the stems of very young trees, such spatial differences disappeared between ages 2 and 3, so that rooting density was independent of distance from the stem. The pattern of vertical distribution of lateral roots was not influenced by age and 80–90% of the lateral roots were within the top 30 cm soil. Roots developed rapidly as the trees grew towards canopy closure, but in general the rooting densities of these pines are among the lowest reported for plants. In rapidly growing trees approaching canopy closure, the secondary thickening of the lateral roots was sufficient to double the weight of roots without altering root length.Knowledge about root growth and root configuration during the early phase of plantation development will assist management decisions where intensive silviculture is practiced, and hence ensure the most efficient use of nutrients and water. 相似文献

Larvae of the cockroach Diploptera punctata were reared in isolation, in pairs, or in groups of 8–10. Duration of larval development, age at each ecdysis, weights at birth and ecdyses, and adult head-capsule width were measured. Duration of larval development was longer and adult size was larger in isolated animals than in animals reared in pairs and groups. The effect of isolation on development was more pronounced in males. All females had 4 larval instars, whereas males had 3 or 4 instars. The proportion of males with 4 larval instars was higher among animals reared in isolation. There was no difference in the duration of larval development or adult size between pair- and group-reared animals. The sex of animals in the group did not affect adult size or the duration of larval development. Males which underwent 3 or 4 larval instars had different schedules of moulting. Rates of growth of males of both instar types reared in isolation and pairs were similar. Greater adult weight of isolated animals and 4-instar-type males was a result of their longer duration of larval development. Both a higher rate of growth and longer duration of larval development contribute to the larger adult size of females than males. 相似文献

Summary The ultrastructural organization of the human fetal choroid plexus was assessed with scanning electron microscopy. The membranous modifications of choroidal ependymal cells differ remarkably between 11 and 20 weeks of intrauterine development and suggest a variable functional capacity at different times of ontogenesis. ICR female mice were exposed to either 22 (L11, D11) or 26 hour day (L13, D13) light/dark cycles for at least 2 weeks before mating and/or during pregnancy. The mating rates of these animals decreased considerably. When pregnant females were examined at gestation days 12.0 or 17.5, resorption rates were increased, the embryos weighed less, and development was retarded in the experimental groups with preconceptional exposure to non-24-hour days. We speculate that in mice maternal and paternal pre- and periconceptional environment of daily light/dark cycles is important for normal reproductive efficacy and normal embryonic development during pregnancy. 相似文献
