Rodents have a toothless diastema region between the incisor and molar teeth which may contain rudimentary tooth germs. We found in upper diastema region of the mouse (Mus musculus) three small tooth germs which developed into early bud stage before their apoptotic removal, while the sibling vole (Microtus rossiaemeridionalis) had only a single but larger tooth germ in this region, and this developed into late bud stage before regressing apoptotically. To analyze the genetic mechanisms of the developmental arrest of the rudimentary tooth germs we compared the expression patterns of several developmental regulatory genes (Bmp2, Bmp4, Fgf4, Fgf8, Lef1, Msx1, Msx2, p21, Pitx2, Pax9 and Shh) between molars and diastema buds of mice and voles. In diastema tooth buds the expression of all the genes differed from that of molars. The gene expression patterns suggest that the odontogenic program consists of partially independent signaling cascades which define the exact location of the tooth germ, initiate epithelial budding, and transfer the odontogenic potential from the epithelium to the underlying mesenchyma. Although the diastema regions of the two species differed, in both species the earliest difference that we found was weaker expression of mesenchymal Pax9 in the diastema region than in molar and incisor regions at the dental lamina stage. However, based on earlier tissue recombination experiments it is conceivable that the developmental arrest is determined by the early oral epithelium. 以冷杉精油为香原料 ,调配出复合薄荷型和果香型牙膏香精 ,并运用常规牙膏配方及加工工艺技术 ,开发出泡沫丰富、洁齿力强、香甜爽口、清淡高雅 ,并具有杀菌、消炎等保健功能的冷杉牙膏。按照国家标准 GB8372 - 87要求 ,对冷杉牙膏的质量进行了检测 ,并与其它同类牙膏产品的抑菌作用效果进行了比较 ,结果表明 ,冷杉牙膏是一种优良的绿色保健牙膏 ,具有优良的综合性能 ,完全符合国标要求 ,在某些性能上可与其它同类产品相媲美 ,有进一步中试开发的必要和广阔的应用前景。  相似文献

Most animals concentrate their movement into certain hours of the day depending on drivers such as photoperiod, ambient temperature, inter‐ or intraspecific competition, and predation risk. The main activity periods of many mammal species, especially in human‐dominated landscapes, are commonly set at dusk, dawn, and during nighttime hours. Large carnivores, such as brown bears, often display great flexibility in diel movement patterns throughout their range, and even within populations, striking between individual differences in movement have been demonstrated. Here, we evaluated how seasonality and reproductive class affected diel movement patterns of brown bears of the Dinaric‐Pindos and Carpathian bear populations in Serbia. We analyzed the movement distances and general probability of movement of 13 brown bears (8 males and 5 females) equipped with GPS collars and monitored over 1–3 years. Our analyses revealed that movement distances and probability of bear movement differed between seasons (mating versus hyperphagia) and reproductive classes. Adult males, solitary females, and subadult males showed a crepuscular movement pattern. Compared with other reproductive classes, females with offspring were moving significantly less during crepuscular hours and during the night, particularly during the mating season, suggesting temporal niche partitioning among different reproductive classes. Adult males, solitary females, and in particular subadult males traveled greater hourly distances during the mating season in May‐June than the hyperphagia in July–October. Subadult males significantly decreased their movement from the mating season to hyperphagia, whereas females with offspring exhibited an opposite pattern with almost doubling their movement from the mating to hyperphagia season. Our results provide insights into how seasonality and reproductive class drive intrapopulation differences in movement distances and probability of movement in a recovering, to date little studied, brown bear population in southeastern Europe.  相似文献

To elucidate the roles of fibroblast growth factors (FGF) in tooth development, we have analyzed the expression patterns of fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFR) in mouse teeth by in situ hybridization and studied the effects of FGF-2, -4, -8, and -9 on cell proliferation in vitro by local application with beads on isolated dental mesenchymes. mRNAs of FGFR-1, -2, and -3 were localized by probes specific for the alternative splice variants IIIb and IIIc. The expression patterns of FGFR1, -2, and -3 were completely different, and the two splicing variants of FGFR1 and 2 exhibited different expression domains. FGFR4 was not expressed in the developing teeth. The IIIb splice forms of FGFR1 and -2 were expressed in the dental epithelium during morphogenesis. The IIIc splice form of FGFR1 was expressed both in epithelium and mesenchyme whereas FGFR2 IIIc was confined to the mesenchymal cells of the dental follicle. Both splice forms of FGFR3 were expressed in dental papilla mesenchyme. None of the FGF-receptors was detected in the primary enamel knot, the putative signaling center regulating tooth morphogenesis. This may explain the fact that enamel knot cells do not proliferate, although they express intensely mitogenic FGFs. Beads releasing FGF-2, -4, -8, or -9 proteins stimulated cell proliferation in cultured dental mesenchymes. These data, together with our earlier data on FGF expression [Kettunen and Thesleff (1998): Dev Dyn 211:256–268] suggest that FGF-8 and -9 mediate epithelial-mesenchymal interactions during tooth initiation. During advancing morphogenesis FGF-3, -4, and -9 may act both on mesenchyme and epithelium. Finally, the intense expression of FGFR1 in odontoblasts and ameloblasts, and FGFR2 IIIb in ameloblasts suggests that FGFs participate in regulation of their differentiation and/or secretory functions. The real-time observation of cell movement in acute cerebellar slices reveals that granule cells alter their shape concomitantly with changes in the mode and rate of migration as they traverse different cortical layers. Although the origin of local environmental cues responsible for these position-specific changes in migratory behavior remains unclear, several signaling mechanisms involved in controlling granule cell movement have emerged. The onset of one such mechanism is marked by the expression of voltage-gated ion channels and neurotransmitter receptors in postmitotic cells prior to the initiation of their migration. Granule cells start their radial migration after the expression of N-type Ca2+ channels and the N-methyl-D -aspartate subtype of glutamate receptors on the plasmalemmal surface. Blockade of the channel or receptor activity significantly decreases the rate of cell movement, indicating that the activation of these membrane constituents provides an essential signal for the translocation of granule cells. Another signal that controls the rate of cell migration is embedded in the combined amplitude and frequency components of Ca2+ fluctuations in the somata of migrating granule cells. Interestingly, each phase of Ca2+ fluctuation controls a separate phase of saltatory movement in the granule cells: The cells move forward during the phase of transient Ca2+ elevation and remain stationary during the troughs. Consequently, the changes in the amplitude and frequency components of Ca2+ fluctuations directly affect granule cell movement: Reducing the amplitude or frequency of Ca2+ fluctuations slows down the speed of cell movement, while the enhancement of these components accelerates migration. These findings suggest that signaling molecules present in the local cellular milieu encountered on the migratory route control the shape and motility of granule cells by modifying Ca2+ fluctuations in the soma through the activation of specific ion channels and neurotransmitter receptors. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Little scientific knowledge is available for short-finned pilot whales in the South China Sea (SCS). Here, we integrated historical records, ship-based observation, and satellite-tagging data to investigate ecological and behavioral characteristics of pilot whales in the SCS. Historical records since the 1990s showed the widespread spatial occurrence of pilot whales along the coastal SCS, suggesting that the species may inhabit this region. During our dedicated ship-based surveys (2019–2022) in the SCS, 19 groups of pilot whales were encountered in Xisha-Zhongsha waters, which supported the hypothesis inferred from historical data. We believe that Xisha-Zhongsha waters are important habitats for pilot whales, demonstrated by the large group size (M = 44.7 ± 42.4 SD individuals), the high proportion of recorded maternal groups (17/19), mixed-species associations, and deep-water habitat characteristics. During field surveys, we conducted satellite-tagging experiments on two adult pilot whales, with tracking periods of 35 and 13 days, respectively. Satellite-tracking data provided evidence of possible residency of the tagged whales, as both displayed overlapping ranges and nondirectional movement. This research provides preliminary baseline data on occurrence, distribution, movement, habitat use, and likely residency of pilot whales in the SCS, which can facilitate future research and conservation effort.  相似文献

The behavior of many wild animals remains a mystery, as it is difficult to quantify behavior of species that cannot be easily followed throughout their daily or seasonal movements. Accelerometers can solve some of these mysteries, as they collect activity data at a high temporal resolution (<1 s), can be relatively small (<1 g) so they minimally disrupt behavior, and are increasingly capable of recording data for long periods. Nonetheless, there is a need for increased validation of methods to classify animal behavior from accelerometers to promote widespread adoption of this technology in ecology. We assessed the accuracy of six different behavioral assignment methods for two species of seabird, thick‐billed murres (Uria lomvia) and black‐legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla). We identified three behaviors using tri‐axial accelerometers: standing, swimming, and flying, after classifying diving using a pressure sensor for murres. We evaluated six classification methods relative to independent classifications from concurrent GPS tracking data. We used four variables for classification: depth, wing beat frequency, pitch, and dynamic acceleration. Average accuracy for all methods was >98% for murres, and 89% and 93% for kittiwakes during incubation and chick rearing, respectively. Variable selection showed that classification accuracy did not improve with more than two (kittiwakes) or three (murres) variables. We conclude that simple methods of behavioral classification can be as accurate for classifying basic behaviors as more complex approaches, and that identifying suitable accelerometer metrics is more important than using a particular classification method when the objective is to develop a daily activity or energy budget. Highly accurate daily activity budgets can be generated from accelerometer data using multiple methods and a small number of accelerometer metrics; therefore, identifying a suitable behavioral classification method should not be a barrier to using accelerometers in studies of seabird behavior and ecology.  相似文献
