 Commercial maize (Zea mays L.) in the USA has a restricted genetic base as newer hybrids are largely produced from crosses among elite inbred lines representing a small sample (predominantly about 6- to 8-base inbreds) of the Stiff stalk and Lancaster genetic backgrounds. Thus, expansion of genetic diversity in maize has been a continuous challenge to breeders. Tropical germplasm has been viewed as a useable source of diversity, although the integration of tropical germplasm into existing inbred line and hybrid development is laborious. The present study is an evaluation of the potential of tropical germplasm for temperate maize improvement. All possible single-, three-way-, and double-cross hybrids among three largely temperate and three temperate-adapted, all-tropical inbred lines were evaluated in yield-trial tests. Single-cross hybrids containing as much as 50–60% tropical germplasm produced 8.0 t ha-1 of grain yield, equivalent to the mean yield of the commercial check hybrids. On the other hand, three-way and double-cross hybrids with the highest mean yield contained lower amounts of tropical germplasm, 10–19% and 34–44%, respectively. Overall, hybrids containing 10–60% tropical germplasm yielded within the range of the commercial hybrid checks. Hybrids with more than 60% tropical germplasm had significantly lower yields, and 100% tropical hybrids yielded the least among all hybrids evaluated. The results indicate that inbred lines containing tropical germplasm are not only a useful source to expand the genetic diversity of commercial maize hybrids, but they, also are competitive in crosses with temperate materials, producing high-yielding hybrids. These experimental hybrids exhibited good standability (comparable to the commercial check hybrids) but contained 1–2% higher grain moisture, leading to delayed maturity. Recurrent selection procedures are being conducted on derivatives of these materials to extract lines with superior yield, good standability, and reduced grain moisture which can be used for commercial exploitation. Crude extracts of 44 maize inbred seeds were treated under different temperatures, i. e. 50, 55, 60, 65 and 70℃, in order to determine their heat sensitivity of esterase isozymes. The results showed large discrepancy of heat sensitivity of anodic esterase isozymes between different or same relative mobility bands of isozyme, but similar inactivating temperature (65℃) of the cathodic ones for different inbreds. The heat sensitivity of isozymes for inbreds may be adopted in the identification of variation and purity of inbred and hybrid seeds of maize.  相似文献

The effects of mixing tree species on tree growth and stand production have been abundantly studied, mostly looking at tree species diversity effects while controlling for stand density and structure. Regarding the shift towards managing forests as complex adaptive systems, we also need insight into the effects of structural diversity. Strict forest reserves, left for spontaneous development, offer unique opportunities for studying the effects of diversity in tree species and stand structure. We used data from repeated inventories in ten forest reserves in the Netherlands and northern Belgium to study the growth of pine and oak. We investigated whether the diversity of a tree's local neighbourhood (i.e., species and structural diversity) is important in explaining its basal area growth. For the subcanopy oak trees, we found a negative effect of the tree species richness of the local neighbours, which – in the studied forests – was closely related to the share of shade-casting tree species in the neighbourhood. The growth of the taller oak trees was positively affected by the height diversity of the neighbour trees. Pine tree growth showed no relation with neighbourhood diversity. Tree growth decreased with neighbourhood density for both species (although no significant relationship was found for the small pines). We found no overall diversity-growth relationship in the studied uneven-aged mature forests; the relationship depended on tree species identity and the aspect of diversity considered (species vs. structural diversity).  相似文献

This study obtained information on the biogeographical distribution of lignicolous myxomycetes in temperate regions in Japan. It examined how climatic variables are related to patterns of occurrence in myxomycete communities. Sixty-four taxa were recorded on coniferous wood in 15 forest sites in summer. Common species that were abundant and widely distributed in Japan included Stemonitis axifera, Lycogala epidendrum, and Cribraria cancellata. In addition, Lindbladia cribrarioides was characteristic on dead Pinus densiflora wood in southwestern Japan. The species diversity index (H′) of the myxomycete communities was positively correlated with the annual mean temperature. The distribution of myxomycete communities was analyzed using nonmultidimensional scaling (NMDS). The ecological nature of the gradients expressed by the first two NMDS axes was that the first axis was found to correspond strongly to changes in the average minimum temperature and the latitude, and the second axis was related to a complex of factors, including altitude. The relative abundance of certain species in a myxomycete community on Japanese red pine changed in relation to the annual mean temperature, e.g., Lycogala epidendrum correlated negatively while Stemonitopsis hyperopta did so positively. We conclude that air temperatures can be used to predict the geographical distribution of lignicolous myxomycetes in this temperate region of Japan.  相似文献

Recombinant inbred strains have been used in a number of organisms for segregation and linkage analysis of quantitative traits. One major advantage of the recombinant inbred (RI) methodology is that the genetic identity of individuals within a strain permits replicate measures of the same recombinant genotype. Such replicability is important for traits such as aging inDrosophila, where phenotypic expression is highly influenced by different environmental conditions. RI strain methodology has an added advantage for DNA marker-based linkage analysis of traits measured over the lifespan of the organism. The DNA can be extracted from individuals of the same genotype as those measured in a longevity study. In this paper an argument is presented for the use of a set of recombinant inbred strains to map the quantitative trait loci involved in the aging process inDrosophila. A unique use of a set of stable, transposable moleular markers to trace the quantitative trait loci involved is suggested.  相似文献

Seedlings of nine southern Chilean trees were grown at three nutrient supply rates, to examine the roles of growth rate, biomass distribution and nutrient use traits in determining species natural distributions on resource gradients. Relative growth rate (RGR) showed no overall relationship with species site requirements, although RGR of fertile-site species tended to be more responsive to nutrient supply. In the low-nutrient treatment, infertility-tolerant Fitzroya cupressoides showed a higher RGR rank than a fertility-demanding species (Laurelia philippiana) which outgrew it substantially at the highest supply rate. This reversal of RGR ranks was associated with divergent nutrient use responses: at high nutrient supply both spp. had similar plant nitrogen concentrations (PNC), whereas at the low supply rate Fitzroya’s production of biomass per unit of assimilated N was twice that of Laurelia’s. However, this pattern does not appear to serve as a general explanation of the respective distributions of the study species, as RGR ranks of most species were unaltered by nutrient supply. At low nutrient availability, no clear differences in shoot:root ratio (SRR) were apparent between poor-site and fertile-site species. However, at high nutrient availability, SRR was markedly higher in the latter, resulting from differences in biomass allocation to stems (not leaves). Leaf area ratios (LAR) were higher in fertile-site species than in those tolerant of low fertility, because of differences in specific leaf area rather than leaf weight ratio. Very high LAR at high nutrient supply was characteristic of most shade-tolerant angiosperms, but not of shade-tolerant conifers. Although PNC showed no overall differences between poor- and fertile-site species, sensitivity of PNC to external supply rate was greatest in two infertility-tolerant conifers. In contrast, the angiosperm Weinmannia trichosperma, although tolerant of low fertility, responded to increased nutrient supply with greatly increased RGR and little change in PNC. Results show little trait convergence between conifers and angiosperms in adaptation both to shade and to infertile soils; i.e. fitness of different taxa in a given environment may hinge on different trait combinations. Summary Absorption and accumulation of alkali (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) and alkaline earth (Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) metals were investigated as taxonomic characteristics (in 62 plant species). Leaf and soil samples were collected from 9 sites in temperature forest in Japan and the above mentioned elements were analyzed. Considerable differences were found among species in their ability to accumulate alkali and alkaline earth metals. Very high concentrations of Li (45 ppm, D.W.), K (37×103 ppm), Rb (159 ppm) and Cs (8.2 ppm) were detected inLastrea japonica which were about 412, 12, 27 and 6 times higher than those of the species with the lowest concentrations. Na content was high inAcer micranthum (358 ppm) which was 16 times higher than species with the lowest concentration. Other species containing high levels of alkali metals wereHydrangea macrophylla, Struthiopteris niponica, Clethra barbinervis. Mean discrimination ratio (D.R.) for all investigated plant species for Li, Na, Rb, and Cs to K were 1.7, 0.44, 0.9 and 1.8 respectively. High concentrations of alkaline earth metals Ca (36×103 ppm), Sr (345 ppm), and Ba (241 ppm) were found in the leaves ofHydrangea paniculata which were about 31, 84, and 72 times higher than those for the species with the lowest concentration. Mg was very high inStruthiopteris niponica (83×102 ppm). Other species with high concentrations of alkaline earth metals belonged to the genus Viburnum. Mean D.Rs. for Mg, Sr, and Bavs Ca were 1.0, 0.7 and 0.08. Principal component analysis of interrelationships between the mineral content in leaf tissues indicated that these elements could be classified into 2 groups with respect to their accumulation behavior in plants. The alkali metals K, Li, Rb, and Cs behaved similarly in their accumulation in leaves but Na behaved independently. Alkaline earth metals Ca, Mg, Sr, and Ba were also found to behave similarly in their accumulation. Factors scores of 1st and 2nd components revealed three groups of plant species: alkaliphilic, alkaline earthphilic, and neutral (non-accumulators).  相似文献

In constructing models of species and community distributions along environmental gradients in the Great Smoky Mountains, R. H. Whittaker (1956) focused on old-aged, apparently stable, natural communities. More recent studies indicate that disturbance gradients potentially influence and are influenced by the complex environmental gradients of Whittaker's original models. Using primarily fire and exotic species invasion as examples, this paper shows: 1) disturbance parameters vary along the topographic, elevation and moisture gradients in the Great Smoky Mountains in much the same way as temperature, moisture and solar radiation change; 2) species composition at different locations along the major environmental gradients is partially determined by the disturbance parameter; 3) species characteristics such as mode of reproduction are often correlated with specific disturbance parameters; 4) functional aspects of ecosystem response to disturbance vary along environmental gradients; and 5) man-caused disturbance may vary along environmental or biotic gradients. Since disturbance gradients may parallel physical environmental gradients, the two may be difficult to distinguish. Modification of disturbance frequencies along major environmental gradients may result in slow shifts in the distribution of both individual species and whole communities.Botanical nomenclature follows Radford et al. 本文根据全新世花粉资料,探讨了东北东部温带针阔叶混交林[阔叶红松(Pinus koraien-sis)林]的发展历史。已有资料表明,在距今约10 000年至5 000—4 000年前,即全新世温暖期,阔叶红松林可见于长白山北端和东部海拔800m以上的山地,而在此海拔以下的胝山丘陵,则全为阔叶落叶林所覆盖。在距今5 000—4 000年前,由于气候转凉,松属(Pinus,主要为红松)向低海拔迁移,与阔叶乔木一起形成针阔叶混交林。当时松的种群较现在大。近二、三百年以来,由于人为的干扰,长白山区红松的数量明显地减少。  相似文献

Summary The evaluation of germplasm to identify its potential as a source of new favorable alleles is a time-consuming phase of maize hybrid breeding programs. The objective of this paper was to study the relationship between allozyme diversity and quantitative estimators of the relative number of new favorable alleles for grain yield, present in donor lines but not present in the elite hybrid. Twenty-two maize inbred lines representing heterotic groups from the United States (US) and Yugoslavia (YU) were used as donors to estimate the presence of new favorable alleles for grain yield improvement for the hybrid B73 x Mo17. In a second experiment, a 15-line diallel was grown, and 13 single crosses differing in allozyme relatedness measure (ARM) and heterotic grouping were considered as targets to be improved by the remaining 13 lines. Minimally biased estimates of new favorable alleles for grain yield (G) and ARM values were made for all donor lines within each target hybrid. Donor lines were grouped in four allozyme-pedigree classes for each target hybrid to compare the effect of allozyme diversity with pedigree diversity. Pedigree dissimilarities had significant effects on G estimates. Dissimilar pedigree classes had higher G estimates than similar pedigree classes. Allozyme differences between donor inbred lines and target hybrids had inconsistent effects on G estimates. Significant differences in G estimates among allozyme classes were found for 31% of the target hybrids. Classes with similar allozymes had higher G estimates more frequently than classes with disimilar allozymes.
