We measured thresholds for microwave-evoked skin sensations of warmth at frequencies of 2.45, 7.5, 10, 35, and 94 GHz. In the same subjects, thresholds of warmth evoked by infrared radiation (IR) were also measured for comparison. Detection thresholds were measured on the skin in the middle of the back in 15 adult male human subjects at all microwave (MW) frequencies and with IR. Long duration (10-s), large area (327-cm2) stimuli were used to minimize any differential effects of temporal or spatial summation. Sensitivity increased monotonically with frequency throughout the range of microwave frequencies tested. The threshold at 94 GHz (4.5 ± 0.6 mW/cm2) was more than an order of magnitude less than at 2.45 GHz (63.1 ± 6.7 mW/cm2), and it was comparable to the threshold for IR (5.34 ± 1.07 mW/cm2). The secretion of the skin glands of the ‘orange-thighed frog’ Litoria xanthomera contains seven peptides. One of these is the known hypotensive peptide caerulein. Two new peptides, caerin 1.6 [GLFSVLGAVAKHVLPHVVPVIAEKL(NH2)], and caerin 1.7 [GLFKVLGSVAKHLLPHVAPVIAEKL(NH2)] show antibacterial properties. Two other peptides lack the first two amino acid residues of caerins 1.6 and 1.7 and show no antibacterial activity. The identification of the peptides in Litoria xanthomera confirms that this species is related to Litoria caerula, Litoria gilleni and Litoria splendida but not as closely as those three species are related to each other. © 1997 European Peptide Society and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Autoimmune skin diseases are a group of disorders that arise due to a deregulated immune system resulting in skin tissue destruction. In the majority of these conditions, either autoreactive immune cells or the autoantibodies are generated against self-antigens of the skin. Although the etiology of these diseases remains elusive, biochemical, genetic, and environmental factors such as infectious agents, toxins damage the skin tissue leading to self-antigen generation, autoantibody attack and finally results in autoimmunity of skin. Immune dysregulation, which involves predominantly T helper 1/17 (Th1/Th17) polarization and the inability of regulatory T cells to regress immune response, is implicated in autoimmune skin diseases.The emerging roles of immune cells, cytokines, and chemokines in the pathogenesis of common autoimmune skin diseases like pemphigus, vitiligo, and psoriasis are discussed in this review. The main focus is on the interplay between immune cell network including the innate and adaptive immune system, regulatory cells, immune checkpoints and recently identified tissue-resident memory cells (TRMs) in disease pathogenesis and relapse. We also attempt to highlight on the immune mechanisms common to these diseases which can be targeted for designing novel therapeutics.  相似文献

TAC-Cell is a custom-built somatosensory stimulator that delivers pneumatic cutaneous tactile inputs to virtually any skin target on the body and by virtue of its non-ferrous materials is compatible with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) brain scanners. In this study, we describe the method to measure apparent skin displacement induced by TAC-Cell stimulation of the glabrous surface of the distal phalanx of the index finger. Specifically, we studied the effect of four servo controller input voltages (0.4 V–1.0 V) on resultant skin displacement among eighteen, neurotypical adult male and female participants. A fiberoptic displacement sensor, commonly used in industrial applications, was coupled to the TAC-Cell to measure the glabrous skin?s kinematic response to different stimulus amplitudes. Skin displacement was significantly dependent on stimulus amplitudes and sex (p<0.0001). Power spectrum and kinematic analysis of skin displacement showed that the pneumatic TAC-Cell stimulus consists of a spectrally rich, high velocity signal. In related work, we have shown that this dynamic pneumocutaneous stimulus is highly effective in evoking a cortical brain response for neurodiagnostic applications and somatosensory pathway analysis in health and disease.  相似文献

The pars tensa of the rat tympanic membrane (TM) consists largely of a lamina propria of specialized unbanded collagen bounded on the outer surface by an unusually thin epidermal layer and on the inner surface by a flat, single-cell mucosal layer. The mucosal layer is innervated solely by unmyelinated (C) axons, whereas the cutaneous layer is supplied by both myelinated and C axons. The outer surface differs from general body skin, lacking dermal papillae, hairs, sweat glands, and distinctive dermal corpuscular structures.

Epidermal innervation includes distinctive terminals in the basal layer, unassociated with Merkel cells, and deeper intraepidermal smaller endings containing accumulations of mitochondria and vesicles. The sensory nature of these endings can be inferred by their extensive, but not total, elimination following neonatal capsaicin treatment (a potent neurotoxin for thin sensory fibers) and their preservation following surgical or neurotoxin sympathectomy.

The thin mucosal epithelium displays capillaries and beaded axons close to the free surface of the middle ear. The unmyelinated terminals contain predominantly large, dense-core vesicles (LDCVs). Capsaicin treatment results in extensive elimination of terminals containing LDCVs in surface epithelia. A possible small trophic influence of sensory thin-fiber supply was noted on the development of the epidermal layers. The sensory modalities elicited by natural stimulation of the TM is considered in relation to the pattern of innervation.  相似文献

Purpose: The present work was carried out to determine the effects of ethanolic extracts of Arachis hypogaea and its active ingredient resveratrol on the isolated tail melanophores of the Bufo melanostictus to find the mechanism of skin lightening at the cellular level.

Methods: The tail melanophores of the tadpole B. melanostictus were assayed using the mean melanophore size index and their responses were recorded in presence of various concentrations of the plant extract and its active ingredient along with specific antagonists and potentiator.

Results: Significant skin lightening activity of the extract of A. hypogaea and its active ingredient resveratrol was observed on the tail melanophores of tadpole. The pigment cells responded by distinct aggregation leading to skin lightening, this effect was reversible, as re-immersion in physiological saline made the melanophores return to their normal intermediate state. These melanin aggregating effects were completely blocked by propanolol (beta blocker) and partially blocked by prazosin (alpha blocker) and were also found to be highly potentiated by reserpine.

Conclusion: These studies suggest that the active ingredient of A. hypogaea such as resveratrol can act as a sympathomimetic compound and induce aggregation of melanophores of tadpole B. melanostictus via the induction of beta type of the adrenoceptors. The present study opens new vistas for the use of A. hypogaea and its active ingredient, resveratrol for its clinical application as a nontoxic melanolytic compound for the treatment of hyperpigmentation.  相似文献

Abstract

Ultraviolet (UV) rays cause skin damage. Chronic exposure to UV irradiation causes decreased collagen synthesis, degenerative changes in collagen bundles, accumulation of elastotic material and increased epidermal thickness. Origanum hypericifolium, an endemic Turkish plant, belongs to Lamiaceae family. The main constituents of its oil are monoterpenes including cymene, carvacrol, thymol and γ-terpinene. The effects of undiluted O. hypericifolium oil on UVB irradiated skin of mice were investigated histochemically. Four groups of female BALB/c mice, whose dorsal hair was shaved, were allocated as follows: non-UVB irradiated (Group 1), UVB-irradiated (Group 2), O. hypericifolium oil treated (Group 3), and O. hypericifolium oil treated and UVB irradiated (Group 4). Sections of dorsal skin samples were stained with Mallory's phosphotungstic acid hematoxylin for collagen fibers and Taenzer-Unna orcein for elastic fibers. Sections also were stained with hematoxylin and eosin to measure epidermal thickness. We observed intense staining of collagen and homogeneous, scattered thin elastic fibers in Group 1; scattered and weakly stained collagen and curled, amorphous, accumulate elastic fibers in Group 2; and intense staining of collagen in Groups 3 and 4. Accumulation of elastic fibers in the dermis was unremarkable in Groups 3 and 4. In Groups 3 and 4, O. hypericifolium oil treatment thickened the epidermis. Epidermal thickness was greatest in Group 4. We suggest that O. hypericifolium oil may block UVB induced alterations of collagen and elastic fibers, and increase epidermal thickness.  相似文献

Selective cell death by apoptosis plays important roles in organogenesis. Apoptotic cells are observed in the developmental and homeostatic processes of several ectodermal organs, such as hairs, feathers, and mammary glands. In chick feather development, apoptotic events have been observed during feather morphogenesis, but have not been investigated during early feather bud formation. Previously, we have reported a method for generating feather buds on a bioengineered skin from dissociated skin epithelial and mesenchymal cells in three-dimensional culture. During the development of the bioengineered skin, epithelial cavity formation by apoptosis was observed in the epithelial tissue. In this study, we examined the selective epithelial cell death during the bioengineered skin development. Histological analyses suggest that the selective epithelial cell death in the bioengineered skin was induced by caspase-3-related apoptosis. The formation of feather buds of the bioengineered skin was disturbed by the treatment with a pan-caspase inhibitor. The pan-caspase inhibitor treatment suppressed the rearrangement of the epithelial layer and the formation of dermal condensation, which are thought to be essential step to form feather buds. The suppression of the formation of feather buds on the pan-caspase inhibitor-treated skin was partially compensated by the addition of a GSK-3β inhibitor, which activates Wnt/β-catenin signaling. These results suggest that the epithelial cell death is involved in the formation of feather buds of the bioengineered skin. These observations also suggest that caspase activities and Wnt/β-catenin signaling may contribute to the formation of epithelial and mesenchymal components in the bioengineered skin.  相似文献
