Light utilization efficiency in five species of marine macroalgae was measured in laboratory growth experiments (13–41 days duration) at different irradiances at 7°C. All species acclimated to irradiance by changing their light absorption, resulting in a peak in light absorption between 2 and 15 μmol·m?2.s?1. Light absorption increased with thallus-specific chlorophyll and carbon content according to linear inverse relationships between chlorophyll content (chlarea?1) and log[transmission] and between log[carbon content, Carea?1] and log[transmission]. Quantum yields for light-limited growth and estimated gross photosynthesis were calculated based on incident and absorbed light. Quantum yield for photosynthesis based on light absorbed by pigments was high (mean = 114 mmol C·mol?1 photons) and similar among the species. Quantum yield for net growth based on incident light was also high but more variable, between 22 and 75 mmol C·mol?1 photons. Differences among species were mainly due to differences in light absorption. In conclusion, all species acclimated to low light by increasing light absorption to the maximum attainable, and growth efficiencies based on absorbed light were close to the maximum theoretically possible.  相似文献

Argentine Potamogeton pectinatus L. was grown in The Netherlands under laboratory conditions at four light intensities (50, 100, 150 and 200 µE m–2 s–1), and photosynthetic performance was evaluated after about 1, 2 and 3 months of growth. At these moments, chlorophyll-a and -b and tissue N and P content were also determined. During the growing period, plant lengths and number of secondary shoots were measured. In the field in Argentina, photosynthetic performance of P. pectinatus was also measured at different light intensities created by artificial shading at various times during the growing season. Field and laboratory photosynthetic results were in good agreement. P. pectinatus showed a significant plasticityin its photosynthesis, rather than in morphology. A fairly constant maximum photosynthetic rate with reduced light enabled the plants to maintain netproduction rates rather unaffected at low light intensities. Still, it can be predicted that increasing turbidity from 1–2 m–1 at present to 3 m–1 could lead to a strongly light-limited growth which should reduce the present weed problem considerably. Such a turbidity increase might be achieved by the introduction of a fairly dense bottom-feeding fish population like Common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.).  相似文献

During 1993 the Upper Mississippi River System experienced floods of exceptional magnitude and duration, especially at its more downstream reaches. The flood had widespread effects on the vegetation. Submerged species such as Potamogeton pectinatus significantly decreased in abundance, especially at sites with more severe flooding. However, many species were able to regenerate in 1994 from seeds or storage organs. Emergent species such as Scirpus fluviatilis were similarly affected, but in the upstream reaches were able to regrow in the autumn following the flood and at many sites showed exceptionally high productivity in the following year, probably due to nutrient-rich sediment deposition by the flood. Many tree species were very severely impacted, although Acer saccharinum and Populus deltoides have shown some seedling regeneration on newly deposited sediment beneath stands of mature trees, which would have out-shaded the seedlings if they had not been killed by the flood.  相似文献

Fourteen samples of sago pondweed (Potamogeton pectinatus L.) and associated invertebrates were collected every two weeks over a single season of plant growth in a large monospecific pondweed-bed located in Coyote Hills Marsh (Alameda Co., California, USA), using pull-up samplers that collect plants, epiphytic macroinvertebrates, and microcrustaceans throughout the water column. The macro-invertebrate fauna was dominated by insects, primarily chironomids. Semi-aquatic neustonic taxa, including an aphid and a springtail, were common; this is in contrast with most aquatic plant-invertebrate studies, in which neustonic insects are seldom collected because of sampling bias. Over the entire season, P. pectinatus biomass and the densities of four insect taxa (Anopheles spp. mosquitoes, Hydrellia sp. brineflies, Ademon sp. parasitic wasps, and coenagrionid damselflies) were significantly correlated. These correlations resulted from both similar overall phenologies of the plant and each of the insect taxa, and ecological relationships in which P. pectinatus provides either a specialized habitat or food source. macroinvertebrate numbers were highest in mid-summer, when P. pectinatus forms a dense floating canopy; microcrustaceans were more common during plant senescence in early autumn. Individuals of some taxa may be distributed in proportion to plant biomass; this occurred commonly in damselflies, perhaps as a result of territoriality in these nymphs.  相似文献

The incongruency of diurnally varying resources essential to plants may detrimentally affect plants early in their development as indicated by reduced water use efficiency and carbon gain. Typical diurnal patterns of light and CO(2) availability in a midsized temperate herbaceous or forest gap were simulated in specially designed growth chambers. A sinusoidally varying CO(2) treatment (400 ppm minimum, 800 ppm maximum) approximated the diurnal cycle of CO(2) at the soil surface, while a steady-state CO(2) treatment (600 ppm) with the same average CO(2 )concentration provided a control. Crossed with these two CO(2) treatments were two light regimes, one with 3 h of high light (850 μmol·m·s) in the morning (west side of a gap), and the other with 3 h of high light in the afternoon (east side). All treatments received baseline low light (55 μmol·m·s) for 14 h during the day. Rumex crispus was selected as a model species because of its rosette leaves, which grow close to the ground where diurnal CO(2 )variation is greatest. The relative timing of diurnal variations in light and CO(2) significantly affected seedling water use efficiency, carbon gain, and morphology. Total biomass, photosynthetic rates, daily integrated carbon, water use efficiency, and leaf area were enhanced by morning exposure to high light. Seedlings that were exposed to peak values of light and CO(2) incongruently, i.e., those plants receiving intense afternoon light with diurnally varying CO(2), were detrimentally affected relative to control plants receiving intense afternoon light with steady-state CO(2). The results of this experiment indicate that the incongruent availability of required resources-such as light and CO(2)-can detrimentally affect performance relative to when resources are congruent. Morphological variability of intertidal Chondrus crispus Stackh. fronds along a small open rocky coast was related to wave exposure and emersion. Cluster analysis revealed two well-defined morphologies: filiform and planiform, named the N morphotype and B morphotype, respectively. We propose a rapid method of classifying fronds based on the morphology of the cross section at half the height on the thallus. The N morphotype is characterized by fewer dichotomies per unit length, a circular cross section with a large inner cortex, and narrow fronds. It is abundant at low intertidal and exposed sites. The B morphotype is characterized by more dichotomies, smaller sizes, a subelliptical or flattened cross section, and broad fronds. It is abundant at high intertidal sites in sheltered areas. Regression analysis revealed a major effect of water movements on frond morphology with respect to tidal level, which was more evident at high intertidal levels. No relationships were observed between morphology and life history phases.  相似文献

A simple, nondestructive physical process was developed for routinely isolating the outermost layers from female, male, and sporophyte fronds of Chondrus crispus Stack-house. Yields of pure cuticles from apical segments ranged from 0.74 to 2.35% on a dry weight basis after 5–7 d of culture. These undegraded cuticles were examined by electron microscopy (scanning and transmission electron microscopy), spectroscopy (infrared and X-ray), and chemical means. Cuticles isolated from female or male fronds were characterized by parallel arrays of electron-dense lamellae (typically 6–14) alternating with more electron-transparent regions. The thickness and uniformity of these lamellae provide the physical basis for the iridescence characteristic of C. crispus fronds. Sporophyte fronds are not iridescent. This phenomenon may be explained by the fewer electron-dense cuticular lamellae (usually three to seven) and the fact that these lamellae anastomose freely to form a thin cuticle with a highly irregular substructure. Elements detected by X-ray analysis, in addition to carbon and oxygen, included Mg, Br, S, and Ca in both gametophyte and sporophyte cuticles. Major features of FTIR spectra of all cuticles were absorbances due to proteins. A strong band, indicative of sulfate ester, occurred near 1250 cm?1 in all cuticle preparations. Gametophyte, but not sporophyte, cuticles absorbed at 935, 846, and 800 cm?1 consistent with the presence of kappa and/or iota carrageenan. Amino acid analyses showed that sporophyte and gametophyte cuticles were generally similar in gross composition. All contained proline as the principal residue together with significant amounts of cysteine, methionine, and lysine. Protein contents calculated from these analyses ranged from 37.6 to 44.4% on a dry weight basis as compared to 51.5–56.7% calculated from total nitrogen values. Up to 75% of the cuticle mass was solubilized by sodium dodecyl sulfate-β-mercaptoethanol. Three similar migrating bands were seen in female and male cuticle extracts on sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis; however, none of the three weaker bands from sporophyte cuticles comigrated with those from gametophytes. Chloroform-methanol extraction removed < 3.3% of the cuticle mass, suggesting that lipids were minor components.  相似文献

竹叶眼子菜(Potamogeton malaianus)是长江中下游湖泊沉水植被中的优势种,在野外条件下主要依靠断枝繁殖,很少发现它的实生苗。在实验条件下对竹叶眼子菜进行了种子萌发研究,探讨了萌发基质、温度和光暗周期以及冷藏时间对种子萌发的影响。结果表明,干藏3个月后未处理种皮的种子发芽率极低,撕破种皮后显著地提高了种子发芽率。在水基质条件下,25℃最适宜竹叶眼子菜的萌发,光暗周期对种子发芽率有显著影响。冷藏6个月的种子发芽率最高,8个月时发芽率显著降低,表明竹叶眼子菜的种子不耐贮藏。还讨论了竹叶眼子菜种子休眠与萌发机制的生态学意义。  相似文献

Sequences of the chloroplast trnT-trnF region were analyzed for species of the genus Potamogeton distributed in China to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships. The phylogenetic analyses showed that the genus Potamogeton could be divided into two clades. Eighteen species formed a monophyletic clade while the remaining four formed a second, distinguishable one, supporting the conventional treatment that the genus Potamogeton contains the submerged linear-leaved group and the submerged broad-leaved group. The first clade, which represented the subgenus Potamogeton, could be further divided into two subclades. The second clade, which represented the subgenus Coleogeton, displayed a close phylogenetic relationship with the subgenus Potamogeton and occupied a unique position within the genus Potamogeton. This finding suggested that the treatment of the subgenus Coleogeton, which was once regarded as the genus Stuckenia Börner, may need to be reconsidered. Furthermore, identification of maternal donors of some hybrids was successfully applied based on sequence of maternally inherited chloroplast genome. The female parents of three putative hybrids, P. × malainoides, P. × anguillanus, and P. × orientalis, were proved to be accordant with previous morphological conclusions.  相似文献

The genetic diversity and genetic structure of Potamogeton maackianus A. Benn. in seven lakes of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River were studied using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). The gene flow and genetic relationships between populations were analyzed in combination with the geographic distribution and the river system of the lakes. A total of 112 bands were amplified and 59 bands (52.7%) were polymorphic. Each of the 86 individuals investigated exhibited a unique genotype. The Shannon index was used to measure genetic diversity, and the total genetic diversity was 0.414 and the mean genetic diversity of populations was 0.148. P. maackianus showed a relatively high level of genetic diversity. Analyses of molecular variance (AMOVA) revealed that 63.8% of the total genetic diversity existed among populations and 36.2% within them, which was consistent with the genetic structure computed by the Shannon index: among-population variation and within population variation accounted for 64.4 and 35.7%, respectively. The gene flow among populations was very limited, and genetic isolation among populations occurred even though they were connected through the Yangtze River. Cluster analysis divided the seven populations into two groups, and the genetic relationships among the populations had no obvious association with their geographic distribution, or the historical relations with the river system of the lakes where they occurred. Mantel tests revealed that distance was an important factor affecting the genetic structure in populations. The development history of P. maackianus populations in Honghu Lake had an obvious effect on its genetic structure.  相似文献
