  • 1 Shade management is commonly considered to be an effective pest management strategy for cocoa mirids, yet shade management recommendations are not based on extensive knowledge of the mirid ecology in traditional cocoa agroforests.
  • 2 The main objectives of the present study were an assessment of the impact of shade on the spatial distribution of mirid populations and thus the evaluation of shade management strategies.
  • 3 Mirid densities were measured and shade was characterized for three plots located in three different agroecological zones in the Centre region of Cameroon. Mirid densities generally followed a negative binomial law. Geostatistical procedures were used to characterize spatial distribution of mirid density. Light conditions were assessed using hemispherical photography.
  • 4 Populations of Sahlbergella singularis were highly aggregated in the plots. Semivariance analysis and kriging visualized the spatial dependence of mirid densities. Clearly distinguishable mirid pockets of 20–30 adjacent infested cocoa trees were identified in two of the three plots.
  • 5 The high diversity of shade tree species and the large variability in density and size of shade trees resulted in a considerable heterogeneity of plot light conditions. Percentage transmitted light varied in the range 9.4–80.1% in the most heterogeneous plot.
  • 6 For two of the three plots, mirid pockets were aggregated in those areas where light transmission was highest. In the third plot, relatively high mirid densities and the presence of an alternative host resulted in a more homogeneous distribution. The importance of these findings for improved mirid control is discussed.

The geometrical properties of eggs – such as volume and surface area – have uses ranging from ecological, physiological and morphological studies in birds, to predictions of chick condition in the poultry industry. Although measurements of an egg's length and breadth can be used to approximate its geometry, the coefficients used in these models are specific to the original test population, and intraspecific variation in egg shape means these methods cannot be used reliably beyond that population. Here I present a novel mathematical formula to describe the curvature of a bird's egg that can be used to calculate the shape, volume and surface area of an egg precisely from digital images. Using data from several species I demonstrate that the model has a greater level of accuracy than length‐ and breadth‐based methods, and release the user‐friendly tool for others to use for measuring eggs from digital images.  相似文献

Leaf orientations and light environments were recorded for 40 juvenile Pseudopanax crassifolius trees growing in New Zealand in a partially shaded, secondary forest environment. Efficiencies of interception of diffuse and direct light by the observed leaf arrangments were calculated relative to those of three hypothetical leaf arrangements. Canopy gaps above the study plants were unevenly distributed with respect to azimuth and elevation above the horizon. Our results indicate that photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) received from the sides is more important than that received from directly above. In 33 of the plants leaf orientation was found to be significantly clustered towards one azimuth. The mean azimuth and the mean angle of declination were different for each plant. Leaves were steeply declined, and oriented towards the largest canopy gap at each site. Steep leaf angles reduced interception of direct and diffuse PAR when compared to interception by plant with a hypothetical horizontal leaf arrangement. When compared to a hypothetical arrangement with steep leaf declination and a uniform azimuth distribution, the observed leaf arrangement increased the efficiency of interception of diffuse PAR, but had a variable effect on the interception of direct PAR. Results indicate that the developing leaves of juvenile P. crassifolius orient towards the strongest sources of diffuse light, regardless of their value as a source of direct light. By maximising diffuse light interception while reducing direct light interception, leaf orientation may be a partial determinant of the types of habitats exploited by this species. This study emphasises the importance of considering diffuse light interception for plants growing in partially shaded environments.  相似文献

Several authors have reported on high-sensitivity measurement of oxygen-dependent low-level chemiluminescence (CL) from Maillard reactions (MR), i.e. nonenzymatic amino-carbonyl reactions between reducing sugars and amino acids (also referred to as nonenzymatic browning). Here we report for the first time, that light from Maillard reactions can be seen by the human eye and also can be photographed. In parallel with visual perception and photography CL was monitored by means of a CL-detection programme of a liquid scintillation counter (LSC, single photon rate counting). CL emission spectrum was recorded by a monochromator-microchannel plate photomultiplier arrangement. CL intensity from reaction of 6-aminocaproic acid with D-ribose (200 mg each) in 5 mL H2O at pH 11 at 95°C was high enough for visual perception after adaptation to absolute darkness. Reaction in dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) exhibited strongly enhanced CL (10 mg each in 5 mL were sufficient for visual detection) and could be photographed (15 minutes' exposure, ASA 6400); all characteristics of Maillard specific CL (O2-dependence, no CL from nonreducing sugars, inhibition by sulphur compounds) remained. Visual detection of CL and measurement by LSC were in full concordance. The CL emission spectrum showed two broad peaks at around 500 nm and 695 nm. Fluorescence emission of the brown reaction mixture matched the bluegreen part of the CL emission spectrum. Emission of visible light during Maillard reactions may partly originate from oxygen-dependent generation of excited states and energy transfer to simultaneously formed fluorescent products of the browning reaction.  相似文献

黑颈鹤与草海越冬期间共取食47种植物。莎草科植物是主要食物,占76.54%,栽培植物仅占2.14%。植物地一块茎是黑颈鹤取食的主要部位,占35.14%,其次为秆状茎,花果和叶。块状戏几乎全来自莎草科植物。酸模的种子占全部花果类食物27.54%。比重很大,尤其在越冬前期。我们还对5种主要食物植物或其部位进行了方差分析,得出的结论是食物的性差异是主要的,且非常显著。  相似文献

Abstract. A transition matrix model was used to explore the dynamics, rate and potential extent of changes in landscape vegetation patterns on a southern Texas Prosopis savanna. Transitions between seven vegetation classes were determined for the periods 1941–1960 and 1960–1983 on aerial photographs of three sites. During these periods, the sites were heavily grazed by cattle and were fire-free. Vegetation states assessed in grids of 20 m x 20 m cells superimposed on photographs ranged from grass-dominated to woody plant-dominated. The 1941–1960 period (denoted DRY) was characterized by prolonged drought, whereas annual rainfall during the 1960–1983 period (denoted WET) was typically normal to above-normal. The 1941 landscape consisted of herbaceous zones (6% of cells), woodland (50% of cells) and savanna parkland (44% of cells with grass/woody plant mixtures). The woodland state was the most stable, with probabilities of no change being 0.970 and 0.873 in WET and DRY periods, respectively. The herbaceous state was least stable, with corresponding values of 0.074 and 0.353. Past and future landscape structure was modelled by randomly selecting DRY or WET transitions at 20 year time steps. The model was run under a series of rainfall scenarios where the probability of selecting the WET transition matrix (P[WET]) ranged from 0 (DRY always chosen) to 1 (WET always chosen). Historical records indicate P[WET] has approximated 0.3 to 0.4 in the region. The rate of succession to states of greater woody cover increased as P[WET] increased. Forward simulations based on P[WET] > 0.2 suggest the present landscape is unstable and will develop into a closed-canopy woodland within the next 180 years, assuming the processes operating between 1941 and 1983 continue (e.g. grazing by cattle and lack of fire). Reverse simulations concur with historical observations and projections derived from woody plant growth rates in other studies and suggest that 200 to 300 yr BP these landscapes contained a substantially greater proportion of cells dominated by grassland or grassland with scattered woody plants (43 to 74%) than was present in 1983 (19%). Based upon elapsed time between predicted past and future steady states, succession from open savanna to closed-canopy woodland may occur in ca. 400 to 500 yr for P(WET) ≥ 0.33. Arresting or reversing the projected trend may require changes in climate and/or changes in livestock grazing and land management practices. The approaches employed in this study illustrate how time series maps, aerial photographs and satellite imagery can be analyzed and used to interpret, project and reconstruct local and regional changes in ecosystem structure. Difficulties and limitations associated with the use of Markov chains to model succession are identified and discussed.  相似文献

A simple method of aerial photography was used to investigate annual and between-year changes in surface cover of the floating-leaved plants, Nymphoides peltata, Nelumbo nucifera and Trapa natans, in natural stands in Lake Kasumigaura. Oblique photographs of vegetation were taken with a 35-mm camera with real color film from airplanes between 1983 and 1989. Vegetation maps were traced on the positions after projective transformation to vertical photography. The distribution of the stand of Nymphoides peltata seemed to be restricted to a region of less than 1.5 m water depth. A rise of 1.0 m in the water level after a typhoon in 1986 caused a subsequent decrease in vegetation area of Nelumbo nucifera. The vegetation recovered in shallower regions after one year in 1987. The expansion rate of Nymphoides peltata and Nelumbo nucifera in one direction was in the range 3.8–10.0 m yr-1 and 4.1–20.8 m yr-1, respectively. Nelumbo nucifera, Nymphoides peltata and Trapa natans, having high leaf biomass to total biomass may therefore be more vulnerable to large flood and waves. Fluctuation in water level and spatial difference in water depth may also be important factors determining the vegetation area and survival of Nymphoides peltata, Nelumbo nucifera and Trapa natans.  相似文献

Summary Further evaluation of the kinetic data for Fe3+ removal from isolated differic and monoferric transferrins by the tricatechol ligand 3,4-LICAMS has allowed full characterization of the four microscopic rate constants.
