Common marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus) live in small groups in which, usually, only a single female breeds and all group members provide infant care. When two females breed concurrently, however, they may commonly kill one another's infants, especially during the peripartum period. To investigate the mechanisms underlying infanticide by breeding females, we characterized responses of multiparous females to infants and determined circulating hormone levels in adult females during early pregnancy, late pregnancy, and the early postpartum period. Additionally, we compared the responses of postpartum females to their own infants and infants of other females (unfamiliar infants). Postpartum females were highly maternal toward both their own and unfamiliar infants, and showed no differences in their behavioral or hormonal responses to the two. During both early and late pregnancy, however, these females exhibited longer latencies to initially approach unfamiliar infants and spent less time carrying unfamiliar infants. Moreover, females spent less time carrying unfamiliar infants during late pregnancy than early pregnancy. Most late pregnant females never carried infants, and those that did rejected them quickly. Prolactin concentrations were higher and progesterone concentrations lower postpartum than in early or late pregnancy, while estradiol concentrations, the estradiol-to-progesterone ratio, and cortisol levels were higher during late pregnancy. Within reproductive conditions, however, maternal behaviors were not correlated with hormone levels. These results suggest that maternal responsiveness in marmosets may be attenuated during pregnancy, especially late pregnancy, and this may contribute to infanticide by breeding females.  相似文献

Changes in emotional behavior occur across the reproductive cycle in female rodents, with reduced anxiety found during the postpartum period, but relatively little is known about factors contributing to this decreased anxiety. Using increased duration of time spent in the open arms of an elevated plus-maze as an indicator of reduced anxiety, it was found in a series of experiments that (1) anxiety is significantly reduced in Long-Evans females during the first week of lactation, but not thereafter, (2) relatively recent contact with pups before testing (within 4 h) is necessary for their reduced anxiety, (3) dams that receive only distal sensory cues from pups for the 4 h prior to testing do not show reduced anxiety, (4) the absence of nipples, and therefore a lack of suckling by pups, has no effect on dams' anxiety, (5) cesarean delivery of pups 2 days prior to expected parturition did not alter later anxiety in dams, (6) hypophysectomy during mid-pregnancy or ovariectomy within 24 h after parturition also did not prevent reduced anxiety in dams, and (7) differences in anxiety between lactating and virgin females are greatest 4-8 min after being placed in the plus-maze. Therefore, exposure to their own peripheral hormones through mid-pregnancy is sufficient to prime female rats to show reduced anxiety, but only if they later have recent physical interaction with pups. Furthermore, because suckling and the peripheral hormones released during suckling appear to be unnecessary, decreased anxiety in maternal rats may instead be regulated by the transient intracerebral release of neuropeptides or neurotransmitters while dams receive other types of tactile inputs from their infants.  相似文献

Hormones are an important interface between genome and environment, because of their ability to modify the phenotype. More particularly, glucocorticoids are known to affect both morphological, physiological and behavioral traits. Many studies suggest that prenatal stress (associated with an elevation of corticosterone) has deleterious effects on offspring, an altered physiology resulting in retardation of fetal growth and higher percentage of dead neonates. In this study, we investigate the consequences of an artificial increase of corticosterone in pregnant female Lacerta vivipara on two important fitness components: growth and survival. Do stressed females decrease or enhance offspring survival? In 2000 and 2001, we collected pregnant females from four populations of the Cevennes and kept them in the laboratory until parturition. We applied a corticosterone solution daily onto the backs of some females. A similar solution, but without corticosterone, was applied to the remaining females as a control. Immediately after birth, we measured juveniles' morphological characteristics and released them on the field. In September of the year of release and in May of the following year, we recaptured offspring to estimate growth and survival. The elevation of the corticosterone level in pregnant females L. vivipara had a profound impact on juvenile traits. The size, the body condition and the growth of juveniles were decreased by the corticosterone treatment. In contrast, in male juveniles, survival was higher for juveniles from corticosterone-treated females than from placebo females. Thus, corticosterone does not seem to have detrimental effects on offspring survival, suggesting that it may have an adaptive function.  相似文献

Although factors influencing androgen deposition in the avian egg and its effects on nestling fitness are recently receiving considerable attention, little is known about the potential costs of high testosterone levels in the females. Our study aimed at determining the effect of injections of testosterone (T) in female zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), on clutch size, egg mass, yolk mass, and yolk androgen content. Females were given a single bolus injection of T in a range of doses after laying the first egg. Results show that administration of T negatively affected clutch size; the strength of this effect increased with increasing doses of T. Females injected with the highest testosterone dose showed suppressed oviposition of the third and the fourth eggs. Interestingly, testosterone administration made females produce eggs with relatively large yolks, suggesting that T may mediate the trade-off between number and size of eggs. Testosterone injection resulted in elevated levels of androgen in the eggs, in contrast to control clutches, which showed a decreasing pattern of androgen concentration along the laying sequence. We conclude that high androgen investment in eggs may be limited by physiological requirements of the ovulatory process.  相似文献

It has been suggested that the amount of maternal testosterone allocated into the eggs might be implicated in the process of sex determination. However, recent findings on the effect that female social rank has on the level of egg testosterone suggest that reported associations between male-biased sex ratios and yolk testosterone may represent an indirect hormonal effect mediated by the interdependence among maternal hormones, female social rank, and sex ratio. Here, we report the results of a field experiment in which we manipulated the circulating levels of testosterone in female spotless starlings (Sturnus unicolor) before egg formation. Focal females were controlled in subsequent years to explore possible delayed effects of hormone manipulation on primary sex ratio and social status that could persist because of permanent hormonal change or through hormone-dominance interactions. The results indicate that testosterone-implanted females (T-females) produced significantly more sons than control females (C-females) in the year in which they were manipulated. These differences in offspring sex ratio between T- and C-females persisted in the next 3 years, although no additional hormone treatments were given. These results were not mediated by an eventual effect of testosterone treatment on the quality of the females' mates. A similar proportion of T- and C-females acquired a nest box and bred either in the manipulation year or in Year 1 after manipulation, but T-females tended to be more successful in acquiring a nest box than C-females in Years 2 and 3 after manipulation. These results suggest that added testosterone had a direct role on the acquisition and maintenance of high social rank. Delayed effects of testosterone on primary sex ratio might have been caused by altered endogenous production of T-females. Alternatively, the maintenance of sex ratio differences between T- and C-females long after having being implanted might be attributed to the positive effect that enhanced social rank of T-females has on their circulating testosterone levels.  相似文献

We previously demonstrated that overexpression of S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase (SAMDC) in Xenopus early embryos induces execution of maternal program of apoptosis shortly after midblastula transition, which likely serves as a fail-safe mechanism of early development to eliminate physiologically damaged cells before they entering the gastrula stage. To determine how caspases are involved in this process, we microinjected peptide inhibitors and "dominant-negative forms" of caspase-9 and -1 into Xenopus fertilized eggs, and found that inhibitors of caspase-9, but not caspase-1, completely suppress SAMDC-induced apoptosis. The lysate of SAMDC-overexpressing late blastulae contained activity to cleave in vitro-synthesized [(35)S]procaspase-9, but not [(35)S]procaspase-1, and mRNA for caspase-9, but not caspase-1, occurred abundantly in the unfertilized egg as maternal mRNA. We also found that overexpression of caspase-9 and -1 equally executes the apoptosis, but the apoptosis executed by these mRNAs was only partially rescued by Bcl-2 and rescued embryos did not develop beyond neurula stage. These results indicate that activation of caspase-9 is a key step for execution of the maternally preset program of apoptosis in Xenopus early embryos.  相似文献

The socioeconomic and ethnic characteristics of parents are some of the most important correlates of adverse health outcomes in childhood. However, the relationships between ethnic, economic, and behavioral factors and the health outcomes responsible for this pervasive finding have not been specified in child health epidemiology. The general objective of this paper is to propose a theoretical approach to the study of maternal behaviors and child health in diverse ethnic and socioeconomic environments. The specific aims are: (a) to describe a causal pathway between the utility that women obtain through work outside the home and through child care and disease hazard rates in childhood using an optimization model; (b) to specify the influence of ethnic and socioeconomic factors on model constraints; (c) to use the model as a tool to learn about how different combinations of maternal wage labor and child care time might influence child health outcomes in diverse social contexts; (d) to identify parameters that will require measurement in future research; (e) to discuss research strategies that will enable us to obtain these measurements; and (f) to discuss the implications of the model for biostatistical modeling and public health intervention. Optimization models are powerful heuristic tools for understanding how ethnic, environmental, family, and personal characteristics can place important constraints on both the quality and quantity of care that women can provide to their children. They provide a quantitative appreciation for the difficult trade-offs that most women face between working in order to purchase basic goods that children cannot do without (e.g., food, clothing, shelter, health insurance), and increasing offspring well-being through child care (e.g., training in social skills, affection, protection from environmental hazards, help with homework). Advances in insect transgenesis and our knowledge of insect physiology and genomics are making it possible to create transgenic populations of beneficial or pest insects that express novel traits. There are contexts in which we may want the transgenes responsible for these traits to spread so that all individuals within a wild population carry them, a process known as population replacement. Transgenes of interest are unlikely to confer an overall fitness benefit on those who carry them. Therefore, an essential component of any population replacement strategy is the presence of a drive mechanism that will ensure the spread of linked transgenes. We discuss contexts in which population replacement might be desirable and the requirements a drive system must satisfy to be both effective and safe. We then describe the creation of synthetic Medea elements, the first selfish genetic elements synthesized de novo, with the capability of driving population replacement, in this case in Drosophila. The strategy used to create DrosophilaMedea is applicable to a number of other insect species and the Medea system satisfies key requirements for scientific and social acceptance. Finally, we highlight several challenges to implementing population replacement in the wild.  相似文献
