Sucrose accumulation in sweet sorghum stem internodes in relation to growth   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) stems of different cultivars (NK 405. Keller and Tracy) reveal a different pattern of sucrose accumulation with respect to in-ternodal sugar content and distribution. The onset of sucrose storage is not necessarily associated with the reproductive stage of the plant, as was hitherto assumed, but obviously occurs after cessation of internodai elongation as was postulated for the sugarcane stem. For at least two of the three cultivars, ripening is an internode to internode process beginning at the lowermost culm parts. Intensive growth of the internodes, combined with a high hexose content in stern parenchyma, shows a strong positive correlation (r |Mg 0.94) to the activity of sucrose synthase (SuSy; EC 2.4.13), but not to invertase (EC 3.2.1.26) which is not present as soluble (neutral and acid) or cell wall-bound, salt-extractable enzyme in the three culsivars investigated. Sucrose synthase measured in sucrose cleavage and synthesis direction reveals divergent activity rates and sensitivity towards exogenously applied Mg2+ ions and pH. SuSy activity is connected to the increase of internodai sucrose content in so far as (1) its decline is a prerequisite for the onset of sucrose accumulation and (2) it remains at a constant low level during sucrose storage. Sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS; EC 2.4.1.14) activity in the sorghum stem is low compared to SuSy and uniformly distributed over all inter-nodes. Only source leaves of sorghum show a considerable SPS activity, but neither stem nor leaf SPS reveal a positive correlation to the increase of internodai sucrose content. Sucrose phosphate phosphatase (SPP; EC 3.1.3.24) amounts lo only 24–30% of the respective SPS activity but follows the same distribution pattern. None of the enzymes under study proves to be responsible for the extent of sucrose storage in the stem, so other phenomena such as transport processes within the stern tissue require further investigation.  相似文献

The effects of supplemental Ca2+ supply and NaCl salinity on the ionic relations and levels of proline and other amino acids in the primary root of Sorghum bicolor (cv. Hegari) seedlings were investigated. Two days of exposure to 150 m M NaCl resulted in a 50-fold increase in the proline level in the 0–10 mm root tips of seedlings supplied with 5.0 m M Ca2+, but only a 4-fold increase in seedlings with 0.5 m M Ca2+. In contrast to the high levels of proline in the root tip, proline accumulation was only modest in the expanded tissues of the root. The enhancement of proline accumulation in the root tip of salinized seedlings with the Ca2+ supplement may be related to their more favorable tissue K to Na ratio. Thus, elevated Ca2+ may mitigate the NaCl-induced inhibition of S. bicolor root growth via the maintenance of net K to Na selectivity and the enhancement of proline accumulation in the root tip.  相似文献

Observations on egg batch production by known female Stegastes partitus and the fates of those egg batches within the nests of known males revealed that spawning success was not a reliable predictor of hatching success and, hence, reproductive success because of high egg batch mortality. Moreover, while numbers of eggs per batch increased with increasing female length, both inter- and intra-individual variation in batch size was considerable, demonstrating that spawning events cannot be considered equivalent. These two findings indicate that spawning success cannot be assumed to provide a direct quantitative substitute for a measure of reproductive success in this benthic spawning reef fish.  相似文献

We studied photosynthetic and stomatal responses of grain sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench cv. Pioneer 8500), soybean ( Glycine max L. cv. Flyer) and eastern gamagrass ( Tripsacum dactyloides L.) during experimental sun and shade periods simulating summer cloud cover. Leaf gas exchange measurements of field plants showed that short-term (5 min) shading of leaves to 300–400 μmol m−2 s−1 photosynthetic photon flux density reduced photosynthesis, leaf temperature, stomatal conductance, transpiration and water use efficiency and increased intercellular CO2 partial pressure. In all species, photosynthetic recovery was delayed when leaves were reilluminated, apparently by stomatal closure. The strongest stomatal response was in soybean. Photosynthetic recovery was studied further with soybeans grown indoors (maximum photosynthetic photon flux density 1 200 μmol m−2 s−1). Plants grown indoors had responses to shade similar to those of field plants, except for brief nonstomatal limitation immediately after reillumination. These responses indicated the importance of the light environment during leaf development on assimilation responses to variable light, and suggested different limitations on carbon assimilation in different parts of the soybean canopy. Photosynthetic oxygen evolution recovered immediately upon reillumination, indicating that the light reactions did not limit soybean photosynthetic recovery. While shade periods caused stomatal closure and reduced carbon gain and water loss in all species, the consequences for carbon gain/water loss were greatest in soybean. The occurrence of stomatal closure in all three species may arise from their shared phenologies and herbaceous growth forms.  相似文献

Because photosynthetic rates in C4 plants are the same at normal levels of O2 (c, 20 kPa) and at c, 2 kPa O2 (a conventional test for evaluating photorespiration in C3 plants) it has been thought that C4 photosynthesis is O2 insensitive. However, we have found a dual effect of O2 on the net rate of CO2 assimilation among species representing all three C4 subtypes from both monocots and dicots. The optimum O2 partial pressure for C4 photosynthesis at 30 °C, atmospheric CO2 level, and half full sunlight (1000 μmol quanta m?2 s?1) was about 5–10 kPa. Photosynthesis was inhibited by O2 below or above the optimum partial pressure. Decreasing CO2 levels from ambient levels (32.6 Pa) to 9.3 Pa caused a substantial increase in the degree of inhibition of photosynthesis by supra-optimum levels of O2 and a large decrease in the ratio of quantum yield of CO2 fixation/quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII) measured by chlorophyll a fluorescence. Photosystem II activity, measured from chlorophyll a fluorescence analysis, was not inhibited at levels of O2 that were above the optimum for CO2 assimilation, which is consistent with a compensating, alternative electron How as net CO2 assimilation is inhibited. At suboptimum levels of O2, however, the inhibition of photosynthesis was paralleled by an inhibition of PSII quantum yield, increased state of reduction of quinone A, and decreased efficiency of open PSII centres. These results with different C4 types suggest that inhibition of net CO2 assimilation with increasing O2 partial pressure above the optimum is associated with photorespiration, and that inhibition below the optimum O2 may be caused by a reduced supply of ATP to the C4 cycle as a result of inhibition of its production photochemically.  相似文献

Next‐generation sequencing of complete genomes has given researchers unprecedented levels of information to study the multifaceted evolutionary changes that have shaped elite plant germplasm. In conjunction with population genetic analytical techniques and detailed online databases, we can more accurately capture the effects of domestication on entire biological pathways of agronomic importance. In this study, we explore the genetic diversity and signatures of selection in all predicted gene models of the storage starch synthesis pathway of Sorghum bicolor, utilizing a diversity panel containing lines categorized as either ‘Landraces’ or ‘Wild and Weedy’ genotypes. Amongst a total of 114 genes involved in starch synthesis, 71 had at least a single signal of purifying selection and 62 a signal of balancing selection and others a mix of both. This included key genes such as STARCH PHOSPHORYLASE 2 (SbPHO2, under balancing selection), PULLULANASE (SbPUL, under balancing selection) and ADP‐glucose pyrophosphorylases (SHRUNKEN2, SbSH2 under purifying selection). Effectively, many genes within the primary starch synthesis pathway had a clear reduction in nucleotide diversity between the Landraces and wild and weedy lines indicating that the ancestral effects of domestication are still clearly identifiable. There was evidence of the positional rate variation within the well‐characterized primary starch synthesis pathway of sorghum, particularly in the Landraces, whereby low evolutionary rates upstream and high rates downstream in the metabolic pathway were expected. This observation did not extend to the wild and weedy lines or the minor starch synthesis pathways.  相似文献

Unilateral pulse ultraviolet irradiation caused positively phototropic coiling (> 180°) and curvature (≤ 180°) in the growth zone of dark-grown broom sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor Moench, cv. Acme Broomcorn and Sekishokuzairai Fukuyama) first internodes. Coiling was induced by irradiation at 257 to 302 nm, and proceeded to develop almost linearly during 72 h or more involving new tissue produced after irradiation. Curvature, caused at 308 to 413 nm and by red light, developed rapidly during the first several hours then slowly to cease by about 24 h, and did not surpass 120° even at the optimum photon fluences. Action spectra were higher towards shorter wavelengths, having a shoulder at about 287 nm, and could not separate the two photoresponses. The curvature was partially but markedly suppressed by far-red following the ultraviolet irradiation, whereas the coiling was not affected. Possible involvement of a specific UV-B photoreceptor and phytochrome in curvature and of a UV-C photoreceptor in coiling is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. The ability of a plant to survive severe water deficits depends on its ability to restrict water loss through the leaf epidermis after stomata attain minimum aperture. At this stage, the rate of water loss is regulated by the epidermal conductance (gc). Low gc would be a useful selection criterion to identify genotypes with enhanced survival capability. Consequently, variation in gc among Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench genotypes was evaluated. Since there is little conclusive evidence linking g c with leaf waxiness, alternative hypotheses relating g c to stomatal trails were also examined. Epidermal conductance varied from 6.3 to 17.6mmol m−2 s−1 among sorghum genotypes. It was unrelated to stomatal pore length which varied with genotype and to pore depth which was similar for all genotypes measured. However, g c, increased with increasing stomatal density. This indicates that stomatal density plays a direct role in water loss even at very low conductances. The association of low stomatal density with low g c is consistent with the hypothesis that at the smallest stomata aperture, water loss from the epidermis above guard cell teichodes becomes a significant source of leaf water loss. Since low g c is directly related to crop survival under severe water deficits, it is recommended that genotypes with low g c. be selected using the selection criterion of stomatal density.  相似文献

Structure of inflorescence and its variation were organographically and ontogenetically studied inLespedeza cuneata (Dum.-Cours.) G. Don. An axillary inflorescence of the species forms a compound inflorescence which is composed of three or four component inflorescences. Each component inflorescence bears four (rarely six), three, two, or one flowers. Based on the arrangement of inflorescence phyllomes, the component inflorescence with four flowers is interpreted as a pseudoraceme bearing two shortened lateral shoots (partial inflorescences) each of which has two flowers. The component inflorescence with one flower appears to be terminated by the flower and to compose the cyme. Organographic observations revealed that the terminally located flower is not truly terminal, but axillary in origin. Ontogenetic observations showed that the apices of component inflorescence and partial inflorescence exist in early developmental stages in spite of variation in the form of component inflorescence. The terminally located flower in the cyme-like inflorescence was thus demonstrated to be laterally borne on the partial inflorescence axis. The component inflorescence composing the cyme-like one inL. cuneata is a reduced form in the number of partial inflorescences and of flowers from the pseudoraceme. The cyme-like inflorescence inL. cuneata resembles the inflorescence ofKummerowia.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The potential advantages of repeated breeding at a particular location should improve reproductive performance in long‐lived species of birds. However, for short‐lived species, natural selection should favor individuals that most quickly develop competency in reproduction. Therefore, we hypothesized that local breeding experience beyond the first breeding attempt at a particular location would have little effect on subsequent reproductive performance of Tree Swallows (Tachycineta bicolor), a species where about 50% of adults breed only once in their lives. We tested this hypothesis using data collected from Tree Swallows in Michigan from 1993 to 2002. Because we were specifically interested in examining the effects of local breeding experience on reproductive performance, we restricted our analyses to after‐second‐year (ASY) females and their mates that we first encountered as breeders. Consistent with our hypothesis, we found no relationship between repeated local breeding experience and the reproductive performance of ASY female Tree Swallows and their mates as measured by clutch size and number of fledged young. However, pairs with more combined total local experience tended to lay eggs earlier in the season. These results suggest that Tree Swallows may benefit from breeding site fidelity, not because repeated local experience improves reproductive performance as measured by the production of fledglings, but because returning individuals acquire nest cavities earlier and are able to begin breeding earlier, providing time to renest in case of early nest failure.  相似文献
