Summary The aim of this study was to examine the differences in physical activity and their contribution to differences in energy utilization in mice, selected either high or low for food intake, adjusted for body weight, which show correlated responses in lean content and metabolic rate. Simultaneous measurements of fasting metabolic rate and activity were made in lines of mice selected at either: a young age, 4-to 6-week food intake corrected for 4-week body weight; or an older age, 8- to 10-week food intake corrected for mean weight at 8 and 10 weeks of age. Correlated response in metabolic rate was found to have been accompanied by changes in locomotor activity near the ages at selection in both sets of lines. Activity, however, accounted for only a small proportion of variation in fasting heat production, generally less than 5%, although a highly positive correlation (r=0.63) between the two traits was found. It was concluded that selection for food intake adjusted for body weight has led to correlated response in physical activity. In consequence, mice selected in the upward direction expend some of the excess energy intake rather than assimilating it as body mass and are, therefore, slightly leaner than their counterparts selected in the downward direction.  相似文献

Exploiting the biolistic process we have generated stable transgenic bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) plants with unlinked and linked foreign genes. Co-transformation was conducted using plasmid constructions containing a fusion of the gus and neo genes, which were co-introduced with the methionine-rich 2S albumin gene isolated from the Brazil nut and the antisense sequence of AC1, AC2, AC3 and BC1 genes from the bean golden mosaic geminivirus. The results revealed a co-transformation frequency ranging from 40% to 50% when using unlinked genes and 100% for linked genes. The introduced foreign genes were inherited in a Mendelian fashion in most of the transgenic bean lines. PCR and Southern blot hybridization confirmed the integration of the foreign genes in the plant genome.  相似文献

Resistance to the parthenogenetic root-knot nematodeMeloidogyne incognita is controlled in tomato by the single dominant geneMi, against which virulent pathotypes are able to develop. Isofemale lines (i.e., families) were established from a natural avirulent isolate ofM. incognita in order to study the genetic variability and inheritance of the nematode virulence. From the progeny of individual females, the production of egg masses on the root system of theMi-resistant tomato Piersol was analyzed in artificial selection experiments. A family analysis revealed, after two successive generations, a strongly significant variation between the 63 isofemale lines tested, and the results obtained for the mothers and their daughters were also significantly correlated. These results together clearly demonstrate the existence of a genetic variability and inheritance for this character. In a second experiment, a four-generation selection was performed on 31 other isofemale lines. The results revealed a significant response to selection apparently limited only to the two families able to produce, in first generation, a significant minimal egg-mass number on the resistant cultivar.  相似文献

Inheritance of resistance to blackmold, a disease of ripe tomato fruit caused byAlternaria alternata, was studied in two interspecific crosses. The parents, F1 and F2 generations of a cross between the susceptibleLycopersicon esculentum Mill. cultivar Hunt 100 and the resistantL. Cheesmanii f.typicum Riley accession LA 422, and the parents, F1, F2, F3, and BC1 P2 generations of a cross between the susceptibleL. Esculentum cv. VF 145B-7879 and LA 422 were evaluated. The following disease evaluation traits were used: symptom rating (a symptom severity rating based on visual evaluation of lesions), diseased fruit (the number of diseased fruits divided by the total number of fruit scored), and lesion size (a function derived from the actual lesion diameter). Generation means analysis was used to determine gene action. The data of the Hunt 100 × LA 422 cross fit an additive-dominance model for all three traits. The VF 145B-7879 × LA 422 cross data best fit a model that included the additive × additive and additive × dominance interaction components for the trait diseased fruit, whereas higher-order epistatic models would have to be invoked to fit the data for the traits symptom rating and lesion size. A minimum of one gene segregated for all three traits. Broad-sense heritability estimates ranged from 0.09 to 0.16 for all three traits, indicating that selection for improved resistance to blackmold will require selection on a family performance basis.  相似文献

Inheritance of spontaneous male sterility in peas   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A plant with a mutant phenotype was observed in a Longittee cultivar. The plant was late in maturity, had white-translucent anthers, and was male sterile. The inheritance of this mutant was studied in a cross involving the mutant and the mother parent and their F1, F2, F3 and BC1F1 generations. The results suggested that the sterile character was genetic and due to a recessive gene.  相似文献

The Brazilian tropical adapted soybeans contains, in addition to superior morphological characters, genetic factors for tolerance to cultivation in acidic, mineral-stressed soils. However, the selection process for these hindrances has been empirical, and information on the genetics of mineral element uptake by the plant is necessary. The objective of this investigation was to identify the mode of inheritance for the absorption of phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, aluminium, manganese, zinc and copper in a 9 × 9 diallel cross. General combining ability (GCA) was higher than specific combining ability (SCA), with the exception of copper, manganese and zinc, indicating predominantly additive effects. The ratios of GCA/SCA varied between 3.4 (calcium) and 8.5 (magnesium). The regression of covariance (Wr) on variance (Vr) showed that the additive-dominance model explained the genetic differences in this germ plasm. However, the detection of overdominance could be related to possible heterozygosity in the parental varieties for mineral absorption. Broad-sense heritability values were higher than narrow sense heritability values for aluminium, iron, potassium, calcium and magnesium, being in the range of 67.9–86.9% and 42.0–56.6%, respectively. This is an indication that soybeans can be further improved to efficient utilisation of nutrients and to tolerate toxic factors in the soil.  相似文献

Resistant genotypes of the diploid tuber-bearing South American species Solarium arnezii x hondelmannii, S. berthaultii, S. leptophyes and S. microdontum were crossed with three diploid genotypes of S. tuberosum that varied in resistance and maturity type. The progenies were field tested for 2 years for resistance to a complex race of Phytophthora infestans. A wealth of genetic variation for resistance was found in most of the progenies. At least two susceptibility groups could be distinguished in some progenies of S. microdontum. This could be explained by the presence of several major resistance genes in the wild parent and, unexpectedly, in the susceptible parent SH 82-44-111. In most of the wild parents and in the susceptible parent SH 77-114-2988 there appeared to be minor resistance genes. General combining ability effects were predominant; small specific combining ability effects were detected in some crosses of S. microdontum. Gene action appeared dominant in some crosses.  相似文献

Summary Three isoenzyme systems (amylase, esterase and glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase) were examined in seeds of pea (Pisum sativum L.) and shown to give clear variation in their band patterns on gel electrophoresis between different lines. The inheritance of these isoenzyme systems, and the location of their genes on the pea genome was investigated. Reciprocal crosses were made between lines, F2 seeds were analysed for segregation in the band patterns of the isoenzymes, and F2 plants were investigated to find linkage between the genes for these isoenzymes and genes for selected morphological markers. The results obtained showed that each of the investigated isoenzyme systems is genetically controlled by co-dominant alleles at a single locus. The gene for amylase was found to be on chromosome 2, linked to the loci k and wb (wb ... 9 ... k ... 25 ... Amy). The gene for esterase was found to be linked with the gene Br (chromosome 4) but the exact location is uncertain because of the lack of the morphological markers involved in the cross. The gene for glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase was found to be on chromosome 1 and linked with the loci a and d (a... 24... Got... 41 ... d).  相似文献

Summary Three inbred lines, MSU 78-101, MSU 79-221 and MSU 74-230 were used to determine the inheritance of the umbrella branching habit in peppers. MSU 79-221, with the umbrella phenotype, was crossed with MSU 78-191 (dwarf) and MSU 74-230 (indeterminate growth habit). Segregating populations were separated on the basis of plant growth habit and fruit bearing habit. Genetic analyses suggested that the umbrella phenotype was controlled by three major recessive genes, ct and dt determining plant habit, and fa determining fruit bearing habit. When the dominant alleles Dt and Ct were in the dominant homozygous or heterozygous condition an indeterminate phenotype was produced. Su, a dominant suppressor gene, apparently acts to suppress the epistatic action of the Ct gene. Modifiers were involved in the control of branching in the umbrella plants. Linkage also was noted between the genes for indeterminate plant habit and non-clustered bearing habit. The information derived from this study will allow the plant breeder to design an efficient breeding program for the development of pepper cultivars suitable for mechanical harvesting systems.Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station Journal Article No. 11073  相似文献
