As the first part of a comprehensive study of the hormonal control of lateral root initiation and development, the effect of surgical treatments such as removal of the root tip, one or more cotyledons, the young epicotyl, or combination of these treatments, on the induction and emergence of lateral roots on the primary root of pea seedlings has been examined. Results show that removal of the root tip leads to a rapid but transitory increase in the number of lateral primordia, the largest number arising in the most apical segment of decapitated roots suggesting the accumulation of acropetally moving promoter substances in this region. The cotyledons appear to be the main source of promoter substances for both the induction and emergence of lateral roots, although one or more promoters also appear to be produced in the epicotyl. The data further indicate that the root tip is possibly the source of a substance which moves basipetally and interacts with acropetally moving promoters to regulate the zone for lateral primordia initiation; the root tip also appears to be the source of a powerful inhibitor of lateral root emergence. 相似文献

BackgroundThe baseline status of trace metals in adrenal tissue is unresolved, while the elemental profile for any adrenal pathology has not been examined so far. This study aimed to determine the baseline status of important toxic (Ni, As, Cd, Pb, Th, U) and essential trace elements (Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Se) in healthy adrenal tissues (HATs) as well as to examine whether there are alterations in the elemental composition of adenomatous adrenal tissues (AATs). Furthermore, this study aimed to find potential trace metals that could play a role in the pathogenesis of adrenal adenoma (AA).MethodsThe study included 45 patients diagnosed with AA. Impacts of relevant parameters such as gender, age, smoking habits and nodular sizes were considered. All samples were subjected to microwave digestion and the trace elements were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).ResultsThis is the first study that provided an insight into the elemental status of HATs. It was also shown that AATs had altered trace metal contents. Compared to HATs, the most significant findings were related to the high content of essential (Cu, Mn, Se, Zn) and Pb as a non-essential metal. Although gender, age and smoking habits had a modest effect on metal profiles, the most significant alterations were related to the nodular diameter above 4 cm, indicating that the growth of benign tumor could influence changes in elemental composition.ConclusionFor the first time the baseline contents of essential and toxic trace metals in HATs were determined. The results of this study may highlight the role of toxic and essential trace metals in AAs and could provide new insights into the molecular basis of pathophysiological changes caused by the hazardous effects of trace metals on adrenal structure and function. 相似文献

Set‐shifting and maintenance are complex cognitive processes, which are often impaired in schizophrenia. The genetic basis of these processes is poorly understood. We aimed to investigate the association between genetic variants of the metabotropic glutamate receptor 3 (GRM3) and cognitive set‐shifting in healthy individuals. The relationship between 14 selected single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the GRM3 gene and cognitive set‐shifting as measured by perseverative errors using the modified card sorting test (MCST) was analysed in a sample of N = 98 young healthy individuals (mean age in years: 22.7 ± 0.19). Results show that SNP rs17676277 is related to the performance on the MCST. Subjects with the TT genotype showed significantly less perseverative errors as compared with the AA (P = 0.025) and AT (P = 0.0005) and combined AA/AT genotypes (P = 0.0005). Haplotype analyses suggest the involvement of various SNPs of the GRM3 gene in perseverative error processing in a dominant model of inheritance. The findings strongly suggest that the genetic variation (rs17676277 and three haplotypes) in the metabotropic GRM3 is related to cognitive set‐shifting in healthy individuals independent of working memory. However, because of a relatively small sample size for a genetic association study, the present results are tentative and require replication. 相似文献

Abstract. Current opinion is divided on whether the free IAA in cereal shoots is derived from the coleoptile tip or from the grain. To date these hypotheses have been considered to be mutually exclusive. In this paper the idea is advanced that both sources may function in the supply of IAA in the shoot. Critical review of the literature shows that such an explanation best fits all the available evidence. It is argued that the relative importance of each source may vary between species of the Gramineae, with the supply of IAA in Avena shoots being derived predominantly from the grain, whereas in Zea the coleoptile tip is the more important source. 相似文献

以1年生西伯利亚白刺水培幼苗为材料,研究了不同浓度NaCl(0、200、400mmol·L~(-1))处理对幼苗生长及不同器官(根、茎、叶)中Na~+、K~+、Ca~(2+)、Mg~(2+)的吸收、运输与分配的影响,探讨西伯利亚白刺的盐适应机制。结果表明:(1)200mmol·L~(-1) NaCl处理促进了西伯利亚白刺幼苗的生长及叶片肉质化程度,400mmol·L-1 NaCl处理显著抑制其生长。(2)随着NaCl处理浓度的升高,西伯利亚白刺幼苗根、茎、叶中Na~+含量显著增加,且叶中Na~+含量显著高于茎和根中;根系中K~+含量显著增加;根、茎、叶中Ca~(2+)、Mg~(2+)含量在200mmol·L~(-1) NaCl处理下保持平稳或上升,而在400mmol·L-1 NaCl处理下显著下降。(3)各器官中K~+/Na~+、Ca~(2+)/Na~+和Mg~(2+)/Na~+比值总体随NaCl处理浓度的升高呈下降趋势,且根部离子比值始终高于叶片和茎。(4)随着NaCl处理浓度的升高,西伯利亚白刺幼苗根-茎SK,Na显著下降,而根-茎SCa,Na、SMg,Na及茎-叶SK,Na、SCa,Na、SMg,Na逐渐提高。研究发现,西伯利亚白刺的盐适应机制主要是通过植株的补偿生长效应及叶片对Na~+的聚积作用实现的,同时也与根系对K~+的扣留及茎叶对K~+、Ca~(2+)、Mg~(2+)选择性运输能力增强有关。 相似文献

- Crossings between the diploid wild Brassica rapa (AA , 2n = 20) and the tetraploid cultivar B. napus (AACC , 2n = 38) can readily be made. Backcrosses to the wild B. rapa (BC 1) produce aneuploids with variable chromosome numbers between 20 and 29. How does survival and performance relate to DNA content of plants?
- Growth of the BC 1 plants was measured in the lab. One plant in the F1 self‐pollinated spontaneously and produced abundant F2 seeds that were also examined. The number of C‐chromosomes was estimated from DNA values obtained with flow cytometry.
- Average DNA value of the BC 1 was similar to that of the parents, which shows that C‐chromosomes do not reduce success of pollen or embryos. The average DNA value in the F2 was 13% higher than in the F1, suggesting that extra C‐chromosomes facilitated gamete success and/or embryo survival. Under both optimal and drought stress conditions growth and survival of BC 1 hybrids was similar to that of B. rapa . No significant correlations existed between growth or survival and DNA value.
- Aneuploid plants were not inferior under the conditions of the growth room and may persist in nature. We discuss other factors, such as herbivory, that could prevent hybrid establishment in the field.

Lactate threshold (LT) is an index of exercise capacity and can be estimated from the gas exchange consequences of a metabolic
acidosis (LTGE). In recent years, it has emerged as a diagnostic tool in the evaluation of subjects with exercise limitation. The purpose
of this study was to develop LTGE prediction equations on a relatively large sample of adults and to cross-validate each equation. A total of 204 healthy,
sedentary, nonsmoking subjects (103 men and 101 women), aged 20–70 years, underwent graded exercise testing on a cycle ergometer.
The V-slope technique was used to detect LTGE as the oxygen uptake (V˙O2) at the breakpoint of the carbon dioxide output versus V˙O2 relationship. Multiple linear regression was used to develop 12 equations with combinations of the following predictor variables:
age, height, body mass, and fat-free mass. Eight of the equations are gender-specific and four are generalized with gender
as a dummy variable. The equations were cross-validated using the predicted residual sum of squares (PRESS) method. The results
demonstrate that the equations had relatively high multiple correlations (0.577–0.863) and low standard errors of the estimate
(0.123–0.228 1 · min−1). The PRESS method demonstrated that the equations are generalizable, i.e., can be used in future studies without a significant
loss of accuracy. Since we tested only healthy, sedentary subjects, our equations can be used to predict the lower limit of
normal for a given subject. Using individual data for healthy and diseased subjects from the literature, we found that our
gender-specific equations rarely miscategorized subjects unless they were obese and mass was a predictor variable. We conclude
that our equations provide accurate predictions of normal values for LTGE and that they are generalizable to other subject populations.

水稻(Oryza sativa L.)幼苗经盐、热激和冷三种不同胁迫预处理均提高了幼苗的抗寒性。与未预处理苗相比,在处理后、低温伤害后和常温下恢复2d的三个时期,不同胁迫预处理苗的可溶性和热不稳定蛋白含量变化趋势甚为相似,但热稳定蛋白含量变化则各有异同。SDS-PAGE图谱分析显示,不同胁迫预处理提高水稻幼苗抗寒性时,其可溶性蛋白、热稳定和热不稳定蛋白组成变化亦各有异同。除诱导出共有的新多肽外,还各自诱导出特有的新多肽。结果表明,植物对不同胁迫的交叉适应存在一定的共同机理,但亦可看出植物对同一种环境胁迫似乎不是以同一的机理去适应。 相似文献

Exposure of workers to benzene and polyaromatic hydrocarbons has been documented to be at relatively high levels in the production of benzene and in the coking process at a petrochemical plant in the oil shale area in Estonia. Altogether 97 plasma samples from workers and 40 from unexposed matched referents from two samplings in different seasons were analyzed for the presence of ras (P21) proteins; of the workers 50 were exposed to benzene in the benzene production plant and 47 to polyaromatic hydrocarbons and benzene in a cokery. Proteins were separated by gel electrophoresis, transferred to a nitrocellulose membrane by Western blotting and detected by chemiluminescence, using a monoclonal antibody as the primary antibody. There were no statistically significant differences between the exposed and the referent groups. The results are thus in keeping with the lack of exposure related cytogenetic effects for this same workforce. 相似文献

Previous studies have indicated that ent-kaurene synthase (KS) is located in the proplastid stroma of rapidly dividing plant tissues. Here we present further and
more direct evidence for this hypothesis and follow the activity of KS throughout the entire vegetative growth period of wheat
plants. During germination of wheat caryopses, KS activity was maximal for a short period culminating on the third day in
the scutellum and on the forth day in the meristematic shoot base. Throughout further development of the wheat plant, KS was
found in the nodes but not in internodes or leaves. The activity of KS in each node increased when the internode above it
was elongating and decreased again when this internode had almost reached its final size. The correlation of KS activity with
growth was particularly striking in the case of tiller development from the forth node: here KS activity had already declined,
but was restored when the tiller began elongating. Electron micrographs of wheat seedling tissue with high KS activity (shoot
base) showed the presence of proplastids, whereas electron micrographs of tissue without such activity (primary leaves) showed
only developing or mature chloroplasts. On density-gradient centrifugation, the plastids that yielded stroma preparations
with KS activity became distributed over a greater density range and also had a lower NADP+-glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase:shikimate oxidoreductase ratio than plastids yielding KS-inactive stroma preparations.
Pea shoot apices contain both proplastids and mature chloroplasts. Here also, KS activity was associated with the stroma of
plastids with characteristics similar to those of the wheat proplastids, indicating that KS is associated with proplastids
in pea shoot apices as well. We conclude that the stromal location of KS may be a general feature of proplastids in rapidly
dividing tissue.
