A study was carried out at the University of Arid Agriculture, Rawalpindi, Pakistan to integrate different control measures against Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) on chickpea, to minimize the use of hazardous insecticides and develop an eco-friendly management program. Cultural (weeding), mechanical (hand picking), biological (release of Trichogramma chilonis ), microbial (spraying of Bacillus thruingiensis ) and chemical (Steward) control practices were applied three times at 10 day intervals individually and also in various combinations. The application of Steward proved most effective when applied alone, with 0.41 larvae/plant, pod infestation of 9.31% and the highest grain yield (1203.66 g/plot); however, the integration of weeding, hand picking and Steward proved to be the most effective in reducing the larval population (0.12 larvae/plant) with minimum pod infestation (5.45%) on variety CM-2000, which resulted in the maximum grain yield (1260.33 g/plot). The cost–benefit ratio in the treatment where Steward was applied alone was 1:2.20, and it was 1:3.53 where weeding and hand picking practices were integrated.  相似文献

Increasing the belowground translocation of assimilated carbon by plants grown under elevated CO2 can cause a shift in the structure and activity of the microbial community responsible for the turnover of organic matter in soil. We investigated the long‐term effect of elevated CO2 in the atmosphere on microbial biomass and specific growth rates in root‐free and rhizosphere soil. The experiments were conducted under two free air carbon dioxide enrichment (FACE) systems: in Hohenheim and Braunschweig, as well as in the intensively managed forest mesocosm of the Biosphere 2 Laboratory (B2L) in Oracle, AZ. Specific microbial growth rates (μ) were determined using the substrate‐induced respiration response after glucose and/or yeast extract addition to the soil. For B2L and both FACE systems, up to 58% higher μ were observed under elevated vs. ambient CO2, depending on site, plant species and N fertilization. The μ‐values increased linearly with atmospheric CO2 concentration at all three sites. The effect of elevated CO2 on rhizosphere microorganisms was plant dependent and increased for: Brassica napus=Triticum aestivum<Beta vulgaris<Populus deltoides. N deficiency affected microbial growth rates directly (N limitation) and indirectly (changing the quantity of fine roots). So, 50% decrease in N fertilization caused the overall increase or decrease of microbial growth rates depending on plant species. The μ‐value increase was lower for microorganisms growing on yeast extract then for those growing on glucose, i.e. the effect of elevated CO2 was smoothed on rich vs. simple substrate. So, the r/K strategies ratio can be better revealed by studying growth on simple (glucose) than on rich substrate mixtures (yeast extract). Our results clearly showed that the functional characteristics of the soil microbial community (i.e. specific growth rates) rather than total microbial biomass amount are sensitive to increased atmospheric CO2. We conclude that the more abundant available organics released by roots at elevated CO2 altered the ecological strategy of the soil microbial community specifically a shift to a higher contribution of fast‐growing r‐selected species was observed. These changes in functional structure of the soil microbial community may counterbalance higher C input into the soil under elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration.  相似文献

针对中国土地荒漠化的现状和关键问题,以科尔沁沙地为例,阐述了荒漠化的发展历程、主要动因与未来趋势。科尔沁沙地正处在现代土地荒漠化过程之中,导致快速发展的荒漠化动因主要是源于人们不合理的土地利用方式,即滥垦、滥牧和滥伐(简称“三滥”);而在各种利农政策下,滥垦可能会重新滋生和蔓延,是非常值得借鉴的历史教训。本文应用复合生态系统的观点剖析了“三滥”与荒漠化的关系,并据此提出从源头减轻土地压力的6项对策。  相似文献

Several lines of evidence suggest that the X chromosome of various animal species has an unusual complement of genes with sex-biased or sex-specific expression. However, the study of the X chromosome gene content in different organisms provided conflicting results. The most striking contrast concerns the male-biased genes, which were reported to be almost depleted from the X chromosome in Drosophila but overrepresented on the X chromosome in mammals. To elucidate the reason for these discrepancies, we analysed the gene content of the Z chromosome in chicken. Our analysis of the publicly available expressed sequence tags (EST) data and genome draft sequence revealed a significant underrepresentation of ovary-specific genes on the chicken Z chromosome. For the brain-expressed genes, we found a significant enrichment of male-biased genes but an indication of underrepresentation of female-biased genes on the Z chromosome. This is the first report on the nonrandom gene content in a homogametic sex chromosome of a species with heterogametic female individuals. Further comparison of gene contents of the independently evolved X and Z sex chromosomes may offer new insight into the evolutionary processes leading to the nonrandom genomic distribution of sex-biased and sex-specific genes. We use a generic model of a network of proteins that can activate or deactivate each other to explore the emergence and evolution of signal transduction networks and to gain a basic understanding of their general properties. Starting with a set of non-interacting proteins, we evolve a signal transduction network by random mutation and selection to fulfill a complex biological task. In order to validate this approach we base selection on a fitness function that captures the essential features of chemotactic behavior as seen in bacteria. We find that a system of as few as three proteins can evolve into a network mediating chemotaxis-like behavior by acting as a "derivative sensor". Furthermore, we find that the dynamics and topology of such networks show many similarities to the natural chemotaxis pathway, that the response magnitude can increase with increasing network size and that network behavior shows robustness towards variations in some of the internal parameters. We conclude that simulating the evolution of signal transduction networks to mediate a certain behavior may be a promising approach for understanding the general properties of the natural pathway for that behavior.  相似文献

The interaction between mobile DNA sequences and their hosts raises important questions in the context of hosts which reproduce clonally with only rare horizontal transmission between clones. The activity of some mobile DNAs as reversible mutators of genes raises the possibility that, in a fluctuating environment, cells may gain an advantage if they have mobile DNAs which mutate genes whose inactivation is favoured in one of the environments that the population encounters. Here we analyse a model of this process and ask what would be the optimal rate of transposition in a population whose elements are maintained by this mechanism. We also examine the impact of horizontal transfer on such a population. With movement of elements between cells, we can imagine elements with differing rates of transposition and host cells with differing rates of transposition. We find that evolution in the population of elements favours a rapid rate of transposition, and evolution of the host cells favours cells in which this rapid rate of element-dependent transposition results in an optimal rate of transposition per cell. However, when horizontal transfer rates are high, some unexpected features of the model are observed. In particular, a polymorphism between cell types (some with an optimal rate of transposition and some with no transposition at all from endogenous elements) can be stably maintained. We consider the possible biological predictions of this analysis.  相似文献

Classic theory on the evolution of anisogamy focuses on the trade-off between gamete productivity and provisioning and mechanisms associated with post-zygotic survival. In this article, the role of mortality acting on both zygotes and gametes is explored as a factor influencing the evolution of different sized gametes. In particular, variable mortality through differential survival or metabolic damage is shown to affect the persistence of isogamy, the evolution of more than two sexes and the evolution of anisogamy. Evolutionary stable isogamous states are shown to be locally unstable and disruptive selection can induce the evolution of anisogamy. Analysis of both the isogamous and anisogamous ESS points reveals that the persistence of either of these conditions is not always assured. The implications of variable survival on the evolution of anisogamy are discussed.  相似文献

There are several ways to quantify jumping performance, a common definition being the height gained by the body's centre of mass (CM) in the airborne phase. Under this definition, jump height is determined by take-off velocity. According to the existing literature on jumping and scaling, take-off velocity, and hence jumping performance is independent of size because the energy that differently sized geometrically scaled jumpers can generate with their muscles is proportional to their mass. In this article it is shown, based on a simple energy balance, that it is incorrect to presume that jump height does not depend on size. Contrary to common belief, size as such has does have an effect on take-off velocity, putting small jumpers at a mechanical advantage, as is shown analytically. To quantify the effect of size on take-off velocity, a generic jumper model was scaled geometrically and evaluated numerically. While a 70-kg jumper took off at 2.65 m/s and raised its CM by 0.36 m after take-off, a perfectly geometrically similar jumper of 0.7 g reached a take-off velocity of 3.46 m/s and raised its CM by 0.61 m. The reason for the better performance of small jumpers is their higher efficacy in transforming the energy generated by the actuators into energy due to vertical velocity of the CM. Considering the ecological and evolutionary relevance of different definitions of jump height, size-dependent efficacy might explain why habitual jumping is especially prominent among small animals such as insects.  相似文献
