In the mass rearing of fruit flies, the adult emergence time is gradual, due to factors such as variation in food consumption in the larval phase, the female oviposition behavior and environmental conditions, among others. Here, we investigate the effect of emergence time on sex ratio, fecundity, fertility, body size and mating performance in mass-reared Anastrepha ludens (Diptera: Tephritidae) flies. The results of the study indicated that the emergence of the flies is gradual and lasts approximately 96?h, but the highest proportion of emerged flies was observed at 48?h. The flies emerging at 24 and 48?h showed higher fecundity than those emerging at 72 and 96?h, but there were no significant differences in the sex ratio, fertility and male mating performance. Body size was significant, the flies that emerged at 24, 48 and 72?h were bigger than those emerged at 96?h. Species translocation leads to disease emergence in native species of considerable economic importance. Generalist parasites are more likely to be transported, become established and infect new hosts, thus their risk needs to be evaluated. Freshwater systems are particularly at risk from parasite introductions due to the frequency of fish movements, lack of international legislative controls for non-listed pathogens and inherent difficulties with monitoring disease introductions in wild fish populations. Here we used one of the world’s most invasive freshwater fish, the topmouth gudgeon, Pseudorasbora parva, to demonstrate the risk posed by an emergent generalist parasite, Sphaerothecum destruens. Pseudorasbora parva has spread to 32 countries from its native range in China through the aquaculture trade and has introduced S. destruens to at least five of these. We systematically investigated the spread of S. destruens through Great Britain and its establishment in native fish communities through a combination of phylogenetic studies of the host and parasite and a novel environmental DNA detection assay. Molecular approaches confirmed that S. destruens is present in 50% of the P. parva communities tested and was also detected in resident native fish communities but in the absence of notable histopathological changes. We identified specific P. parva haplotypes associated with S. destruens and evaluated the risk of disease emergence from this cryptic fish parasite. We provide a framework that can be applied to any aquatic pathogen to enhance detection and help mitigate future disease risks in wild fish populations. 相似文献

The times and emergence of permanent teeth were ascertained by examining 1,263 Khasi children (615 males and 648 females), aged 5 to 15 years. Gingival emergence of the first 28 permanent teeth was recorded and the data were subjected to probit analysis to compute the mean (and standard deviation) emergence time of each individual tooth. Tooth emergence in females was markedly earlier than in males, and canines were most advanced in this respect. Females acquired all their teeth in shorter time span (5.5 years) than males (6.5 years). There were no decisive sex differences in the sequence of tooth emergence. The differences in emergence times between antimeres were statistically nonsignificant. The length of hiatus between two active emergence dental stages was shorter for the maxilla than for the mandible. It occurred between lateral incisor and first premolar in the maxilla of both the sexes, while in case of the mandible, it was spaced between lateral incisor and canine. The Khasis showed early emergence when compared to other populations. The findings support the earlier reports that the controls of deciduous-tooth emergence continue to play some part in emergence of the permanent dentition, especially the first permanent teeth that emerge. 相似文献

Acacia karroo Hayne is the most important woody invader of grassland in South Africa, and can greatly reduce the productivity of grassland. A field experiment was conducted to test the hypotheses that emergence, growth and the 1st year's survival of Acacia karroo would be enhanced by (1) defoliation of the grass sward, (2) increased irradiance, (3) increased moisture availability and (4) its germination within cattle dung pats. The study was conducted on one site above and one below the natural altitudinal treeline of this species in grassland of the eastern Cape, South Africa. Not one seedling emerged from dung pats. Neither location nor the other treatments affected the density of emerging seedlings, although only 40.4 seedlings m–2 emerged of the 200 seeds m–2 planted. Shading dramatically increased the density of surviving seedlings. In the open, only 3 and 1.5 seedlings m–2 remained respectively at the end of the growing season or the beginning of the next, compared to 23.3 and 19.5 seedlings m–2 under shading for these respective times. This was attributed to the effect of shade on moisture availability in a season which received only 54% of average rainfall. Seedling survival until the end of the growing season was enhanced (30%) by shade at both sites, but also by supplemental water (24%) and defoliation of the sward (7%) at the site above the treeline. Across sites and treatments, seedling survival was related to moisture availability, with no or poor survival for < 500 mm rainfall, indicating this species can only establish in certain rainfall years. Seedling survival over winter was not influenced by treatment, but was greater for larger seedlings. Treatments affected seedling size, in particular seedlings growing under shade and within a dense grass canopy were etiolated. A. karroo seedlings are capable of establishing and surviving within a dense grass sward for at least a year, tolerant of low irradiance and of interference, which, because most seeds do not persist for much longer than a year, suggests this species forms predominantly a seedling bank. Virus‐host coevolution has selected for generalized host defense against viruses, exemplified by interferon production/signaling and other innate immune function in eukaryotes such as humans. Although cell‐surface binding primarily limits virus infection success, generalized adaptation to counteract innate immunity across disparate hosts may contribute to RNA virus emergence potential. We examined this idea using vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) populations previously evolved on strictly immune‐deficient (HeLa) cells, strictly immune competent (MDCK) cells, or on alternating deficient/competent cells. By measuring viral fitness in unselected human cancer cells of differing innate immunity, we confirmed that HeLa‐adapted populations were specialized for innate immune‐deficient hosts, whereas MDCK‐adapted populations were relatively more generalized for fitness on hosts of differing innate immune capacity and of different species origin. We also confirmed that HeLa‐evolved populations maintained fitness in immune‐deficient nonhuman primate cells. These results suggest that innate immunity is more prominent than host species in determining viral fitness at the host‐cell level. Finally, our prediction was inexact that selection on alternating deficient/competent hosts should produce innate viral generalists. Rather, fitness differences among alternating host‐evolved VSV populations indicated variable capacities to evade innate immunity. Our results suggest that the evolutionary history of innate immune selection can affect whether RNA viruses evolve greater host‐breadth. 相似文献

Biological soil crusts are a universal and common feature in arid and semi-arid regions and their appearance profoundly affects
soil surface properties which may greatly change the seed dispersal, germination and establishment. To date, only a handful
of experiments have exerted to investigate the effects of crusts on vascular plants and the conclusions from these studies
are variable. In this study, we investigate the influences of two different crusts universally spreading in southeastern part
of the Tengger Desert with four chronosequences (24, 41, 50 years old in artificial vegetation area and natural vegetation
crusts) on vascular plants. Crusts were placed at three different sites to simulate different environmental factors (wind
velocity and soil crust moisture), we set two soil moisture regimes for crusts to investigate how vascular plants respond
under different moisture regimes in crusts. Emergence densities of vascular plants were significantly higher in moss crust
than in algae crust. With the development of crusts, seed emergence increased in moss crust while decreased in algae crust.
As for effects of moisture, our results showed that soil moisture had a significant effect on seed emergence in both types
of crusts at all developing phases. Crusts with higher moisture had more seedlings than those with lower moisture. The above
results indicated that the appearance of crusts changed the surface soil properties, which had greatly influenced the entrapment
and lodgement of seeds in the study area, thus subsequently influence seed emergence through affecting natural factors. 相似文献

There is much debate on the definitions of homoplasy and homology, and on how to spot them among character states used in a phylogenetic analysis. Many advocate what I call a "processual approach," in which information on genetics, development, function, or other criteria help a priori in identifying two character states as homologous or homoplastic. I argue that the processes represented by these criteria are insufficiently known for most organisms and most characters to be reliably used to identify homoplasies and homologies. Instead, while not foolproof, phylogeny should be the ultimate test for homology. Character states are assumed to be homologous a priori because this is falsifiable and because their initial inclusion in the character-state analysis is based on the assumption that they may be phylogenetically informative. If they fall out as symplesiomorphies or synapomorphies in a phylogenetic analysis, their status as homologies remains unfalsified. If they fall out as homoplasies, having evolved independently in more than one clade, their status as homologous is falsified, and a homoplasy is identified. The character-state transformation series, functional morphology, finer levels of morphological comparison, and the distribution and correlation of characters all help to explain the presence of homoplasies in a given phylogeny. Explaining these homoplasies, and not ignoring them as "noise," should be as much a goal of phylogenetic analysis as the production of a phylogeny. Examples from the fossil record of Miocene hominoids are given to illustrate the advantages of a process-informs-pattern-recognition-after-the-fact approach to understanding the evolution of character states. 相似文献
