An experiment to study the effects of Mg nutrition on root and shoot development of the Al-sensitive sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) genotype CV323 grown in pots of sandy loam under different acid soil stress is reported. This experiment had
a factorial design: four rates of liming were combined with four rates of Mg fertilization. When no Mg was added, the pH of
the soil solutions (collected in ceramic cups) increased from 4.0 (unlimed) to 4.2, 4.7 and 5.9 at the increasing rates of
liming. After 30 days of growth dry matter yields of the limed treatments were 40%, 115% and 199% higher than that of the
unlimed treatment. Without liming and at the highest liming rate, adding Mg did not affect plant biomass significantly. At
the two intermediate levels of liming, however, 11.3 mg extra Mg per kg soil increased dry matter yield to the same levels
as found at the highest liming rate. Concentrations of Mg in the soil solution rose after Mg was added and fell when lime
was added, but adding both Mg and lime increased Mg concentrations in the plant shoots. In plants of the limed treatments,
dry matter yield was correlated closely with the Mg concentration in the shoot. This was not so in the unlimed treatment.
Furthermore, in the unlimed treatments root development was inhibited, but reduced Mg uptake by the plants resulted mainly
from the direct effect of Al- (or H-) ions in the soil solution rather than from impaired root development. It is concluded
that Mg fertilization counteracted the interfering effects of Al- and H ions on Mg uptake. 相似文献

The social environment affects both behavioral and physiological responses to separation from the mother. Less information
is available on the impact of the social environment on the response to separation in peer-reared infant monkeys. This study
reports the responses of peer-reared pigtail macaque infants to repeated separations, and the impact of social versus isolation
housing during the separation. The responses of two pairs of monkeys were studied during four three-day separations. One of
each pair was housed in isolation during the separation, and the other was with another pair of peers, with whom they had
been living for one month prior to the separation. The isolation-housed peer responded to the separation with behavioral agitation,
but no depression. The socially-housed peer's behavior did not differ from baseline during the separation. During successive
reunions, all the separated monkeys, regardless of housing condition, exhibited declining levels of behaviors related to maintaining
proximity to their attachment figure. Although the number of subjects is small, the results suggest that the presence of social
support, in the form of a familiar peer, can ameliorate the response to separation, and that with repeated separations the

Summary Parameters estimated from a Gardner-Eberhart analysis of the F2 generation of a six-parent diallel in oats (Avena sativa L.) were used to compare methods for predicting the performance of F3 row plots. The prediction methods were: (1) individual F2 plant performance (F2I), (2) parent average plus F2 plot deviations (PF2), (3) parent average plus weighted F2 plot deviations (PF2P), (4) best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) of parent average plus F2 plot deviations (BPF2), and (5) BLUP plus weighted F2 deviations (BF2). The F2 single-plant traits used for prediction were biological yield to predict F3 biological yield, whole plant and primary tiller grain yield for prediction of F3 grain yield, and whole plant and primary tiller harvest index (HI) to predict F3 HI. Prediction methods were evaluated by correlations between predicted and observed F3 performance. Prediction methods and traits for which correlations were greater than for F2I included: BF2 for biological yield, PF2, PF2P and BF2 for whole plant grain yield, PF2, BPF2, and BF2 for primary tiller grain yield. None had a correlation significantly greater than F2I for either measure of HI, where heritability was large. PF2 is the recommended method for traits with low heritability because of its simplicity and because it had the largest or nearly the largest correlation for each of the yield traits. 在实验室条件下,研究了酸性水和投加铝、钙对鲢鱼胚胎孵化和鱼苗存活以及幼鱼鳃超微结构的影响。pH4.0引起所有胚胎在24小时内死亡,暴露于pH4.5—6.0的胚胎孵化率和暴露于pH4.0—6.0的5—15日龄鱼苗存活率随pH值上升而增高。投加0.5mg Al~(3+)/L使在酸性pH暴露条件下的胚胎孵化率和鱼苗存活率进一步降低。投加3.0mg Ca~(2+)/L可显著提高暴露于pH4.5和5.0的胚胎孵化率;投加2.0mg Ca~(2+)/L可在一定程度上提高暴露于pH4.5和5.0的鱼苗存活率。幼苗经pH4.5暴露8小时后出现严重的鳃超微结构损害;投加1.0mg Al~(3+)/L使鳃结构损害加剧;投加5.0mg Ca~(2+)/L可明显缓解酸性水对鳃的损害。 相似文献

Consumption of leaf detritus by a stream shredder: Influence of tree species and nutrient status 总被引:8,自引:3,他引:5
Four species of riparian vegetation (alder, birch, willow and poplar) were fertilized with nitrogen, phosphorus, nitrogen
+ phosphorus, or no fertilizer (control). The resulting leaf detritus (leached but not microbially colonized) was offered
to a stream shredder, Hydatophylax variabilis (Trichoptera: Limnephilidae). In one experiment, shredder consumption of leaf detritus from different nutrient treatments
(within tree species) was compared, and in a second experiment, consumption of different tree species (within nutrient treatments)
was compared. Larvae preferred leaf detritus from nitrogen + phosphorus treatments (except in poplar where nitrogen treatment
was preferred). Alder was preferred over other tree species for all treatments. Chemical and physical analyses of leaf litter
showed differences between tree species and nutrient treatments in nutrient content, tannins and leaf toughness. Leaf consumption
by larvae was positively associated with nitrogen content and negatively associated with condensed tannin content. Species
composition and nutrient status of riparian vegetation may strongly influence detrital food webs in streams. 相似文献

Summary A re-examination of earlier NPK fertilization experiments in Douglas fir stands on sandy soils shows the effects of high nitrogen
input by air pollution during the last 10–15 years on plant nutrition at these sites. In 1960, experimental plots showed a
positive growth reaction to nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilization. All suffered from severe phosphorus deficiency
in 1984, low phosphorus in the needles was invariably accompanied by a high nitrogen content, with all N/P ratios between
20 and 30. The same conclusion emerges from an independent investigation of nutrient status of a selection of Douglas fir
stands. Hence, if stand productivity and a balanced nutrient status of the trees is to be maintained, the increase in atmospheric
input of nitrogen calls for supplementary fertilization. Given the current N/P ratios in the needles, a positive growth response

Immunoblotting analysis was used to identify the microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs) present in cultures of mouse brain neurons. Polyclonal antibodies were raised against the two main adult brain MAPs, i.e., MAP2 (300 kDa) and tau (60-70 kDa). Whatever the stage of the culture, which was performed in a defined medium (3 or 6 days), the anti-MAP2 serum detected several high-molecular-weight components (including MAP2) and an entity with 62-65 kDa. Anti-tau revealed essentially a major peak of 48 kDa (young tau) but also slightly cross-reacted with the 62-65 kDa entity. During the culture period (0-6 days) the cells developed progressively a dense neuritic network; the concentration of the different MAPs increased in parallel but at different rates depending on the different species. The increase in concentration of the high-molecular-weight components occurred before that of 48-kDa tau. This suggests that high-molecular-weight MAPs and 48-kDa tau might be involved respectively in the initiation and elongation of neurites. In contrast, and since the main developmental changes in tau composition seen in vivo did not occur during the time course of the culture, this transition might be related to later events of neuronal differentiation. 相似文献

Early iron deficiency in rat does not affect the weight or the protein, DNA, and RNA content but results in a slight reduction in gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) (13%, p less than 0.01) and glutamic acid (20%, p less than 0.001) content of the brain. The activities of the two GABA shunt enzymes, glutamate dehydrogenase and GABA-transaminase, and of the NAD+-linked isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDH) were inhibited whereas the glutamic acid decarboxylase, mitochondrial NADP+-linked ICDH, and succinic dehydrogenase activities remained unaltered in brain. On rehabilitation with the iron-supplemented diet for 1 week, these decreased enzyme activities in brain attained the corresponding control values. However, the hepatic nonheme iron content increased to about 80% of the control, after rehabilitation for 2 weeks. A prolonged iron deficiency resulting in decreased levels of glutamate and GABA may lead to endocrinological, neurological, and behavioral alterations. 相似文献
